Adam Hammill guns for former club

Liverpool fan Adam Hammill has set his sights on proving a point to the Reds for Wolves after admitting how lucky he is to be facing his old club.

The 22-year-old winger, who signed a three-and-a-half-year deal yesterday, joined the full squad as they returned to work in earnest for the visit of Kenny Dalglish’s side tomorrow.

Now Hammill has revealed how his return to the Premier League this week, after being released from Anfield in 2009, has reminded him not to waste his big chance.

He said: “I’ve been getting a load of texts congratulating me since the move.

“Some of the lads I knew at Liverpool are training to be PE teachers now and they’ve been saying ‘go and prove them wrong on Saturday’ and that’s what I’m aiming to do. One of my former team-mates, Besian Idrizaj, who went to Swansea, died of a heart attack.

“I think I’ve got a point to prove but it’s not about me, it’s about the team. When I left Liverpool I set myself a target to get back in the Premier League. It’s taken me 18 months but I’m delighted that I’ve got there now.

“It’s time now to set myself some new targets at my new club and one of them will be to turn Liverpool over tomorrow.

“I’m really confident Wolves are going to stay in the league. You can see the quality we’ve got here and some of the recent results – beating Liverpool and Chelsea having already beaten Manchester City – shows Wolves are a really good team.

“With a bit of luck and continuing those performances I’m sure we’ll be climbing the table.”

Hammill suffered relegation – and played in a Scottish Cup final – when on loan from Liverpool at Dunfermline and is determined not to sample that experience again.

He said: “Dunfermline got relegated but also got to the cup final losing narrowly to Celtic.

“I was 18 and that wasn’t a good time to taste relegation and that’s a feeling I don’t want to go through again in my whole career.

“Fortunately I’ve managed to avoid it so far and long may that continue.”

Hammill, who scored eight goals for Barnsley this season, could make Mick McCarthy’s squad for tomorrow’s sell-out clash against the Reds.

And the Scouser, who won the 2006 FA Youth Cup at Anfield, would love to make his debut against the team that released him.

He said: “I’m a Liverpool fan, so it’s ironic my first game here will be against them but exciting at the same time. I just can’t wait for the game and hopefully I can play some part of it.

“I know I’ve got to show what I can do to get in the team but first impressions are important, so I’m hoping to impress right from the start.””
