Drop could trigger sale of Wolves players
Friday 25th February 2011, 10:30AM GMT.
Wolves may sell their star players if they go down – despite revealing £9.1m profits, it emerged today.
Yesterday’s healthy balance sheet doesn’t take ‘player power’ into consideration — and relegation could spell the break-up of the current team, chief executive Jez Moxey confessed.
The drop could be greeted by the departure of club record signings Steven Fletcher and Kevin Doyle, Stephen Hunt, Nenad Milijas, Ronald Zubar, captain Karl Henry, Matt Jarvis and Wayne Hennessey.
It would also be difficult to keep Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara, who has the chance to make his loan permanent at the end of the season.
“I really want to talk about us staying up because, if we hold on, I believe we’ll be a much better team next season,” said Moxey.
“But we’re no different from other clubs — we will fight tooth and nail to do what’s right for this club and that might involve selling players.
“Players want to stay in the Premier League. Aston Villa didn’t want to sell James Milner, Newcastle didn’t want to lose Andy Carroll and Manchester United didn’t want to let Ronaldo go. Now look at Torres — the players have most of the power.”
The news comes after the club announced plans to press ahead with its £40m Molineux rebuild. Moxey admitted profit was important to finance the scheme. “These plans have to be able to survive possible relegation and promotion,” he said.
Speaking to the fans’ parliament, Moxey revealed Wolves are set to remain in the black, adding: “We’ll make a profit again this year, although not as much.
“We need to because we also want to continue to invest in new players.”
Manager Mick McCarthy warned points must come before profit. “It’s important to stay up for the players to be playing Premier League football, for the club to be there and for the city to have a Premier League team.”

What a strange two weeks it has been since our last game. I haven’t looked over my neighbour’s fence with as much interest since Pamela Anderson moved in next door and regularly used her trampoline, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.
