Wolves line up Adam Hammill bid

Barnsley claim Wolves have stepped up interest in winger Adam Hammill after revealing they are expecting an offer from Molineux.

Blackpool and Wolves would appear to be in pole position to sign the former Liverpool prospect, who turns 23 a week tomorrow.

Hammill has a £500,000 release clause in his contract, and, although Nottingham Forest have had a bid accepted, the winger has set his heart on breaking into the Premier League and is set to leave this month.

A Barnsley spokesman said: “We’ve had two offers for Adam, from Blackpool and Forest.

“We’re also expecting to get one from Wolves, although they have not made an official approach yet.”

Manager Mick McCarthy has had the winger scouted since before Wolves won promotion in 2009.

But Wolves are weighing up what to do with Matt Jarvis and Stephen Hunt as their current established widemen, while they also have David Edwards and loanee Geoffrey Mujangi Bia, as well as Michael Kightly, who is working his way towards full fitness.

Wolves were today staying tightlipped, with chief executive Jez Moxey saying: “We won’t say anything on transfers until we have something concrete to say.”

Hammill has upped his game with eight goals for the Championship side this season and believes he is now ready for the top flight.

He said: “If I leave it would have to be for a Premier League side. There are two Premier League clubs interested in me.

“But this is difficult because I’ve got to weigh up how much game time I might get if I move to a top-flight team.”

Speculation has also linked Wolves with Leicester striker Martyn Waghorn and Dundee United’s £1.5million-rated forward David Goodwillie.

Waghorn, who is 21 next Sunday, was a trainee during McCarthy’s time at Sunderland, who banked £3m when he made a permanent switch to Leicester last summer.

The Foxes forward impressed in last week’s friendly at Compton, but Leicester will wait for Darius Vassell to return from injury before allowing him out on loan.

I love mick as a manager but his ambition is very very poor

birmingham sign david bentley and on the verge of signing robbie keane

west ham have signed wayne bridge

and were about to sign some winger which we dont need as jarvis and hunt are top class and some striker from leicster!!!

im sure mick and jez said were going for prem experience this month!!

cant he see that our defence is very weak!

if we sign both of these its very very poor and an embarrasment!

I would try and sign Lescott on loan. Its rubbish to say we need a right sided centre half, yesterday Vidic and Ferdinand played for Man Utd, who are both right footed. Why can’t Lescott and Berra, who are both left footed, play together at Wolves?

I agree with Tom[no.1]except the I love mick bit.Why again are we looking in the lower reaches for players who will not be able to keep us up? McCarthy just hasn`t got a clue, never has had and never will have and it`s time Steve Morgan recognised that.Just look where Newcastle and Blackpool are and we were promoted from the Championship as Champions.Since then we have gone backwards.OK,the first season we struggled as was expected but we managed to stay up.There is no way we should be down at the bottom again if lessons had been learned but idiot Mccarthy obviously still hasn`t taken on board how to advance a team, don`t forget, his record at Sunderland proves that.Mr.Morgan,don`t let O`Niell go to West Ham,get him now while we still have a chance.

we desperatley need a centre back and left back asap, bentley looked average on sunday, wayne bridge looks like an average shane westley and robbie keane has rocked birmingham with his wage demands.

£90K a week for Wayne Bridge? £75K a week for David Bentley? Robbie Keane £65K a week?

Why would anyone with the best long term interests of Wolves at heart embark on a policy of financiual suicide?

Wolves have been signing good young players since Mick McCarthy arrived at the club and there is absolutely no reason to change this policy.

After speaking with the Man City fans Saturday, I would be very surprised if Lescott went anywhere this season, with Bridge leaving them he is next in line – particularly at LB behind Kolarov.
I dont think we will sign a LB this transfer window as MM has found our best option in Zubar, after a very encouraging performance – be it all the last twenty minutes on Saturday.

Great spirit and character YES but having LOST 13 games we are NOT good enough to stay up.

The teams around us are having a hard look at their squads and trying to bring in established premiership players to strenghen areas where they are weak but we arent.

Sorry Sir Billy but Tom is spot on. There is however a middle ground whereby we can go for one or two established quality premiership plays such as Robbie Keane (not Bentley) to just add more quality to our squad rather than people from Barnsley and Leicester. We could then compliment that with trying the young lad from Dundee say. Surely Robbie would prefer us over the Blues?

You only have to contrast our ambition with others to see that we now consider ourselves to be a lesser club than Bimingham, Stoke and West Ham; how sad is that!

Let’s just show a bit more ambition on building a premiership squad on a gradual basis as say Stoke have done rather than seeing the limit of our ambition being the Championship. Think Championship and we’ll end up back there.

We are now nearly three quarters of the way through the month and what have we got to show for it, not a lot. Is Mick’s ringing endorsement of his ‘current’ players his way of saying we are not getting any one else in?

These players just don’t want to be involved in a relegation battle and Bridge looked way out of his depth the other night as he has hardly played in 4 years.

I would love an experienced Premier League centre half and left back but we dont want some big time Charlie coming in messing up the squads morale and not pulling his weight on the pitch. We want players who have a point to prove and love the prospect of joining Wolves.

He was unmarked in a central position for his second goal. The Two Toures come straight through the middle too. Good grief, got dizzy typing that last sentence. The question is plain and simple. When are Wolves going to plug the centre of the defence? Middle to front I though they played some of their best football of the season. At the back, it was the same old story. Its not a case of ambition that Mick is interested in these players, its a case of going for what we can get. Do you think Keane would want to come to us knowing that weve already got 4 strikers vying for a first team place, 3 of which are doing quite well.

At the end of the day, mick has to consider a number of things when signing new players, the first being budget, which by the way, he doesnt have a say in. Then he has to consider if they are actually going to improve our team. then its a case of whether the player actually wants to come to the club or not, and considering were in the relegation zone, most players will avoid us like the plague in fear of relegation.

Number 11- Sir Billy…You are an idiot Sir, and I say that with all that understand that money controls football, and in this Country, relegation is the end of the world for a wonderful team like Wolves.
We need to spend money now, big money to secure an experienced striker and defender, either sign up or on loan, this season or we are history.

We have a team full of potential great players in a year or so, if we are relegated you can say goodbye to many of our real talent that are doing their best to compete with a ‘dud’ Manager and without a good leader.
So, why not a 50-60,000 a week player , Morgan is prepared to spend several million on ground improvements, which will not be needed if we go down.
Get involved and attract a couple of high profile experienced players that can get the very best of our young players…we are not going to survive with Doyle who rarely scores goals, E-Banks who has one good game and then goes missing, Fletcher, who has seen better days & Edwards, Jones & Ward, none of whom have made the cut in the Premiership.

The word is spend…spend…spend with some of the funds available, and bring in form players

A lot of sense being talked and a lot of difference of opinion. I’d agree totally that we need some defensive strengthening, I think we need some goals too though. We probably got lucky last year in that Craddock had a great season at both ends for us. I’d just like to say that there are a lot of clubs around us going into the transfer market at the moment really splashing the cash and as was pointed out by someone before, do we really want to run the risk of spending a lot of money and getting relegated when our form has actually picked up a bit. The table is still as tight as anything and to be honest I don’t think I’d want Wolves doing what Birmingham, Villa and West Ham are doing. They’re gambling that 1 or 2 players will suddenly transform their season. Players may I add that have been sat on the bench most of the season. Let’s stick with what we’ve got. Decent defenders that don’t cost the earth are hard to come by these days in what has become a win only type league for the bottom clubs. Unlike many who post comments on this site, I don’t think the the LB position is the main problem. I believe we need an experienced centre back who can command and organise the defence. It’s interesting, in light of our conversation the other week about who should replace McCarthy, that you highlight 3 clubs that, having lost their manager for one reason or another, all made very poor & ill judged appointments and are still trying to recover. Some of those managers, Strachan for example, had loads of experience in the Prem & even in Europe, and failed, some had little experience and failed (See Rogers at Reading). & then you see how poor West Ham’s new left back was at the weekend.

Mick will have been given an amount of money and if it doesn’t stretch to the targets he wants, then he will have to lower his sights accordingly. Being the man of integrity I believe him to be, he will not slag off the other two Ms but instead make the best of the situation. It is that positivity that riles some of our co-posters on here, and yet is largely responsible for keeping the wagon on the rails. Sir Billy in reply to your comments about my post please note that I specifically said not Bridge or for that mater many of the others touted, but we do have to spend some money to stay up and preserve our status and huge Premier League income, that’s a fact of life!

I too was outside the ground in 1984 and buying my “Save our Wolves” t shirt from Geoff Palmer and John Richards in the Mander Centre and none of us wants to return to those days and do a Portsmouth, but as I said there is a middle ground of steady recruitment of quality players mixed with acquiring promising youngsters.

Otherwise we amy as well stay in the Championship and not bother

Sir Billy – The only thing I would say is , spending 65k a week, won’t bankrupt the club. Signing lescott on loan for the rest of the season on 70k a week is less than £2 million quid for instance.

I think the point here though, is not who we are signing in terms of the quality, but more to the point, is who we are signing in terms of the position!

It’s SCREAMINGLY obvious that we need both a left back and a centre half. We also need a good solid midfield player to sit along Milijas.

We DO NOT need strikers, or wingers!

The point Mick McCarthy has made is that it is very difficult to recruit ‘better’ players than the ones currently in the squad.

For instance Lescott keeps being mentioned by fans but he is not available?

David Wheater may be more realistic and available, do you not think that Wolves have/are exploring this signing? but is he better than Craddock/Berra/Stearman?

I don’t agree that we need a left back or a holding midfielder (other than cover for Henry).

I believe we can stop up with the current squad (all fit) along with Mick McCarthy.

Wolfhound – you’ve basically missed the entire point of my post but never mind.

In fairness I think Berra has done Ok stepping up. I’m not so keen on Stearman at centre half but we’ve got Craddock coming back & that should strengthen that position anyway, and I think in time Mouyokolo will prove to be a decent signing…. hope so anyway ! We haven’t really seen him have any reasonable period of time actually fit yet.

I’m not really sure who you expect us to buy that is going to give the kind of guarantees you want. Wheater is a good player, so is Curtis Davies, but are they such a huge step up from what we’ve got ? Would they guarantee survival ? The answer to the first question is arguable on both sides but the second answer is a big no, they wouldn’t. Anybody thinking Lescott at this moment needs to think again. Quite aside from the fact we won’t pay his wages. He is well involved at City at the moment, they won’t let him go in this window, no chance, even if we did want him, they won’t release him.

You keep harping on about a “championship defence”,I know it could do with a bit extra quality but we built our survival last year on this defence. Getting Caddock back should make a big difference, will give us more organisation. We can survive again with this group of players.

I agree with the ridiculous wages that people like Keane are on in the way they are way too high. However……….. we are in the big league now and unless we pay the big money we cannot compete. We would be a very wealthy championship team, but we simply cannot compete with the level thats needed in the Premiership. Having said that, I still believe we are in with a good chance of staying up. We will be forever fighting relegation though and never be 100% established.

Out of interest, can someone name the defenders – other than the same old rich brigade names we keep seeing (who wouldn’t come to us anyway) – that we can afford who are better than what we have got? Wheater is realistic, if we think he is good enough, but perhaps he doesn’t want to return to W-ton. And like “bigedd” says, good defenders are hard to come by and no one is going to willingly weaken their team just to help us strengthen ours. As for Hammill, if he wants to come, why not? We may not benefit from him much in this campaign but it is right to look to the future as well.

i have to agree. maybe we are looking to be a strong championship side for the future – but i do think its in case we go down. the focus seems to be long term and stabilising the team for championship, worst case. this is why mccarthy mentioned there will be no selling of players if we go down, that they will need to fight to get back up.

i hope i am wrong. but the players we are linked with seem to be more investment.

We are not linked with any good players.

also i would go for robbie keane and play him WITH doyle, instead of in place of him. that way we have 2 sets of forwards! which will be awesome!

i just pray that we are at least linked with good players, even if we dont buy them. at least it will make me feel better.

Saturdays result may have been so different with a half decent defence.

Midfield and going forward we looked great and troubled Man City. Hunt, Fletcher, Doyle and Jarvis, Milijas were on the ball.

In defence though, Berra proved yet again he is the weak link, also Ward was at his old tricks again, to far forward leaving a massive gaping hole to be exploited on the counter. Also Hennesey looked like a blinded rabbit for the third goal. Stuck to the spot with little or no inclination what to do.

I also agree that buying young players for the future is the way forward longer term. But ultimately could you imagine the buzz that would go around Molineux if we could sign players of the calibre of Keane and Lescott. This signing makes good commercial sense, as it allows Mr Moxey to attempt a £20m sale of Jarvis. I hear that a potential buyer has already made themselves known.

For about 25 minutes he was just on fire. Very wise of MM to bring on KH who man marked him until Mancini brought him off otherwise it could have been six or seven and our comeback might not have happened. For those of you who were shouting for 95k a week Wayne Bridge, did you see his performance on against Arsenal ? Directly to blame for all three goals. Hope Wardy didn’t see it, he’ll want a rise.

So easy to sit in one’s armchair and say, “Sign two quality defenders.” It’s another to name names of those “quality defenders.”

Lescott? Man City will not let him leave. (Cover for Kompany and Toure.)
Wheater? Is he better than waht we have?
Curtis Davies? As Wheater. Will Villa let him go to a relegation rival?
Woodgate? Would he come? Is he a risk because of injury history?
Cuellar? Will Villa really let him go to a relegation rival?
    Beye? See Cuellar.
    Warnock? See Cuellar.

Where else do we go? If we cannot get the Villa players that cannot get into a team that has one more point than us, where do we really go. If they are the back-ups at a team in relegation trouble would they improve us?

In my mind, we are yet to see a fit Mouyokolo. He did well on Saturday when he came on. I still feel he will be better than any of those that might realistically come.

Craddock is coming back, and could make a difference this season.

Zubar looked good at left-back when moved there on Saturday. Elokobi is suspended for Saturday, and Ward hobbled off. Zubes could well be our starting left-back on Saturday.

Berra made one bad mistake on Saturday, which was when he miscontrolled a clearance on halfway, and let in Toure one-on-one on Hennessey.

Guedioura is expected back in February, and it is hoped Kights. Vokes is nearing fitness.

If we survive this season we have youngsters such as Batth, Mendez-Laing, Gorman, Ismael, Winnal, Mujangi Bia (looked good on Saturday), Ebanks-Landell, Cassidy, David Davis, Nathan Rooney, Spray, Doherty, etc coming though the reserves, and looking promising for the future.

It’s a matter of patience, which seems in short supply on here.

The results in the last eight matches would put us in mid-table, despite playing Chelsea, Liverpool away, Man City home and away, etc.

I expect us to stay up. We need six / seven wins to do so. Look at the fixture list. We don’t face Tevez, Dzeko, Villa, Toure(s), Milner, Barry, Johnson, etc every week.

Keep the faith. Also name names if you think they will improve the squad, AND be available.

Jarvis or Bentley? (Jarvis.) Keane or Doyle? (Doyle.) (I rated Robbie very highly, but he is not the player of three or four seasons ago, and certainly not on wages of 65K per week. (Spurs have said no loans for him. Three year contarct at £65K per week plus 6M transfer fees? Has he GOT three years in him? His wages will continue to be paid whether he plays or not.)

Wolfhound – The 2nd half of last season, our defence was very strong. We didn’t score many apart from the away game at West Ham & it was a strong defence that earned us so many points. Teams found us very hard to break down. In the last 8 games of last season we let in 6 goals & 3 of them came in the collapse at Pompey in the 2nd to last game of the season. I know this season it’s not quite been as strong, but the players you talk about being “championship defenders” are the same players that were Premier League defenders last year. The most important player probably being Craddock who looks like he is nearly fit.

I know what you’re saying about Bridge, he needs to get match fit. But when he’s only at a club for half a season & they’re paying out in he region of £90k a week for him, the least he could do is stand in the right place !

    The Usual Suspects

Makes me chuckle reading all the comments on here each day

Wolves imv have set their wage bill low for Premiership standards as this is a ‘safety net’ put in place by Mr Moxey

If we were intending to sign say 3 Prem Proven Players that imv would mean that we lose 2 to 3 average players in our squad per Prem Proven player to achieve this

The other way of achieving this imv – is to simply look for older Prem Proven who have got a couple of seasons left at the highest level and offer them a deal per season

At £40k pw this would mean an annual salary of £2m per man or £6m for all 3 If we were to look for younger players that are Prem Proven then we would be looking at possible transfer fees of between £3m+ upwards per man Therefore costing the club £10 to £15m in transfer fees ad a further £6 to £15m in wages and bonuses

So my preference would be older Prem Proven players 2 or 3 to stabilise the side and become an established mid table Prem side

My fears are that too many ‘project players’ will result in a constant relegation battle each season

The problem with the young and hungry policy is that it gets harder every season to achieve due to stiff competition from the many clubs looking to do the same

As a club I hope we look to drastically improve standards with our youth set up as I would like to see 1 or 2 graduate through our own academy each season and gain valuable experience in the league

Imv it will also be inevitable that quality like Jarvis will go the same way as Darren Bent and want to play in a more established team and double or treble their incomes!

People bleat on about bankrupting the club – I readily believe that signing 2 or 3 Prem proven would not do that The club has a commercial side to it and again imv doesnt have the right people in charge to drive it forward and attract additional investment

Prudent spending is all very good but a lack of commercial dynamism is also equally as bad as signing too many players at £70k plus per week!

With MM and Co and Moxey the club will be in a state of constant relegation battles each season or at worst a yo yo side BOTH the football side and commercial side requires to be driven to attract players and business

We cannot ever hope to compete in the Prem without it and whilst MM has gained us Premiership status and Moxey has maintained us as a better Championship team punching above its weight – if we offload any of our better players at any point and dont replace them with similar – its obvious what could happen next?

    We hope for far better

The only one was an over-priced Robbie Keane. Not because of the cost, but what he brings to the table nowadays, and he is not one for any length of time.

I notice that you have not mentioned any players to actually bring in. Same old, same old. Name names if you want to knock my posts. I named plenty in mine. I am wanting new blood, but only if it improves what we already have.

Kent. What I am suggesting is that we buy some more quality footballers in an effort to maintain our lucrative Premier league status which is worth a minimum of £33 million each season. Also as a fan I would like to see a bit more quality on the pitch ,you know we are supposed to be entertained and some better footballers would help.On the ground redevelopment you clearly did not read my list of all the other football clubs that have hit financial problems as a direct result of building new stadia.New stands are fine but they have to be paid for,and the best way to do that is to stay in the Prem.
Brereton,Next I will be accusing you of being Sir Billy.Hope the American soccer writing is going well. Can’t you find us a player or two over there, then I can accuse you of being our scout.

Wolfhound – I think we can both trust that whatever transfer policy & targets we have, players of Darren Ward’s “ability” won’t be included anymore !!

I know & appreciate we all have our different opinions, and it’s quite clear our opinions are pretty much a complete polar opposite to each other.

I just don’t get why you’d question the ambition or desire to stay in this league.
What is the “going rate” ? are you talking about splashing out wages for the likes of Bridge or Lescott ? or are you talking about putting up the fees & wages for the likes of Wheater or Davies ? The “ball breaking” conversation we’ve had before. I’d have no problem at all with either Wheater or Davies coming to club as i wouldn’t expect them to be on huge wages or command huge transfer fees. But i don’t see an awful lot to suggest they are a marked improvement on Mouyokolo who has Prem experience and was rated very highly by the Hull fans. Hopefully now he is fit, he’ll stay fit and help contribute to our survival.

Brereton, A couple of years back I named Harewood, and we signed him and apart from one run against Derby, he was rubbish.

98- PLEASE provide evidence of that claim about my ever commenting on the re-building of the stadium? Don’t just pull satements out of the air like that without backing it up. I have NEVER been involved in any discussion about the stadium.

That I toe the company line is true. I happen to think that they have pretty much got it right to date. I said when we signed Bent on loan that I was against it, as I was with Kevin Kyle. Apart from that I have been happy. We have gone from expected relegation to League One to playing in the Premier League. Is that not progress? I remember taking stick over Freddy Eastwood because I felt he was not a 20 goals per season stiker. I was told everyone apart from me and Mick could see it. Has he achieved that milestone with Coventry? (Check it out if you like,. He hasn’t.)

If my opinion is that we are getting it right is not your opinion, I can live with that. It is merely an opinion. It doesn’t mean I am right, or that you are wrong. It’s just what I feel. Is that so wrong? I am a “glass half-full,” and you are a “glass half-empty.” We are both entitled to our views.

Chris Hoggard – I will have to hold my hands up & say no, I’ve not seen your list, can you remember which article you posted it in as I’d be interested to see it. Although I wouldn’t mind betting the list of clubs getting into trouble due to player spending far exceeds it.

I understand you want to be entertained & see better players, we all do, and not particularly directing this bit at you as I don’t know you’re feelings towards it, but, there seems to be so many fans who think we should pay whatever it takes to stay up. My point is, basically, if being in the Prem is worth £33 million (for arguments sake), there’s no point in spending £40 million to achieve it because eventually, the fans will be entertained even less when the losses & debt force us into a Southampton type position in the 3rd tier of English football….. which we are not immune from just because we’re Wolves.

100- The only three Americans I would want at Wolves would be Stuart Holden, Clint Dempsey or Brad Guzan. (Eric Lichaj at Villa might be “one for the future” though.)

First wanna say the match against man c was great. If they didnt have Tevez we would have won it, as always great determination and morale in the team.

The transfer window is soon closing and i think we can find many good and “cheap” players in europe cause in england the market is overheated i think. Mick then says it takes so long for them to adapt but if they are good enough its no problem.

French, dutch, swedes, turkish, serbian, bosnian players can be bought for a bargain i bet..please mick not just scotish and irish players in wolves…ok, im from sweden but i want more of a mix in the team, not just players who can run and tackle(a little exaggerated maybe).

Team vs Liverpool if I can choose

    Hahnemann

Zubar (if not Foley is back)
    Berra
Stearman (matchfit Craddock would even nicer)
Ward (Zubar if Foley can play)

    Hunt
Jones (cant wait for Guedioura here)
    Milijas
    Jarvis

Doyle (Target player, and SEB is injured)
    Fletcher

Noo, dont want Henry back in the starting team with his back- and sideway passes…
And i think Mujangi-Bia made a decent last min against city..

I think it is becoming clearer that MM isn’t going to sign a centre back, I would have taken a gamble (injury record) on Woodgate, but with Craddock and Mouyoloko now back to fitness Mick obviously feels he’s well covered. Liked Zubar at leftback, I hope MM sticks with this for a bit.
Totally disagree with 107 freddeno regarding Karl Henry. On saturday he came on and immediately shut down Tevez who was running riot. He is an important part of our escape plan. His sideways/backwards passing helps us keep control of the ball and I’m sure the unappreciative have said the same about all the playbreakers down the years.

Looking forward to eating one of Moxey’s ridiculously overpriced Fan’s Feasts in the New Stadium in the Premiership.
It’s all part of the all round development of the Club of ours. (Not the Fan’s Feast)

Dont agree that it helps us keep control of the ball. Its the opposite, our goalie kicks the ball away to the other team and we lose the possession we had…yeah sure he can stop people with his tackling..just think we have been able to keep the ball more without him in the team compared to earlier matches this season and a better passing game..Of course im not saying play the ball forward in all situations that would be stupid.

cannot believe the amount of people complaining about a so-called lack of ambition.. anyone actually seen this boy play? just had a look on youtube and he looks like a terrific prospect – very quick, good feet.. looks like jarvis a couple of years ago! why sign a load of prima donna benchwarmers for tens of millions when we could be getting another bargain like jarvis who is now by some way our most valuable asset?!
