Mick McCarthy eyes Wolves gems
Saturday 22nd January 2011, 11:30AM GMT.
Mick McCarthy has hinted Wolves will snub big- money buys this month and continue hunting bargain gems.
Wolves snapped up their first signing of the January transfer window this week with the £500,000 arrival of Adam Hammill from Barnsley.
The signing of Hammill – who has been guaranteed a debut against his former club Liverpool today – was very much in keeping with the club’s tried-and-trusted policy of bringing in young and hungry talent.
And while fellow relegation scrappers Villa have already splashed out the best part of £30m in their bid to stay up, McCarthy insisted Wolves won’t be following suit as he pulled up the drawbridge to big-money signings.
“We’re not going to spend £24m on someone,” said the boss. “We would have to spend a hell of a lot of money or be very fortunate to get better than we’ve got – that’s the upshot of it.
“We spent in the summer, and the other side of that is we’re in the bottom three and signing players in our position is easier said than done.”
The core of Wolves’ squad is still very much the players brought in cheaply during the first two years of McCarthy’s reign and the manager believes that’s still the way forward.
“I still think it’s possible,” he said. “Our’s have been the lifeblood of the club, there’s no doubt about that.
“Yes, we’ve spent bigger money and seen the quality of players such as Ronald Zubar, Nenad Milijas, Stephen Hunt, Kevin Doyle and Steven Fletcher, but the ones who got us promoted and kept us up are the ones who didn’t cost us a great deal and were young and hungry.
“The majority of them are still in the team and around the squad – Wayne came out of the academy, Kevin Foley, Stephen Ward, George Elokobi, Karl Henry, David Jones, Matt Jarvis and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.
“I remember signing a lot of these players and the feeling was ‘who?’ because they came from Luton, Stoke reserves, or, in Michael Kightly’s case, Grays and within two weeks, he was superb.
“But we have to keep doing that because these lads have been the lifeblood of the club.”
“They’ve got us promoted, they kept us up and they’ll do it again.
“Others have done it: Charlie Adam at Blackpool is fairly ripping it up, Roger Johnson and Scott Dann – who we were in for at the time – have done likewise.
“Birmingham paid good money for them so maybe they’re not the best two examples, but they were still taken out of the Championship and they’ve become really good centre-backs in the Premier League.”
Wolves host Liverpool at a sold-out Molineux this lunchtime in optimistic mood after four wins in eight, and eight goals in two games having given Manchester City a real scare before losing 4-3 last weekend.
And McCarthy believes the fans’ optimism is well placed.
“I think the optimism is justified as well because of recent results and recent performances,” said the boss.
“There’s been a really good feeling about the place.
“There is a sense of optimism – and so there should be.
“You can look at league position, or you can look at performances and results.
“Balance it off, and the way we’ve been playing and the results we’ve had says our league position won’t stay that way.
“We had a really tough start to the season, and I’m not saying we’re going to go rocketing up the league, but we’ll be out of the bottom three at the end of the season.”
Wolves are still without Dave Edwards after the midfielder, who recovered from his hamstring injury, went down with a bug.
And McCarthy said fellow hamstring victim Sylvan Ebanks-Blake is expected to return in the FA Cup fourth round tie at home to Stoke next Sunday.

What a strange two weeks it has been since our last game. I haven’t looked over my neighbour’s fence with as much interest since Pamela Anderson moved in next door and regularly used her trampoline, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.

What Mick is saying is Wolves are doing it on the cheap or his 19th place team is really a 5th place team in disguise.

firstly i would like to welcome adam hammill to the club and i am sure he will get the backing of the fans and the way the team are playing we will stay up the credit must go to mick for going to 4-4-2 against the top teams keep it up wolves

i dont think mick has set the world alight with any of his signings, dont think top players will come BECAUSE of mick,we seem to keep talent on the bench rather than leave out average championship players out of the team.fletcher on the bench in preference to ward, and why has bia been given an opportunity before now and im sorry hammil ! how many more players for the same position when anyone can see we need fullbacks.

Hamill seems a good player. Mick will soon alter that, when he puts him on the bench for months on end. So much for you lot saying you’re a moneybags club. Ha,Ha,Ha,Ha,Ha, Haa. JACK the HAT.

Unfortunatley i cant see this policy keeping us up. We need defensive reinforcements ASAP. Good ones will cost money thats the way it goes.

its about time mick stopped playing his favourites and started thinking about the fans and the club by playing the players in proper positions and teaching them to score or buy a proper striker to do it. cum on wolves we can do it.

Mmm. Without spending big money on quality defenders, Wolves can kiss the Greed League goodbye.
3 more goals conceded!! The black clouds are gathering over Wolvo now…..

Stearman, elokobi, ward, hennessey – thats why we are in the bottom three. Hammill and Griffiths are not going to keep us up. At Sunderland the manager had no money, £33m later whats the reason this time? Let me tell you, the defence has two players who are not championship standard. Eight centrebacks later, craddock is still the best – no need to say more.

1st of all i wud like to say welcome to the club adam hammill u r going to be great for the club, but it just goes to show that the board and the manager are signing players ready for next season in the championship which is where we are going to be unless we sign sum top defenders as well. it’s all well and good signing players who can proved the chances but what about stopping the chances at the other end seems to me we are doing exactly the same as west brom did and have a shoe string budget in our second season. Things need to change and quick otherwise our dreams of a new stadium go down the tube!!!!!

To misquote someone. you cannot be serious. Most of the Wolves squad were they to be on the transfer list would remain there. There are better players in the Championship than at Wolves.Nothing will get better until those in charge get a dose of reality, there is insufficient quality in the squad,it can only be bought.Gems wont save the Wolves and as with most things in life you get what you deserve.

We all know we were in for Johnson and Dann. But what about Charlie Adams? We were linked before he joined Blackpool,in a number of papers. If we did miss out on him,we dropped a real clanger. We were also heavily linked with Carroll before we signed that cake maker from Vienna. Also let us not forget we also missed out on the kid McCarthy who went to Wigan. We are not going to sign them all,but lack of quality was an issue against Liverpool especially in midfield and if only we had someone to win the ball in the air upfront. We need to make something happen in the last few days of the transfer window, otherwise it looks like curtains.Relegation will matter to the vast majority of Wolves fans, but how much to Messrs Morgan and Moxey.

which is why we will go down

Mick, Mick, Mick : please, please, please……..BUY A QUALITY CENTRE HALF AND CENTRAL MIDFIELDER!!! That’s all I wanted for Christmas, but now it’s January you are running out of time. Spend decent money on two quality young players from another premiership team. Surely man u, Liverpool, Chelsea, arsenal and man city have some gems
