Wolves boss looking to add another keeper
Saturday 29th January 2011, 11:33AM GMT.
Keeper Adriano Basso could win a contract with Wolves to the end of the season after Mick McCarthy admitted he wants an experienced back-up to Marcus Hahnemann.
Wayne Hennessey is now back firmly as the Molineux No.1 but the boss wants to add another keeper with Carl Ikeme out after a shoulder operation.
The 35-year-old Brazilian and former Bristol City shot-stopper played in the reserves’ 2-0 defeat against Albion this week.
“I need a more experienced third-choice keeper because Carl’s going to be out for another couple of months,” said McCarthy.
“If I had any problems with the other two then I’ve got Aarom McCarey, who’s doing brilliantly, but he’s not ready for that level of play yet.”
Meanwhile, Wolves have not given up hope of landing Jonathan Woodgate as McCarthy burns the midnight oil before Monday’s transfer deadline.
Tottenham are so keen to loan out the England international that they are prepared to pay half of his £65,000-a-week wages to allow him come to Molineux for the rest of the season.
It is understood the offer was initiated by Spurs rather than Wolves, whose European scout Ian Evans has been at the north London club’s training ground watching Woodgate as he continues his comeback from injury.
And although the 31-year-old former Real Madrid and Leeds defender rejected Wolves’ advances this week, Spurs’ keenness to see him get regular football away from White Hart Lane could yet see a change of heart.
Publicly, McCarthy admitted yesterday he does not expect any more business before the 11pm cut-off.
But behind the scenes, the Molineux chief is working feverishly to improve his squad and could yet add a midfielder to replace Michael Mancienne as well as Woodgate or another central defender, even though he is talking in the past tense about the latter.
To cover both options, he enquired after Stoke pair Abdoulaye Faye and Glenn Whelan earlier this month and both are set for a possible ‘audition’ in tomorrow’s FA Cup fourth-round tie at Molineux.
“If we end up with what we’ve got, then I’m fine about that,” said McCarthy.
“But if I could have strengthened it with a Steve Sidwell or a Jonathan Woodgate, then that’s a different ball game altogether.
“But I’m not prepared to take players just for the sake of it who are no better than the ones I’ve got.”
McCarthy admits Woodgate would have been an inspiration to Wolves.
“When you see someone like that available, we had to go for him,” added McCarthy.

What a strange two weeks it has been since our last game. I haven’t looked over my neighbour’s fence with as much interest since Pamela Anderson moved in next door and regularly used her trampoline, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.

Tell you what, I’m going to wait until the dust settles on this transfer window before I get excited, one way or another. Good luck against Stoke. UTW.

Blues sign Martins, Davies and Bentley……… Wolves sign a kid fir the future and another winger.
Seems to me we are planning for life in the division below. I’m not moaning just thecway it feels.
In the bottom 3 all season and little improvement in the window. A couple of great signings could make all the difference.
Still I’ll be there till the end. Come on me babies.

How about Shay Given? Saying he would move to championship today to get football. I would love to see a keeper like him
at wolves. Long shot I know but would surely be better than what we have

I ,like you will still be there at the end, but I see things differently.
I don’t believe Curtis Davies is any better than what we already have and certainly not in the same class as Jonathon Woodgate. It seems it’s down to Harry now to explain to him that he aint gonna be in the Spurs 25 and he’s better off at The Mol ’til May.
Blues are desperate for a striker, but, history tells us Martins is a real gamble. Hammill may just turn out to be as good a permanent signing, (maybe better) than Bentley (loan).
The Blues board have financial issues, make no mistake.
I, like you, feel we should have done better in this window than we have, but, we know McCarthy & Moxey work behind closed doors. Let’s just wait and see before we condemn them.
Faye would be a good defensive addition too, remember Dave Jones tried to sign him ? Mick can be talking to Tony Pulis this weekend.

Ohara about to sign..Quality!

Makes absolutely no sense.
1. We already have Hennessey and Hahnemann
2. If they get injured, we have McCarey, who might be young, but cant be much worse than Basso, who’s played only a few games in the past 2 years, and without a club since he was released by City.

No.2-spot on.
Maybe the penny will eventually drop as far as the Wolves Board is concerned- if you pay peanuts at this level; you get monkeys.
Anyway, how does this guy rate as ‘experienced’?- to my knowledge, he’s never played in the Prem.
Given the ambition shown by other clubs around us (locally, and in the league) this transfer window, our own efforts do seem rather paltry by comparison.

If we keep acting like a championship club, we will end up being one. There’s not much hope coming out of molineux at the moment.
Not once have I read the paper and seen anything that will change the situation. We are at the bottom for a reason, because we have the worst defence in the division. We need more than 1 player, we need a change in attitude.

PLEASE let this rumour be true that O’Hara is coming to us..he is pure quality and very welcome to our team..I hope we dont lose out this time!! UTW!!!

Spot on Northernsoul wolf, checked her twitter account and her and O’Hara did infact leave for Wolverhampton this morning. Quality signing, hopefully he does some business for us!!

I am beginning to think the reason Wolves have not signed any one with proven Premiership experience over the last three years is essentially because our manager has none. Three seasons of clinging to virtually bottom spot, is experience true but a godawful prospect for anyone considering signing for such a manager. Signing for Wolves, that may well be another matter. Get rid of Manager. Things might change

Apparently Wolves were never after Woodgate they wanted O’Hara but Spurs want Wolves to take Woodgate too.
If we get Jamie O’Hara I will be loving it! Him, Milijas and Henry in the middle of a five man midfield with Hammill on the right and Jarvis on the left!
Lets just keep our fingers crossed on this one
To be honest, id take both !
O´Hara is class no doubht, Woodgate is class too, but only worth paying half wages due to his rusty kness.
THESE TWO PLAYERS COULD BE THE DIFFERENCE
GOOD CALL on Given to Dan 4.)
I, along with ALL Wolves fans will be gutted if we dont conclude O´HARA deal so dont tet us down PLEASE…….. NOT THIS TIME.

Word is
that Wolves & West Ham both interested in taking O´Hara out on loan with O´Hara being nudged by Harry Redknap to go Wolves cos of the BAD BLOOD between Hammers stadium bid !
And it´s Spurs who are trying to tempt Wolves into loaning Woodgate too by paying some of his wages.
Nice one Harry, you know it makes sence !
Come on Wolves, seal the deal NOW !!!!!!!!!

17. Where did you get that from? I have seen nowhere else that we did not want Woodgate. Mick McCarthy looked gutted on the Sky interview after learning that JW was not coming. He is either an actor worthy of an Oscar, or your info is incorrect. I personally hope that both Woodgate And O’ Hara both come us was.
I was reading elsewhere that a back five of Hennessey, Zubar, Stearman, Berra and Elokobi has only started five games this season, keeping three clean sheets and conceding only four goals. Two of the clean sheets were Liverpool away and Chelsea at home. The four goals were two at West Ham and two at home against Wigan. One of the two at West Ham was scored after Elokobi went off. This might be worth trying again, injuries permitting.

Moaning again tut tut
I hope we get this bloke, always played well for bristol city. Good man for backup.
And why are people comparing us to blues. Do you realy think we would sign bently and martins? Blues pay out their noses to pay their wages and there a more desirable team to play than us (just being realistic)

Lets not get carried away with o hara until its completed. Great if we do get him but i doubt we will. Very dissapointed we couldnt get wheater or davies in, would of really benefited us.
No matter what i will be there supporting wolves but with no reinforcments i feel we would of been let down.
Anyone who thinks davies is no better than berra? Have you seen him play? He was on brink of england squad before injury and part of top 6 side!!!
It annoys me that blues seem so much more adept in the transfer market than us and just nip things in the bud with ease. Why cant we? Before anyone says they are in debt, where is the proof? daily mail was just here say!! surely we are just as attractive as blues to any player. As far as this keeper signing, why nit sign a first choice keeper? Hennessey is the worst in the league in my opinion.
Why would we want Woodgate???
Not being funny like but how many time has he played over the last few years????
The guy is too injury prone for me to be showing an interest in, Mad Micks thinkin negative again!!!!
jamie o’hara is a promising addition as he seems more versatile to me and can play in a few diffenet position with comfort.
If i was gonna try and push for anyone though it’d still be Mr Keane because i can’t see him being a Tottenham player long term so com and jon the Wolves rollercoaster season and be with us once again Keano!!!

I like your 5 man midfield, that is when Henry comes into his own and those around him make up for his passing problems. However, he shines as the stopper in that formation.
Doyle may start shining again as the sole striker, rather than fighting teammates for space up front.

3) get your facts right! Bottom 3 all season? If we get o’hara that will be a great signing. Craddock will be back and that will make a big difference. Left back is the concern. Unless elokobi can sustain the performance level against Chelsea. Ward is only good as a back up forward.

3) bottom 3 all season? We were out of it a few weeks ago! O’Hara would be a class signing. Craddock can be the man at centre half but what about a left back. If big George can sustain the Chelsea level of performance fine but a bit concerned otherwise!
