Wolves soon to sign Leigh Griffiths

Wolves soon to sign Leigh Griffiths

Wolves will complete the £150,000 signing of Dundee striker Leigh Griffiths tomorrow.

The 20-year-old will sign a two-and-a-half-year contract to become manager Mick McCarthy’s second capture of the January window, after last week’s £500,000 capture of Adam Hammill from Barnsley.

Seen as one for the future, the club wanted to have a longer look at the slightly-built forward after concerns over the player’s medical.

And Griffiths, who had a trial at Albion under Tony Mowbray, has been training with Wolves for the last 10 days after a fee was agreed with Dundee’s administrator.

McCarthy said: “We’ve had a look at Leigh in training and he’s certainly a good finisher.

“It’s clearly a big step from the Scottish First Division to the Premier League, but Leigh has a good goalscoring record up there and has plenty of potential.

“We have been successful with signing young players who have gone on to develop and make an impact and Leigh has a chance to fall into that bracket.

“We are very pleased to have added him to the squad.”

Griffiths today admitted he is “absolutely delighted” the move is going through.

He said: “It’s not every day you join a Premier League club and I’m buzzing.

“The manager said to me when I came in that he was going to look at me and see how I did and I’m just pleased to have done enough. I know I’m not walking straight into the team here.

“I’ve got to bulk myself up and work hard on the training field and then if I get my chance I must grab it with both hands.”

Fans will have to wait to see Griffiths in action, however, as he starts a two-match ban carried forward from his time in Scotland.

But the former Livingston hitman has a record to suggest he could be a hit at Molineux.

Griffiths has scored 10 goals in 20 games for the Scottish First Division outfit this season and a total of 29 in 56 appearances for Dundee, with a career record of 53 goals in 108 in league and cup outings.

Whilst i firmly believe a good strong centre back and left back are needed this is a good signing.Something that the bigger clubs have been doing for a while now identifying young talent and snapping them up before others do.
At the price paid both of this window’s signings appear to be good value for money.

I along with other Wolves fans realise this current team needs strengthening.Personally I believe the current team is only 3-4 players from being a Great team, that can go on to win honours. Why these weaknesses have yet to be addressed,is beyond me!

We were promised this season we would go for quality not quantity would you not agree this is not what we have been given. Secondly surely we should be giving some of our bright accademy players a chance first or am i just moaning. This player is Division 1 of the scottish league we have players playing on loan at much better places.
We were promised the “quality” due to the appaling transfer dealings of last year, where we signed lot’s of players but predominantly played the championship winning side. I know a Bolton fan who raves about Mark Davis now who did he used to play for????

May turn out to be a good signing. No one else is in for him, which is a not an encouraging sign.My betting is he will go the same way as Pat Buckley.John Teasdale and Charlie[?] Muldrew etc.Especially worrying if they think he is not strong enough.Let us hope the club have something up their sleeves before the end of the transfer window. It would certainly give us a boost.I do not like this scavenging from other clubs who are in financial trouble, the main criteria should be a footballers ability not the financial state of the selling club.

This article is not the place bemoan the lack of purchases for experienced players, use another article. A lot of people criticised the purchase of Hammill but he did more in 10 minutes on his debut than Hunt or Jarvis did in the first 45. Yes he fluffed his chance but at least he got in a goal scoring position which is more than can be said for Doyle or Fletcher.

Why do no Wolves fans see how clever this is. What if we do go down this season.

We’ll win the league a lot more convincingly than we did last time if we do.

That would give time for Hammill and Griffiths to develop even more. There is nothing negative about being in the Championship.

A lot of proper football, rather than Fabregas tripping over his laces or Torres crying because he can only score when he’s practically rolling it over the line…or Rooney shouting abuse at his own fans, happens in the Championship.

I’m not saying I want us to go down. Playing the Manchester Uniteds, Chelseas, Arsenals is fantastic…but what i’m trying to say is…Mick is the best manager we have had in a long time.

Look at Kightly (if he wasnt injured), Henry, Edwards, infact a lot of the team were lower league players bought cheap who became pretty good players under McCarthy.

Wolves have rolled a lot lower than 19th in the Premier League before…and we are there after playing with pride and playing pretty well, (most of the time).

All our team needs is experience. A decent left back would be good, but other than that, if we keep all our good players, we’ll be a lot higher in the premier league within 3 or 4 years.

You have to remember also, this January window is rubbish. The best left back that has been available is Wayne Bridge, and look how he played in his first game for West Ham. Zubar left back would be fine until the August window.

We can stay up. But negativity isn’t going to help the morale of our team. And if we go down, it’s not the worst thing in the world.

I love and support my club and will renew on the early birb regardless on the clubs current league position.

Robert Perry, you do realise that Derby & Boro, when they went down were carrying the baggage with them of doing what many Wolves fans appear (judging by these pages anyway) to want Wolves to do.

Derby had a spell of a few consecutive seasons in the Premier League and overspent trying to keep pace with the league. They went down and struggled with that debt. Despite promotion back up they were still carrying that debt with them and it’s still something they are struggling to get back from.

Boro after relegation panicked & sacked Southgate when, fairly early in the season, he hadn’t taken them top of the Championship for an immediate return (although if I remember right, he was around the play off places).

They are two great examples of why Wolves shouldn’t over extend ourselves on wages & fees and why the board shouldn’t panic over the managers position.
Also, whilst there is never a guarantee we would bounce straight back (if relegated), at the moment, our board refuse to do the 2 things than undid the 2 clubs mentioned above & so to that extent, we should be in a far stronger position than them.

We have a game in hand over West Ham and Wigan. WBA have one win in 9 and one of their senior players come out and slated the squad to the media last week and both them and Blackpool who soon lose teir best player will be down there mark my words, their bubbles have well and truly burst and at a time when our players are slowly starting to return.

Once SEB, Mancienne, Edwards, Guedoira, Craddock, Kightly and Henry are fully fit and Hammill settles in you watch us go above Albion and make considerable ground on Blackpool on the coming months.

Got to be realistically enough to accept that we cannot pay the price that the big clubs are paying for young talents and even betweem them they are making the highest bidder to secure Chamberlain from Southampton. And also we have to accept that these lads will not sign for Wolves and therefore we are forced to look elsewhere in the hope we find another Matt Jarvis and Kightly. There will be always gems here and there and it is what M.Mc Carthy is doing. We must not do the likes of Portsmouth,Leeds and surely West Ham if they are relegated will find themselves in big troubles. I think what S. Morgan wants to do in redeveloping Molineux is to give the club a platform in terms of future revenues and the City of Wolverhampton deserves a 50,000 capacity stadium. Why should we be afraid of that when you see Sunderland and other clubs have a better capacity than us. They are trying their utmost best to improve the club in various parts not only just on spending on players. I don’t think it is reasonable to pay £24m on Bent when he cannot command a place in the England team. These are incredible things that you see many times in the transfer market. Even if we have to face relegation, we can manage to follow the same path like Bolton and Blackburn who got relegated two or three times before, and they return to get a stable position now. As the manager explained on the Wolves’ web the other day it is so difficult to find palyers. Hope all the Wolves fans have taken note of that with these frank explanations and show the patience required.

come on mick, while blackpool and wigan have smaller budgets,a manager like holloway tactically is far more adept ,the lack of big signings will ultimately cost us relegation this time round ,credit to villa, spent the money ,knew what they were getting, staying up ,7 wins from 12 games almighty ask, minus arsenal /man u game of course, mediocre players in several positions, what happened to jvd transfer money?

63, Jack the Clown (On our page again)Off the top of my head a list is below. We could instead decide to try the Albion route, sign a guy who struggled at Wigan last season pay him way more than he is worth and let him have a clause to say he can leave if one of seven clubs come on for him? A Graham Dorrans who demands 4 new contracts to stop big spending West Ham getting it but can’t make the grade at this level? Stephen Reid fails a medical at Celtic after turning Albion down but goes back when another club oesn’t come in for him? 1 win in 9?

Not sure what all the fuss is about really -
MM says the squad vis good enough to stay up!
N ot sure either what has suddenly changed as we have had the same squad all season and the table does not lie!!I know we have had more than our share of injuries but we may get more in the next 5 months!
Why have we not replaced Van Damn? Does this mean that we never really needed him? If the answers is no, why did we spend £2.5 mil on him (I know we got it back) and lost a large chunk of money to his signing on fee and his agent (twice).
We need mature(not old) Prem players at centre back and left back!!
Even curtis Davis preferres Leicester to us!!!
I know he is not mature but he is far better at centre back than Berra & Stearman!!

    To all,

I am not a happy clapper and not a moaner, just a honest fan with an opinion.

Lets hope that the recent signing’s do turn out alright and prove an asset in future. So to all the new additions good luck and seize your chance when you get it.

What is blatently clear for all to see is that we Wolves fans have been lied to and led down the garden path by Moxey and Mick.

We were promised that we would buy Premier league quality and Experience and that has not materialised so that leaves a vast majority of season ticket holders frustrated at the clubs apparant lack of ambition. And don’t call Fletcher, Mouyokolo and co prem quality or experienced.

We also have the bizarre spectical of Mick rueing our poor defending, virtually all season and then not even attempting to address it when we have the chance.

I am not saying go out and spend loads of money on players, but surely we could have a good look at loaning players in, just to survive. If we don’t they go back to their own clubs, at least then the board can say we tried our best.

he also said the club can do no wrong in the happyclappers eyes. what great crime have the club commited? made promises to buy quality instead of quantity? and the realists are upset?

It’s unbelievably exciting this transfer window isn’t it? £650k on not one, but two players! I honestly think these two boys will make all the difference and help us to maintain our championship status next year, after the inevitable relegation of this year and the customary jumping ship of all the good players to who else but Blackpool.

    MILLS WOLF

The JVD transfer money proberly wasnt near the 2.5 Mil we paid for him but WE will NEVER REALLY know due to the stupid “undisclosed fee” moxey n morgan insist on !

Wolves board may well keep the buisiness side running smothly but on the P.R side, they DO NOT TREAT THE SUPPORTERS FAIRLY.

i LOVE my club, my whole family does, but we all think we have lost that special connection since SIR JACK bought in moxey sold up.

As for our signings, good invest, very buisiness like, but where´s that PROMISE gone about learning from last year and this time signing QUALITY PREMIERSHIP PLAYERS ?????

Nothing, none…. in 2 years in the prem, we havnt bought any…. not even 1 !!!

And looks very likley we wont be in the future

THIS FOR ME IS A REAL ISSUE, QUESTION IS WHY ?

    - Mick McCarthy, too stuborn, knows best, poor track record as a prem manger.

    or

    - Jez Moxey, penny counter, bought in on big bonus to make the club financialy viable, GREAT at saving us money but does lack that “he who dares” mentality

    or is the problem further

    - Steve Morgan, to be honest we dont see enough of him too judge, only see him when liverpool play, great eye for a bargain but lack any PASSION for Wolves. But maybe he see´s himself selling Wolves, once he does his NEW STADIUM on the cheap.

The 3 M´s come end of season will be either LEGENDS for keeping Wolves up on the cheap & things look great ahead

    or

get LYNCHED for failing to match the PREMIERSHIP SUPPORT & history with PREMIERSHIP PLAYERS again and risk years playing FIZZY POP football.

Does anyone remember Jake Cassidy from Airbus Utd or summit at the start of the season….. didn’t we beat off the Baggies & a few others for his signature …. so what happened to him, he was scoring goals for fun in one of the Welsh Leagues… wasn’t Sam Vokes one for the future he was also scoring goals for fun at Bournemouth…. what happened to him?? That’s right it need a bit of time for miracle management to coach the goal scoring ability out of them before they get a start??

What has happened to all our other promising Academy players…. Malone as a LB, Danny Batth CB, Mendez-Laing, Hemmings, Izzie … what in earth is happening up there to suggest these players might get a chance to prove they are better then what we have… surely the LB position could be served well by Malone..

Oh well lets hope they spend the next week coaching out Adam Hammils ability to score goals!!

rumour has it that when Sir Alex Ferguson released SEB from Man Utd. He said to him, you will be a good player in 3 years but I need a player who is ready now.

Hamill and Griffiths are great potential signing for the future but what about now Mick?
If you signed these players in addition to players who can made a difference to our relegation fight no problem but you havent.

I really feel we’ve been sold down the river but the 3Ms with their championship outlook and lack of ambition.

Are you telling me that we’ve looked all over the world and these are the best players we can find who we could afford???

This is about mick being too stubborn to see sense and Jez agreeing because hes a money and not a football man. The squad will give Mick everything and because of that he thinks thats enough.

Doyle and Hunt may remember the 2nd season in their reading premiership days when coppell chose to stick with same squad and not strengthen in the transfer window. When they got relegated he pointed this as one of his biggest regrets.

I’m happy after 38games to say I got it totally wrong if we stay up, but I will be calling for Micks head if we dont.

what makes anyone even think good players want to come here?

we’re second bottom, dont pay extravagant wages and have a very shambolic lopsided squad.
Are we as fans that arrogant to think we’re an attractive option for youre typical premier league Merc?

this guy has been bought in to replace doyle and/or fletcher who will both want off if we’re relegated. Hammill has been bought in to replace Hunt who has a history of jumping ship when a club goes down.

i say good luck to both lads and i hope they can hit the ground running and help us out of the championship next season cos as it stands we’re not staying in this fickle, biased monstrosity of a division anyway.

On match day a typical Happy Clapper will go to the pub before the match and enjoy 2 or 3 pints discussing the lighter side of football with her/his mates, topics such as ‘are female linesman wearing tighter shorts than male linesman?’JOKE!!

After the game a Happy Clapper will not resort to kneejerk reactions in respect of the result of the game but will search for anything positive i.e the new bloke swung in some good crosses on Saturday.

During the week a Happy Clapper will read the posts on this site letting the negativity flow over them but through it all they will be up for more Happy Clapping come match day.

Beer and banter are the central tenets of the Happy Clapper.
