Jonathan Woodgate snubs Wolves

Jonathan Woodgate has sensationally snubbed a loan move to Molineux as Wolves appeared to be back at square one in their search for a defender.

Now they could turn their attentions back to Stoke’s Abdoulaye Faye, who they enquired about at the start of the month.

Manager Mick McCarthy asked about Tottenham centre-back Woodgate earlier this week, with a view to a loan move for the rest of the season.

The 31-year-old former England international, who earns around £65,000-a-week, has been made available for a temporary move by Spurs after recovering from a career-threatening groin complaint.

But the former Leeds, Newcastle and Real Madrid centte-back declined the offer, leaving McCarthy to pursue other options before the transfer window shuts at 11pm on Monday.

Instead, Woodgate, who joined Spurs from Middlesbrough for £8million three years ago, could force his way back into Harry Redknapp’s plans after being omitted from their 25-man squad.

McCarthy said: “We made an enquiry but it hasn’t happened. If he can get back to fitness – and he’s made every effort to do that – then he’s a world class centre-half and he seems to be back to that level.

“I thought there was a chance of getting someone of that ilk and getting the best out of him for five, 10 or 15 games. But he wants to stay there to fight for his place.

“I haven’t spoken to him but that’s the message I’ve got back.”

The Wolves boss could now look at Faye again, having already enquired about both him and Stoke team-mate Glenn Whelan.

Faye, who at 32 is also out of contract in June, could be trying to impress new employers on Sunday at Molineux after being pencilled in to play in the FA Cup fourth-round tie.

Faye, named Player of the Year in 2008-09, was stripped of the captaincy at the start of the season and dropped down the pecking order behind Ryan Shawcross and Robert Huth.

Whelan, a ball-playing midfielder, would cost £2million up front plus add-ons said to total another £1million, although Wolves’ interest is thought to have cooled.

Woodgate should have jumped at the chance for regular first team football. Oh well, enjoy the bench at Spurs. We dont want someone who has that kind of ambition anyhow. He used to be a good player but he isnt playing regular so more fool him.

Anyhow, we need someone in with the right attitude first and foremost. We could get the worlds best defender but if his head and heart are not in it then theres no point.

All month the moaners have been having a winge about our lack of transfer activity, but it is now clear we have been negotiating and exploring options in all positions.

Now that some of those discussions have to come to light Wolves are accused of panic buying!!

Faye would be a good, cheap, short term signing that would give much needed time for young players like Stearman to continue their development.

I love the intro: ‘Woodgate sensationally snubbed a loan move.’
It’s about as sensational as Jordan saying she wants a new boyfriend.
Shock horror! Wolves miss out on another target in a transfer sensation!

When this disaster of a season finally trundles to its miserable, hellish conclusion, I want Morgan and Moxey to look in the mirror and say they did all they could to keep us in a league we’ve spent 20 odd years trying to get into.
Do we really care if we stay up? Spending the last 2 days of the window making idle approaches to players who would take a week of convincing to join us suggests not.
At what point did Moxey and Morgan make ‘aspiration’ a swear word at Molineux?
What happened to the comments of mid-table finishes by Morgan last year? The quote by Moxey that wage bills correlate to league positions?
And in all that time, we are making a half baked attempt to sign some crocked Spurs non-entity who would never drive through Wolverhampton on his way home, let alone play for us.
Meanwhile, I’ve just been told I need to pay my early bird money.
I can’t take much more of this season.

Jonathan Woodgate is a good player when fit but you have to go back to his Leeds days to see him get through half a season and it would take 6-7 games for him to get upto speed with the amount of time he has been out.

What about Matt Mills from Reading? Ashley Williams from Swansea? I like Boyata from Man City and he would do a good job. I think Craddock is better than Berra hands-down and as soon as he feels sharp he must come back into the side.

As if we were going to get him and then he probably end up injured very quickly. This is just publicity stunt of an attempt to sign a defender, like said we wouldn’t get anywhere close to signing that kind of player. I’m not against over signings but why we haven’t being looking at any affordable defenders so far has puzzled me. When we loose we hear the same old reasons poor defending, so why haven’t looked at players like say Jlloyd Samuel from Bolton? Heck I wouldn’t mind Lee Naylor back we haven’t really replaced him since he left and surely there’s an option of a central defender we can get whether that’s from one of the top teams in the Championship or one of our relegations rivals?

No quality, experienced player will want to play for McCarthy. MM will not tolerate anyone disagreeing with him. Straight to the bench if you do.

Experienced players have experienced the quality coaching provided by the top clubs. They will not tolerate Micks ideas. They are also aware of MMs reputation about team selection and his lack of tactical ability.

I suggest that you all forget the “experienced” players and concentrate on the up-and-coming yougsters, as that is the only type of player we can recruit, and even the best of these will not leave their top clubs to come to the 3M Wolves.

I suspect we made Woodgate some ridiculously poor offer and he told us where to go. Just like last year when we NEARLY signed oh so many players.

But, amazingly, we have bought a winger to replace Jarvis when we are relegated and striker to replace Doyle and / or Fletcher for a staggering £150k.

Come on, don’t fall for this clap trap. IF we wanted players we would go and get them. Money talks, it’s not about the size of a club or anything else. It’s all about money.

The club doesn’t have any ambition and why should it. Morgan isn’t even a fan, so his decisions are going to commercially based hence his desperation to re-build a virtually new ground. He’ll make a fortune on the hotels and retail aspects of the club.

The reality is that the Premiership is becoming like the Scottish Premiership except that we have maybe a top six instead of a top two teams that are pulling away from the rest of the pack becuase of (a) their willingness to spend vast sums on players and (b) pay exotic wages to keep them. Everyone below the top six is between average to poor in quality. This season we are being found wanting, not in terms of effort, but in terms of quality both offensively and defensively.

The one player we have bought in is not going to make a material difference to our season. It will be a lottery as to whether or not we survive. If we do stay up we will be faced with the same issues next season because the Club for whatever reason will not invest in quality experienced players in the right areas that will strengthen our standing in the League. Buying “players for the future” seems a strange policy at this stage of the season when we need immediate help? Or maybe MM has the same deal as Ian Holloway and gets a piece of the action?

However, has this club moved forward this season compared to last? No it has not.

The club is still facing a battle to avoid relegation last season and got it’s buying strategy completely wrong in the close season. We signed players from failed premiership clubs and only Hunt has made any telling impression, Fletcher looks nowhere near a 6.5mil player.

Now we are faced again looking at players in the January transfer window scrabbling for players to keep us up. Hammell and Griffiths to me are players that I see to be able to help us more if we are relagated.

This is such a critical moment in Wolves’s history, relegation will mean no ground development. Oh, and saying the pitch is a little worn has just killed any argument you try to make. You are factually wrong. It needs a complete returf in the summer for a start.
Note: Next time you try to railroad fans into your train of thought, try not to get all personal about us being ‘WBA supporters.’ It doesn’t do you any favours.

    UP THE WOLVES!

Looking forward to the next Wolves story when you can offer ‘rational dialouge’.

Hindmarch – I think the point being made was really that none of us really have any great depth of knowledge about the Wolves boardroom, or indeed what it takes to actually run a football club full stop. But that doesn’t seem to stop the more negative posters jumping off the high board at every single opportunity they get. Just a bit of balance would be nice.

Some are saying Woodgate is a damaged has been, but then in the same breath lamenting that we’re not signing the likes of Bridge & Keane! I’ve seen some moaning (on other articles) that we’re not chasing Konchesky, that will no doubt largely be because he has already played for both Fulham & Liverpool this year. As a player can only play for a maximum of 2 clubs in a season, the only club he can move to this month is Fulham !…. it’s nothing to do with a lack of “ambition” on our part.

I’d suggest it may be worth looking at the bigger picture, a little further ahead than the next few months. This club has come a long way in the last 4 or 5 years and even further in the last 25 years…… the aspiration will be to move the club forward over a long, sustained period of time, build solid foundations so generation after generation of Wolves fans can enjoy a strong and successful club, the aspiration won’t be to give you a 4 month thrill at any expense.

And I say that without any inside knowledge, but it’s the message that Morgan has given before is one of the biggest reason he is looking to develop the stadium.

Sir Billy Quiet, with the greatest respect you have not answered any of my questions.Lets deal with the FACTS.Blues are in the final of the league cup.So we sold out for one game .So what.Lets look at the season overall,I am sure you would admit that gives us a better picture. What’s London got to do with anything.Blues managed to get Bentley on loan!!.W Hennessey: 1 PLAYER for heavens sake in the last 4 seasons!!!!!!!!.Finally your comment that bottom but one in the premiership is something to be pleased with makes me think that perhaps you are only coming on here to wind everybody up!

    Sir Billy

In post 44 you declare that you are subjected to abuse for supporting the club.
Well as far as I can see, it is mainly YOU who starts the abuse, directing it to any fan who’s opinion differs to that of yourself. And constantly calling fellow wolfs A****n fans for not agreeing with you is the BIGGEST insult of all !!

For the record, paying the highest season ticket prices ever in over 30 years a season ticket holder, national rate phone call queueing, £1-50 per ticket rip off tax…sorry booking fee, over £4-00 a pint, strip changes every year, early bird BLACKMAIL CON every year…..I and others expect better and deserve better, when I feel sold short I will complain and tell it as it is.

by the way, the Liverpool game was not a sell out (check the attendance!).

I will support Wolves and the team forever, alas, I find it very difficult to support the manager and aspects of the regime.

44 – sir Billy, clearly a true fan and I applaud you in the face of the legions of Numpties who have no place at our great club!

Best advice to you mate is close this thread down and don’t come back to it, they can have a pop at me for supporting you, 3 M’s and my wonderful club but I won’t be here to listen to the usual negative bile that they throw up!

Very noticeable that they were conspicuous by their absence when we beat Liverpool and Chelsea and only come out the woodwork when we get knocked back half a step! They’ll all be there jumping on the Super Mick bandwagon at the end of the season you mark my words!!

    Up the Wolves!!!!

    Sir Billy Quiet,
(and all other rose tints), whilst I sympathize with your views I believe that you are in the minority at Wolves. We survived last season and I think we all believed that this would be a season of consolidation. I agree that we are a team without debt and are likely to survive as a business, but I can think of no other retailer or service provider who disappoints as often as Wolves have over the last 25 years and still retains such support. Your view is that everything’s fine, the majority feel betrayed and disappointed. It must be fantastic to be that easily pleased but, believe me, it isn’t the norm!

Kentish Wolf – agree with you to an extent, and don’t pretend to have any great boardroom knowledge. (although some others do, who are still to elucidate quite what we’ve been doing – apart from the bleeding obvious)
I am looking at the bigger picture and that’s what worries me.
Is it wrong to question the implications of not tighteneing our inadequate defence before the end of the season?
Is an insult worthwhile when questioning our window activity on Jan 28th, as we sit in a pretty precarious position?

Yes we’re on a great financial footing comparitve to so many others.
£60 million minimum for 2 Premiership seasons, plus parachute payments, plus a £30 million promise from Morgan, no?

It is precisely this reason that I ask if a small percentage of this sum is actually invested in a Premiership hardened player that we were actually promised 2 years ago? (rather than this last minute scrambling which smells of desperation?)

Sir Billy Quiet: So you acknowledge I now love the club? I thought you said I supported WBA?
No point going over old ground for an umpteenth time. How about a beer before the Stoke game? I’ll bring a dictionary!

Im not even going to waste my time referring to sir billy in this forum, sir billy would be ashamed of such small minded tripe. I stick by the fact that we need quality over quantity. I like the signings of hammill and griffiths and good luck to them both but what squad have we got?mick hasnt once signed a player from a team in a better position than wolves and quite frankly never will because he would upset his favourites.signing players from the championship and scotland isnt going to improve us.conference prospects, young irish players, why doesnt mick become a youth team development coach he would do a sterling job. I want to see the new developed ground full every week with wolves pushing up the prem with prem players in the starting XI,i’ll never apologise for wanting that and wont settle for championship when the former is achievable with some ambition.

Hindmarch – I have the same concerns over the defence & relegation as you on the whole. I guess where we differ, is that I just don’t believe for one second the club are sitting on mountains of unused cash for the sake of it. I think the club will have been working hard to improve our squad but will have come up against a number of obstacles, the Sidwell situation offers a little evidence of that. I don’t believe McCarthy is sitting there turning down top class players because of the players we have, but I do believe that, with it looking unlikely we’re going to sign anybody, Mick has little choice but to come out and publicly back the current squad as it stands. Yet people will use those comments to launch a huge amount of stick McCarthy’s way without having any knowledge of the conversations going on between him & the board.

It’s not all the fans fault, it would help if not every single bit of news, half news or even non-news made it’s way onto the E&S !

To be honest, I just feel that club as a whole is working very hard to be the best it can be, in very difficult circumstances, without putting ourselves in a debt spiral, no matter how small…. & I think that is the right approach to take.

Ambition, future aspirations bettering our beloved team i think you’ll find its all positive apart from not wanting any more lower league signings and start as we mean to go on with prem quality thats not short sightedness you should all me wanting this for the wolves and accepting less in my eyes is negativity in its upmost

35, Norway Wolf. Spot on. I agree. What have we seen this season to think the management have done a great job? Second to bottom says the opposite. Wasted money says the opposite. And the best point of all is that it is clear as a bell no player who has had Premiership experience would want to come and play for a manager who has had two poor seasons and one dire one before that. That doesn´t mean they wouldn´t want to wear the Gold and Black!!!

First of all I would like to see a quality centre half, a left back, a central midfielder and possibly a proven striker but it is not going to happen. We have a fairly rigid wage structure and also do not want to gamble with the club’s existence – rightly so. West Ham and Blues are in last chance saloon.
You can carry on whingeing for as much as you like and the management team is not going to change. Put up or shut up!

No Bickering now lads, enough is enough. All this talk about who knows what and who´s right and who not doesn´t do at all and all of you should better. Everyone knows the managers doing his best and likewise his best is far from good enough but he´s a tryer and like his lads he´ puts a shift in. When the same lads stop calling him the gaffer, he´ll call it a day for sure. i was in the boardroom and heard it first hand Sir Billy, so no more talk about what you don´t know. As I said before: No Bickering now lads! Up the Wolves
