Debate over Wolves’ United winner
Tuesday 8th February 2011, 2:45PM GMT.
Wolves may be contacted by the Premier League’s Dubious Goals Panel to settle the debate as to who scored the winner against Manchester United.
Kevin Doyle, who claimed the ball went in off his cheek after Nenad Milijas’ free kick struck George Elokobi, has contacted club officials to re-affirm his claims after reading reports of his team-mate trying to claim the second goal in the 2-1 win.
Doyle joked: “George needs to wind his neck in. It’s my goal and I’m getting back in touch to set the record straight. I definitely touched it, 100 per cent – it came off the side of my head.
“George is taking advantage of me being out of the country and trying to claim it while I’m not around to defend my corner.
“I actually got a touch to it while being rugby-tackled by George at the same time, which is quite an achievement.
“I’d put it away and started celebrating and all of a sudden George was celebrating next to me and I was like ‘what’s going on here?’
“I think he maybe got a bit carried away by his celebration of the first goal.”
As a striker, Doyle was naturally keen to hang onto his sixth goal of the season.
He worked hard for it too, after departing the scene with a fat lip and bloody nose after being on the end of a stray elbow from United defender Chris Smalling.
The timing wasn’t great, given he had to pose for pictures afterwards with some of his former teachers from Dublin who were over for the game, and then on Sunday night picked up two top awards for his international exploits with the Republic of Ireland.
Doyle said: “I hope the photoshop was working well! Fortunately the lip has gone down a bit now, and, on a serious note, I was delighted with the awards.”
As regards the goal, Elokobi, whose equaliser was his first in the League for Wolves, isn’t for turning.
He said: “It’s my goal, definitely. Look at the TV pictures – it’s there for all to see!
“We’ll have to let the Premier League decide.”
Wolves match analyst James Lovell is undecided after watching replays of the goal.
He said: “I’ve had a good look at the goal from the angles that we have on camera.
“From what I’ve seen it’s very hard to give a decision either way, so I think I’ll leave that job to someone else.”
