Mick McCarthy – late goals won’t scar Wolves
Thursday 24th February 2011, 4:00PM GMT.
Mick McCarthy today insisted Wolves players won’t be “scarred” by the late goals threatening their attempts to escape the drop zone.
Wolves go into Saturday’s clash at home to Blackpool — described by boss McCarthy as a ‘must-win’ — seeking to put their late giveaway against Albion behind them.
The Baggies’ last-gasp equaliser was the fourth goal Wolves have conceded in injury-time this season.
Late strikes at Fulham, Manchester United and Bolton have denied them five points in 2010-11.
And the Molineux chief admits while their giveaways have been costly, they haven’t had an averse effect on the players.
“I can think of five points we’ve lost without even drawing breath — Man United, Fulham, Bolton, West Brom straightaway and had we not conceded those, we’d be sat on 30 points,” said the boss.
“I know every team can say things like that, whether it’s by performances or bad decisions.
“But there are five points that should be in the bag.
“It’s not just concentration — or just one thing that’s happened but that’s certainly cost us.
“The players aren’t getting scarred by it though.
“Albion got a bit of fortune for their goal and it went through a few legs and bounced up — on another day that wouldn’t happen.
“But I don’t think they’ll be scarred by it at all.”
At least one player, Matt Jarvis, showed an improvement on previous weeks at The Hawthorns and McCarthy was delighted with the winger’s return to form.
“He was excellent in the first half on Sunday especially, although he wasn’t at it quite so much in the last half an hour,” he said.
“Whether the missed chance affected him or not I don’t know, but they went on to have more of the game anyway. I want all of the players to be performing at their best with 11 games left to play.”
“I just think it’s impossible to be at your optimum for 38 games of the season.
“If in the games when someone isn’t at their best, the others play better and vice-versa, then you keep the team on an even level of performances, and Jarvis played very well on Sunday.”

What a strange two weeks it has been since our last game. I haven’t looked over my neighbour’s fence with as much interest since Pamela Anderson moved in next door and regularly used her trampoline, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.
