Stephen Ward’s challenge to Wolves

Stephen Ward has insisted Wolves aren’t at the end of the road after Saturday’s 3-0 drubbing against Liverpool and challenged the team to finish the season strongly again.

Wolves remained second bottom of the Premier League after their biggest home reverse since losing to Arsenal 4-1 in November 2009.

But left-back Ward insisted the players believe they will stay up.

He said: “Saturday’s result was disappointing, but it’s certainly not the end of the road. We finished last season strongly and we need to do the same thing again.

“We’ve made Molineux a tough place for teams to come and we want to keep it that way. We’re on a decent run if you look at our form over the last 11 games.

“We have won five and drew one.”

Wolves have faced Liverpool twice, Chelsea and Manchester City and have Manchester United and Arsenal to come after Stoke in the FA Cup and Bolton away.

Ward reckons it’s all about trying to get whatever they can in the current run before trying to cash in during the run-in when they face teams in the bottom half of the table. ”

He said: “We’re playing against some of the best teams and the best clubs at the moment.

“If we can get through that and stay in and around the chasing pack then we’ll have every chance, because we’ve then got the opportunity to get results against the teams in and around us.”

Defender Richard Stearman remains optimistic about the run-in.

He said: “There’s still a long way to go and you only need to put together a couple of results and you can climb a few places.

“We’re looking ahead to putting things right at the next game. In the first-half we didn’t produce the levels we’ve done recently.

“In the second-half we did better, but we were done with a sucker punch with a great finish from Raul Meireles.

“From there we were always chasing the game. I thought Liverpool were ruthless in both boxes.

“They defended very well and, at the other end, they put their chances away.”
