Adam Hammill wising up to the top flight

New-boy Adam Hammill insists he is using his ‘down-time’ at Wolves wisely this week after embarking on a programme to be ready for Premier League action.

The £500,000 signing is cup-tied for Sunday’s FA Cup fourth round clash at home to Stoke after his involvement in Barnsley’s 2-0 defeat at West Ham in the last round.

But the 23-year-old showed glimpses of his potential after coming on as a late substitute in the 3-0 reverse against his former club Liverpool at the weekend.

Now he admits it is time for hard graft on the training ground so he is ready for when Wolves return to league action at Bolton.

“I’m cup-tied this weekend so it’s a good time for me to gel in with the lads so they can get to know my game a lot more,” he said.

“It will give me time before the next Premier League game to mix in with the team. I’m doing core sessions and weight sessions to get myself ready for the Premier League.

“It’s more physical than the Championship because the players are faster and stronger.”

Hammill feels he has plenty to learn from fellow wingers Matt Jarvis and Stephen Hunt and knows he has a battle to win a place in Mick McCarthy’s starting XI.

“I don’t expect to walk straight into the team,” he said.

“I expect to work hard and battle. The manager is fair and he’ll give me the right opportunities.

“But I look at the two wingers ahead of me and they’ve got qualities I haven’t got and I want to learn from them so I can put those into my game.”

The former Liverpool reserve wants to inject some of the quality that was missing against the Reds into Wolves’ play.

“We put them under pressure and it was just in the final third that we just lacked a bit of quality sometimes,” he added.

“But that will come and the gaffer has kept us upbeat.”

Hammill insists Wolves have enough quality to stay in the Premier League.

“I’ve only trained with the lads a few times but I’ve been really impressed with the standard of the players,” he said.

“And with the effort and commitment shown by the lads, I’m sure those three qualities combined will keep our heads above water.”

What a strange two weeks it has been since our last game. I haven’t looked over my neighbour’s fence with as much interest since Pamela Anderson moved in next door and regularly used her trampoline, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.
