Wolves boss wants Jamie O’Hara ‘for a long time’
Monday 28th February 2011, 11:30AM GMT.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today revealed he wants to keep Jamie O’Hara at Molineux “for a long time”.
O’Hara has become an instant hit with fans and scored the second goal of his loan spell in Saturday’s 4-0 triumph over Blackpool.
And, with Wolves having negotiated an option for a permanent deal in the summer, McCarthy is hoping to keep the midfielder at the club.
“He has already made a difference to us and it’s great to have him around the place as well as in the team,” said McCarthy.
“He makes us play, he gets on the ball and you can see why he’s been a Tottenham player. Hopefully he will be a Wolves player for a long time.
“I see him as a bit of a throwback. He’s like an old-fashioned footballer.
“He loves playing, he’s chirpy around the place and has always got a comment about something.
“He’s brought a lot to the club. He’s a player I want to keep and a player who wants to come here as well. He’s helped us already.
“He won’t be able to play next week (against Spurs) but he probably needs a rest. He’s only just come back from rehab and he’s played in all our games and been terrific.”
O’Hara has reiterated his interest in making the loan move permanent in the summer. “I want to go somewhere where I am going to play every week and I want to be settled somewhere for a good three or four years,” he said.
Saturday’s victory took Wolves out of the Premier League relegation zone on goal difference but McCarthy is refusing to read any significance into the latest standings.
“May 22 (the final day of the season) is all I’m interested in,” he said.
“Being out of the bottom three on May 22 will suit me fine, whether it’s by goal difference and the skin of my teeth I’m not bothered. Let’s just stay in the Barclays Premier League for next season.
“It would be great to do what we did last season again but it’s only May 22 that I’m interested in.
“Saturday was a good day for us but we’ve got Spurs next and that will be another really tough one. Of course it is a boost to go out of the bottom three but May 22 is what really matters.”

A quality player and considering he probably isn’t fully-fit yet, it’s incredible.
Would love to see him in the middle with Guerdoira and Jarvis and Hammill on the flanks and Milijas joining them when we play 5 in midfield.
Looking forward to the tribute to Deano next Sunday V Spurs and a positive result.

Well, Mad Mick… Please make sure you keep us in this division then. A few more Blackpool results and he will be staying!
Also, please don’t bring Ward on again like you did on Saturday . It was a plain ridiculous subsitution, just like your subs against WBA.
And what’s Milijas done to you this time? It’s pretty obvious to most of us that him and O’hara are our best midfield partnership!!

Jamie, if you happen to be reading this and you are in any way wavering in your decision to stick around in Wolverhampton and make it your home, I have two words for you: The Newhampton. Once you have felt yourself nuzzle into the warmth of its cheery embrace, you will never want to leave Wolverhampton for as long as you live.

Great performance. The only reason im worried about Sundays game is he cant play as he is on loan from Tottenham.
Any news on Hammill or Zubar, both went off injured.
Also well done to Sylvan for coming on and finishing proceedings. I fear Fletcher is going to be a bit peeved by now though.

It was good to see Steers stay on his feet when pushed in the face and not go down on the floor rolling about like most footballers these days. Well done Steers, it looks so unprofessional all that playacting. UTW

@ Number 2 i think your Milijas comment is far from the truth. Ohara and Milijas are very siimilar. I think MM tactics were super against Blackpool. D.Edwards is a quality CM he’s one of them players that makes the team tick. he runs everywhere and also has a bit of quality.
The reason Edwards should play for me is because he is diferent. The Ohara cross in the first half that Edwards nearly scored off was a run that NO OTHER cm at our clubwould do (out of the ones that are fit anyway)
Ohara isnt going to run into the box too much as he is a playmaker, much like Milijas.
Edwards gave us terrific balance and he started the move off for the first goal (by somehow out muscling 3 Bpool players), which was, the most important goal.

You plank, it was Ward who came on and set up the fourth goal!
Anyway, didn’t expect West Ham to beat Liverpool, so I think we will now need 39 points to stay up!
Up the Wolves!

Quality player, at least I’ve stopped wondering if Guediora might make it back. Obviously now we are out of the bottom 3 we will be in a worse position if we get dragged back in! 10 more games to stay positive though and we’ll be OK.
Morning Pete mate. Remind us where you live again?

Based on his performances for us this season we could build a team around him. He’s looked on a different level compared to the other players, his speed of thought and vision is excellent.
I think him and Milijas would be a great partnership. I still don’t think Henry has the vision or passing ability to do damage, Milijas can play the holding role. Alternatively, a midfield three consisting of Guedioura when fit would be great too.
I did think Edwards played well on Sat but he’s still not a regular starter for me. It also looks like Jones will be on his way, which if we stay up suits me fine. O’Hara is twice the player he is anyway.
all that needs sorting is our defence. I wonder if Mouyokolo will ever make the grade? Him and Fletcher are our forgotten men despite costing £9M!
Another plus point from Sat was that we looked good when Doyle was on the right and Jarvis was on the left, with Ebanks down the middle. This gives a great attacking option and might work well at home over the coming weeks.
If we can stay up this season we have a good platform to build from, as long as Mick can drop his favourites and bring in a few players like O’Hara.
He certainly has breathed new life into the the team. Seemed to be everywhere on the pitch on Saturday. If he was’nt on the ball, he was shouting and cajoling at the other players throughout the game. Very impressive.
I believe we will retain our Premiership status and the first signing on 23rd May must be Jamie O’Hara.
Well done the lads against Blackpool.Milijas and O`hara must surely play together in midfield sorry Mick but your favourites have to go.I think it is ludicrous that O`hara cannot play on Saturday,if a club doesn`t want a player then why should they be able to say he can`t play for a team playing against them?Saturdays match against Spurs is rightly so going to be a tribute match for Dean Richards so come on lads lets give Deano a good send off with a victory.
rich64, ward passed the ball to ebanks for the last goal, imagine if it was 0-0, im sure you would have raved about the substitution then.
and milijas and o’hara can’t play in the middle together as they are both attacking midfielders and as you need one to attack and one to protect the back four to repel counter attacks.
o’hara cant play against spurs so milijas will play. utw

We stood at Fratton Park end of last season and watched Jamie O’Hara win trophy afeter trphy for player of the year.
Can see why now.
Mick refers to him as an old fashioned footballer. He reminded me of Mike Bailey the way he powered his way forward through the opposition….and those knocks and touches supporting his team mates, class! Pity he can’t play against Spurs, but, he will make all the difference on this run in.
I got a few mates who are Blues noses and I don’t begrudge them winning something at long last, but, what is gratifying are the Arsenal red faces. How many newspapers and TV interviews did you read last week about how long they’ve had to wait (SIX years !) to win silverware ? It’s typical of the pure arrogance that surrounds the so called top four (now five). They should come to the West Midlands and learn some patience !
We’ll all have to change our song about them= Blouses not winning anything when they come to town.
Finally…Come on you Clayheads

Spanish, it would be difficult for any player to play aginst the club who holds his contract. Remember Spurs still pay a lot of his wages and he could be back there in the summer having scored a goal that could put them out of the Champions League. Think about it.

12 SPANISH RAY none of the wolves players can play on SATURDAY.They have to play SUNDAY!lol.
O’Hara as shown that he is a very good player bordering on excellent.Class player who as only figured in a handful of games after injury, yet he as settled in very quickly and is playing as well as anyone yet he does not have the games under his belt.Hunt was bought for 4million injured and when he came back he was poor or just was not able to get match fit.

As i wrote on here last week, Jamie O’Hara reminds me of Mike Bailey, a good old fashioned midfielder, who always drove his team/players forward, and never stopped urging/shouting at his team mates. He was a great player and a great captain, has i think if he stays here Jamie will be one day for Wolves, he’s always shouting postive things to the other players urging them forwards ,and leads by example, looking every bit the class player he is. Karl Henry has always been a favourite player of mine, but he doesn’t seem to motivate those around him as much as O’Hara’s done since being here. But Karl’s strengh is more of breaking the play up in front of him,so their is a difference in their style of play, but together i think they make a very good partnership. UTW:

Sorry mate, I’d rather not give you that information, you might start stalking me. But since you are taking an interest, you might want to know that they have invented these things called trains, they’re sort of like giant metal worms with wheels on, and they can take you more or less anywhere of a weekend in a couple of hours, should you want to, for example, visit your home city. Remarkable, the modern age, isn’t it?

13 – Yes, you do need 1 to attack and one to defend, well, you do if you play wingers too, but in case it missed your brain cell, we played 5 in the middle, not 4.
personally, I would have dropped the hapless Henry, sent Ward off on loan to some League 2 club, released Edwards on a free and played Blake alongside Doyle in a 4-4-2 but hey, I’m only a fan :)

The prospect of O,Hara and Guediora playing togeather is mouthwatering remember Guedioras goal in the last match last season what a strike. We would never have to worry about goals coming from midfield again.

Disappointed with the obvious anti henry campaign that is gripping the message boards; henry i feel gives us the balance that we need and allows the likes of the winges and in the case of Saturday o’hara and edwards to have a free reign to ‘bomb” forward; when we play 5 in midfield we look a much better outfit and create chances, however without henry’s defensive prowess the balance of the midfield would be way out in my opinion!

O’Hara has been a breath of fresh air since he arrived on loan, and with him in the side I feel alot more confident about our Premiership survival.

I think we played well on saturday but surely expected us to start 4-4-2 against Blackpool considering was a must win game and they have bad defence. This time we won it anyway and im pleased for that. Edwards a good game with a lot of running which is especially important against a 10 men team..
O’Hara is quality, sign him of course..
Would be exciting to see a midfield with Guedioura,O’Hara and Milijas if we play 5 midfield otherwise Milijas can come in off the bench late second half..with Jarvis and Hammill(or Hunt or Kightly or Mujangi-Bia when fit, we have so many :))..
They would be able to feed our 2 strikers(could be Doyle/SEB, SEB/Fletch, Doyle/Fletch) but i think we would benefit playing 2 upfront and score more goals..
Our defence really has played well the alst games so no need to change there..
O’Hara would be exactly the sort of player we need to sign if we stay up? I agree Edwards had a very good game on Saturday. Saying that everyone did, although Hennessey flapped at a couple but he has greatly improved. Special mentions must go out though to Stears and big George – both getting better by the game.
I do not think that Henry or Ward warrant the abuse they get on here. Henry had a solid game on Saturday and as others have pointed out, when employed up the pitch Ward is a useful performer. I do wonder what has happened with Fletcher but SEB’s last goal was top drawer.
Come on Stoke!

As much as I like Guediora, It’s the hope / possibility of getting Kightly back that I want to see.. if Jarvo can do it in the prem, Kightly should storm it!!
I believe we have the personnel, now all we need is a little luck and we’ll be half way up the table!
I have to say I was disappointed that no defender was brought in to replace VD, and that O’Hara’s signing seemed not so important at that time. That’s why I take my hat off to Mick! He gets plenty of stick on these pages, but let’s be fair and give credit where it’s due – he knows what he’s doing!

They all played their part on Saturday. Never seen Karl Henry push forward so much, with Jamie O’Hara always covering. Dave Edwards was probably the best player on the park for the first half hour, then O’Hara took over. The back line continues to improve ‘cos Beattie was a right handful until Campbell got sent off, then he understandably faded, but well played Stearman and Berra. Seb’s second was class finishing.

Great player, great contribution. Lets hope we do keep him. I do think theres much more to come from the lad, Hes only 24, and has just come back from a long term injury.
RichWolf64 – Yes, because its not like Ward set up our fourth goal is it. Its fair ebnough that you dont like the player, and its fair enough that you think hes not good enough, but theres no denying that when he came on he contributed to another goal for us, which if it does come down to goal difference at the end of the season, means bringing ward on was probably an inspired substitution. At the end of the day, Ward did nothing wrong when he came on, and helped us to a better result, yet you still criticise the substitution.
Oh, and when we do sell Ward, i gaurentee it will be for much more than what we payed for the lad, and there will be a host of championship clubs wanting to sign him.

I think there is one player not getting the credit he deserves on this thread.
Dave Edwards.
His constant running and energy all over the greatly improves us both offensively and defensively.
We pressure opposition defenders much further up the field when he plays, and due to his attacking runs players like o’hara/milijas are given space/options to make that killer pass.
I bet is someone looks over the stats our win percentage with him involved will be high.

No, I thought he was our worst player to be honest with you. I’m not sure if you were watching the right player. When I saw one of Portsmouth’s games on TV last season, they fielded two OUTSTANDING players. Namely, O’Hara and Prince-Boateng (I think that’s how it’s spelt) Mm should have bought both of these two players at the onset of the season and we would be well up the table by now instead of the fight we have now to survive.
At least MM has had the sense to get O’Hara, albeit only on loan for the moment. Now all fans can see a “class player”

that saturday was one of the best individual performances ive seen at wolves for years, 2nd half we started off thinking we had won the game and ohara dragged everyone up to his level by doing a captains job, it was great to see him have a go at berra for unnessasarily passing the ball back to wayne instead of giving him a little ball to his feet, the times milijas has asked for the same ball only to be ignored,
ohara is a natural leader and showed henry what a captain should be doing, talking, rollocking players and getting on the ball and leading by example

Welsh Wolf – O’hara, has had a long term injury, and has only rcently came back from it. If we had signed him at the start of the season, he probably would have only just started playing first team football now anyway. As for Boateng, now playing at AC Milan, do you really think he would have come to a relegation fighting team?

How on earth anyone can come onto the site and critise any of the team after Saturday’s performance is beyond me.
This is our biggest win in the top flight since 1980!
We dominated a very poor Blackpool team for the first to the last minute. I could have brought by pipe and slippers to the game I was so relaxed.
It will be interesting to see how Mick sets the team up for Sunday’s match as Sylvan as certainly gave Mick something to think about.
Lets just hope that Hammill’s injury isn’t serious as hwe has been brilliant since signing for us as well as O’Hara.

I don’t know whether McCarthy considered buying O’Hara in the summer or not, but the fact that he had a serious back injury which could have meant him being out for most of the season, probably ruled him out. Bear in mind we were also signing another player (Hunt) who also was coming back from a serious foot injury.
I’m not sure what the FA rules are regarding signing a player who is on loan to another club but wants to make the deal permanent.
Can a deal go through at the stage of the season?

I was merely pointing out that I found it bizarre to bring him on, when Milijas was on the bench. Actually, he didn’t play badly at all, I’m not disputing that, and yes, he set up Seb, but, I will still maintain it was a bizarre substitution.
To balance this out, I thought O’Hara stood head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch ( Jarvis excluded) as the best player on the pitch. It’s a pity we don’t own anyone nearly as good, after £36 million spent on this team.
I think the Tottenham game on Sunday will be very very interesting. This is probably our last really tough assignment of the season, so if we got 3 points, then safety will be beckoning, but realistically, I wouldn’t be unhappy with a point.
I just hope the Boggies are down come May, so that we aren’t both scrapping for 3 points at the end of the season.

Well done to the Blues. What it mean’t to the bluesnoses was just the same as 1974 and 1980 to us.That winner right in the corner from Johnny Richards in 74 and beating the then current European Champions in 80,even having the grace to applaud a beaten Brian Clough as he went down the tunnel. That is what you can get Mr Morgan if you invest in the team rather than spend millions on the ground.31 years and still counting.

Also, i pray to god the baggies arent down when we play em in may because i would love it if we were the ones that sent em down. I think that would make the perfect endiong to the season. Our safety at the expense of dooming them to relegation. And i thionk everyone on here would agree.
But i bet that would annoy you cos i reckon your a baggie.

Wolf72 i agree and made comment earlier. Its the numpties like RichWolf64. He says he lost the ball wand passed side ways, i think he wasn’t watching the game. Regularly won the ball and then kept pocession and made 2 or 3 diagonal 30 to 40 yard passes. As for shooting most of the time he was faced with a wall of players so decided to use the wing, you could not have been watching the game and the only chance they had was from a corner that he turned round the post. Get a grip, life and take off the blinkers and by the way i’m not an MM fan i think the money hes spent has been wasted, we finished the game with nine of our championship winning team.

RichWolf64 – It’s not really that bizarre. Because of his work ethic & versatility, Ward is important to our squad. He has shown at times he can cut it at this level and at times, he’s looked a little out of his depth. He’ll only overcome that inconsistency with game time & experience, Saturday was a great chance to give him game time and Mick gave it to him…… it’ll help make one of our players better, which is good !

We all want hum to stay! Saying that, and the “one match at a time mentality,” having a team capable of holding into the ball, as well as we did last year against Spurs, in both home and away victories, is crucial so as to keep their top players off the ball; Karl Henry, as well as Ward, negate this happening. We should hope Mick shunts messrs Mijas and Jones into the mix, in place of Henry and the missing O’Hara. Let’s see if we do indeed stay up, and if so, horse trader Harry gives us a cut price on the aforementioned midfield wizard, Mike Baley’esque, etc! Simple, that, managing and all that comes with!

On your other points recently
1. No attending 7 games does not make you as qualified to comment as someone who attends more. The logical extension of your argument would be that someone who never goes would be as qualified to comment as you.

Re: point 1. Yes it does. We’re all equally as clueless as each other as to how football works, unless of course a) we have played the game professionally, which neither of us have or b) we have played countless seasons of Championship Manager, which you may well have done.
Re: point 2. Yep, you may well.
As for the rest of it. we here at PeteNuts apologise for the timbre and pejorativeness(!) of our recent postings, but harsh truths may often offend those they afflict.

Can see theres lots of football manager 2011 players out there, ones that love there team to attack attack.Something of the barcalona mould,no consideration for the defensive midfielder or the job he’s expected to do.Especially love the fact they’d play 3 attack minded players in the centre and 2 out wide, makes me laugh.Bet your games go something like this, won 5-2,won 6-4,lost 5-4,drew 7-7.Well all I can say is stick to the virtual side of things and let supermick stick to the much more important non-virtual side of things.

A couple of people on here,I forget exactly who, posted on a regular basis for the last 18 months saying that we should sign O’Hara.Well they were right weren’t they? Shows what a bit of quality can do,if we go down it will be becauser we have not signed enough quality.Perhaps even the Happy Clappers can see the logic in this.I do not see the comparisons with Mike Bailey though. For a start O’Hara has not got a barrel chest and is a left footer. Both were busy midfielders and combative. But Bailey was the tackler playing the Henry role.O’Hara to me is more like a Alex Rae.

richwolf64, i made a comment trying to explain the formation to you and you replied with : it might have missed my one brain cell that we played 5 in midfield???, oh well at least i did’nt have to sink to your level with abuse as the other normal posters have answered you perfectly. utw

Interesting to see that Man City want Hennessey and will make Michael Johnson a make weight with a couple of million to make it happen…yes, yes, yes, yes! This would be a great deal for Wolves and we can replace Hennessey with a box commanding Keeper, Al Habsi, Mignolet, Given etc make the deal happen!

Two points here I think.
1st A keeper of good quality should be signed prior to Hennessey being sold.
2nd Cash only deal for him! Michael Johnson has spent more time in rehab (injuries) than playing.
Failing that Hennessey should stay.
Mind you I would think that if Arsenal want him a deal including Carlos Vela as makeweight could be good.

Wot’s with the ‘Happy Clappers’ ?
God forbid you’ll be using ‘muppet’ and ‘Mick’s love child’ next.
Please don’t say you’re turning into a Richwolf64 !
I accept that O’Hara hasn’t got Bailey’s barrel chest, but, I think your fooled by his all over number two when you compare him to Alex Rae.
Last time I tried to be a Happy Clapper I dropped me pie !

I think to be fair, most people would say it was you. !

Cuddly, Someone else as well as you compared him to Bailey.Don’t you also accept Bailey was the tackler in front of the back four?.But there was more to his game than just that,of course.Do you remember that first half display against City in the League Cup final? Perhaps the best midfield display I have ever seen from a Wolves player.I can also remember a great display by Mick in the middle of defence away to Forest.Anyway why aren’t you in India watching the cricket?

78) Chris, Mike Bailey was the complete ‘wing half’ along the lines of Slater and Flowers, I think that’s why MM descibed Jamie O’Hara as an old fashioned footballer. I just hope he goes on to serve and inspire Wolves like Bailey did. He was the guv’nor
(I was in my prime as a Sunday Morning footballer in the 70s, I tried to model my game on Mike Bailey, but, played more like Barnum & Bailey)
Used up all me brownie points in Oz, will have to settle for Sky coverage and a few takeaways from the local Dilshad.
PS For those of you making notes; I missed Eddie Clamp from above comparison because IMO he was more like the midfield stopper we see now adays. Okay ?

We are having a polystyrene Jackass especially hand-made made to present to you when we beat the Baggies to stay up. We’ve asked Stephen Ward if he’ll present it.

If you had a brain cell between you, I suspect you would be dangerous. As it is, you are harmless numpties with no clue as to what does or does not, make a good footballer.
Sue, I won’t even get on to the offside rule with you :)
I will stay off these boards until the end of season. I hope and pray we are still premiership by then, I think it’s hanging in the balance, and it shouldn’t be. That’s my point, and it always has been.

54 – Hey, someone with a brain!! He he, I would get bored at work if I didn’t !!
We are all fans on here, it’s supposed to be a bit of harmless banter, but some folk get all hot under the collar.

Yes he’s (O’Hara) been a breath of fresh air since he came to us. Not afraid to get forward like our other midfielders are and proof already that he believes his feet are for shooting and not simply running around on! Don’t see why we cant nick it against Spurs on Sunday, their nothing special. What we have to improve on though or face certain relegation is our terrible away record, reckon we need at least two or three more away wins to survive.

Rich Wolf, There is plenty of room on here for all opinions, don’t stop posting, that will mean they have shouted you down.Free speech mate, that is what my old man and thousands of others went over to Normandy to protect.I may disagree with what you say,but if it is your honest opinion, you keep saying it.

Can’t see you holding on to O’Hara. Too many bigger clubs will be in for him. JACK the HAT.

I don’t agree with most of what he says but I agree about free speech, don’t think anybody is trying to shout him down..
I think we know his honest opinion Micks no good,Karls no good Wards no good, it’s goes on and on.
I suppose he gets people going so perhaps he isn’t bad on here..stirs things up, I think perhaps he has a big wooden spoon. Just occasionally it would be nice if he said something positive…
