Wolves 0 Stoke 1

Sunday 30th January 2011, 3:08PM GMT.

Robert Huth scores the winner for Stoke.
Robert Huth scores the winner for Stoke.

Wolves’ FA Cup hopes were ended again at the fourth round stage as Robert Huth’s 81st minute header settled an evenly contested Staffordshire derby at a sparse Molineux.

Watched by new loan Wolves signing Jamie O’Hara in a crowd of just 11,967, defender Huth headed home unmarked but there was late drama as Nenad Milijas’s penalty was saved by keeper Thomas Sorensen in injury-time after he was fouled.

Earlier, Steven Fletcher headed against the post but Wolves, who fielded a virtual full strength line-up and lost Stephen Hunt to an early injury, were again below par as they crashed to their third successive defeat and went out at this stage for the second time in three seasons.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy made only two changes to the side beaten 3-0 by Liverpool eight days ago as he went for a morale-boosting win.

In goal, Marcus Hahnemann replaced Wayne Hennessey, while George Elokobi returned from suspension for Kevin Doyle, who has been ill.

That meant Stephen Ward reverted to a striking role with Elokobi at left-back.

There was little to cheer Wolves fans early on in a lacklustre start from the home side.

Making his full debut, on-loan Villa striker John Carew twice went close to a breakthrough.

First the giant Norwegian brought a full length diving save from Hahnemann when his point-blank effort was turned around the post.

Later, Carew brushed off Christophe Berra but produced a poor shot which was blocked by Hahnemann.

In between, Wolves weren’t helped by the departure of Stephen Hunt after just 10 minutes, the Ireland winger limping off with what appeared to be a calf injury to be replaced by Dave Edwards.

Ward tried to lift the gloom when he dispossessed Abdoulaye Faye and raced towards goal but with the angle getting tighter, his shot was smothered by keeper Thomas Sorensen, one of six changes for the visitors.

Wolves gradually worked their way into the game and after Salif Diao was booked for a late tackle on Nenad Milijas, Steven Fletcher headed against the base of the post from Ward’s driven cross to the far post.

Richard Stearman suffered a heavy blow to the face when he appeared to catch the back of Carew’s head, but he recovered as Wolves closed the half under pressure, Rory Delap, finishing poorly after intercepting an awful pass out to Ronald Zubar before Carew headed narrowly wide from a corner.

Stoke started the second half with Glenn Whelan – subject of an enquiry from Wolves earlier this month – on for Diao, who was in danger of being sent off for his robust tackling.

The unsavoury side of Stoke was shown again with a booking for Jonathan Walters for a late tackle on Milijas, who had been the main target for much of the physical attention, and what appeared to be an elbow from Robert Huth on Berra as they went for Stearman’s long ball, which left the Wolves man grounded for several seconds.

Referee Mike Jones however, took no action.

Attempting to shake things up, McCarthy switched to a 4-2-3-1 formation which saw Karl Henry and Milijas anchoring the midfield, Ward pushed out to the right and Edwards allowed the chance to break forward to support Fletcher as the lone frontman.

And Edwards, who was having a busy game, had a chance snatched away from him when the ball wouldn’t come down quickly enough for him near the penalty spot before Fletcher was flagged offside as he tried to bundle home the follow-up.

Wolves were enjoying a better spell and Karl Henry volleyed narrowly wide and over from 25 yards as the ball came out of the air.

But Ward missed the opportunity to cap it with a goal with a poor downward header from Matt Jarvis’s cross.

Zubar was booked for catching Rory Delap late before Stoke hit back.

After Whelan’s fierce drive was beaten away by Hahnemann, the veteran keeper tipped Matthew Etherington’s angled drive wide.

Wolves introduced Ebanks-Blake for Fletcher 15 minutes from time.

But it was Stoke who were in the ascendancy as Huth stole in unmarked to head home unmarked from six yards from Etherington’s byline free kick.

Huth almost did the same again six minutes after the goal but this time his header went wide from Etherington’s corner.

Then came the penalty after Milijas went down from what appeared to be a challenge from the grounded Huth.

But the Serb’s shot was weak and poor to Sorensen’s left, allowing the former Villa keeper the chance to make a fine save.

This not dropping/resting Ward is becoming a joke,…Elokobi back a left back so Ward plays upfront!,..why not play Vokes?…hes been good enough to be on the bench the last 2 games,.. and all the ones saying Henry wont get a game now we have O’Hara better get real,..it will be Milijas who looses out or we will revert to a 5 man midfield to accomadate him as like Ward, Henry is here to stay as he is one of MM’s favourite sons,… one other point, the attendance is low because our greedy club like the round before cant even reduce prices to a sensible level to even tempt fans, but there again £25 at tunstiles probably sounds cheap to Moneybags Moxey.

MM – sorry, but just go!! Another poor performance, lacking in quality and leadership (both on and off the field). The awful penalty summed it all up – pathetic! The ‘happy clappers’ will argue that now we will be able to concentrate on the league. Oh yes, more bitter disappointment to come. The abject signings that we have made will come in handy in the Championship next season – early bird my backside. The 3 M’s ought to be ashamed of themselves, but will probably blame it on poor refereeing, bad luck, an awful pitch, etc… They just need to look honestly into a mirror and point at the reflection. Sadly, they haven’t the guts to do that!! We desperately need a quality Premiership manager appointed – and soon. No chance! How sad!

What on earth is going on- sadly the stats don’t lie. This Wolves squad is not good enough at whatever level/competition we play in at the moment.
I would have thought we would have chosen an attacking side today, with nothing to lose, except some pride, yet we play awful infront of some true Wolves die hards which I feel have been cheated anyway- you call what we put out entertainment??

Why not try some of the youngsters ? Why not try some of the new players? why play the same old players who we have seen we in week out under perform.. actually this is probably not fair on the players as I think they are performing at their best but sadly their best comes up short at the level we are playing at, at the moment.. Bring on the Championship as that is their true level and they will probably do alright. Problem is its all too late in my opinion to change things now particualrly as MM has his favourites which we know are not up to it…

I’m not expecting to see another match worthy of the admission fee on that farmer’s field this season (not that I was holding out much hope in the first place!). Henry, Ward, Elokobi, Fletcher must go – they’re not even Championship quality. Give the kids a chance -and play people in the positions they were signed for! As some will know I regularly support the management and even the CEO on here
    BUT
I have never cared so little when we missed a last minute penalty – everything about the game was half hearted.
e.g. ticket prices were reduced and yet for a category B game it is £24 in the Southbank but today the ‘reduced price’ was £25 for non-STHs.
The Southbank paid anyway but the rest of the ground stayed at home (they may be the ones with sense).
The team was ‘full strength(ish)’ but didn’t play like they really cared.
The manager said before the game that ‘the last thing we want is a draw’ but we have a player blatantly diving for a penalty in the last minute – then missing then pen which presumably pleased the manager?
I will seriously think about whether I will go to another Cup game in the future (and I went to Donny away this year)

I’m getting fed up saying the same old thing. MM’s selection, tactics and substitutions are woeful.
He did a great job getting us promoted and keeping us up last year but are we really better this season. No is the answer. The money he spent in the summer seems to have been wasted: Van Damme – gone home, Fletcher – don’t see a Premiership CF, Hunt – has performed poorly, his crossing is abysmal. Now Jarvis seems to have gone off the boil.

We needed a quality LB, and at least one central defender before the season started. Neither of which we’ve bought.

I think the ambition in the changing room and the board is Championship material.

If we do not pick up 3 points from either the Bolton or MU game we are finished.

One day to go in the transfer window and the accountants will be pleased that Wolves brought in more money than they spent this January. It’s time that Wolves fans called in the Trading Standards because they are constantly being ripped off. If I spent money on a Premier league Sky package and was only shown Conference league football then I would win a court case hands down. That is exactly what the 3M’s are selling true Wolves fans. There are only 24 hours left, too late to sack Mick the Magician, too late to buy any decent players. I suggest that a new stadium should be constructed at the Compton training ground with a capacity of 10,000 and call it the “3M’s Pothole”, sell Molineux and donate the money to the homeless and needy. As a Wolves supporter for more than 40 years I have never been more disgusted than by the current management. “1M” sod off to Liverpool, “2M” take a course in business development and “3M” just SOD OFF with your clipboard. How any TRUE FAN can still back the THREE KINGS with their gold plated promises beggars belief.

I was looking at buying a box next season but I am sick of the club taking advantage of loyal fans. Between my family we have 4 season tickets and 4 away season tickets.

Ringing up the rip off phone line costs to start off- then on top of that is the £1.50 per ticket rip off booking fee.

When you get in the ground there is overpriced food and drink.

We are now an unambitious club who is going down and MM is taking us there. Moxey if you want to see these sort of crowds every week then keep on in these same business methods.

Fans have had enough of being ripped off and what with fuel costs and food and energy costs rising I am having to prioritise where I spend my monies.

I see us going down at the end of the season, Doyle, Fletcher and Jarvis being sold.We have already bought their replacments in Hammill and Griffiths.

For goodness sake even a blind man with a wooden leg can see that the team needs some fresh legs and fresh ideas. Most of that team will be knackered for Wednesday. Why when Geoffrey has shown some spark and willingness to shoot has he been dropped. We have no pace and no energy. How can you take fletcher off and leave Ward on. There is a serious sense of complacency from the 3M’s. O’Hara will be ok if he is fit but without a defender I feel it is too little too late. Henry…. oh don’t get me started.

    Wolves lose

And all the knobs on here blame Henry & Ward as per usual, clueless.

Zubar, Berra, Jarvis(again) & Fletcher were poor today, especially Zubar whose passing, discipline & positional play were very poor & he is starting to look a liability.

Today Jarvis spent far too long out of the game, especially first half & in the 2nd half there was too little end product from his play, he seems low on confidence as does Fletcher & Berra looks like he is running on quick sand, though the pitch looks like it’s been grown on quick sand, million quid my arse!!!

Good news with us getting O’Hara but we need a win desparately, starting on Wednesday & a couple of defenders by this time tomorrow wouldn’t go a miss!!!

Thos of you who are moaning about Ward obviously aint got a clue what you are on about as he had a decent game today although usually i wouldnt put him in my starting 11, and elokobi was decent to. What we lacked today was finishing and it didnt help that we had a linesman who didnt know what an offside was, every through ball we had played got flagged and the majority wasnt offside!!!! personally i would say our loss today is down to them 2 facts, no one to put the ball away and a below par linesman!!

What are the odds that we actually bring in some quality in to our defence before tomorrows deadline?
I’ve been accused of being a happy clapper in the past, but you really can’t miss the fact that either the team are really missing a of quality to stay in the PL or the players are as good as Mick says but we have a bad problem in the quality of our coaching staff (Mick included)…
I know Mick thinks his job is safe, but if enough fans start getting disgruntled then the board may finally listen!
I’m saying this because I’ve just got frustrated with our transfer dealings in the last 2 seasons… Some try hards and some no hopers at a cost of near 40 million… Not a good enough record!

It is however the answer to the current debacle, STAY AWAY, DEMONSTRATE and DO NOT PART WITH ONE PENNY OF YOUR HARD EARNED CASH.

As a indication of my feelings, the hurt and suffering I feel is far worse than my Chemo & Radiotherapy, which I have endured since April last year. In many ways the attendance/game typified everything wrong with this club.We have got a shocking defence ,who do we get in during the window? ,a midfielder and 2 forwards. No reduction in admission prices, resulting in a diabolical attendance. I look at the other clubs around us and see who they buying and wonder what is going on at our club. Is Morgan refusing to give MM any more money or does the manager think we are good enough to stay up with this team? I know Sir Jack had his faults but at least he cared passionately about the club.

Good God, how much MORE bloody dross do the Gold-booded masses have to endure before Mad Mick and Co. finally disappear over the horizon?

After the game, I had a couple of pints then went home and slapped my copy of ‘ROLLERBALL’ into the DVD player to chill out with. The good news was that I saw more action in that 110 minutes of a classic film than I have done all season. The bad news was that I didn’t particularly care about being dumped out of the cherished FA Cup just hours earlier. Why? Because I’m feeling deep apathy and that’s the worrying thing, people. Apathy is the real killer at a football club, as a sub-12,000 crowd testifies. Apathy because NOBODY AT MOLINEUX IS LISTENING TO US FANS and, worse still, NOBODY CARES.

How laughable it is that the Happy Clapper Brigade aren’t out in force today. They’re conspicuous by their absence. Why’s that, I wonder? Are even THEY finally waking up from their self-imposed coma and smelling the coffee? If so, welcome to the real world of Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, 2011-style; a club that’s wearing it’s pants back to front…and inside out, too.

If being a ‘Happy Clapper’ means cheering on your team for 90 minutes, irrespective of the team picked, thereby offering unqualified support, FINE…you’re a fan and I endorse your commitment because I’m no different myself.

If, however, being a ‘Happy Clapper’ means never questioning ANYTHING that goes on at Wolves (either on or off the pitch) simply because “Mick got us promoted, therefore he’s God and we should be eternally grateful”….well, you’re an absolute fool in my book.

Perhaps the HC Brigade would do well to ask themselves which shoe fits before criticising those who are just as passionate about Wolves but wish to express their frustrations via these pages. Justified frustrations at that, too. Still, I daresay there’s somebody out there who, even now will be content to ‘Trust In Mick’, despite there being NOTHING to recommend him as a bone fide Premier League Manager. Each to their own, though.

Congratulations, Wolves, on completely messing up our FA Cup run together with a golden Premier League opportunity. I thought Sir Jack made a big mistake in not backing Dave Jones financially following promotion a few years ago. However, Morgan and Moxey have made an even bigger cock-up in retaining McCarthy’s services whilst simultaneously parting fans from their hard-earned dosh with unscrupulous pricing policies. Sorry, but everything stinks at Molineux right now, as much as it pains me to say it.

Wolves, if losing your heart and soul -and respect from your diehard fanbase- is the price we’re paying for for being a Premier League football club, then maybe we’d all be better off in the Championship. At least I recognised my club back then. Today’s Wolves is a closed shop of a club that couldn’t give a fig for its long-suffering fans; couldn’t care less about entertainment or value for money…and couldn’t recognise ABJECT FAILURE by its Manager and coaching staff if it hit them in the face.

The Molineux hierarchy don’t care so, tell me: WHY SHOULD WE?

Talk of Torres for 50 million on deadline day but no one moving in for something really special, a player who is equally as good at left back as he is as a right sided striker. How can such a player be ignored ?

Looking at yesterdays performance can anyone honestly believe that Zubar, Berra, Hunt, Milias or Fletcher would attract bids of even half what MM paid for them or that anyone would take Henry, Elokobi or Mr Versatile himself Stephen ward off us even if given away with their 4 year contracts.

When Mr. Morgan eventually sees what everyone can see and finally replaces MM we will be left with one hell of a mess to sort out. The Stoke game was there to be won, they were nothing special but keeping SEB on the bench until the final minutes and then taking off the natural striker to accommodate him instead of replacing Ward was typical of the man. Thankfully his latest joke to bring sick note Woodgate in backfired as we all the know the script, injured in his first training session.

No left back worthy of the title at the club in 4 years, useless buys at centre back, suffering with injuries but no real effort to rectify a weak area-all obvious to the fans but not MM. January comes and goes with nothing done to improve things. Let us hope that its MM’s last January at the club and that we finally put this sorry chapter in our history behind us.

89- Any takers? Yes, me. Admittedly, I didn’t see every Fourth Division game in our inaugural season (due to periods of unemployment during difficult economic times), but I still attended plenty of games. In fact, my young kids made their very first Molineux visits during those dark days. I had them sat on my shoulders in the old South Bank as the roof leaked rain and Molineux rotted into the biggest dump in football (well, very nearly!).

Introducing my kids to my beloved club at Division 4 level aint exactly what I had in mind when they were babies because, like Maltawolves, I was used to bigger and better things. Still, a Wolf’s always a Wolf.

Incidentally, those kids of mine are now adult season ticket holders, and have been for many years. So, I’ve passed on the family Gold & Black legacy -just like thousands of other dads have- thus doing my little bit to help ensure Wolves’ future fanbase.

Mick is not immune to criticism (despite what he may think) nor are Moxey, Morgan or anyone else associated wth WWFC. That’s because the fans will be there long after the Three M’s are gone. Unlike US, they don’t love the club -to them, it’s just a job that they get VERY WELL PAID to do. Anyone would think they’re doing their work on a charity basis judging by some of the gushing plaudits they’ve received from blinkered fans that are still simperingly grateful for our promotion. Still, each to their own, I say, because we all have an opinion, much as I disagree at times.

You would think that any one of the three M’s would explain exactly what they have in mind. Last season was expected to be very hard, I thought that they would go back into the Champioship, but they survived. Every one was pleaed, most were suprised, some could not believe it.

Did any one learn from it? Certainly not Henry or Berra, Keogh went but he was no worse than any one else. His luck was that many suppoters did take to him. I believe that EBlake has learned, perhaps he will never be a Carroll or a Drogba but he led the line far more effectively than Doyle, yet he is in and out. Has Jarvis improved? It is hard to judge him when posibly only Milijas is the only one who can provide the openings he needs. He is not a Giggs or a Johnson but how can he learn with the players of the caliber at the Molineux. Or even from the coaching staff

what do people want ? the worst players in the league, absolute ridiculous tactics,a manager that cannot inspire any quality players through the door, insane team selection and we are still not the bottom of the league ! come on give the lads a break.oh wardy the reason you cant get in the national side is they have a manager who knows a bit about football.
