Michael Brown is on Wolves’ radar

Wolves have revealed they pulled out of the chase for Middlesbrough defender David Wheater – but admitted Portsmouth midfielder Michael Brown is on their radar.

Wheater is set to join Bolton for £2.5million imminently as a possible replacement for £15million-rated Gary Cahill, who is expected to leave the Reebok Stadium.

Wolves were one of several clubs interested in Wheater – who is out of contract in the summer – with Villa, Stoke and Everton.

But the Molineux hierachy are unconvinced of the value for money of the player and whether he is better than what they have.

Manager Mick McCarthy said: “I think you’ll probably find he’ll end up at Bolton and that will be great business for them.”

Centre-backs Jody Craddock and Steven Mouyokolo – the latter who is the same age as 23-year-old Wheater – played 65 and 45 minutes respectively of yesterday’s behind closed doors friendly against Leicester yesterday, which Wolves won 1-0.

McCarthy added: “Jody and Steven played yesterday so I’ve got those two, Richard Stearman and Christophe Berra, so I’m not in desperate need of a centre-back.”

As for Brown, who turns 34 later this month, McCarthy admitted he is under consideration as he looks again after missing out on Steve Sidwell, who slipped his grasp to join Fulham.

The former Manchester City, Tottenham, Fulham and Wigan midfielder, who played against Wolves in the 2003 play-off final for Sheffield United, has a clause in his reported £34,000-a-week contract triggering another year at Pompey if he plays one more game.

Portsmouth boss Steve Cotterill admits they can’t afford to pay it.

McCarthy said: “I’m aware of that. I was interested in Sidwell and I nearly had that deal done.

“So I was looking at that position. But I won’t confirm or deny Brown.”

But McCarthy denied reported interest in Reading striker Simon Church.

He added: “There’s nothing happening with that one.”

But the Wolves boss confirmed he is seeking Premier League experience.

He said: “It’s really got to be somebody that’s played in the Premier League with the spine of the team.

“You might get away with a wide player or a young full-back, but I don’t see them around.”

I’m afraid this is the club under the 3 m’s all over.

No ambition whatsover. £2.5 million is out of our price range. Worse still, McCarthy isn’t in desperate need for a centre half. Well, it’s just the 25,000 fans that are desperate then.

Brown, why on earth do we want a 34 year old? Is this part of our ‘young and hungry’ policy moxey, or is part of ‘building for the future’ policy?

Personally, i think its part of our ‘Bargain Basement’ policy , which puts us in the same league as Blackpool.

Well, after much excitement it looks like another damp squib of a transfer window.

No! What a waste of money for a player who is past his best.

Henry is fit again but in his absence we have done ok and Milijas is finally showing his quality, we also have Edwards, Jones, Guedioura, Foley and Mancienne – whom are all better players then Brown!

We only want quality premiership players. This is as pointless a signing as Marcus Bent!

If this guy is signed and replaces Milijas then Mick should be sacked on that decision alone. Hopefully we have other options.

Not in need of centre halves? This is where MM you may fall on your sword! Here is an assessment of our centre halves:-

Craddock – Nowhere near good enough when he first came but has bot better with age. Experienced, reads the game well and scores vital goals. Our best centre half but in his last season and how will this injury affect him?

Berra – Solid enough but lacks pace. Good in the air but has a tendency to grapple and hold players. Will give penalties away eventually.

Stearman – Class sometimes, can play football and has pace. The problem is that he switches off, makes clumsy mistakes and tackles.

Mouyokolo – Injury prone and yet to see him have a good game!

    Here is another headline

Millwall defender Shittu welcomes Wolves interest

Comment – I bet he is and we are desperate if we went for him instead of Wheater because he is cheap!

After reading this article i am slightly relieved!!! As I posted yesterday I dont think Brown has what it takes for the prem anymore,
reading between the lines it seems as though Brown is an option if we cant get our main
targets in (whoever they may be). Sidwell was obviously first choice but got away. So I would suggest that MM is looking to bring in a left back and an experienced center mid fielder.
Stephen Warnock would be my choice at left back for a bid of 3 million, center mid maybe Alan Smith on loan,or, is Sean Davis getting much of a game at Bolton.

What is wrong with everyone of you moaning, typically negative Wolves supporters? This is not the 1950′s and we aren’t the club you think we are (yet!). 2003/4 aside we have been out of the top flight for over 20 years. This recent inclusion into the Premier League is only a part of our regeneration as it’s going to take a lot longer than 2 or 3 seasons to establish ourselves.

Why would David Wheater come to Wolves and not Bolton? Bolton are doing well at the moment, but they have been in the Premier for a lot longer than us.
It’s OK suggesting who we should be going for, but if they don’t want to sign for us we have to go for the players who will.

So the latest reports have us interested in Stoke’s Whelan and Faye plus Portsmouth’s Brown and Millwall’s Shittu. Whelan at 27yo could be a good signing (?) but Faye, Brown and Shittu? Faye is almost 33yo, Brown almost 34yo and Shittu 30yo and how do players of that age fit in with the so-called ‘young and for the future’ policy which McCarthy has adopted up until now?
The big question is, why are we being linked with these type of players when their futures at Molineux if signed, would be very short ones?
Although we have a fairly young squad in age at present, we surely do not need to buy 30yo+ players who would have no long term futures at Molineux and would not add much to the squad and whose salaries could be better employed on younger players on 5 year contracts not 6 months or 12 months. – PL experienced players are needed to strengthen the squad but these players? – No thank you!
Wolves MUST raise their sights and sign experienced PL players in the 25 – 27yo bracket and pay the salaries they will command and although they will be higher in most cases than Wolves pay now that’s life – as the old saying goes, if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys!
The Premier League is a costly level of football but then on the reverse side, the rewards are extremely high. Sitting in the lower reaches of the PL provides a decent payoff come the end of each season but then the payoff in the upper reaches is significantly higher and that’s where Wolves should be aiming for.
Now before all you Wolves fans start screaming out ‘… but we must balance the books and not go spending money we do not have …’ etc., I realise that and I know we have done that before with disastrous results but scrimping and saving and looking for bargain basement deals will not elevate Wolves any higher in the PL than we are already and do Wolves fans really want their team to spend season after season fighting relegation?
McCarthy has brought in Fletcher to add to Doyle and Milijas, who after his time of adjustment is proving well worth the money he cost. Now IF we can only bring in 2 midfielders and possibly 1 or 2 defenders then we should be in a strong position to move away from the relegation area and make our mark in the PL BUT the buying of ‘past it’ or cheap players is NOT the way forward!

This is amazing. It’s the latest punchline to an ongoing joke that started with the signing of Marcus Bent – and boy, what an impact player he has turned out to be – make no real attempts to compete for the signature of someone who might actually do us some good, and to throw into the mix, for good measure, a Reading striker who scores a goal every six games and some bloke from Exeter that nobody has heard of.

I am going to put forward a theory now that may be unpopular with some, but we need to start getting our squad exactly right at the start of every season because the mid-season transfer window screws us. Why? Because why would a modern footballer with a bank account full of cash even want to come to Wolverhampton in the middle of the season to help out in a relegation struggle? The city is depressing enough as it is (The Newhampton being the exception) and when the Wolves are struggling, the whole place gets the blues. Who’d want to move into that, when you can be down in the capital or up in the vibrant north-east? It’s no coincidence that our foreigners either take an age to bed in (Milijas) or just do a Van Damme / Maierhofer and decide that Yates’ at throwing out down and the mangy ducks of West Park are not for them. We live in a depressed, depressing city, why would anyone commit to us, apart from the likes of Bent and Brown?

Alot of talk of getting in Charlie Adam from Blackpool – Good player agreed BUT we wont bid above or the same as Villa due to a CEO who maintains his stance on not ‘bankrupting’ the club not doing a Leeds blah blah

The club deals alot in ‘smoke and mirrors’ and the more gullable amongst us fall for it time and again!

Imv I would prefer to simply have a left back that is capable of doing the job – a priority that has been a concern since we were promoted

Ade Guediora (sp?) was a good purchase and brought in on loan last season BUT again the lad still struggled to get games in the Prem – Would any new additions be treated the same way by MM and if so what purpose would they serve if these additions could not challenge or be allowed to challenge for a place in the team?

As a club we wont be allowed to go beyond our wage structure due to an obsessive OTT attitude by Mr Moxey – the same overcautious attitude when driving a car causes accidents

Imv I also believe that MM would struggle with anyone above the calibre of what we currently have due to lack of man management skills and before anyone quotes me on players that we ‘went in for’ but didnt get – just bear in mind that we didnt get them and this seems to apply to most so-called attempts Funny thing is the likes of bottom club West Ham bring in players like Wayne Bridge on loan – Why cant we do similar? Is a season long loan for 2 or 3 real quality players really going to bankrupt the club or reduce the size of senior management bonuses???

Thanks for being the first to bite.

It’s not the pubs, the houses, the nightlife or the culture, it’s the air of post-industrial depression that hangs over the place like a shroud and colours the entire place. It’s the reason our fans are seen, at times with some justification, as the dreariest moaners in the top flight. Wolverhampton is not a good place to be right now.

You’ll probably find that most of the players live in places like Perton Ridge, Codsall and Tettenhall, by the way – lovely places all, essentially dull and airless unless you like rabbits and squirrels. And when you’re using the proximity of Birmingham, Britain’s “number two” city in every sense of the phrase, as a selling point in our favour, I’m afraid you’ve already lost. But I can concede one point to you – a few strolls around Ironbridge Gorge on a Sunday afternoon and Jelle and Stefan might have stayed. Sadly, not to be…

At the end of the day, i seriously doubt Mick is considering Brown as a replacement for anyone, but as a backup in case we get the injuries that we have had earlier this season. I dont mind a bit of prem experience as i think were lacking in that department, and if he helps develop some of our younger players in training, in the dressing room or on the pitch, i dont think it will be a bad signing.

I would like to see a left back come in, but our results have improved just before this transfer window, and if we can have a second half of the season where we slightly improve on our first half we should stay up, and i personally think we will finnish the season stronger.

We can go on n on, MM WONT change his defence, he’s stuck with the same squad of defenders for the last 2-3 seasons, he said a few weeks ago we were after a Right-sided CH, now JC/SM are fit, he’s saying we’ve got our 4 CH’s back and i cant see Wheater or other CH’s being any better than my 4? Same with our LB position whether we like it or not he WONT change from either Elokobi/Ward if either of them are fit they will ALWAYS be first choice LB’s you could name 3 or more players who could possibly do a better job, but MM will ALWAYS stay loyal to those 4 CH’s and those 2 LB’s. As for David Jones leaving im not bothered one iota he’s not as good a player as he thinks he is, he constantly gets himself into trouble by holding the ball to long going round n round in circles, he forever passes to players who are either marked or have a defender nearly up their arse. So let him go Milijas is a far far better midfielder, go for Jenas as a replacement. UTW:

I think you are just a dreary bloke to be fair. Hence your downer on the city.

And yes, defo using Brum as a selling point. Not too many better places to live in the UK that are close enough to commute for a premiership footballer.

Your argument doesn’t quite wash when the ‘dreary northern city with suburbs dull and airless unless you like squirrels’ known as Salford nr Manchester , attracts some of the best players in the world, or indeed the fine but rundown city of Liverpool.

“PeteNutter” now! You’re on fire! What next? PeteNutty? PeteNoNuts?

Yeah, the thing about Manchester and Liverpool is that they’re not especially picturesque but they happen to have three of the highest-paying football teams in the flaming WORLD in them right now, you plank! You’d be surprised how much drizzle-tolerance £150’000 a week can buy! They also have vibrant nightlife and culture, whereas, by your estimation, Birmingham has… good connections for local commuter services! Oh, be still my pounding heart!

And me, dreary? Matey, you need to get yourself to the Newhampton sometime and see me carousing and saluting the many majestic possibilities of the coming night! I’ll even shout you a pint of the real ale you almost certainly drink. PeteNuts is nice like that!

52….you should get yourself a life, and look around…If you think wolverhampton is depressing then take a walk around, Wigan,Bolton, Burnley, Blackburn, Salford,Stoke,Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Sandwell and London. Not the nicest of places to walk through. Its wages that attract footballers, not the team they are playing for.Your own robbie keane will tell you that one….

whoopee Michael brown, no pace, not a great passer and a poor record for getting booking for ill timed challenges mainly because hes too slow.
I can see financially why cos hes cheaper, than Sidwell, Bentley etc, but what are the football reasons? He is competitive and loves a challenge and looking at his record he was captain at fulham and did well at spurs.I can see why he’s a target but he is 34
yes he played in the prem but tiote(newcastle) and malumbo(baggies) show you get really good young competitive midfield players who can quickly adapt to the prem.
