Matt Jarvis’ vow after England call-up
Monday 21st March 2011, 11:13AM GMT.
Wolves winger Matt Jarvis today insisted his England call-up would only improve him further as a player.
The 24-year-old’s selection in Fabio Capello’s 26-man party for Saturday’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales and the Wembley friendly against Ghana three days later makes him the first Wolves player since Steve Bull in October 1990 to earn a place in the national squad.
And Jarvis, who would be the first Wolves winger since Alan Hinton in 1962-63 to play for England, is eager to sample the feeling of training alongside the country’s best players.
He said: “I’m sure it will be a great experience to be training with the squad and with a coach like Fabio Capello.
“Training will be that little bit different and I’m sure it will be a big benefit to me to be there alongside such top players.”
Jarvis also paid tribute to Wolves’ management staff and his team-mates.
He said: “It’s been great for me to have worked with the gaffer Mick McCarthy and assistant boss Terry Connor who have helped me improve my game since I arrived at the club.
“I owe a lot to them as well, as my team-mates who have also been very important. But I always feel I can improve my game and am happy to put the work in to make that happen.”
Team-mate Jamie O’Hara believes Jarvis’ goals – he’s scored two in three and five this season – have helped him be selected.
O’Hara said: “If you look at Ashley Young, Jarvis is that type of player. There’s no reason why he can’t get in that team.
“Once you start adding goals to your game, you start getting noticed as a footballer.”
Jarvis was in the provisional party for the qualifiers against Switzerland and Bulgaria in the autumn without making the cut.
The Wolves man is joined by Villa quartet Ashley Young, Stewart Downing, Darren Bent and Kyle Walker plus Birmingham goalkeeper Ben Foster.
Wolves striker Sam Vokes has also been called into Wales’ squad after an injury to Robert Earnshaw.

Excellent JARVO you deserve it lad….just continue to do what you are doing….and what you say you are going to do….As the likes of Rooney,A.Cole,Terry and a few others are only worth being involved with on the field,of it lad be yourself and dong, please dont get swayed by the bright lights,,as eventually you will get blinded…

A much deserved call up, the lad as come a long way, since being at gillingham. I just hope and pray he doesn’t come back with an ‘attitude’ that some players seem to get once they mix with other top players, and get to hear stories of how much they earn? But once again well done Matty, i hope you get a chance to even play whether its only 15-25mins. Its good to see that you ‘dont have to play for a top 6 club to get into the england squad’ must give other players encouragement from teams at the bottom end, that if your good enough you will get your chance. Brilliant Matty, hope you get your chance, your twice the player and twice the man of that diving whinger Ashley Young…

CONGRATULATIONS MATT! Wonderful news and so well deserved. I’m thrilled to bits for you and for Wolves. Hope you get on the pitch and show ‘em how it’s done. XX.

Well done Matt Jarvis, our best player this season. Hope you play for England, just remember…..DON”T GET INJURED !!!!!!

Congratulations to Matt Jarvis you deserve this for your performances this season.Hope you get to play, once again The best of luck.

Well done Matt but am I the only person that thinks Hamill is playing better of our 2 wingers at the moment?

Although the spotlight is on Matt Jarvis (and rightly so) there have been some notable improvements by other players. Richard Stearman in particular has come on leaps and bounds since the beginning of the year and may not be far off a call up. Had it not been for injury, we might also have seen Kightly in an England shirt.
Our young and hungry squad of players are maturing nicely.

Fair play to the kid, from what ive heard he’s had a good season for you lot and deserves to be selected if he’s been consistant. Just hope he has a shocker against the baggies in a few weeks lol.
Congrats Jarvo

Well done Mattie, it’s good to see hard work rewarded, and you have certainly worked hard at Wolves!
It is also a reflection on the management of the club, and how they are nurturing and improving the players, particularly the young ones.
Hope you get on for one of the games and score a goal, that will cement your international future.

When he joined us from Gillingham and gave his first ever interview on Wolves World (now Player) I thought what a well mannered polite level headed young man. Four years down the road he has become one of the premiership’s top wingers. His England place is well merited and well deserved. He should be on the starting line up for his consistent performances put him up as the best! Congratulations and well done Mat, and well done the Wolves for helping to make him the great player he now is. Go lad, go!

Well done Jarvo, Can’t wait to see you in an England shirt. Its been too long since Bully it felt great then and it will be great now. Enjoy it you are the best.

The lads done well and improved year on year under MM. Well deserved, however a word of caution, he’s only in the squad and hasn’t actually played yet…!!!
I suspect Young, Lennon and Downing will get the nod ahead of him, maybe more realistic is him playing next Tuesday in a less important game than Saturday.
The article states above he would be the first Wolves winger since Alan Hinton selected for England, which raises the question why Waggy never played….a victim of Ramsay’s wingless wonders I am afraid.
…..and more recently what if Kites had not picked up those horrendous injuries these last 18 months or so? However you never know all is not lost there yet…

From a Gills fan
Well done Matty, a quality player, who always had time for the fans, gives 100% and always plays with a smile!
Would love to see you pull on the shirt against Crofty but would happily accept a run out against Ghana.
UP THE GILLS
p.s. hope we get some cash for this ;) we need it!

Jarvis has been fantastic since the day he joined Wolves and this season has almost certainly been our best player. Sure he’ll put the other England ‘stars’ to shame.
Well done Matt!

1Some people on here have criticised Terry Connor.Interesting to read that Matt gives Terry some praise in helping in his development.Jo Lescott also went out of his way recently to praise Terry for his help in the players development when he was a kid at the Wolves.Just because some one uses a clipboard, doesn’t mean he is a bad coach.
2 Memo to Mick McCarthy, keep Jarvis on the left even if it means leaving Hunt on the bench. It is no coincidence that Matt’s best form has returned when Hunt was injured and Jarvis has been played in his best position on the left.

Congrats to Jarvo.
A delight to watch on the wing and super-talented. Also a cracking lad.
Well Done – just hope he gets on the pitch.
Good Luck.
#29 Whilst i agree with Jarvo on left
One of the best parts of Jarvo’s game is that he can wander from left to right and bemuse opposition

Maybe Matt can do what Bully did against the Jocks. Come on as a sub and score.
Big difference between the Villa & Wolves on Saturday was team spirit. This might not have been picked up by TV cameras, but, for us at the ground, the linesman pulled a hamstring and had to go off during the second half. During the short break in play all the Wolves players ran together to the dug out for water and a team cuddle. The Villa players stayed isolated around the pitch with hands on hips.
Well done Mick and Terry. That team spirit might be the difference that keeps us up.

You are indeed right. That Waggy never won a full cap was incredible, especially as he had played brilliantly for the England B side.
Ironic part was when Ramsey picked John Richards, the most lethal striker in the box in the First Division that season, he played him out on the right wing with that big goon Chivers down the middle.
JRs only cap and he never got selected again.

Well i for one was still buzzing from our win over Villa when I woke up today and saw news about Jarvo for England!! Made me very happy for the young lad, and at just 24y years of age has a big future, hopefully while still with Wolves :) Good luck Jarvo ya a marvel and deserve it for your hard work and consistency!! Pure class mate!
Love da Wolves!!
ps: thanyou to Villa fan, baggies fan and Gills fan for your kind words :)

Was reading this on the tube in Metro and the Evening Standard. Bought a smile to my face especially seeing a Wolverhampton story is making it nationally. Well done.

Well done Matt..it looks like in the summer were going to have more of a problem holding on to our best players, than bringing them in.(if we stay up that is).
Fully deserved and well done Jarvo, lets hope you make it into the full squad against Wales, with the very least a place on the bench, and not get discarded without getting a look in like last time!

All the posts from JtH and there are LOTS of them, saying Jarvis will be going to a big club at the end of the season. One thing is for sure Boing Boing Jack. If thats the case he most certainly won’t be on his way to Sandwell.
