Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Ronald Zubar has won over Molineux
Friday 21st January 2011, 9:10AM GMT.
Wolves blogger Tim Spiers can see a new cult hero forming on the terraces as the Premier League season rolls on – ‘the lovable Frenchman’ Ronald Zubar.
It’s been a pretty good this week at Molineux, all told, not something we’ve been able to say too often this season.
Last Saturday’s game at Man City threw up so many positives I came away from the game feeling unusually satisfied with a defeat.
If you put the slightly haphazard defending against the most expensively-assembled squad in history to one side, there really wasn’t much to moan about.
We had outplayed City – as in genuinely out passed them, not defended for our lives – for most of the first-half, before Carlos Tevez breathtakingly turned on the style to blow us away after the break.
But our stirring late fight-back had the title contenders on the ropes in their own backyard and twice we came close to snatching a famous point.
Inevitably most of Monday’s press focused on City’s title credentials or their wobbly defending, but I felt we deserved real credit, not least for being the first side to score three at Eastlands this season.
Then, on Tuesday, we carried on our new-found goalscoring prowess into the FA Cup, unexpectedly smashing five past Doncaster.
Wolves clinically dispatching of a lower league side in the cup is about as rare as a jolly episode of Eastenders, but we got the job done in style.
Usually these nights are drab, miserable affairs when we struggle to create any decent chances and end up either losing in 90 minutes or winning on penalties.
In fact, the last time I can recall us winning one so handsomely would be back in 1998 when Steve Bull scored a hat-trick against Barnet.
The good week continued on Thursday, when the club announced that this year’s Early Bird prices have been frozen.
Well, hardly fantastic news as it’s still a huge amount of money to pay and a cheeky reduction would have gone down very nicely.
But, with a stadium redevelopment around the corner, the club could easily have increased what they are charging and I, for one, was fearing another price hike.
Finally the week was polished off when Adam Hammill signed from Barnsley to become our first capture of the January window.
Hardly the marquee signing some were craving, but it fits very much in the mould of players who have joined the club in recent seasons in terms of age, stage of development and price.
We have a shortage of out and out wingers in the squad and Hammill should provide good competition for Matt Jarvis.
Ironically he could make his debut against his boyhood club Liverpool on Saturday, a game we go into in the unusual position of being favourites.
I was chatting to a Liverpool-supporting friend of mine – from London, obviously – this week and he concurred that his side were underdogs, although he fancied Fernando Torres to enjoy a prolific afternoon against our “dodgy defence.”
In particular he drew attention to one Ronald Zubar, saying our lovable Frenchman – my words, not his – had a ‘mare against Liverpool in the Champions League for Marseille a couple of seasons ago, and that Zubar was one of the worst defenders in the division.
Rest assured, I took him to task.
But his name doesn’t necessarily come to the fore when talking about our most productive players. Kevin Doyle, Matt Jarvis, Nenad Milijas, Karl Henry and Jody Craddock tend to receive those accolades.
However, Zubar adds something that you can’t measure in numbers or statistics – listing his goals, assists, tackles won, pass percentage and so on wouldn’t do the man justice. No, he brings a boundless, infectious enthusiasm to the team that is difficult to put a value on.
About 15 months ago such a scenario seemed unlikely, with Zubar initially threatening to become the new Isaac Okoronkwo as he remained sat on the sidelines, seemingly struggling to adapt to life in England.
Then came a surprise debut at Everton and it wasn’t long before we saw we had a bit of a character on our hands.
Even before kick-off, Zubar was geeing up the away end, applauding the supporters and pumping his fists, all with a beaming smile on his face.
Then a few minutes into the game he cut in from the right flank and lashed a 40-yard shot miles over the bar with his left foot. Kevin Foley, he wasn’t.
But then that’s what I love about him, his cavalier attitude and willingness to try something different is a welcome antidote to the safety-first mentality of many of our players. He rampages down that right flank with all the subtlety of a sexually frustrated rhino at the start of the mating season.
Sometimes this mentality leaves us exposed down the left flank, other times it pays off.
Witness the marauding run and pass to Adlene Guedioura for our second goal against Sunderland last season, the dart bomb forward to score against West Ham at Upton Park, or the 35-yard screamer which yielded a corner for the winner against Chelsea a few weeks ago.
When we signed him from Marseille it seemed he was being primed to replace Craddock at centre-half, but Zubar has been so effective at right back that it’s difficult to imagine Kevin Foley getting the nod there if both players are fully fit.
Foley is a fantastic footballer is the Denis Irwin mould, very rarely putting a foot wrong but unlikely to provide a game-changing spark.
It would be a searching dilemma for any manager to choose between the pair and Mick McCarthy values both Zubar and Foley so highly that he often finds a place in the side for both of them, usually putting Foley in midfield.
Zubar may have been one of the unsung heroes in our survival campaign last season but, to me, it was evident just how important he is to us when he was injured for the start of this season.
We missed his passion, his drive, his willingness to lump it 40 yards into the stands when needed, or sprint forward into midfield and push everyone up.
Then came a welcome return against Sunderland and, by coincidence or not, we have won five games from the nine games he’s featured in since.
You can see how much the game means to him with his melodramatic reactions when a shot goes awry, or when he celebrates wildly with the fans if we’ve won.
Like Jelle van Damme, it took Zubar a while to settle in England, with a wife and baby left at home in France.
But, worse than van Damme, he didn’t know the language but, typical of the man, he got his head down and learned how to cope.
Yes, he’s occasionally error-prone and displays all the grace and poise of a production of Swan Lake starring Eamonn Holmes and Rusty Lee.
His positioning is suspect and he often strays from the defensive line, but he more than makes up for this with his whole-hearted commitment.
Personally, I wouldn’t want him any other way.

I think Zubar has been a quality signing. The dilemma is whether he should play in the centre and put Foley right back. There is no doubt that we need pace in the centre and he is good in the air. The problem would be that we would miss his marauding runs. However, although some people have piped up for this, he is not a left back. We need to sign someone for this position, as I very much doubt that Elokobi can sustain the level of Chelsea performance – when he was a stand out performer.
As for Liverpool tomorrow, we maybe slight favourites but they still have Torres and our defence need to be at the Blues, Chelsea and Liverpool away level and not some of the other recent performances!

Yeah. He’s not very good though, is he?
But I don’t care. In ten and a half hours I will breeze into the Newhampton, the nightmare that is London life will be behind me, and all will be well.

Nice article. Ronald is a good signing and he certainly brings something extra to the team. He has great confidence and a great heart. Coupled with all the guile and effort he puts in he is a Wolves hero and I am glad we have him.

Good article to let us know that a player needs time to adjust to the new surroundings. It is also the same thing to all those players who helped Wolves clinching the 1st Division Championship and they are still learning how to cope with the demands of Premiership. No doubt players having little experience in the Premiership are bound to make silly mistakes but it is in playing constantly that errors are erased. As to the Tevez goal I am of the opinion that it was not a great one as people would think. It is rather a very stupid one considering that three Wolves players allowed him to run all the way without one of them attacking him. Even an academy player would have scored against Wolves if he is allowed to run with the ball and move into the penalty area. Finally I would like to tell you that Arsenal this season scored three against Man. City at Eastlands when they won there and Wolves were the second team to follow suit. Hope Wolves will learn how to defend and not let players run all the way freely to their area in which case we invite troubles and dangers. Let’s hope the manager rectify these silly errors that have cost us lots of points.

PeteNuts. Not very good? Did you seem him brush Cole out of the way against Chelsea? Dominate in the air at Liverpool? Fantastic player who we will struggle to hold on to if he keeps playing like he is. And young too.

“Usually these nights are drab, miserable affairs when we struggle to create any decent chances and end up either losing in 90 minutes or winning on penalties.”
Winning on penalties?! I think not, we’re worse than England!

Zubar is a quality player and he looks to have solved our left back problem too. He loves to get forward and I love the way he utmuscled Ashley Cole went past Lampard and went for goal from 40 yards and Cech made a world class save. He loves the Wolves and rest assured we love him too.
I am sure your Liverpool supporting friend obviously forgot the game 3 weeks ago when Zubae dominated in the air and had Kuyt in his back pocket?
I read yesterday that Mick may start playing Hunt at left back and Hammill and Jarvis out wide? Interesting.

Love his enthusiasm to bits………. and what about that goal he scored against Palace in the cup. Nearly took the roof off the net in the North Bank.

ZUBAR ZUBAR ZUBAR!!!!!
Me and my mate were the first to come out with that chant at a Friendly v Port Vale. That night he made a terrible defensive mistake but got up of the floor and went after the ball and won it back. From that moment on we always knew he had the desire. Now he has the skill and ability to go with it!
Awesome signing and as important to us as Doyle is in my view.

@ Jake
Being dominant in the air against Liverpool is like beating up a midget.
Anyway, I don’t care, because it’s now ten hours until Newhampton O’Clock. Man, I love that pub.

First time poster, i have read the blogs but have never joined in with the debate as most weeks it descends into brainless name calling and moronic arguments.
However your blog Tim has virtually forced me to respond.
Firstly, to come out with comments such as satisfied to lose, and a pretty decent week based on beating a lower league side and signing a player who we havent seen yet smacks of both naivety and a basic lack of football knowledge.
The grammar of the article hints at the lack of iq.
Then comes a somewhat sychophantic view of one of our average players. So many subjects to cover and the article goes on and on about Zubar.
Tim please go back to the type of article you were writing a few weeks ago, or are the E+S restricting your choice of material?
Sorry to sound so negative but we are Wolves, one of the greatest teams in the world, so i dont ever want to read that we are happy with losing!!
11. And your post smacks of Tescobag. Still upset that Carew didn’t want to go to you?
Another GREAT piece of news is that Adlene Guerdoira is back in training. I really rate this guy and his versatility is also very important to our squad, lots of pace, good passing range, strong in the tackle and a rifle of a shot.
I think Hunt could do a job at left back and he has great crossing ability and apparently he played there for Reading in their Premier League campaign?
10. Have you just turned 18 and can finally buy Beer? You also are another Albion fan with your constant negativety. Is Torres small? No. Kuyt? No. NGog? No.
Isn’t Torres suspended tomorrow? All well and good playing very well against the top teams, but you can’t win all those games and the important thing is to pick up enough points from the lesser games too. Otherwise we could be relegated and bemoaning poor defending that was never solved. Wins and decent performances against expensively assembled sides will be a distant memory if we are making our first appearance in Brighton’s new stadium next season.

RAGING WOLF:WOW man your a tough cookie or cookies rolled into one….I find your post a little strange, seems some of the wording is strongly suggessting, that you are contradictory in your views and seem to be another Sir lippy on these posts, who also seems to have all the answers to all debates or reports.

That is just the reaction i expected to get, read my post again and you will see your moronic assumption i am an Albion fan only proves my point. I thought this was a blog for football debate with like minded fans, but no you have proved it is here to serve the happy clappers, and anyone else who attempts to disagree gets shot down with name calling and insults.
Dont bother replying i wont bother again you have proved what i suspected.

Zubar has become one of the mainstays of the team. When he first played for the club he looked to me a very raw recruit and was prone to making mistakes which negated all the good work he did in a game.
Last season I saw him at Hull and Old Trafford giving away needless penalties. However, since then he has definately improved and probably worth at least double what Wolves for him. Perhaps the coaching staff deserve some credit for the improvement.
If we can play as well as we did at Anfield I don’t see why the result should’nt be any different. Liverpool have a lot of good players in their side but few exceptional ones. With Gerrard out the main threat is obviously Torres, but even he does’nt seem to be the player he once was.

Great post – apart from the fact he quotes “not least for being the first side to score three at Eastlands this season.” Sorry to disappoint but Arsenal won 3-0 at Eastlands!

What an ironic name, since, on the evidence provided, nobody will ever laugh at anything you ever post, ever.
I think my point was that Liverpool are rubbish and not fit for purpose. As somebody who is apparently also rubbish and not fit for purpose, I’m sure you can relate.
And if you’re in any way dissing the Newhampton then… Well, don’t.

Very very good player.
Though being a Wolves fans I must be a little hyper critical, coz as you know we are never happy.
2 points.
In the 2 seasons we have had him, it has taken him about 3 months to ‘get up & running’ for the on going campaign.
Also whilst he is superb going forward, I wish he would remember he is a defender & get back quicker, that’s where their 3rd goal come from last week a move broke down on the edge of their box involving him & Hunt & they hit us on the break & he didn’t get back, Toure actually made his run past Zubar & ended up scoring, if he had tracked him he may not have scored.
As I said, I’m being hyper-critical & we are a much better side with him fit, results prove that, but if he can put the above right he’d be the perfect FB, though probably not a Wolves player.
2 – 0 tommorrow – Doyle to get both goals.

Nothing offensive its just that Pete is always VERY NEGATIVE and always goes on about the NEWHAMPTON. This a Wolves discussion forum. Perhaps a NEWHAPTON appreciation page on facebook would be more suitable for you?
As for Raging Wolf, he is blatently a Baggie. Did you want to lose to Doncaster? Why are you being negative about Hammill when he hasn’t even got on the pitch yet?
I have thought since we signed him that he is an attacking CB, that’s his natural position.
When we have an acomplished RB in Foley I cannot for the life of me see why McCarthy keeps playing him there.
He is suspect at RB in the last few yards of the pitch, where he does not close the winger down and too many crosses come into the box.
Otherwise a very good player

@27
Firstly, shut up.
Secondly, I think you’ll find that I am negative when negativity (or “negativety” as it is apparently spelled) demands, and positive when positivity demands. I’m odd like that, it’s called having a healthy balance of opinions and the wherewithal to back them up with reasoned arguments.
You can never say too much about the Newhampton (or “Newhapton” as it is apparently spelled). It’s the best pub in the world. However, their door policy is quite stringent so I wouldn’t bother. Refusal can often offend.

Raging Wolf – Your talking about mindless insults, yet your very first post contains insults, including calling him naive, and having a lack of iq.
Then you go on to critisise someone for critisising your oppinion, yet thats exactly what you did about this article. Talking about the article, Tim clearly states that he took positives away fromt the game, at the end of the day, we wasnt expecting anything against man city anyway, so we have to loook for the positives, and if you cant see the positives in scoring 3 goals against what was the best defence in the prem, then maybe you should go and support man utd.
I hope we can beat Liverpool again, and then maybe go on a winning run for a few games against the big teams, leaving us in a better position when the real test starts against the teams around us.

11)Raging Wolf.
If you can spare a moment up there on your High Horse.
Tim didn’t say happy with defeat, he said satisfied. There’s a big difference.
….and the way you dismiss Wolves Cup win over a “lower league side”. It seems you claim to have football knowledge, so put down your dictionary and open your Big Book of Football. Look at the history of the FA Cup and the giant killing acts by “lower league sides”. THAT is what the FA Cup is all about my first posting friend, that’s what’s made it the wonderful competition it still is.
Look at that Leeds Arsenal crowd. The Cup is NOT dead.

Considering that he was very unpopular among the Marseille supporters, he must simply love
the chants of “ZUBAR ZUBAR” from the stands.
What I really like about Milijas and Zubar, is the fact that (unlike others), they didnt moan, or returned home, when things were hard at first. They worked hard, Milijas on his fitness, Zubar on his language, and are now performing quite well.
Other foreign players coming to England, could watch and learn from that.

I agree the enthusiasm and commitment Zubes brings to the party is such an asset. Not sure about left back, but, too early to say. Love those marauding wing runs he makes, but, would worry about mistakes in the centre back role. Stearman and Berra have improved in the clanger department. (Hope I haven’t said that too soon, I don’t think Torres will score a goal like the one Tevez got )
Learnt a few things on here today. The Tescos can’t keep away, the beer in Newhampton seems worth a try and Rockin Berries are comin’ to town.
Worry about Liverpool even without SG. Hopefully a sneaky 2-1 to us.

Well done Zubar, now for Liverpool.
Liverpool have had 9 games away this season.
They have Won 1 and Lost 8 scoring 8 Goals and letting in 21 so WHY are we concerned about playing Liverpool.

So go out there and do your job and make that played 10, Won 1 Lost 9.

Do Wolves fans really think that Zubes is that good, we need 2 seasons out of him to see his true worth. Matt Jarvis, highly overrated and if we can sell him soon for a fair amount, then that would be good. Lets hope the lad we have just got is a speed merchant and replaces him.
Hoping for a good result tomorrow.

Zubar is not the World’s best defender, but that is true of many famous multi-millin pound fullbacks (Ashley Cole, Roberto Carlos, Glen Johnson etc.) I just love the guy for his enthusiasm and will to win.
Raging Wolf, I would recommend that you look into the use of subordinate clauses and the use of the comma before criticising anybody else’s IQ. For a guy who obviously thinks that the level of debate is purile, not that I disagree, that was quite an impressive effort to raise the tone!

The further up the pitch Hunt plays the better. He would be wasted playing as a full back.
If the worst happens and we are relegated, very possibly Jarivis and/or Hunt may be sold. Much better to have their replacement already at the club with 7 months McCarthy style indoctrination under their belt.. That is one of the reasons why a player like Hammil has been signed, as well as obviously strengthening a relegation fighting squad.
Zubar needs to stay where he is, at right back. We are a much better team both defensively AND going forward when he’s playing, and I’m a massive Kevin Foley fan!
So why not big him up in a blog, Raging Wolf? Has your dog just died, or something? As for critisizing another Wolves fan’s I.Q. (not iq, by the way) over grammar, I would suggest the average football fan’s I.Q. is hovering round the 100 mark at best! A crowd’s I.Q. is said to be the square root of the sum of it’s parts… Doesn’t mean they don’t know their football!
