Wolves 4 Blackpool 0

Wolves climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone with a comfortable win against Blackpool on a day tinged with sadness at Molineux, writes Steve Madeley.

Matt Jarvis, Jamie O’Hara and were on target before substitute Sylvan Ebanks-Blake scored twice as Wolves took care of matters on the pitch to delight their fans, who paid tribute throughout the game to former defender Dean Richards.

He died this morning aged just 36.

The scale of the victory took Wolves out of the bottom three and left rivals Albion in the drop zone for the first time since the opening week of the season.

Wolves were aided by the red card for Blackpool striker DJ Campbell, who thrust a hand into the face of Richard Stearman just before half-time with his side trailing just 1-0.

The match was played in front of a record crowd for the modern Molineux of 29,086.

Wolves made a dream start and were ahead in the second minute through Jarvis’s fourth goal of the season.

Ronald Zubar fed David Edwards with a clever pass down the right touchline line and he picked out Adam Hammill, who had taken up a central position 20 yards from goal.

He moved the ball to the left, where Jarvis was unmarked to curl a shot past Richard Kingson from the edge of the area.

But the game was scrappy for most of the opening exchanges and the visitors could have claimed a freak equaliser when David Vaughan’s left-wing cross dropped over Wayne Hennessey but ran away from the onrushing Keith Southern.

In the 14th minutes Wolves could have doubled their advantage when a neat move down the left ended with Jamie O’Hara squaring for Edwards, who got ahead of Craig Cathcart but saw his shot beaten away by Kingson.

Wolves continued to hold sway and another chance arrived in the 23rd minutes as Blackpool failed to clear from the edge of their box and the ball broke to Hammill, who drove a shot just over.

The hosts had the ball in the net again on 19 minutes when George Elokobi powered home a header from a corner by O’Hara but referee Neil Swarbrick had spotted a push on Kingson by Edwards.

Blackpool had a chance to test Hennessey eight minutes before half-time when a crunching challenge in midfield from Karl Henry saw the ball break for substitute Luke Varney on the corner of the box but he lashed a shot into the side netting.

Blackpool’s task became even harder two minutes before half-time thanks to Campbell’s moment of madness.

He was involved in a tussle for the ball with Stearman but reacted inexplicably by shoving the defender in the face and giving the referee no option but to brandish the red card.

Wolves tried their luck twice in the early moments of the second half, first when Kingson made a flying save from Kevin Foley and then when the keeper made a comfortable catch from O’Hara.

But McCarthy’s men would not be denied their second goal and it arrived on 54 minutes as Blackpool squandered possession in midfield and O’Hara drove towards goal before hitting a low shot that skidded past Kingson and nestled in the bottom corner.

That goal killed the game as a contest and the rest of the afternoon was low-key apart from Ebanks-Blake’s goals.

The substitute arrived unmarked in the six-yard box with 12 minutes to go to prod home right-wing cross by the hard-working Kevin Doyle.

And in the final minute he raced clear and fired a low shot past Kingson.

For a couple of days, one hopes, all the season long defeatists who are “band wagon” at best, get to take some time off fom their gloaming and moaning. SEB’s late goals could be vital, and it’s about time the pressure is left to boil up for West Ham and are Black Country miscreants down the road. Great result we ””drilled 4 right through the Blackpool rock today”’ it was also good to keep a clean sheet. Since Mick has settled on the same back four, they seem to have got a good understanding as a unit which happens if you give the same 4 players time together, and its good to read nice comments about Richard Stearman, who’s come in for lots of flak this sesaon, some of it justified lots of it not. But since Mick’s left them together he’s settled and played really well, we must remember he’s still only a young lad learning with every game he plays, given time and encouragement he could become another Dean Richards? R.I.P. I was also very pleased for SEB ,to come on as sub and score 2 goals was superb, he’s a natural goalscorer and given regular games he will always score goals no matter what league he plays in. And another excellent game by Jamie O’Hara it seemed, and a good return by David Edwards too, but Kevin Doyle seemed to get m.o.t.m. awards with most radio stations, sky tv, glad to see Matty Jarvis take his goal well, that will give him a huge boost too. It was good to see a ‘full house’ 29,00065 roaring the lads on. Once again Great Result Lads Onwards and Upwards: UTW:

One of the nice things about yesterday’s win was that at 2-0 up we kicked on and scored more goals when we could have sat back and played out a comfortable win- we all know how crucial goal difference could be.
A few other points- even though Kevin Foley is unlucky not to start we are benefitting from a settled back four; Stearman is proving his worth- in my opinion he is good enough to play in the Premiership and has responded well to a run in the side; Jamie O’Hara absolute quality; the Blackpool right back never got close to Jarvis all afternoon, he didn’t make one tackle on him; like Stearman, David Edwards, despite what some people say, is a Premiership player; Doyle worked hard and responded well when moved wide right; great to see SEB get his goals- he’s a finisher and is unlucky not to start more often.
A great result but now we need to kick on, something we have struggled to do all season.

It’s funny how every time we lose you see a hundred comments on how badly we played, yet we win 4-0 and not half the response. Some people were born to be miserable and they’re the fans we don’t need in the Molineux come 3:00pm next week against Spurs. Will O’hara be eligible against them? I hope so because he along with edwards have a good balance of work ethic between them. I’m too young to know Deano but if he played in gold and black I’ll sing his name every week! Not a word for Mick McCarthy on here either yet? No Adam so he went 4-5-1 and allowed us to control the game from start to finish, then at 2-0 to take off a full back and put Ebanks-Blake on was a great move too! Credit where it’s due Mick, tactics were near perfect for that!

R.I.P Deano. Class act on and off the pitch, unlike many footballers today.

Well done to the lads today, nobody put a foot wrong, and i have to say, certain players like edwards and ward did well for the time they were on the pitch. Fantastic cross by Doyle for Blakes first goal, which i think shows that he should be in the team, but maybe as a winger, as he spends much of his time there anyway. The league table is not looking as bad after just 1 win. Hopefully we can get a few results now to help us climb the table. Tottenham will be tough though, and im not expecting anything.

Hammill and O’hara, seem to be 2 fantastic signings, and it would seem that our January transfer business wasnt as bad as all the doom merchants made out. What were they saying again? Hammill was just a championship player that wouldnt make the step up. He’s done pretty well so far and i think has justified his 500k sigining. I thought the numpties had learnt theyre lesson after the january of last year where they judged guedioura before he had even played. Obviously not.

A really good game of football. Jamie O Hara played really well and I believe brought other team members to life. You could hear him demanding the ball from the upper reaches of the Steve Bull stand. I hope that Karl Henry can learn from him with ball distribution. The match announcer did a good job of getting the four sections of the ground supporting our team, the Billy Wright stand fans sounded loud. We will lose Jamie against Spurs perhaps time for Milijas to take his place and pass the ball around. Congratulations to all the team and coaching staff, long may these results continue.

Calm down, calm down, WWFC are still going down ! Then as Moxey says, any player assets will be sold, can’t see that making a great deal, Fletcher is worth half of his buying fee as it is, never mind as a Championship player, Doyle might fetch £6m, Hennessey £3m, Jarvis £4m, Henry £3m, Hammill £2m, EBB £2m, the rest will probably stay as they have no essential value; If WWFC do stumble back to the Premier league, will Morgan find the £80m for the players needed to compete? Not likely.

At the moment with 11 of those 21 games played we are 3 points better off than I thought we would be, so fans and supporters keep the faith. I was going to name players who are doing a great job but suffice to say since O Hara has joined us the players have been lifted head and shoulders above what they were.

No 25 – Trevb21 – You obviously do not understand the role of the lone striker in a 4-5-1. Doyle is the perfect exponent. It’s not all about the lone striker scoring ( I admit Doyle’s goal tally is not great). Kevin Doyle is class and Fletcher, albeit a different sort of player, is not in the same league.

Let’s not go overboard. Blackpool were the worst team I’ve seen at Molineux in 2 seasons.

Mad Mick did his best to cobble our chances. Why go 4-5-1 at home to Blackpool? If we had played 4-4-2 from the start it would have been in double figures.

Why bring on Ward ?? What on earth was that about?

Why drop Milijas, him and o’hara together is a class partnership, but no, he has to play Edwards.

Great result never the less , despite mad mick’s ineptitued , as usual.

He must be gutted WE WON 4-0. And, dont get me wrong, i thought milijas would have done a better job than ward, however he did set up that crucial 4th goal which has kept us out of the bottom 3 this morning. Grow up and start supporting the team rather than looking to criticse everything and anything you can.
On antoher plus note, i think elokobi is coming on a lot and is a much better LB than ward. Hes still only young and missed a crucial yr in his development when we won the championship so give him a bit more time.

To all the enthuiastic fans knocking the moaners. Yes, well done Wolves, but, this type of week-end has occured before. Yes the team played well, but let us all say well done to all concerned, now prove to all of the fans , that you can do this on a regular basis. Morgan may own the ground, Moxey may run the club and McCarthy may manage the team, but, the club belongs to the supporters, no supporters and you have a new housing estate

Note that , whilst Doyle was ,as always full of energy, it was EBlake who showed what he can do; be it only ten men were in opposition he demostrated given achance he can score goals. Stearman showed he can defend, but lets wait and see if he can be consistant, he needs to keep calm and not panic

However, class always shows and that was O’Hara, yes, a good move would have been Milijas to replace Henry, and then you would have seen O,Hara and Milijas along with Edwards ripping Blackpool apart

fantastic result, the key was that we kept attacking them for 90 mins and had plenty of shots on goal. We didnt sit back and try to defend a lead which we are not so good at. Jarvis early goal gave us a dream start. SEBs second goal showed real clinical finishing.

But I dont think we should get carried away, blackpool really missed their talisman adams but we took advantage of the sending off and made them pay. On another day it could have been different.

SEB must start as the lone striker with doyle on the wing for me. We need goals to stay up and Kevin hasnt looked like scoring all season.

I think we need 5 more wins or 15 points to be safe. I dont think 40 points will be enough especially with West Ham beating liverpool

Mick will save us (i hope)

WhyKnockDownourGround – You are a muppet. First of all we beat them 4-0. What more do you want. Next, Blackpools defence is always bad, they only win games by attacking, which we prevented them from doing. They had 2 chances all game, and that was before they had a player sent off, both of those chances were off target. Theyre keeper made some fantastic saves and prevented the score line from being much higher. Holloway had to bring off a player because he was innefective against our 5 man midfield, would it have been the same aganst a 4 man midfield, i very much doubt it.

Why bring on ward…. Ummm maybe to get us that fourth goal that could be crucial if it goes down to goal difference.

Why play Edwards…. Ummm maybe help set up our first goal and help ohara get his second. By the way, for the first goal, he closed down the ball superbly in midfield, made a fantastic run and made a good pass to hammill. His performance probably should have been topped off with a goal, from that superb run, which theyre keeper saved brilliantly.

Theres always going to be ifs buts and maybes, but we played well, scored 4, kept a clean sheet against an attack that has scored more goals than tottenham this season, and all because we didnt let them play theyre preferd style of football. Who are you to say playing different players, or different formations would have resulted in a better performance.

PeteNuts – I still think 38 points will be just enough, maybe taking into account goal difference aswell. I dont think West ham will go on a run now, but even if they did, i reckon, Blackpool will fall down the table as they have been doing for a fair few games now. Especially with theyre star striker now missing 3 matches for them. If i am wrong, i hope Wolves will get enough points to stay up, but i just cant see too many teams at the bottom improving theyre form much over the last 10 games. I think, or possibly hope that we will pick up another 14 points over the next 10 games, hopefully we can go on that much needed run of wins.

tammy pacs – If you think we will be selling Doyle for anything less than £10 mill, your wrong. I dont know about henn, but he said he wanted to stay. Jarvis is worth at least 8 mill now. We wont sell Hammill this soon after buying him. I presume EBB is Blake. We payed 2.5 mill for him when we was in the championship. He scored loads of goals there and i think has proven hes a decent prem scorer as well, He has to be worth around 6-7 mill. I dont know if you have put theyre values down because were in the championship, but in case you dont know, we dont have to sell, unlike many other relegated clubs. Therefore the players we do sell, im sure will be sold for as much as we can get for them, We definately wont sell them for any lower than what we value them at, as we dont have to.

Saying all that, I think we will still be in the prem next season. How you can say we are still definately going to be relegated after we finally climb out of the relegation zone, and our recent form is better than almost all our relegation rivals is beyond me.

What a surprise from the KO we didn’t pass the ball back to the Goal Keeper and we managed to score an early goal because we had the ball. Also HENRY actualy played the ball forward is this because he has watched O’hara and noticed what a difference it makes.
Only problem I have is why does MM always bring WARD on?. He showed his skill when he tried to control the ball but it hit his standing leg. He must be on a large bonus for playing. MM had FLETCHER and MILIJAS on the bech whom are far better players, no wonder they both look brassed off when WARD get on the field every match.
