Wayne Hennessey: I’m over that error
Friday 25th February 2011, 11:30AM GMT.
Wolves keeper Wayne Hennessey today insisted he is over his mistake against Albion and ready to lead the club to safety.
The 24-year-old Wales international admitted he was at fault for Carlos Vela’s last-gasp equaliser in Sunday’s 1-1 draw.
But he will not allow it to affect his recent superb form as Wolves prepare for the ‘must-win’ Molineux clash against Blackpool tomorrow.
“I hated it — I want to beat West Brom as much as any of our fans, especially with my mate Boaz playing in goal for them as well,” said Hennessey.
“I should have held on to the shot for their goal, but I didn’t see it until late because of all the bodies in the way.
“It was one of those things that happen, and you have to get on with it.
“I put it behind me as soon as the game was over.
“I read a few comments from people saying I fumbled it and if they want to say that, fine.
“I know I played well in the game.
“I analysed it afterwards — like I always do when I go through it with Pat Mountain (goalkeeping coach) — and it won’t affect me.
“I know I’ve kept us in games a few times too.”
Hennessey added: “I’ve got a massive responsibility to try to keep Wolves in this league.
“If we want to go back down, we could just retreat into a little hole, but we want to come out fighting so we can progress and do well in this league.”
Hennessey has been hailed as one of the best keepers in the Premier League on recent form and feels he is having the best spell of his career.
“I look at how I did against Bolton and Arsenal recently and it’s the best I’ve played,” he said.
Vela’s equaliser was the fourth in injury-time to hit Wolves this season after similar efforts at Fulham, Manchester United and Bolton and Hennessey admitted they’re having a devastating effect on the players.
“It’s painful — and nowhere more so than when playing in it,” he said.
“When it’s happened in those last couple of minutes it’s killed us and our heads drop.
“But it’s part and parcel of football and you have to get on with it.
“We analyse the games and then we always put any mistakes behind us.”

Good on ya lad, you have been inspirational these last few weeks and heaven only knows we need that to continue tomorrow!
Four points from the two games would make things look a whole lot better so we really need to be turning Blackpool over!
Convinced we can do it with everyone behind the club, MM and the lads! Now is not the time for bitching and back biting we all just need to get behind the boys and then dissect the season once we have secured survival!

Got to say…I’d hardly have called it an error from Hennessey.
He made a save through a crowd of players and it took a very unlucky double richochet…he was palming it away from the goal and the albion goalhanger.

Wasn’t so much the fumble, he also dragged it back in the path of their striker as it was going to Steerman to clear..
It’s one of those things and if he can sort his coming out for crosses better he will be a top keeper.
Win tomorrow is on the cards and we will stay up…
Gold and Proud!!

You Weren’t at fault for me, and many others. The shot should never have been allowed and when you put your keeper in an awkward position (as happened many times in the second half) eventually one is going to cost you. Yes it was unfortunate that you couldn’t keep hold, but that is a reaction moment. Pure instinct.
Also: Too many players too close to you and no one mopping up. Defensive errors first.
Keep up the good work.

We lack mental strength at the death. Zubar and Henn have got us 3 points against Bolton and WBA. We have to win tomorrow.

Just examind the remaining fixtures of the bottom four teams in the Premier League, and this is how I think they’ll finish:
20th Wigan – 34 points
19th Albion – 35 points
18th West Ham – 37 points
17th Wolves – 38 points
Look at the fixtures and you will see why I have got these points. Any team who get more than the points I have mentioned is going to seriously have to play above themselves!
Up the Wolves!

The fault does not lie with Hennessy, its with the midfielder who stood off his man for so long. There should never have been a shot allowed from outside the box.

Wasn’t your fault, it was a crowded penalty area thanks to some strange substitutions. Craddock playing as a third centre back and Ward standing back to admire the shot instead of getting his foot in.

No.1 Wolf72
I agree with you it is at times like this when the Lads need our support more than ever. I to think we can still do it but we do have to stop these injury time goals unless it is a goal for us.

I don’t blame you at all Wayne. It was unlucky. To get down and save it when you saw it late then have misfortune of it hitting your leg and going into Vela’s path. If it hadn’t hit your leg it would have gone for a corner or on another day it would hit your leg and go over!
You have keep us in so many games since you have been back, and no coincidence that we kept clean sheets since you have been back.

Hennessey was only partly at fault. On another day he may well have held onto the ball. But when you are in injury time and only one goal up, surely you have everyone except maybe the centre forward, back defending and preventing the opposition from shooting.
Blackpool play a very cavalier style of football which has to their credit payed off so far. I think Hennessey will be very busy tomorrow, but this is a game we can and should win.

If the manager didn’t insist on a late appearance from his very own ‘golden balls’,
Morrison would’ve been held up better and not allowed to get the shot away in the first place.
Hennessey has saved us a lot of extra embarrassment in previous games.
That’s the worst thing about being a ‘keeper.
One mistake and it’s a goal

6, Punjabi. I have done the same examination of the final fixtures and have predicted the same three to go down as you! I have Wolves on 39 points mind.
Lets hope we are right!!

Spot on Nos 11 and 12.
Hennessey should not be blamed – he has kept us in the game in the past few matches. He made the save and not one defender in view to follow up the rebound when Vela scored.
The real culprit was the player who turned his back on Morrison, just before he shot, rather than trying to get his body in the way as a good defender would have done.
When Jay Bothroyd came on as sub and did the same thing at a free kick a few seasons ago against Watford, which also cost us the match,he was substituted immediately by MM and hardly played again as a regular 1st team player.
MM said then that no defender should do that in a team playing for him. Wonder if we’ll get the same outcome now. I doubt it given the culprit and the unnecessary tactical(?) substitutions that had been made. Why does he have to tinker with things – if it ain’t broke don’t change it!- especially so late in the game?
The real problem however is we have only had five shots on target in the last 270 plus minutes played. Its goals that win matches not clean sheets.

Not your fault Wayne. Was heading out for a corner until it flicked off your foot and into Vela’s path
But it’s all down to Ward not closing down Morrison’s shot. Maybe if Mick didn’t insist on playing his precious Ward, we would’ve won.

Can’t imagine Blackpool getting anything tomorrow we will ROCK their boat.

Hennesy needs a defence in front of him, if McCarthy had bought 2CB’s and a left back, he would have been a superb keeper this season.
Blame McCarthy

As Doyle can’t seem to score even if his life depended on it, then how about this for a formation (given that we seemed to have gone back to 4-5-1).
Hennessey
Zubar Stearman Berra Elikobi
O’Hara Henry Doyle Milijas Jarvis
Fletcher
Doyle can run all day AND hold the ball up, so think he may well be better as an attacking midfielder. Not only that but we can also quickly and easily switch to 4-4-2 if need be.

Wayne you have come back in the team and have performed excellent.I would not go as far as saying you are the best in the premier league like matt as said, but I do beleive you could be…You were not at fault in my opinion, and if you feel you were then dont worry,as for me you are starting to come into your own so keep doing the same lad.Just one other thing “WARD” as cost us 6 games due to his poor positional play and always backing off and giving players two yards space allowing them to manouvere at leisure, you may also find Wayne that WARD had alot to do with the goal, you say you watch the matches to learn, whilst you do this have a look at “WARD”!Maybe you could teach him something as obviously MICK the carrot cant.!

not your fault wayne! ugly shot through a crowd of players think most sensible fans would agree it was just unfortunate as you did palm the ball to safety if it wasn’t for it rebounding back off your foot and to that goalhanging, lucky, albion steptoe then we would of taken all 3 pts.didn’t understand why mm had to upset the shape of the team though with the silly substitutions, after defending so stoutly for 91 mins it was utter madness on mm’s part.3 pts a must now tomorrow and all will look brighter.lets please go 442 mick we need goals, fletcher & seb deserve their chance now surely

You need to man up Wayne, boss your area, and get rid of the ball quicker, you wait for the opposition to get back befor you get rid of the ball, and then a lot of the time you kick the ball straight out or to the opposition..but the main thing is to be boss, anything in your area is yours, dont be a fairy.
