Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Wolves boss’ warning on Villa swoop
Tuesday 18th January 2011, 11:28AM GMT.
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has warned Villa’s sensational £30million splash is no guarantee to beating the drop – and insisted he still wants to add a midfielder.
Villa’s shock £24million swoop for Sunderland striker Darren Bent comes after the recent £6million arrival of midfielder Jean Makoun from Lyon.
But Villa are only out of the relegation zone on goals scored and the Wolves boss believes those two signings might not improve results immediately.
McCarthy said: “I’m sure the French midfielder will find out how difficult the Premier League is.
“Bent has been there, seen it and done it, but it doesn’t always work out that moves are seamless.
“He’s had a great time at Sunderland, but it didn’t go so well for him at Tottenham.”
McCarthy was as surprised as anyone as news emerged yesterday of the move for Bent.
He said: “Good for them. I wonder what Martin O’Neill is thinking?”
The manager did, however, admit Villa’s huge spend proves their intentions match the size of the club.
He said: “It strikes me as a really top club and spending that sort of money is what top clubs do. They expect to be near the top, not the bottom.
“Villa are having a few problems at the moment, but they have finished sixth three years running.”
As for his own plans to strengthen his squad, the Wolves boss – who enquired about Portsmouth’s Michael Brown and was linked with Lens’ Sidi Keita – wants a competitive midfielder in this month’s transfer window after being left livid at losing Steve Sidwell to Fulham.
McCarthy said: “Of course. We had Sidwell here on the running machine – that deal was as good as done.
“That’s what we’re looking at and we would still like something like that but if we can’t do it, we can’t do it.
“It doesn’t stop us looking elsewhere to take a chance to get players in.”
McCarthy also believes Villa’s move for Bent could be the big transfer to start the ‘domino effect’ of more transfers.
He said: “It could do. It will throw something up, no question.
“We’ll get to January 31 and there will be people running around, because something will come available that no one thought would.”

We’re really lucky to have Mick as manager, he’s humble and down to earth. Maybe he’s right when he talks about transfer fees matching the size of the club. We’re just not that big a club to be able to buy big name players.

I have never understood this talk that Dann and Sidwell agreed to sign but got calls elsewhere on their mobiles whilst having a medical. If they truly had agreed to sign, why not get them to sign on the dotted line conditional upon passing a medical afterwards. This is especially the case if you know other clubs are sniffing around.

What’s wrong with all you idiots always on about Moxey and Morgan?!
We’ve been in and around the relegation zone all season, we’re competing with established premier league clubs, our finances are managed sensibly so that we build solid foundations towards the top of the English league and don’t gamble everything before sliding out of existence. This is how a football club should be run.
We’re competing with reckless spenders, greedy players and bigger, more established clubs. Players don’t care about history. Fact.
They made a perfectly acceptable big money move for Keano last season but we weren’t even the right club for him!

I think you are spot on Mike Oxlong. I am so glad that Wolves were never bought out by oligarchs , sheiks or poultry farmers. I would rather follow a club which is prudently managed rather than one which overstretches itself like Pompey. Morgan is a successful business man and whilst I am sure he has taken risks , it is to his credit that he is not prepared to pay unrealistic wages and transfer fees . On Saturday, Wolves had a multi zillion pound team panicking. What a great feeling that is for a supporter. I know it is hard but I want to see players at Wolves who can willingly embrace MM’s values and attitude to teamness and want to play for him and Wolves. I don’t want to support a team where players like Rafael and Rooney shout in the face of the referee. There are some horrible characters about in the Premier League and some exemplary ones too of course. Unfortunately it is the former types that schoolboys and young men on Sunday mornings seem to want to copy.
What a contrast I saw last summer between a village cricket team’s behaviour and the village football team’s behaviour, only two fields away.

If the reports are accurate about the quality of player Wolves are being linked to, I have little doubt the Championship beckons. However perhaps the lack of quality players being interested in moving to Wolves is not because the money is not there. Perhaps it is more to do with how poorly McCarthy has managed to incorporate many of his previous signings into the first team.

Mick a clever response. But look at the situation Villa/Brum/west ham, are all looking to put up serious money to try to ensure they dont go down.
You know this puts serious pressure now on us along with/wigan,wba,fulham. We cant compete with money they are spending but we still need to strenghen the squad particularly in defence if we are to stay up.
Mick is right to a point when he says that the buys guarentee nothing. But Bent gets goals wherever he goes and every team outside the top 4 would take him now if they had the cash.
Mick your foreign signing have struggled to adapt to the premiership and the way you want them to play but quality players like van der vaat, silva, dzeko, tiote,ya ya toure, gyan and it hurts me to say odemwinge seem to be able to hit the ground running.

Very true Mick, Wolves are not a big club anymore. We havent been a big club for many years, we are a Championship club playing in the Premier League. We are in every way, shape and form a Championship Club from the top man down, we think like a CC, the manager at best is a Championship manager, managing in the PL,all the players are Championship players ,who play well in the PL, some matches but in others they look what they really are Championship class players at best, who are being expected to play way above their ‘capabilities’ every match, and its just to much of an ask for them. rich5wolves – we scored 3 goals against the leagues best defence, granted only one of the goals came from a striker, but i think the goals department is the least of our worries. Our defence is the main problem, but then again, we wont be playing against tevez and co every week, and our current defence have shown that on theyre day they can keep out the likes of torres and drogba. I still cant think of a premier league dfender that
a. would want to come to us
b. would improve our squad
c. our rivals would actually sell to us
which leaves a defender on loan from a top club, and all i can think of is lesscott who man city have already said they want to sell not loan.

Villa were promoted to the top flight the same season we were promoted from division 4 and won the Sherpa van trophy – the 1987/88 seaonn – 23 years ago. This is our third season in this league to Villa’s 23.
Frankly I would have been amazed if Villa hadn’t splashed the cash this January, as I will be if Liverpool don’t either!
Will either get velue for money, I wonder?

We won promotion as champions, doesn’t that make us a premiership club?
We avoided relegation last season, doesn’t that mean the we have earned the right to stay in the premiership and continue to be a premiership club??
There are still 16 league games to play and we are only a couple of points from safety, doesn’t that mean at the moment at least we are STILL a premiership club?
Even if we do go down, surely we WERE a premiership club for the last couple of years?
Or am I missing something here?

Sir Jack was let down by the likes of Colin Lee, Mark McGhee& Glen Hoddle, who wasted so much money,it was almost unbelievable!
When Morgan took over, Mick had a squad of around 16 players, because Hoddle didn’t tie players down.9 of them were out of contract & we also lost Lescott,Seol & Naylor.
What he as done in the past 4 years ( with the odd exception, well we all make mistakes )is highly commendable.

I think i would look forward to getting relegated as I have found the Premiership utterly boring as a league to support a non ‘top 4′ club. There are less games to look forward to, the refs are worse, there are less goals scored and unless you are Newcastle or in the ‘top 4′ you never get on the telly. We’ve had 20+ years of it so it’s the footballing and financial level we are at. It wouldn’t be the end of the world for us to get relegated as it would be for West Ham or Villa. However, I do think we can stay up this season and if we do I’m sure that would then prompt some marquee signings. UTW

Let’s be honest Villa won’t be going down even before this bid for Bent. They have too much in the tank.
If we play like we can we can survive the league it’s just about taking points from the teams around us we seem to battle harder against Liverpool, Chelsea but not so much against Wigan, West Ham.
Can i stop reading get Keane, get Lescott. Regardless of reading give Lescott 75k a week (on-loan) if we did that how would the other players feel they’d want the same. Or be annoyed a loanee was getting paid more money & rightly so be annoyed.
We’re a very fickle bunch and i do include myself in that when we’re doing well great when we’re not let’s make changes look at the teams that made changes this season. Blackburn – players want to leave. West Ham – can’t buy a win. Fulham – Struggling. Villa – Struggling. What if we made the change and it went wrong we’d want the new man out. MM should be assesed at the end of the season – IF we go down.

MIXED RESPONSE FROM FANS ON THIS…
My view is Wolves are doing the oposite to what ALL the other clubs round us & playing it safe with the long term future at the club in mind….
e.g
Andy hammill for 500k = bargain, for the future, wont want to leave if we go down, low wages. Same with that Dundee scots fwd.
W.Bridge 95k A WEEK
D.BENT 85K A WEEK….. & 24 MILLION FEE !
Bentley 70k A WEEK
Lescott 95k A WEEK
Keane 65k A WEEK
ALL HUGE RISK´S, any of these players flop, then Clubs are at risk, WEST HAM & BLUES reportedly are future Portsmouths.
ONLY thing is, the domino effect will release decent players to other clubs
eg Carew to Albion
THATS when WOLVES need to GET IN FAST, not with carew cus he´s past it but others…

“Turner swoops for two” read the back page headline of the Black Country Express and Star on Thursday November 20, 1986. This particular headline was met with scepticism and an air of confusion from fans of Wolverhampton Wanderers; the two in question were West Bromwich Albion, full back Andy Thompson and a young striker named Steve Bull. “It’s a big investment but we’ll get a long term return” said Graham Turner on the day of the signing and despite local journalist’ and supporters questioning the wisdom of signing two untried, untested reserve players from their bitterest rivals. Not even a confident Turner himself could have predicted the success of the Tipton born Bull.

He may have done better had he known our team when the season started, coached the players we do have corrected stupid defensive mistakes, played them in their true positions, made timely subs, known his true formation, not squandered millions on players who have never been given a proper chance.

LEE you can make all your views in caps but it does not make them sensible or valid.
We cannot go throwing around the money on players who won’t make a big difference. The 150k everyone is so hurt by has not been accepted by the administrators and it is for a club who are hurting and the boy is a prospect. This club produced strikers like Alan Gilzean, John Duncan and Andy Gray.
The 500k is for a player who is inconsitent but MM thinks he could sort tht.

I think we should be proud that this is well run club financially. But the mentality is championship through and through and there is a real lack of vision and ambition.
Sidwell apart look at the players we are being linked with?? Some of which are also linked to Blackpool who have the smallest budget in the prem and some championship sides. That says a lot.
I also think Mick doesnt buy players whose style will fit his system of play but gets them to change their natural game, like Miljas,Fletcher,Foley,Zubar and thats why it takes them so long to adapt.

Poorthorns – If somebody offered you £5,000 if you reached a certain target. Would your “ambition” to reach that target lead you to spend £8,000 to make sure you got there ?
That, is the very basic principle of what you’re asking and expect Wolves to do.

I’d suggest that a number, if not all of the players who have so far moved or are about to do so in this transfer window, are being brought on the strength of reputations alone.
Keane; Bridge; Sidwell; Bentley- none have been anything like notable forces at this level for several years now, if indeed, they ever were of any real note, certainly in the case of the latter two.
Like it or not (and we shouldn’t forget, for many years the supporters were longing for investment in talent and youth, after the stagnation of the Hayward era), the Club has established an ethos of hard work and careful husbandry, with an emphasis on stability at all levels. I think it admirable that modest investments such as those made in Ward, Henry, Foley and Jarvis, sees a return of several hundred games between the aforementioned players over the course of a promotion campaign and survival at a higher grade. I suspect we’ll retain fonder and more long lasting memories of these players in years to come than Blues, Villa, or West Ham fans will retain for their recent aquisitions.
Who’s to say we wouldn’t get similar returns on the likes of Griffiths and Hammill?

i really believe that some wolves fans are deluded!!!!!! the CLUB(i.e, owner, board, chief executive, manager) have a policy on transfers. This has been stated many a time by moxey, morgan and mick himself. they would rather, buy players, with less experiance, and nuture them and improve them!! we are not going to buy players for 8,9,10 million plus at this stage. morgan will,i have no doubt, sanction bigger transfers, when we are a more established premier club, but do you so called FANS, really want us to splash millions, and put the future of our GREAT CLUB in doubt!!!! have a long hard think pplllzzzzzzzzz. Also bent at 24 million, age 26, long term(i.e. 3-4 years) how much is he going be worth???? max 7-8 million, so what kind of business sense is that???? ok ul all come back with, he kept villa up etc, but our long term plan is to buy younger players who may, in long term, have sell on value i.e jarvis,ebanks-blake,foley,kightly(if ever fit) etc so just think where we are as a club and where more established clubs are like villa!!!

You dont have to spend big to find decent players, just look at Albion with the signings
of Odemwingie,Mulumbu,Ibanez,Jara,Morrison,

The trouble with Blues,Wolves, and Villa is
they dont have a decent scouting network which
is why Villa are having to pay over the odds

Here’s a thought.. we spent £2.5 million pounds on a left back. That signing didn’t work out.
Look how much money Liverpool paid for Collymore and Robbie Keane – they didn’t exactly work out either – and we know that they were good players!
Spending lots of money – even on acknowledged “good” players – doesn’t always work.
Remember when Newcastle were winning the league, spent a lot of money “improving” their team by buying in a very good player called Asprilla and lost a 12 point lead.
This team is “together” and recent results suggest we have turned a corner. Maybe not upsetting the applecart IS the way to play this? You don’t get awarded any extra league points for spending £20M+ in January…..!
