Mick McCarthy hits back at critics

Defiant manager Mick McCarthy has blasted back at the snipers after Wolves blew their derby chance.

Carlos Vela’s injury-time equaliser to cancel out Jamie O’Hara’s stunning opener was reward for Albion having virtually all of the chances in yesterday’s first Premier League Black Country derby.

Matt Jarvis fired wide from Wolves’ only other opportunity and the visitors failed to force goalkeeper Boaz Myhill into a save in the 1-1 draw, which left them bottom of the table on goal difference.

But boss McCarthy insisted they never intended to spend so long defending.

He said: “We set out to attack most weeks – we don’t set up to defend. Just because we set up 4-3-3 or 4-5-1, it’s not defensive and we use it in an attacking way.

“We dominated for maybe 60 minutes yesterday but in that domination we needed a second goal. Even though the disappointment of conceding in the last minute really hurt, it was still a point.

“If we play like that for the rest of the season I still think we’ll be fine.”

McCarthy refused to blame goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, who dropped James Morrison’s late shot for the equaliser.

The manager said: “It was a bobbly pitch and it went through a lot of legs. Wayne might feel he could have hung onto it because he’s a top goalkeeper.

“But he has been fabulous and, if it was a mistake, he will be back to his best and looking for a clean sheet this Saturday.

“We should have blocked the original shot.”

McCarthy also supported Jarvis over his missed chance.

He said: “I’m not going to condemn him, because it wasn’t an easy chance and he was terrific again.”

The Wolves boss insisted he would have settled for a point.

He said: “Would I have taken a point beforehand? Yes. Do I feel bitter about ending up with one? Yes. Do I think it’s still a good point? Yes.

“It will feel like a win for Albion but our performance was very good and we just made a mistake at the end. It’s one more point than we had beforehand and we now play Blackpool.

“If we can win we’ll be on 28 points from 28 games – back on target for a point a game.”

Why is this muppet defending Jarvis and Wayne when it is not them that most people are complaining about IT IS YOUR TACTICS !

WHY take off Milijas who was having a good game and replace him with SEB? Surely Doyle should have been sacrificed, but maybe he is another one of your favourites who will not be taken off.

WHY take off Foley who was also holding his own and bring on Ward WHO WILL ALL KNOW IS A LIABILITY.

WHY take off Jarvis who gives us an opportunity to use when we are up against it with his pace and bring on Craddock who has not played since last year!

CRAZY decisions by an inept manager at this level.

Please play Hammill against Blackpool and drop te dead donkey Henry!

Both teams would have taken a point before the game and it was an inevitable draw.

I really hope Mick goes for it over the home stretch. 4-4-2, creative midfielders and high energy.

4-5-1 with a holding midfielder will mean we are subjected to similar performances to that of yesterday, with few chances either end and it’ll be squeaky bums aplenty.

Mick McCarthy is Wolves best Manager for 30 years.

Yes, he opens his mouth before engaging his brain sometimes.

Yes, he can be a little bit naive tactically.

And yes, his record as a Premiership Manager isn’t great but we are still in there, we’ve beaten Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City and taken a well earned point from our bitterest rivals.

If (and I mean IF) we get relegated then we are in a stronger position than the last time under Dave Jones. We’ll bounce straight back, stronger for another years development under Mick’s stewardship.

I’m not part of the anti Mick mob, but I do question his substitutions yesterday. Was bringing on Seb supposed to force them to pull Olsson back, cos it didn’t work. Taking Foley off seemed ridiculous unless he was injured. Craddock coming on just encouraged Albion on to us and resulted in the equaliser. No question.

Jarvis misses have now cost us three points. One at Bolton and two yesterday.
That said, it’s an away point in a must-not-lose match. Now we have a must-win match against Blackpool. Four points ? I’d have taken that !

I agree with him on Hennessey he has been brilliant recently and like many of the games we have conceded in, so many players should have stopped the attack.

However I don’t agree with the other things, he sets the team up and chooses the tactics, leaves Doyle on his own and dosen’t play strikers.

He is to blame along with Morgan who stands by him, and that’s why we are bottom of the league

Watched the game from Aust. and was gutted by the result. I’m probably not the best qualified person to comment as I don’t see as many games as I’d like but Karl Henry in possession is a liability at best. Virtually clueless in attacking play, he places an extra burden on the likes of O’Hara and Millijas going forward to be creative. For me the pivotal moment in the match that instigated the momentum swing, was when Henry tried to be too clever on the ball early in the second half, was dipossessed, and presented Brom with an attacking play. We seem to amass more points when he is injured or suspended. A change required!

I think Mick had a mad moment yesterday with the substitutions. We have seen out tough one goal leads against Bham, Chelsea, Liverpool and Utd, all better than Albion.

The difference yesterday was Mick taking off Milijas and Foley who had played in the final stages of all those games. They are clever players able to keep possession and stop the opposition building up a head of steam which is what Albion did yesterday.

I just hope he is made to look back at what he has been doing successfully and compare to yesterday’s cock-up.

Blaming individual players is pointless even if recent errors (Zubar, Hennessey)are hard to explain. The high total of goals conceded in injury time is the most damaging issue and the clear culprit is MM. Wolves defensive mindset is amplified late on and they defend too deep. I agree with Flying Winger about MM but have hopes that someone with Morgan’s qualities will see the light!

Can’t belive it once again we throw away points in the last minute or in injury time. These players need a psychologist to sort their heads when it come to back to the wall defending. A point is a decent result away at WBA. However, in the context of our turgid season so far it wasn’t enough in my opinion. Almost every game is now a must win for us and that heaps a pile of pressure on the team. If we can’t beat b’pool at home, I can’t see how we will stay up.

Mick has not been good enough this season tactically and doesn’t appear to learn from his mistakes. We are bottom of the league! There is no argument to say we’ve been unlucky etc. The wins against the top teams have papered over the cracks. I’d swap all those points if it had meant we’d beaten teams in the bottom half, Wigan, West Ham etc.

We don’t score enough, don’t create enough, concede too many yet the same personnel keep their place and we never try anything new despite not having won a back to back game all season.

I don’t think Mick is good enough at this level and he isn’t the right manager to take us forward. I think it’s disgraceful how Morgan and Moxey are seemingly not bothered about relegation and don’t consider it to be a disaster. They take the fans support for granted.

MM says we dominated for 60 minutes but the fact is we put precious little pressure on Albion’s goal.Henessey was the busier of the two keepers throughout and is playing well. Our goal threat is virtually non-existent in the games we need to win. However, yet again, we contrived to give up a last minute goal with some horrendous defending. Its hard to see how “we will be fine” if we continue to repeat these performances.

Henry lost the ball so many times as ever that it adds too much pressure on others around him, Milijas (who I rate highly) had by his standards a quiet game and Jarvis looked jaded and should have converted such an easy opportunity, with his skill and at this level these wasteful chances cost us dearly !.Our Subs were shocking and terrible choices indeed. On the only plus side, Stunning goal by O’Hara and he is ovbiously very keen to obtain a permanant place at Wolves next season. Mick once again In my opinion was totally defensive, and should have played Fletch. Doyle is not the answer for all he is superb his lack of goals and a partner is plainly obvious to all but Mick. We can all say “he holds the ball up well” but who for ???…theres nobody up there with him, so alas it goes back to midfield and if thats Henry, back to Hennessey. I have no problem with a 4-5-1 formation but you cannot use it unless you have two proper wingers supporting the centre forward – Foley is not a winger! Also we must use Fletcher or SEB against Blackpool and quite a few other games to get at least 4 wins out of the remaining 11 games!

O’Hara also gave Henry a lesson on how to play in midfield at this level. A different gravy, he might be the key to staying up.

I am not part of the anti MM brigade, he bought stability and promotion BUT his record speaks for itself. Awful decision making in this game cost us two points.
In first half lots of quality crosses going into Albion box, but absolutley no one there for us. We needed EB or Fletch then.
Then takes Ned of who was one of our best and most creative players to bring on EB by which time the crosses had dried up.
Maybe Wayne was a bit wobbly at time, but made several top drawer saves that kept us in play. No blame on him imo.
I would have liked to see Hammil start or in the game, create some pressure on the right.

MM is just to stubborn, Henry was very poor, was either giving the ball away or passing back or sideways. Only thing he hit forward was speculative lobs which again gave the ball away.

Anyone else really worry about our coaching, how often have we seen creative players arrive and soon just blend into Micks run your socks off put in a shift style. How long before OHara and Hammill lose their cutting edge. You have got to realise that by not taking points off the lower teams, this only increases their point tally against us, therefore if we had lost to all the top clubs instead of winning, and beat all the ones around us we would be in the middle to top half of the table by now, as their point tally would be much lower beccause of this. As for yesterdays match I think any sane supporter saw that we did not have any efforts on target and unfortunately Wayne was far too busy throughout the match compared to Myhill, It’s ok Mick saying we had 60 mins of the match but it only takes a few seconds to score and in truth they could have had a hatful if it wasn’t for last minute blocks, superb saves from Wayne and they having forwards that can’t hit a cows bum with a banjo. We need to turn in performances against the lower opposition and not just against the likes of Man poo and Chelski etc.

However well you set the team up, you cant legislate for individual errors. So many games this season have been lost or drawn due to various players committing stupid acts some you wouldnt see in a Sunday League game. This begs the question as to “are they of sufficient quality for the Premier League”Also the manager seems to be making similar mistakes either with his selection, tactics and substitutions.Hence we are bottom of the League. One bright spot is the signings of O’Hara and Hammill.I understand that a fee has already been agreed with Spurs for when the loan period ends. The only question is will he still want to come to us if we go down.As far as Doyle not scoring we must look at the quality of service to him.I feel that we should pack the midfield with ball players get a goalscorer up front with Doyle and attack.

Have to laugh at some of the comments you people make on here. If Hennessey hadn’t have spilt the ball we would have won and you would all be saying how great we are and that we are staying up! How fickle we are!

I am incredibly frustrated too that we conceded again in injury time (especially to WBA) but if we beat Blackpool I still think we have a great chance when comparing our fixtures to the likes of WBA.

As for the formation, we are rubbish in a 442 as O’Hara would be restricted in his freedom and we need the extra man in there to compete. Its not pretty, 4-5-1 worked last season and generally makes us more solid. Thus, who cares if we don’t flatter as long as we get results. As long as we play 2 attacking wingers (either Hammill or Hunt if fit with Jarvo) and milijas and o’hara we have plenty to concern the opposition imo.

take on the situation. In our favour, we didn’t lose on Sunday and we do know that our relegation rivals have a much stickier run in than we have. On the negative side, we may have lesser sides to play, but we haven’t covered ourselves in glory playing against those sort of teams to date. It really is time to step up to the plate.

During the first half our defence never got out of first gear , yet contained wolves to the extent they only had one shot on target, that was Ohara’s well taken goal. Don’t blame Mick, he was forced to make changes, he could see ALBION pressing more and more especially when Olsson foraged forward, we could handle your forwards without him. Yes, in the end it was a lucky, lucky point for wolves. Going to beat Blackpool, eh?.

Once again we are let down by MM substitutions
no one can ever work out why he always brings on WARD who is out of his depth. FOLEY who has the ability to control the ball and pass it forward to another wolves player unlike HENRY who is also out of his depth.
Example when we are defending HENRY booted the ball up field and there are no wolves players. So guess what the ball came streight back!!! why didn’t he kick it out and at leased they would be able to reform.
MM will never be replaced and he will also never explain why he plays WARD and HENRY. No wonder FLETCHER looks brassed off.
PS When did we last score a goal from open play? ie by passing the ball to each other.

To be honest WBA got a point at home against the team bottom of the table and a direct threat. They did the same against West Ham. 6 vital points and they got 2.

For wolves, a draw was an ok result. Not ideal losing in that manor but win Saturday and we will be well on the way to getting out of it.

I do feel we were ineffective up front however. Doyle couldnt get the ball in the right areas hence not producing an effort on target. Jarvis should have made it 2 and the games up but couldnt see where we would score a second from bar that lack of finishing quality.

I didnt like the re-organising the defence in the last minute and wouldnt have made that change. Higher up the field is the place to make changes in that time of match.

Overall, gutted, but a good point and as much as West Brom may feel like its a win, it really was a far worse result for them than it was for us. They say they want 4 wins……… who from?? Played us and West Ham and drew both………..

We have on the other hand, Blackpool, Fulham, Everton, West Brom, Blackburn and Tottenham at home. I can see us climbing out, and thats not including some away draws which I think we will pick up. KEEP THE FAITH!! Its not over. Blake needs to start instead of Doyle and get Hammill back in the team.

I listened to the game on the radio, watched MOD and Sky sports today. The manager seems unable to grasp a few fundamentals and the facts speak for themselves. Its not about how much possession you have or how much control of the game you have, its about the quality of play in those periods. If Wolves play like that for the rest of the season they wont score many goals and relegation will happen. The manager is far too defensive and with a team with too many individuals with not enough talent to pass and go,his teams will always be chasing the game.In sundays game the stats show that apart from goals WBA had the upper hand. The managers teams, tactics and substitutions make hard work of getting the required results. Please Mr Manager move away from the touchline watch the game higher up and you will see things more clearly.

point away from home in the PL cant be sniffed at, TBH on the second half WBA were unlucky not to score a few more – disappointing to concede after 90, again – but happy enough with a 1-1, especially if we can beat Blackpool (which on current for we should).
agree about the sub’s, ironic really that he throws an extra CB on to try and defend a 1-0 and they score, by all means run the clock down a little, get some fresh legs on and maybe an extra body in midfield (perhaps an extra mid could have got close to the guys shot that led to the winner) but the extra defender invited them on and upset the defensive equilibrium.
as for the final points requirement the ‘magic number’ for safety is known to be 40, just over a point a game. 40 points I believe will be enough quite easily, 38 or 39 will probably just do it although ideally like to do it with a game spare it’ll be so tense coming down to final game.
must admit my major worry as to whether we can accrue the requisite number is our goal scoring prowess. we’re not scoring enough, awful miss by Jarvis who along with Doyle and Henry doesnt score enough if ever in Karls case. hopefully Hara,Mili and Hammill/Hunt can get a few before the end of the season but theyre not going to get enough to finish the job. we need a more prolific final 3rd of the season from Doyle or maybe a different striker/partner for Doyle in the starting XI.

If we play (the second half) like that against better teams than Albion, we will get murdered, its as simple as that. We can’t seem to score from open play even if our lives depended on it. Fletcher (even though he hasn’t played many games for us, as an out and out striker) must be the biggest waste of money we have even had (if he isn’t then why isn’t he playing?)Doyle for all his marvellous work rate still can’t score to save his life, and Jarvis (ever since he didn’t make the England squad a couple of months ago) has started to turn into a 60 minute player, who then becomes annonymous for the last 30 minutes, he also needs to learn how to keep his composure when presented with goal scoring chances. Had he scored to make it 2 – 0 from the gilt edged chance he had, then I reckon the game would have been over. I don’t blame Hennessey for their goal, we sat back and invited pressure and it was only sheer luck and bad finishing by them that they hadn’t equalised earlier.

First of all, at least try to speak in English, man, rather than an ugly mixture of txt spk and the mangled grammar of the terminally ignorant, it’s just undermining any argument you may have and makes the rest of us look stupid by assocation. The rest of the country thinks we’re all a bunch of in-bred thickos, so when we post on a public forum, let’s not give them the ammunition, eh chaps?

38 points gives us a point a game. At the moment a point a game would put us on 27 points which would position us – gasp! – in 19th place and smack bang in the relegation places. To explain once again for the cheap seats, the weird results like our defeating the Big Five Minus Arsenal has meant that the league is uncommonly condensed this season, which means that it will be won by a team with a comparatively low points total, and the teams at the bottom will have comparatively high totals – indeed, there are only two teams currently scoring less than a point a game, last season there were five with Wolves just scraping it on the button. You think 38 is enough, great, I’m happy for you. But I paid attention during maths class and can spot a trend when I see one. Of course, if I’m wrong I’ll come on here and apologise cringingly, but I’ll be happy to because Wolves will have stayed up. But if I’m right – and I will be – then fully expect me to be a massive pain in the backside about it for weeks. You’ll need therapy by the time I’m through with you.

‘McCarthy Hits Back At His Critics’ ??!! This is the man who, a few weeks ago, called his critics Numpties and did not read or listen to criticism.

Like it or not, the bucks stops firmly at his door. It has been said that he is a good honest man, which may or may not be the case, he is however delusional and incompetent. To that extent full of BS

It beggars belief that if we stay up it will more of the same rubbish, if relegated the belief that he is the right man to get us back up, again offers more of the same nonsense.

Whilst hanging on by our teeth in the PL the board should have moved heaven and earth to keep us there, instead they have swallowed the BS and like the Manager have failed miserably. They had ample opportunity earlier to bite the bullet before it became to late.

I worked with a similar manager some years ago, every man and his dog were telling him for months to buy a goalkeeper, including the directors but just like MM with Ward and Henry he ignored all the advice. He let in 5 at Derby on Easter Saturday, the next game a couple of days later being here at Wolves. We were 3 up at half time. By full time we sulked away loosing 5-3, our keeper was in another world in the second half and those ten goals resulted in us being relegated.

These people get themselves entrenched in the position believing they know it all, the plain truth is, they don’t. Seen it all before, the lack of intelligent planning, spending or the lack of it and shrewd tactics leaves the majority of us wondering how in hell do they keep there jobs.

I really think he should stop patronising us fans/his wage payers and come out saying something with meaning, a bit of truth for once.

When was the last time he said ‘ xxxxx screwed up and I’ve given him a right taytering, he won’t do it again’?

I don’t ever expect him to come out and say ‘I’m totally out of my depth and at any other club I’d be out of a job a long time ago’ but a bit of humility would go a long way instead of wafer thin see through triesome spin spin spin spin.

most of the sides currently occupying the relegation spots and those who without doubt will be battling it out with those three currently have fairly high points totals because Wolves apart they all have to play 4,5 even 6 matches V top 6 opponent. all fair and good spotting a trend but this is football, especially toward the end of the season the upsets against teams going for title or chams/league etc will get less. at one point it was looking like an unusually high tally would be required, I believe that 18th final relegation spot’ll finish on around 36,37 possibly 38 – so 38,39 will just do it 40 will fly it.
on another point can anyone remember Mick throwing on a extra CB to defend a lead the way he did at the Hawthorns, can’t remember him doing it before during his time at Wolves. I know it’s harsh conceding 90+ min goals especially V the tescoheads but it’s become such a formality this season it’s pretty easy to be quite blasé about it now (terrible eh?), watching the highlights just knew they’d get one and it was fully deserved too. makes me wonder if any side has ever conceded so many goals after say the 85th minute mark as we have this term.

    MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

So muppet hits back at critics.

A manager who buys players and does not use them.

pays £6.5 mill for a laughingly called “striker” who couldn’t score if he was the only one on the pitch

Tells us at the start of the season that he had the players to keep us up and it was job done and mission accomplished.

Tells us that his team are marvellous in effort and commitment but does not apparently notice that they are bottom of the table.

Still expects fans to turn out every week to pay his bunch of failures their excessive wages and watch them produce a standard of football that would disgrace a pub league

And he is critical of US!!

Substitutions did us in. Craddock was not needed at the end, and it only allowed the referee to add another minute. We were goingvto hang on at that point. Rarely do I condemn his aims or overall tactics; it’s the players selection and the time in the match he chooses to change formations and substitute players, respectively, that concern me.

Come on, Mick, you can improve your game as well! I am not one of these Negative Ninnies, but you should adjust and aim higher for yourself to better help your team!

    Who R wba??????????????

l00.Billy. I have been saying that about Doyle for months now. Headless chicken comes to mind. However our nPower Championship Manager keeps telling us that he puts a “shift in” whatever that means. Has anyone else heard any other manager use that term? Answers on a postage stamp please.
