Wolves may not make more signings
Monday 24th January 2011, 4:30PM GMT.
Wolves today entered the final seven days of the transfer window with manager Mick McCarthy insisting his squad is good enough to stay up without further improvements.
McCarthy has made just one signing so far this month, winger Adam Hammill, who made his debut as a substitute in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Liverpool.
Defensives mistakes again cost McCarthy’s side dear against a ruthless Reds outfit, as two goals came from a failed offside trap to leave Wolves second bottom and two points from safety.
McCarthy still wants a competitive midfielder after losing out to Fulham for Steve Sidwell and it is understood Wolves tried to bring in Galatasaray’s £5m former Sunderland captain Lorik Cana, who played with Ronald Zubar for three years at Marseille.
Contrary to weekend reports, Wolves will not be signing 20-year-old Manchester City centre-back Dedryck Boyata on loan.
And, with Jody Craddock and Steven Mouyokolo now fully fit, McCarthy is happy if he doesn’t sign anyone else.
He said: “There’s no doubt in my mind that we’ll be fine with the players we have. Everything we’ve tried so far we’ve come up against obstacles.
“We’ve been thwarted by various factors including geography and players wanting to go elsewhere.
“I’m delighted with the one we’ve brought in and we’ve got players coming back from injury.”
“Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Dave Edwards should be back soon and we’ve got Karl Henry, Steven Mouyokolo and Jody Craddock back.
“That will help and with getting all those back we’ll be fine.”
McCarthy emerged from talks with his players after Saturday’s game stressing they still believed in his methods.
But the Wolves boss admitted they lacked a “killer instinct.”
He said: “I asked them afterwards and they still believe in what we’re doing and the way we’re doing it.
“There are no cracks or people thinking we should be doing anything else.
“We had lots of play and lots of crosses, but we just missed that bit of quality and killer instinct when it was needed. I don’t think the scoreline was a true reflection of the game.
“We let them off the hook in the first-half with trying to play offside and that opened us up.”
