Wolves 0 Liverpool 3

A superb goal by Raul Meireles put Liverpool on their way to deepen the relegation worries of lacklustre Wolves.

Meireles volleyed home a spectacular finish in the roof of the net in the 49th minute to double the Reds’ lead, in between two tap-ins from Fernando Torres on 36 and in injury-time at the end to seal their first win since Kenny Dalglish returned as manager.

Watched by their biggest crowd of the season, 28,869 and including England manager Fabio Capello, Wolves were well beaten as Liverpool won at Molineux for the first time in 31 years.

Mick McCarthy’s side lacked their recent spark going forwards and only troubled goalkeeper Pepe Reina with shots from Steven Fletcher and Nenad Milijas, while substitute Adam Hammill scuffed his shot from six yards out on his debut against his first club.

The return of captain Karl Henry was the only change manager McCarthy made from last week’s 4-3 defeat at Manchester City as the teams emerged, led out by chairman Steve Morgan’s sons Red and Mark.

Midfielder Henry returned at the expense of David Jones, who dropped to the bench alongside new signing Hammill.

But Henry was part of a Wolves midfield that was a sad second best to Liverpool, for whom the shaven-headed Meireles ran the show.

On a pitch that was rapidly cutting up, action was fast, furious and scrappy in the early stages.

Christophe Berra went off after four minutes after suffering a gashed head after he was caught by Meireles in an aerial clash at a corner before returning to the fray.

Early on, Wolves were typically gutsy and didn’t allow Liverpool to settle, snapping into them at every opportunity.

Goalkeeper Pepe Reina ran a gauntlet of abuse from the capacity crowd after running 80 yards to ‘assist’ in the sending off of Stephen Ward at Anfield on Boxing Day 2009.

There were also words exchanged between substitute goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann and the Liverpool bench.

But it was the visitors who created the only chances of the first-half, with goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey forced into serious action twice before the Reds took the lead.

Torres was first to test the Wales international, who parried wide after the striker cut inside Berra after being put through by Meireles.

Nenad Milijas curled a 25-yard free kick a foot over, before Meireles volleyed narrowly wide from distance after a Torres backheel.

Hennnessey then smothered from Rodriguez after the winger cut inside Berra.

Then came the first goal, Torres steering home his 10th of the season, after a superb pass from Christian Poulsen split the Wolves defence and beat the offside trap for Meireles to run onto and cross.

Lifted by the goal, Liverpool continued to attack and Torres in particular, was suddenly looking very lively.

But it was Wolves who threatened next and, in their first serious attack of the game six minutes before the break, Fletcher’s left-foot shot brought a diving save from Reina after build-up play involving Kevin Doyle and Milijas.

Milijas missed a real chance in time added on at the end of the first-half, firing straight at Reina from point-blank range at the far post after creeping around the back from Stephen Hunt’s swirling free kick.

Berra emerged for the start of the second-half with his head heavily bandaged.

But the Wolves defender soon had a lot more than his cut to worry about as Liverpool doubled their lead within four minutes of the restart.

There seemed little danger when Berra headed clear, but Meireles met it full on the volley that flew into the top corner of the net for a sumptious goal that gave Hennessey no chance.

Wolves enjoyed plenty of possession, but couldn’t convert it into chances and they weren’t helped by a poor final ball at times.

But Fletcher almost broke the gloom for the home side with a deflected shot in the 66th minute that Reina caught going the wrong way, after Milijas’ pass over the top to Jarvis wasn’t cleared.

Ronald Zubar allowed Rodriguez to get the wrong side of him but thankfully his shot was too weak to trouble Hennessey.

With Wolves trying to push up, Liverpool should have scored a third goal in the 74th minute.

Torres freed the galloping Meireles on the overlap to cross to the unmarked Jonjo Shelvey. But, with only Hennessey to beat, the Liverpool substitute fired woefully wide.

Wolves then attacked with purpose, Berra heading inches over from Milijas’ corner before Hammill scuffed his shot from six yards out.

Hammill looked bright from the off, crashing in two tremendous crosses either side of his attempt on goal, the latter headed over by Doyle.

Torres had a shot smothered by Hennessey going the wrong way, after it clipped Berra, before Fletcher headed over from Jarvis’ cross.

But it was very much Liverpool’s day and Torres underlined the Reds’ supremacy by rifling their third goal into the roof of the net, meeting a loose ball from close range after Berra played Kuyt onside and Richard Stearman slid in to block.

Back to back defeats mean poor Wolves know they have plenty to do in this relegation battle.

But the 1st goal?! WTF!!! Zubar is playing them on but stearman steps up without checking no one is behind him, you cant do that!

And like that wasn’t bad enough ward, stearman and berra just stop and stand with there arms in the air, torres runs past stearman (who is standing still with his arm up) to finish the goal! so so sloppy

The way torres dropped the ball at stearmans feet after his goal spoke volumes, he messed up BAD!!

2nd Goal World class but still no one closing him down or within a metre of him

3rd Goal, mistake by zubar and ward again, they step up and Berra is playing everyone onside, ward actually stops and points for someone to get kuyt?! but he doesnt get him himself?!

We looked really poor today and to top it off Hammill missed a sitter he nutmegged himself and fell over, embarrassing!! he said ‘i’ve got a point to prove to liverpool’ ermmm think u proved it mate they let you go for good reason!!

Stearman the only player imo to emerge from the game with any credit. We were toothless and clueless going forward and when we needed Jarvis to produce something going forward he failed, too often hitting the ball out of play.

Liverpool were there for the taking today and we just didnt turn up and with our run of fixtures i can see us not getting more than a point from the next three games. Oh and the new boy has got off to a flyer, i could have done better on my crutches with that chance, but we wont hang him out to dry just yet, one more chance eh??!!

    As for survival??

You could see the confidence drain from the boys today and as the games go by i worry more each week.

Extremely dissapointed today. First of all what was that first half all about? Despite our better peformances playing passing football we once again resort to passing it back to hennessey and him hoofing it upfield where it is then 50 50 weather we keep possession. Why? The first goal was a joke. Why are we trying to play offside against one striker? Why cant we pull it off? Its because not one of the defenders are disciplined enough to do it. Zubar and berra were guilty of straying for the first and last goal. Ward once again giving far too much space to his player so many times today.
I dont want to keep harping on about the defence but they just arent good enough.
The trouble today though was too many players werent up to it. Milijas and zubar probably had there worst games, Jarvis and hunt didnt come into it until the second half and all the front players lacked that bit of quality in the final third. One positive was hammill who looked bright when he came on, although typical mccarthy switches him and jarvis after hammill played 2 quality balls in the box and jarvis starting to threaten on the left.
We have to get something from bolton away now, i know its only one game but things are looking a lot bleaker after today. We have to sign a left back and centre half and i would drop zubar for foley next game.
Also how bad was the pitch today? shocking.

Well I don’t know what little gems played today Mick. The team looked tired and most have played 3 games in a week and we haven’t got enough quality in the squad to mix and match.
Henry, what can you say, he can’t make a forward pass which means by the time he has thought about it the ball has to go out wide and their defence is packed.
Jones looked better last week in providing some forward impetus.
Hammill looked lively and at least he crossed the ball. Jarvis and Hunt’s crossing was awful today.
The defence is paper thin, and we can’t get a head or foot on the ball in the penalty area even playing with 2 forwards. So how are we going to survive without some decent reinforcements.

Well we will all have opinions over a pretty dreadful performance so here is my tuppence worth.
    - Cannot agree with London Wolfie – Zubar as identified by EVERYONE on Sky was badly at fault and indeed had a shocker
    - Ditto previous point for Berra on 3rd but we had at least already lost
    - defence as a whole pretty shocking with only Stearman showing any discenible defensive talent
    - Am I the only person who wonders why we ever wanted to pay £5M for Hunt? – he was awful and we play Jarvis out of position on the right to accomodate him
    - Milijas seems a fans favourite but was peripheral to the action
    - Henry can tackle but oh dear he cannot pass the ball in a forward direction
    - Doyle and Fletcher £12M combined certainly did not look it and oh for a centre fprward who is good in the air if M.M. decides to play with Jarvis and Hammil in tandem – surely a postive proposition
In summary unless this team learns to defend (a smewhat unlikely prospect) it is back to the championship where at least from an attacking viewpoint this team will prosper – do though wonder why a manager that was a pretty good defender himself cannot sort this aspect out.

The tactical genius strikes again !!
Once again McCarthys’ blind loyalty to one of his favourite has clouded his judgement to the detriment of the team.

Whilst Karl Henry does a very good job as the extra man in a 5 man midfield, he DOES NOT and NEVER WILL offer anything in a 4-4-2. He slows down our game and with his sideways/backwards play he takes all attacking impetus out of the team.

Since Henry has been injured we have done very very well thank you very much. switching to 4-4-2 and playing quick, attacking, up and at ‘em football.

IN THE 8 GAMES KARL HENRY HAS MISSED, WE HAVE WON 4 AND ONLY FAILED TO SCORE IN 2, SO WHY, OH WHY CHANGE IT McCARTHY? YOU IDIOT.

Henry is not good enough in a 4-4-2 or the premier league. IRS no coincidence we gave a better points to game ratio with him not in the team.

We have to bring in some quality defenders. Stearman is to casual and is error prone, Berra is to slow, Ward is not a LB!

Also, Hennessey must throw it out and not keep hooding it up the pitch, we won no headers and gave the ball away each time.

I don’t think anyone emerged with any credit today, we deserved to lose. Having gone to Man City and lost last week, I was proud of the lads even though there were defensive errors. Today we were awful, no real fight and our heads dropped. No quality either, we looked out of our depth.

I know he is there as a ball winner but the persistent negative passing gets to me. I’m really trying hard to think of something positive to write . The only competition we could win is if someone initiated a game where you had to run backwards.
Absolutely no tactics. Why keep running back when the opponent has the ball. Why can’t players mark their opponent – by giving the opposition so much space they can pick out the best move. I firmly believe that with just a couple of defensive additions, but with tactics enabled, we could make our mark.

One bonus is that there is a chance that we won’t get relegated again next year. I suggest that Mick the Magicians next job should be in Siberia which is even further East than Rudd Gullits latest jaunt. After Micks comments over the last couple of days I just want to throw-up. Looking for GEMS and no more decent players to come in before the end of the month. This guy really lives in the clouds. What a way of giving thousands of supporters a lift. If I was a so called TOP MANAGER in any other business and produced these results and made those comments then I would have picked up my P45 ages ago. The truth is that every time Mick goes to bed he has nightmares because if he was to sign a couple of defenders they might turn out to be better than he was a million years ago. P.S. Apart from Stearman the rest was clueless, and Zubar played the worst game since he came here, he made so many mistakes before half time yet MM left him on the pitch??? One bright note was the appearance of Hammill who looked like a player who could actually ‘cross a ball’ so at least he looks promising. So much for MM’s preferred striking partnership. Fletchwer fluffed every chance he had and cult hero Doyle managed to avoid getting into a striking position, preferring to head towards teh sidelines each time.Hunt is another keogh running around in circles and he has absolutely no ball control or passing ability. My god Ward is looking like the best player on the park at the moment!!!With Henry playing we reverted to the sidewards and backwards form of attack much beloved in the earlier part of the season. Milijas tried to provide piercing passess but more often than not Mr Doyle managed to crowd out any space that Jarvis had tried to create in order to take advantage of Milijas passes. Zubar was out of sorts, although he at least tried to move the ball forward, noticeably nobody seems to like receiving the ball from Zubes throw ins. Hennessey, Stearman and Berra were ok but were often left exposed. We definately need a striker to replace Doyle and Fletcher and SEB must play on his return from injury as he appears to b teh only striker we have who can head a ball and isn’t afraid of shooting. As you can tell from my rant I am well ***** off with that performance.

Now Craddock may be past his best but to me he is still head and shoulders above any one else on our books who can play that position.

I just think we need a very strong leader at the back that can calm things down organise the line and bring confidence to those around him.

lets face it today we played poor however had they not scored that 2nd (superb goal!!) maybe things would have been different.

On a more upbeat note well don Adam Hammil on a lively 1st 20mins. For all those complaining why we had to buy another winger then I for one am pleased that it seems we have strengthened the squad.

We were beaten by a better team today, who realised they had to match us for commitment before releasing their slightly better quality, but our season will not be defined by games against Liverpool, Man Utd and Arsenal. The last 12 games will decide, all big clubs out of the way, and the real season begins, when goalmakers and goalscorers will be crucial. We have them although apart from Milijas, were poor today. I lost count of how many unnecessary back passes were made to our goalkeeper today instead of moving play up field.

I lost count of how many of those back passes were simply punted upfield by our goalkeeper and but I know that less than fifteen percent went to a Wolves player.

I also lost count of how many balls were just headed up field with no particular target player in mind and if there was a target player in mind, then it must be obvious the headers were woefully inacurate.

Torres showed Stearman exactly what we can all see about the guy, except his own mnager who was himself a center half! Pitiful. He tries but he simply isn´t up to it. The whole team tries but they likewise are not of the calibre required to do the job.

I again like a fool travelled from DUBLIN hoping my home town club would do something positive, what do i get is to sit in my hotel room and try and understand what is happening at wolves.
Every single time this year when we have been expected to get something from a game we have failed miserabbly.
Yet give us a game were we have only one expectation to “lose” we perform.
Since last season I have said”Ward and MICK need to go”If Mick was a good manager he would never play “WARD”.Ward as not been a waste of money, but in this league he as been caught napping at left back far to often, far to often.
Henry is a “SPOILER” and at this time of the season we need someone who is going to play.Henry should be tried in defence and be instructed get the ball and Hoof it up.
Berra gets turned far to easily and seems to play two ways in every game, can make good tackles and follows a good tackle with poor play.
Zubar can just have a off day out of the blue, yet in some games he is very good.
Jarvis since his link to England,as not been the player he was a few games ago.Jarvis needs to find his demon and attack.
Hunt is useless,I said this when we bought him, hunt is a trier but usually looks like a headless chicken.Yet the great MICK bought him injured!!!Doyle just does not look like scoring ,yet amazingly people think he is very important to the team, the only things DOYLE can do effectively is CHEST down a hoofed up ball turn and lose it,or get free kicks. This season DOYLE as had a total of “SEVEN” shots at goal!!!!!Yet comes out in the week claimimg how we need goals as goal difference could matter,I will only say one thing to that “SCORE THEN!!”.
Fletcher is starting to show some ball control and given time could start to repay some of his FEE.
Stearmen was very good day and seems to be growing in confidence and stature.Milijias is playing well in all departments, made two or three tackles and is looking stronger.
Mujangi came on last week and looked good, midweek he looked good and got into great scoring positions(more than doyle as done in anyone game)and where was he today?
No-One in the right mind can defend “MICK”in the current climate Mick would and should have been sacked after 10GAMES!.
I love wolves as much as anyone else, but unlike some HAPPY CLAPPERS I cant sit back and watch us been taken down by “MICK”!
With our resources and some of the players at our disposal we should be doing much better than we are,as the league at best is “GOOD”.
All true wolves fans can see what is wrong and what is required, yet “merlin the muppet”cant !!!One thing positive for MUPPET is his players put in a shift,so would I for 90minutes if I got there SALARIES.
The difference today was,Mick is a huff and puff,a little bit of a ranter and raver and is not calm and cool but is a frantic guy.Dalglish is calm, cool, calculated and fearless boss, and today there teams reflected there MANAGERS.

Really poor today & I’d go as far to say, probably outclassed, the scousers were that much better (god, that hurts!!!)

I notice the usual suspects are on here looking for a scapegoat & surprise surprise it’s Karl Henry, for some reason???, IMO he was no worse that any of the others.

Fletcher, Stearman & Jarvis had awful games, not sure what has happened to Jarvis in recent weeks, his quality has vanished along with his paper-thin confidence.

One person who should be ‘holding his hand up’ is McCarthy, outfoxed by Daglish today & didn’t have the Brains or courage to change it round when we were clearly being overun by them in midfield, coz they played an extra man in there & for some reason the stubborn/arrogant one thinks that our 2 are going to be better that their 3 in the middle of the park & also instructing his players (in particular Hennessey) to miss out midfield & lump it up the forwards every time & every time it came straight back at us, we hardly strung 3 passes together, we didn’t build any attacks, we just kept hammerin the ball up the field, nothing was to feet & when we do that we look such a poor team & I don’t think we as bad as we played today, but we have to keep the ball better, then we will see if the opposition have the desire to work hard enouh to get it back.

We didn’t do that today & made it too easy for Liverpool & 0-3 was a fair result.

Silver lining, the new kid looked decent when he come on & Milijas did well when he was on the ball, though, he wasn’t on it enough!!!

Very disapointing, many more performances loke this & the fat lady will be clearing her throat.

That’s it! Relegation is a banker for Wolves. It is high time that the manager takes the opportunity to blood some of the youngsters from the academy plus giving Sam Vokes his chance. After 1980′s League Cup win Wolves when relegated have never won a match when same is billed as crucial. They have always lost heavily. Also during our 3 years in the Premiership they have only won twice when their game is televised. Otherwise they were already freezed before turning up to play the match. It is the same farcical one they produced this evening. They were already freezed when taking the field. Last week they gave Tevez plenty of time to race in and three buffoons looked at him and no one took the initiative to attck him. I repeat this because it was the same thing when Anelka was allowed to pass the ball to offer Chelsea their first goal at Stamford Bridge. There are so many times these buffoons look at attackers and could not but receding all the time to allow them to reach the penalty area where the ball is in the net before they realize it was too late. Why the so-called defenders do not take a seat in the stand rather on the field. They could easily clap their hands when Wolves concede stupid goals like that. The Man City game was lost when Tevez was given ample time to run with the ball. But the medias of course were first to say what a goal, but it was easy for a school boy on that day or any other day to score against Wolves given that three Wolves players will always be spectators instead of defending properly. Relegation will be a very good thing for Wolves as this will inevitably bring changes and some players will go because they think they are world-class players. Bring the youngsters to the fore and a new-look Wolves will fare better next time they happen to be in the Premiership.

Like “doyle” we need goals he says, pleased he noticed, but can someone tell him he is the “STRIKER”!

Thought I’d look it up for myself,he did score a record 52 goals in all competitions for the Wolves, sadly it was in the old 4th division and the rest of his goals were outside the top flight but he did play once in the old 1st division,as sub for that smaller club up the A41.
You may be right about him having an influence in the match today,he would be used to playing on worse pitches than the normal standard in the premiership.

I think today proved once and for all we can not get complacent. It has happened time and again with games such as the wigan and west ham games, we gave positive performances and gained positive results in the games prior to these and we get into our heads we are playing well. However in the following subsequent games we fail to recognise that the reason we gained such positive results and positive performances was because we worked for them. It was clearly obvious to me today that we expected the same level of performance that we got against City to just happen and we deservedly got punished for this complacency.
All 3 goals were very poor defending. I’m not saying it is the definite reason but there is certainly a correlation between Ward and the number of goals we have conceeded. In the 2 games he has been back in the team at left back we have conceeded 7 goals, while the mid-week game against doncaster when he was out we kept a clean sheet?! However Ward is definetely used as a scape goat and I dont want to point the finger of blame solely at him, I am just recognising a link between the two. The first and third goal were just atrocious attempts at playing offside. However the second goal was the worst piece of defending I have seen all year. Yes I know it was a fantastic volley but watch Match of the Day and you will see that from a free-kick to liverpool on the half way line we get into a 3 vs 3 situation. The article above described it as little danger when Berra headed clear however berra’s header landed right on meireles’ foot 20 yards out, so he didnt really clear it did he.
The first and the third goal may have been due to failed attempts at the offside trap, however if we had been playing at our usual intensity, which have produced result against chelsea and Liverpool away, they could have been very easily avoided. This was apparent especially for the third goal where usually we would be closing players down on their touch, however we gave them far too much time to control, turn and pass, making liverpool look like world beaters and us like clowns. Henry was extremely rusty, Hunt and Jarvis didnt put a decent ball in all game, I thought Fletcher played well holding the ball up and laying it off to them but he didn’t get the crosses in return. Hammill did what Hunt couldn’t do in 70 mins and put a decent ball in but then he went and missed a big chance.
I have no doubt that our next peformance will be much better as they will have realised that they must work every game for their results, however as our next game is in the FA cup I just hope no complacency enters for the Bolton game if we beat stoke.

A horrible result, (although 3 flatters Liverpool), and a worringly flat performance, not helped by McCarthy’s failure to respond to Liverpool’s obvious midfield superiority.4-4-2 is certainly the first choice approach given our situation; but we were so patently obviously being overrun in the middle that an extra body should have been introduced in this area as soon as they went 1 up.
Henry and Milijas doesn’t look a viable pairing to me; too slow and lightweight- whilst Doyle and Fletcher look similarly ill-matched up front.
This is nit-picking, though, as there were shortcomings in most areas of the field today, other than keeper and, surprisingly, centre half; these three being our best players today, IMO.
The writings on the wall; we can’t afford another result like this- the Derby games could represent a minimum of a 6-8 point return at this rate.

Zubar for all his good play going forward, is clueless about how to defend properly, he was responsible for the first goal. Abject performance today. We didn’t press a poor Liverpool team and allowed them to play. Playing 4-4-2 against a team that plays 4-5-1 was always going to leave us exposed in the middle. Why is MM so rigid with tactics and he must have some record in the Premiership regarding the lateness of making substitutions.

My MM amnesty has expired but I do not expect the 2M’s to do anything. It’s seems to me they are content with relegation. Buying a player who may have potential instead of a central defender, left back and midfielder smacks of a lack of ambition.

How many times have YOU those words this season and as we are nearing the and of the January transfer window, are there any central defenders being spoken to about moving to Molineux?
The answer – Well none that we have heard about, so do we have to endure more and more defensive errors until the outcome many are expecting will become reality – RELEGATION!
Mick, signing a winger is fine BUT how many defenders are on your list?
I truly hope you are going to spend some money on 2 quality defenders because should you not do so then the inevitable will happen and GOD help you if it does!

    Very, very disappointing.

We looked well off the pace all game with a number of players under par. There were a whole host of issues and many are the same ones we had last season and haven’t solved.

For example; lack of a specialist left back; weakness in central defence; Henry slows down our play and doesn’t ever threaten offensively; Jarvis’s final ball is often not good enough (he is also too predictable in always looking to make the cross and not running at the heart of the defence) and Doyle looks completely unthreatening as a goal scoring striker.

The reality is that MM will not get the sack and probably doesn’t deserve to given his achievements here. What is concerning though is his comments that he is happy with his squad and not looking to bring in established players.

While we have a number of good honest players who will always try, and some good prospects, we also need to get a couple of experienced quality players quickly.

What about Kranjcar at Spurs for midfield for instance? Obviously Keane would be a great addition though whether we could get him on loan looks doubtful (and we won’t want to commit to his fee / wages given our league position).

We should forget the stadium redevelopment and make every effort to stay up. We know how difficult it is to get out of the Championship so let’s give it all we have got to stay up rather than seemingly buying players to contend for a future promotion campaign.

Nr 14 100% Wolves…TOTALLY AGREE with you 100%..Karl Henry is good in a 5 man midfield, but not in 4-4-2..why skip Dave Jones? IF we would have stayed with more positive inner midfield we would have had more possession and our wingers and attackers would have been more in the game.Instead we dont have possession and put more pressure on our own defence.. We have played such positive football without Henry in the team, and im SO SO tired of his passing sideways and back..and then our goalie kick the ball to the opposite team..

Doesnt McCarthy watch the games?? I can say I was almost a little positive while Henry got injured, but of course dont want players get hurt, but was excited to see what it could do to our passing game and i think we have played some really good games and won some.

Thats 13 games played ok but lost, when is the penny finally going to drop that we arent good enough and need additions particularly to the defence as we are now becoming relegation favourites ???

Yes liverpool played a lot better and has a touch more quality which showed but its clear some of the player should have been rested against doncaster as they looked flat today.

Zubar had a very poor game and looked tired. He should have been take off in 2nd half.

Jarvis/Mijlas/Hunt rarely put a decent cross in all game. Jarvis crossing was very poor.
When a decent cross came in such as the one by Hammill, movement was poor and no one reacts.

Fletch/ doyle didnt get much service but didnt look sharp. In fact I think they could have played all night and never look like scoring against a shaky liverpool defence.

I dont really rate ward but i think he had a really decent game as did Stearman but Henry was the best player today by far for me. He didnt give the ball away or hoof it forward to no one, and tried to get the team playing

I heard moxley on the radio before the game saying how confident the club are of staying up and how they wont overspend.Tom ross didnt ask him about the 12 defeats, and how a team that has lost so many can win 6/7 in the next 15 with the same players and no experienced or quality players coming in.Moxely said Jarvis will not be sold in january but Tom ross didnt ask him how we will cope with blackhole in our budget should we get relegated and lose all that sky money?? will we have to sell jarvis,Miljas, doyle, fletch then?

We def need a quality centre half who can play consistently well throughout a game not just for 80 mins and switch off for the rest.

I also think we need a 4th striker, someone who lives in the penalty box. Better if he can get his head on crosses and corners too, which none of the strikers we have can.Thats if we put in a good cross.

On the plus side, and there weren’t many positives lets face it, Hammill can put dangerous early crosses into the box which is promising, the two of significance he produced would have caused more problems, if we had a big man there to get on the end of them, a Carew or Heskey, (I am not advocating we sign either of them) but a player in that type of mould. Wolves can be saved!!!I could pick out a few manager candidates from this site, who would do the job for “NOTHING”.
We fans are correct to ask WHY is MICK still in charge of our great club.
MICK and co need to realise we are on our way down,we need some inspiration,we need some players dropped, and we need to bring in players from our reserve team,if we are not willing to spend the money,VILLA buy BENT and he is one goal shy of what doyle as scored all season, and its only his first game!
Doyle,Ward,Henry,Hunt need to be rested for the season or put on the SUBS bench.
All players have bad games, but can anyone tell me what “DOYLE,WARD and HUNT”have contributed.Hunt as scored a goal or two but mostly as looked like a player who is well of the pace,he seems to run around in circles,I dont doubt his effort.
MICK as to go,he as done very well and that is appreciated, but it is not an excuse for him to make a total dog,s **llock of our club.
Yes these very players can bring us back up,but I am being totally fair by saying we are going down due to “MICK”.
I will back MICK,if he would sit down in the town hall and explain to some fans of some of his decisions, signings, tactics, defensive choices and what some of the methods he is applying are for?
This will certainly help him and the fans and may enable us to move forward together.
As mick makes some mystifying decisions,he says certain things on television interviews, and then his actions suggest the opposite! He seems to know the problem areas and were we are struggling, yet does nothing.!

All i can say on todays performance, is why on earth was henry brought back in, he slowed the game down passing backwards, passing sideways,Leave him out he ay good enough.the team were playing well with out him. top marks to stearman and berra thought they done well, everyone else in big games you need to raise your game you no whats at stake, jarvis is off the pace my gran could cross a ball better a the moment. i feal sorry for doyle, works hard as a striker but never gets any open play shooting chances. sign a left back and get stephen ward back up front. i thought he played well up there, he looked comfortable and worked hard. MM time to get hard and not put on the pitch your favourites, time to put on the pitch the players who want to win. otherwise its the championship again. too much money and enough pride.

everyone knows I don’t like Mick but I was pleased to see him start with a good midfield and fletch and Doyle upfront.. I thought fletcher and hammil were the only bright points of a terrible game.. I can’t understand why so many fans slate Henry ? Maybe I’m missing something? Yes today he wasn’t great And although he lacks creativity,he does a job which no other midfielder we have can do because our best in guedioura isn’t fit till march.. Ward was absolutely shocking AGAIN and so was stearman ( nothing new there tho )

What an absolute load of rubbish, we have some talent in our squad which the muppet in charge of Wolves either under uses or plays out of position. Sorry Mick, its all down to you, you are not up to it, and if owner Morgan withdrew hi head from the ‘sand’ which seems unlikely now, the chance of a new experienced Manager could still, even at this late stage, pull us out of relegation.
Because of Morgans apparent lack of interest, suggests he would not be too fussed if Wolves were relegated, he would be able to divest himself of the club, and do something with his money that really interests him.
No other owner would have put up with half of Mccarthy’s antics, ask yourself why he is still there , then consider the owners options if relegated, its clear he wants to cut his losses and get out, dosen’t care if Wolves survive, clearly by his actions and non actions, he cares little if Wolves survive.

If Wolves are relegated which seems likely, there is only one person who must shoulder the full blame, and that is Mr Morgan, who has other agenda’s that do not include Wolves survival

I repeat my comments of a few days ago, Kenny will get his first win, all Liverpool had to do was sit down with a nice cup of tea and watch the video of the City game. Their tactics were made very simple, allow us forward then do us for pace. We cannot get back, our recovery is pathetic and we are to say the very least inept and third rate.

As for the man again using the defensive error excuse, ‘It Is Your Bloody Team Mate, You Set It Up, You Dictate The Tactics and Frankly YOU continually FAIL ! Now, go on call me a Numpty, I just cough up each week, YOU run the show and YOU not the Players or Supporters and the Numpty.

Right now the prospect of relegation is frightening because I doubt if we could do Norwich, Watford, Cardiff or….get this Brighton, who at this present time would play us off the park.

AND before all you so called Happy Clappers have a go at me, my first attendance was Arsenal in 1948 and I have been there ever since.

We are going down – this I do believe now. I hate to say it but it is almost a forgone conclusion. MM and he other M’s in this Club do not seem to care or want to do too much about it. 53 – I am amazed how anyone can say say Hennessey was our best player today. Every time i see him play its the same approach to hoofing it up the pitch. Time after time he gave the ball away and the pressure is back on us. Would the manager / coach / someone 1) teach him how to throw the ball and 2) teach our full backs to move into space so that they can receive the ball and keep possession. If we cannot do basics like this then we simply don’t deserve to be in the Premiership.

My eyes rolled when i saw Henry was playing. He must be the most negative midfielder in the Premiership. His first thought is always to pass it sideways or backwards – but its not the sort of passes that keeps possession like other midfielders are involved in – it usually puts us on the back foot. There was one instance today when he had the ball in acres of space and several passing options and guess what, he passed it back to the keeper. Either he isn’t good enough or this aspect of his game needs to be coached.

The tv commentators noted that there was no obvious talking between the Wolves players and no one seeming to want to take charge. I saw a quote from McCarthy recently that the team is lacking captains or leaders on the pitch. Well he’s had 4 seasons now to sign a leader but has failed miserably.

I don’t want to see Wolves go down but if we went down and a new manager brought in then i could see light at the end of the tunnel. What this team needs is someone to choose the right formation, play the best players for that formation, make us difficult to beat and from that should come belief and confidence and better play. It is obvious that Daglish is having an effect at Liverpool. What appalled me is that even if we go down Mad Mick will still be in charge. So we can all look forward to a few more years of this rubbish.

Will the Board please wake up and smell the coffee.

    Shocking performance yesterday.

Henry – agree with most points above. Negative, incapable of passing forwards or creating anything. No vision and no leadership (Captain? Hmmm..). He will never be dropped though, MM loves the guy ‘he is a good player for me, puts a shift in’ etc etc..

Quality of crossing was terrible, mind you we don’t have forwards capable of heading the ball anyway.

Defence – It’s like watching slow motion sometimes. I kept thinking the whistle had gone and that’s why they weren’t looking bothered. Clearing of the ball was embarrasing at times.

Kick-off – I just cannot understand this tactic of kicking it straight back to the keeper to go on and lose possesion. It’s negative and screams desperate long ball tactics from minute one.

Tactics – Honestly couldn’t say I noticed any. Get it wide and cross it into an empty box?

Substitutions – chasing the game with most players well below par but only making one substitution? Clueless.

The team will be the same at Bolton, Ward will keep his place from George. Mind you whats the lesser of those two evils..

We’re just not good enough this season and there aren’t 3 teams worse than us. For all this talk of good team spirit and battling qualities it’s pointless if we can’t keep clean sheets and/or score at the other end. Not feeling confident at all.

Even changing the manager might not help, the fact is that half our squad isn’t good enough at this level ask yourself why there is no serious offer for any of them. The board obviously has little ambition and the poor fans are getting short shift.
Solution is radical action needed to shore up the leaky defence. Just play one up front and get the wingers bursting forward.I reckon that this will happen at Bolton and we might nick a win.

    46. Hello Grace nice to talk to you again !!! I guess you have me wrapped upin the ‘usual suspects’ picking on Henry ? And you’d be right. You make some very good points in your post but if you would permit me to append to them…..

….”we were clearly being overrun in midfield” – we had no midfield because Henry was sat far too far back on the toes of the defence. The rest of the midfield therefore also played deep leaving a huge swathe of the field where our midfielders should have been free for Liverpool to do what they liked in.

“….”we hardly strung 3 passes together” – because any pass that Henry made was to the defence who were being pressed too far back due to Henry insisting that he plays right on their toes and the midfield being too deep, therefore to reach one of our forwards it was hoof ball again.

I could go on but I won’t !! When Mick bought on Hammill it should have been Henry going off. Apart from everything else he was two yards off the pace of the game. He does not fit into a 4-4-2 system. When he’s on the pitch with Milijas, Milly doesn’t get the frredom to play the ball. Sorry I am going on but as 100%Wolf said in his post. The facts don’t lie. We won four of our last 8 games without Henry. Why oh Why does MM insist on tinkering with something that seems to be working. Oh, and one last thing. We have to stop trying to play the offside trap. Henry (yes him again !!) forces us to play too deep and cramps the defence so one side moves up, the other, because Henry is in the way stays deep – DOH ! offside trap doesn’t work. End of rant !!

63 Sue I will try, it is not all his fault.

When he is not in the team we generally play better, as last season.
He is all effort and committed to the Wolves, however that is not enough, he is a negative player and limited in vision/forward play, he plays team mates into trouble with side passes when they have an opposing player near them, too many back passes, gives too many fouls away, and gives balls away, as he did yesterday when Liverpool nearly scored.
He is not a Captain, not motivational, argues with the Ref, and dosen’t organise the defense as was seen clearly yesterday, he was no where to be seen.
Some of above is his fault as is Ward when he lays off the winger, however the majority is McCarthy’s fault, he selects these players, tactics, etc. Whilst he is in charge we are destined for Relegation sad to say.

(Never mind being expected to play decently) It may well be true that you know nothing. Karl obviously knows nothing either but he gets paid shed loads of money into the bargain. That´s why Karl Henry gets so much stick when we lose. He can´t play and he shows no leadership qualities at all and he clearly dares not tell MM where his godot is going wrong. The unfortunate reality is that we have a championship team trying to compete in the Premier League. Our lads do their best and within the limitations of their ability will regularly give us 7 out of 10 week in week out. The problem is that we need them to give us 9 out of 10 every week in order to compete against established premiership teams. With the best will in the world, our players can’t do that for every match which is why we can’t maintain any consistent form (as was apparent yesterday). Our manager has placed too much emphasis on players “putting a shift in” at the expense of everything else and as a consequence we have a team that in premiership terms has a great workrate ethic but very little quality. For example, (and I know its not a fair comparison but hopefully you will see the point I am trying to make), Kevin Doyle was so busy running all over the pitch yesterday that he offered little threat in front of goal, Torres on the other hand put in far less effort (unless you count cynical fouls and constant moans to the officials)but did what he is paid to do and scored twice. We all have our own views on why we are where we are but the table and results tell the real story. I believe that we will see a few more 9 out of 10 performances from the team between now and the end of the season but not enough to keep us up. I really hope I am proved wrong but I really can’t see how things are going to change.

Watched the game on ESPN yes low and behold they featured it on Saturday live.
There I was all of a flutter to watch the lads turn over the scousers one more time.

They played my type of attacking football for all of 30mins and then let the mid field control slip, loose balls were siezed upon by L`pool players we started to give them space and time on the ball to compose themselves, that in turn gave them the impetus to run at us and we bottled it. Ist goal was a schoolboy´s stupid error, second was a wonder strike and the third,,,,,, well the back door was left well and truly open another schoolboy´s error and we got stuffed for it.
MR Mccarthy needs to instill in his players to tackle hard and fast cover the ground to the ball before the other side gets there, don´t let them turn on the ball, if they get beat in a tackle, get back and worry the guy with the ball, if not get back and cover.
    BASIC SCHOOLBOY STUFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ho!!! and by the way can our goal keepers throw a ball out to our players instead of hoofing it up which invariably leeds the to opposing team having posession. We could get 40% more posession if the goalkeeper didn´t hoof it. Posession makes control, if you control the game you have a better chance of winning.

SIMPLE SCHOOLBOY STUFF REALLY, IT AINT ROCKET SCIENCE.

Then, when we are relegated we will cash in on these players and the board and Fat Cat Moxey will be very happy with things.

Are you lot blind?? This club has no ambition whatsoever . They see us as a championship club that’s why they are happy to stick with Mad Mick.

When we go down, which we are odds on for relegation now, I honestly can’t see a team that is worse than us, we will have made absolutely no progress whatsoever under the 3 M’s. We are back to square one. The same as we’ve been in anyone of the last 20 odd years.

Yesterday he contributed abosolutely nothing to the job in hand which was
    a. to win three desperately needed points.
    b. to lead by example and
    c. to inspire his team mates & initiate creative opportunities.

All he did for 90 minutes was to play his usual non-inspirational sideways and backwards passing game, which is not only negative and boring, it´s down right disgraceful from a club captain. It smacks of a lack willingness to take responsibility, it smacks of a lack of confidence in his own play. The guy is either inept or he is scared, neither of which is helpful to a club second to bottom in the table. And before anybody writes on here that it´s not surprising if he lacks confidence considering some of the posts, get real. He gets paid a lot more money in a week than I do in a year, so no excuses for poor old Karl Henry, he should shape up or be shipped out, along with his useless manager.

We enabled the perfect headlines for so called King Kenny and I suppose Talk Sport won’t stop going on about it for a week. You didn’t know there was anybody there from Liverpool until they scored and then we had the usual corny you’ll never walk alone at the end – how sad was that?
I like Mick a lot but I’m very puzzled how a former ace defender like him can’t see that we need a top line central defender to hold us together along with another quality defender alongside. Winning against Chelsea, losing against Liverpool ..neither in itself defines the season or the team. Let’s keep a perspective.

Having said that, I do think Grace was accurate in pointing to how we were outrun in midfield and how wasteful the Hennessey hoof is if you haven’t got a Dougan to go on the end of it.

    63. Sue…..not sure if you’re for real or not but I will give you the benefit of the doubt. Why does everyone go on at Henry ? Because he cannot play in a 4-4-2 line up. He plays too deepand puts too much pressureon the defence. You’re right the midfield wasoverrun…..because Henry wasplayingtoo deep forcing the rest of the midfield to play too deep. This left oceans of space for Liverpool to play in. Because of this there was a complete diconnect between midfield and the front line. What’s more, with Henry’s negative play – always passing backwards – to the defence it was putting them under too much pressure hence the ‘hoof’ upfield hoping to find one of our frontmen. Not saying our defence was any good because at times it was woeful, but if you have your Captain continually playing backwards, what else do you expect ? One other point – How can you say Hunt had a bad day ? Were you at the game ? Some of his close control was awesome and it should have been Henry being substituted not Hunt. I’ve also said elsewhere that Milijas and Henry cannot play together. enry kills Millys game. Who would I rather have ? Milly every goddam time.

The point with Henry,in my opinion was not his lack of creativity,we never get much of that anyway,it was his failure to do his basic job, the holding midfield role.He should have been picking up the runs of Meireles. For the crucial second goal there were two Liverpool players totally unmarked on the edge of the box. But this was a management fault,it was unrealistic to expect Henry to play two games in less than a week after his injury. Also we never should have played just two in midfield,or at least changes should have been made when it was obvious we were being over run in midfield. This one Mick was down to you,not good enough just to blame defensive errors.

Wolves got stuck as usual without creating too much.
For Wolves, Fletcher had his best game and looked the part.
New boy’s second cross was Beckhamesque. Had pace, direction and was early. More of that, please. Pity about the miskick in front of goal. Brilliant ball by Fletcher.

I did think at one time i was watching a Basketball game. Have never seen so many headers in a game. The tactict was for Liverpool to boot it up and then catch us on the break. At one time I really believed that Fletcher would be an handful for most of the game-Our forwards seemed to be ontop of one another and at one time Hunt and Matt were playing on the same side–The whole game seemed disjointed no real formation apparent.

Why play Henry when Dave Jones had done okay for us in his absence-Did not make sense. At the Start of the game i believed we were up for it and the South Bank were really vocal – But that fell away when the first goal went in.

Relay our defence has no class or belief if MM signed an experienced defender or two then things might change.

Really can make no constructive comment the Championship seems nearer and nearer–

Lets hope the Cup gives MM time to re-group if we play like that against Arsenal and Man. U God Help us.

Anyone concerned that Morgan and his lapdogs wouldn’t be that concerned if Wolves went down. There has been no urgency in buying players that could keep us up during the transfer window thus far.Maybe they have worked it all out financially and have come to the conclusion that being a ‘yoyo’ club like Albion is a better option in terms of what it will cost them.If we are relegated then they could generate upto fifteeen million pounds maybe more in transfer fees and still retain a nucleus of a squad to challenge for promotion next season, this plus the parachute payments and smaller wage bills probably looks quite good on paper.Maybe all us poor fans are being taken for granted, numpties to the last man!

I read a lot of the posts on here. Im so glad im not the only one depressed here.
i still stick with my earlier post that Henry was more effective and kept the ball better than most did from what i saw on tv.So if you went to the match maybe you see it differently but one thing is for sure Henry is not an attacking midfielder and never will be.

I think willenhall wolf 119 is spot on. When do have a championship team and have to play really well like we did against man city just to compete. When were a little off like we were at liverpool we get easily beaten.

I now think we along with two from west ham, wigan, WBA, Brum, fulham and blackpool are likely to go down.

I just cant see how we can put a run of 3-4 games to turn it around seeing how inconsistent the team is and how hard they have to work due to the lack of flair and quality in the squad. without new blood I think were doomed. i mean experienced players not hot prospects like hamill whose time will come in 1-2 years

I wish Mick well and really hope he proves me wrong as I’m desperate for this club to stay up.

However if we dont stay up I dont think Micks posiiton will be as secure as he thinks

If Villa owner randy lerner realises now he should listened to oneil and spent money in the summer .
Maybe When morgan realises that micks win record in the prem is poor and will not get any better and he is therefore not the man to secure a regular prem status which will hamper his redevelopment plans maybe things will change here too.

I notice a lot of people have commented on Hammil. It’s fairly obvious I would have thought that he’s been bought to replace Jarvis. Ditto this guy from dundee who will replace Doyle.

Mick said there would be no Fire Sale. Well, selling two players isn’t a fire sale.

Believe me, when relegation comes, which it surely will, the real reason we bought those two players will be seen.

This club has no ambition. We haven’t bought anyone to help us stay in this division. We’ve bought players for next year, when we are in the Championship.

So, Hammil isn’t a ‘Prospect’ he is the future of this club.

The way we kicked off showed how McCarthy thought to approach the game, thinking Liverpool would crumble under an ‘up and at them’ policy. The opposite was true and they were in fact dirtier and more physical than Wolves. Despite Stearman & Berra doing ok we still conceded 3. Ward was at fault for the first and Berra the second with a weak header that went nowhere. Same old same old in defence. And Henry offers no protection at all. The only attacking play he breaks up is our own! Did we miss him when he was out? Wins against Liverpool, Sunderland and Birmingham would suggest not.

Everyone is entitled to a bad day on the pitch – shame so many of ours have them so often and at the same time.

Blame though has to firmly sit with McCarthy. As some posters have said here, Dalglish won it with his tactics and our maangement team didn’t have the ability to sense that this was the case for the whole 90 minutes. Our way of trying to bypass the five man midfield was to hoof it so that our renowned target men, Doyle and Fletcher, could go for the 50/50 ball against the midgets that are Skrtel and Agger. And this is despite our best performances recently coming by trying to play the passing game.

None of our midfielders or defenders had a clue which of Liverpool’s midfielders to pick up when they attacked. In the first half, we were lucky not to concede on two occasions when Milijas and Henry just watched players run past them. For MM to say that trying to play offside was our downfall is ignoring the bleeding obvious. We could have and should have already been a couple of goals down before they scored their first.

And then for the second goal, we held a line of four defensive players level with Torres when the free kick was taken. When the feeble attempted headed clearance made it a few yards, there was a line of 3 Liverpool players unmarked – about 5 yards goal side of our midfielders. So it’s pretty obvious that McCarthy et al had failed to spot the one key tactic that Liverpool were using to over-run us.

Games can change and run away from you very quickly. Im not anti Henry, but I do think this was at least 1 game too early for him. 8 weeks out and he’s up against an improving 5 man Liverpool midfield – thats harsh, and he and the team could may be have been protected from what happened.

442 wasn’t a problem for me. The idea, a la Liverpool away, is to be more attacking and push them further up field, however Henry was not up to it being back from injury so soon.

Still, thought we pressed them well second half and it was a wonder goal that really took the game away from us. Newbie looked good, and liked the way he drifted in to the striking areas when the ball was on the opposite side of the field.

Like every Gold-blooded Wolves fan, I love this club with all my heart. That doesn’t mean blind loyalty, though, nor does it mean Mick (or anyone else employed by WWFC) is above criticism. The fact is, this season is a bloody shambles and, barring a miracle, it’s going to result in another spell in the Championship.

God knows how some fans can sit idly by, praising the virtues of MM (if not all three MM’s!) because the AMATEURISH DROSS we’ve been served for large portions of this season is not only unacceptable, but an affront to the fans.

Still, Mick got us up, so he’s God to some -and probably will be forever more. Well, I’m grateful, too, but he can’t live on yesterday’s successes forever. Besides, Mick got PAID to succeed, not fail. Anyone would think Mick did his good deed for free, judging by some of the OTT plaudits he receives.

As for Morgan and Moxey, well, how can you two just sit there, say nothing and allow our imminent decline to continue? Happy with the Premier League rich pickings, are we, lads? Happy to take loyal Wulfrunians for mugs as they shell out their hard-earned dough, following the Wolves? I can’t come to any other conclusion because nothing else makes sense to me. Any other club’s Board wouldn’t have stood for this nonsense.

Watching our beloved club implode is painful, heartbreaking -but was needless, too. I guess it’s the price we have to pay for sticking with the Premier League’s worst-ever Manager (official) while the club is administered by the most easily-pleased top brass, too. Thanks, MM’s, for taking us one step forward while taking three steps back. You couldn’t make it up.

We played 4.4.2 against a team playing 4.5.1. To compound the issue we try to play an offside trap against a fast, world class striker. We then decide that it’s all Henry’s fault because our midfield was over-run. Morgan’s legacy to this club will be the new stadium, this team will go down through lack of investment, lack of ambition, some appalling buys and a shocking lack of tactical knowledge from our manager. We don’t want a new ground we want to stay in the Premiership. I think that puts most fans at odds with the owner.

your gordon ramsey principle cannot be applied to football as the owner will only invest the minimum amount in the club, so if we do get relegated he’ll get less than if we did stay up but still more than his total investment which currently stands at 48 million.

so all the complaining by die hard loyal fans who pay hard earned money about rubbish players, managers and performances, will never make any difference as the owner will just get fed up and sell to the highest bidder.

if you dissagree with this point , thats fine but only man utd chelsea and recently man city have spent serious money on players so there is not any surprise when the trophies always end up at those clubs.

Ebanks blake in the few games he has played has scored 4 goals and is in the right positions to get chances so in my eyes i would play ebanks and fletch over doyle. Its not people being fickle its just people wanting form players on the pitch and players who arent peforming on the bench. As for morgan i think he has been great for the club but somewhere along the line we have to do better with regards to transfers and attracting players to the club. Mick, though, is only competent as a Championship ‘chef’, so he’s well short of the Michelin award! That said, I don’t take pleasure in complaining because I respect the bloke and actually like him as the decent, hard-working fellah he is. However, at best, he’s restraining my club’s progress. At worst, he’s taking us backwards. I want progress, not stagnation, Mr. Morgan. Mick just doesn’t cut it at Premier level, and that’s surely obvious to anyone who doesn’t allow blind loyalty and sentiment to cloud their Gold-tinted vision (or, in Morgan’s case, red-tinted vision?).

Bazza (post 175), your “old pals act” view of the three M’s saved me the trouble of saying the same thing. It was bang on the money and indicative of just how cushy things have become for Mick McCarthy.

171 – Yes, amazingly, Mick is “happy” with his squad. If a nosedive return to the Championship is his declared intention, then yeah, I guess he would be happy. I aint, though.

167 – Mac, you’re right: We probably ARE wasting our time registering our dissatisfaction on here. Best to just see it as a chat over a pint down your local. It won’t change anything, but it sure feels better getting it off your chest, lol…

I agree with what your all saying about ambition but i think the most important thing is to stay in the premier league this year and next. and to achieve that i think mick will do fine. But once we have consolidated ourselves as a premiership club (we are not a premiership club yet) then it is time to move on. But right now, were not as big as you all think we are.

What a good idea, why don’t you do that very thing, that would make it about 100 whingers max, then the other 24,900 ‘supporters, could identify you & deal with you accordingly.

You’re whats known as the noisey minority.

If you must make noise, be positive & support the club!!!!
