Wolves cool over transfer duo talk

Wolves have today offered a cool response to reports that they were on the brink of clinching their first deals of the January transfer market.

Manager Mick McCarthy’s long-term tracking of Barnsley’s former Liverpool winger Adam Hammill was reckoned by sources in Yorkshire to be on the brink of resulting in a £500,000 switch to Molineux.

At the same time, Scottish media reports claimed that Wolves were also about to complete a deal for 20-year-old Dundee striker Leigh Griffiths.

But Molineux sources, while conceding the club’s interest in both players, cautioned fans from expecting either deal to be imminent.

Wolves have both players on their radar, although it’s Hammill who would be seen as a recruit for immediate action in the Premier League.

The 22-year-old, who has led a nomadic career since Liverpool decided he was surplus to requirements 18 months ago, has a clause in his contract guaranteeing his exit for £500,000.

After loan spells at Dunfermline, Southampton and Blackpool, Hammill has made the most progress of his career to date at Oakwell where he has become a fans’ favourite.

The Yorkshire reports claim Nottingham Forest, Cardiff City, Leeds United and Everton have been linked with Hammill, but it’s McCarthy who looks like winning the battle.

Griffiths once had a trial at Albion during Tony Mowbray’s regime. Wolves are suggested to be poised to seal a £150,000 deal that allows Griffiths to stay with Dundee until the end of the season.

But Wolves have dismissed the reports are “pure speculation.”
