Liverpool win fires up Mick McCarthy

Thursday 30th December 2010, 11:30AM GMT.

Bullish Mick McCarthy today insisted it was ‘advantage Wolves’ in the survival race after his battling side’s superb win at Liverpool last night.

The shock 1-0 victory at Anfield saw Wolves climb off the bottom above New Year’s Day opponents West Ham to within a point of safety, and left the Molineux gaffer claiming it was ‘squeaky bum time’ elsewhere.

“It squeezes the league up again and all those who’ve had a good result like Fulham, Blackburn, Birmingham and West Ham are brought back into it,” said McCarthy.

“This result gives us more belief and they’ll be a few bums squeaking elsewhere.

“Everyone might have thought we’d have gone after the Wigan result but our win squeezed it up again.”

But McCarthy brought his players crashing back to earth after saying they must be even better to topple the Hammers.

“We played well last night but the same again on Saturday won’t be good enough,” he said. “It’s West Ham away and they will fancy their chances.”

The Wolves boss maintains his team will survive.

“I was asked  before the game if we could stay up and I said yes,” he added. “I just think that from the players I’ve got.

“They’re not going to be pushed down by anybody.”

McCarthy revealed how a broadside at his misfiring centre-backs Richard Stearman and Christophe Berra did the trick.

“I gave them a bit of stick from Sunday and they were hurting, but they proved me wrong,” he said.

“I gave it out to them and when you do that, you want a response — and the pair of them were terrific.”

McCarthy decided the best way to take on Liverpool was to get them on the back foot. “I think most people’s perception of Wolves would be that we’re going down,” he said. “We decided to have a go and I guess fortune favoured the brave.”

Chairman Steve Morgan — a former Liverpool shareholder who tried to take over the club — was in the Caribbean. McCarthy added: “I had a good luck message yesterday morning.

And I guarantee I’ll have another message saying ‘well done’.”

Well Done Mick – There you are, one from me too.

We have a terrible run of games though… I just hope we stay in touching distance so that our run in of the last 9 games gives us the real chance to stay up.

It’s crucial we keep picking up points now to stay in touch because we genuinely do have the best run in possible.

A result against one of the big teams now ( City, Utd, chelsea ) and we will all start believing.

As we are only just half way through the season there is all to play for. Four points seperate Wolves from a host of other clubs above us. There is no reason why we cannot do better in the second half of the season and those currently above us do worse.
Thirty eight points or more should be achievable.

The ‘bottom at Christmas’ thing is not relevant:

    a. We were not bottom at Christmas.
    b. Postponements in November has left teams with games in hand (if we had played the Baggies we would have had 3 more points!).
    c. This season is totally different from any previous season.

If nothing else, the performance once again seemed to prove that the players are behind the manager.
It also means that we’ve now won 3 of our last 5 games, which is a statistic that we’re unlikely to match over the rest of the season, but which at least indicates that the cautious approach of last year has been largely dispensed with, rightly so, IMO.
Another 6 wins over the rest of the campaign would give us a fighting chance; there’ll obviously be extra pressure in games against other sides down the bottom, but it doesn’t really matter who we pick up points against, as long as we hold our nerve and don’t go to pieces after disappointments such as the Wigan no-show.

McCarthy is right. We will have to be a lot better to roll over West Ham because that Liverpool team offered nothing. When we went one up with plenty of time to go I expected them to come at us with wave after wave of attacks but it didn’t happen.
Liverpool have now lost 8 games this season and sit just 4 points ahead of us.
The Liverpool we all remember never lost 8 in 4 seasons.
One thing I disagree with McCarthy on was Berras performance.
I thought he was awful and a real liability. He nearly gave them an early goal with a stupid foul and could easily have given Liverpool two penalties with his holding and shoving.

Woy Hodgson’s praise of Wolves’ performance was very grudging and his comment about Wolves being very physical, though meant as a compliment, was a disgrace. This win had as much to do with playing great football as anything else. Everyone has been rightly praising SEB, Wardy and the defence for last night, but for me Milijas was awesome-fantastic defensively, thoughtful distribution and some of his long range passing is breathtaking. Nenad is now an essential part of the team.

Well im still not convinced MM/TC are the pair to take Wolves to the next level. Yes it was a fantstic win last night. All the players gave their usual 100%, and deserved all 3pts. It was no fluke we outplayed them in every department. But our trouble is we cant win back-to-back games, never mind 3-4 on the trot. Before people have a go at me its my ‘opinion’ which like you im entitled to it. First and foremost i support Wolves,i dont support any given manager at Wolves or player/s has they all come and all go? But ive always stayed and always will stay loyal. Wolves are my club and have been for 53yrs. But i still think we need a manager to take us to the next level i.e about 8th-12th in the Premier League for a few years. Then look to move towards a top 6 position. Under MM/TC i believe we will always be in and around 14th-17th every season. Which to me is not progress, yes 15th-17th keeps you in the PL, but is that what you want for your club every season??? UTW:

    Well done Wolves……

Now lets not get carried away!

I know you can only beat the team in front of you, but that liverpool team were very poor.

Berra constantly holding and pulling shirts will get punished by any other referee, Stearman diving into every tackle or getting rolled by the strikers will get punished by an in form striker or lead to his own dimissal and as for Elokobi, what was he doing at the liverpool free kick where he fell over and lay on the floor! He looks like he has been working out over the festive period and looks more like a body builder than a footballer.

Ok…..a great 3 points away, the first at anfield for 26 years but our back to back performances have had no consistency all season.
Ward does get a lot of stick, from me especially and at times I feel for him because he is a poor midfielder, terrible winger and diabolical defender – but I have to remember I suppose that he was bought to Wolves as a striker……and it is our tactically inept manager that has played him out of position for 3 years.

I still think MM is not the manager to take us forward, Steven Fletcher is a better forward than Ward and should be paired with SEB, who in my opinion is in the form of his life MOM last night.

    New year wish list –
    Left Back – Desperately needed
Centre Back – MM was a centre back, why can’t he find a decent player?
Midfielder – Aggressive midfielder, Guedioura was doing well before injury

new coach – clipboard? what does he do?

I hope MM keeps Wolves up, BUT I do not think he can take us to the next level……If he does then I will hold my hands up and buy the guy a pint….

I think you’ll find that the only abuse levelled at Ward is that he is a rubbish left back and I don’t see any reason why that perception should change.

I’ve never heard any Wolves fan question his credentials as a striker, it’s just he hasn’t had many chances to play there because our illustrious leader sees fit to continually play him out of position.

The 3 games that he has played as a supporting striker have seen his 3 best performances in a Wolves shirt (IMO) so maybe that’s where thick Mick should play him.

Revolutionary idea – Play players in their natural positions – we should try it more often – you never know what might happen!

A win is win and on top of that a welcoming one and whether it is from a lack-lustre Liverpool side is not going to diminish Wolves performance. Certainly, had it been a defeat against this same poor Liverpool side then it would be dramatic and M.Mc Carthy would be in serious troubles. We all know from day one of the season and the manager rightly opined before taking on Stoke it would be much more difficult to obtain survival despite the outlay of £15m. How right he was to say that Wolves would have to toil to repeat the same survival act of last season. Unfortunately, from the last 25 years in England managers are not given time to build a team and on most occasions they are forced to buy average players just to please the demanding fans. I think if we are lucky enough to avoid the drop then these Wolves players will grow into confidence and are likely to make more progress. Already we have seen how Jarvis has adapted to the Premiership and others like Milijas,Edwards,
Berra and others need time to develop. So it is vital to a club to be able to stay longer in that league and with time may be we can establish ourselves and the development to continue. Buying also must be shrewd. And blooding the youngsters from the academy to the first team must be the priority of the club if they are to find a good base from where they can launch their way towards a top ten club. So for us all patience is needed. The battle is still tough in the basement area but at least we can count on our team to fight on. Good luck to the team and to all our fans a very Happy New Year with good things to come our way.

Fantastic result and not at all surprised by it.When we lost to WIGAN I said to the wife I would not be surprised if we beat LIVERPOOL.
Mick is not my favourite and I want him out as he has us in the position we are in,but yes but,if he continues to be brave and approach games to win and not try to strangle teams and then hope for the best he may find me backing him as the WOLVES boss!
We showed intent in the game and beleivied we could win,LIVERPOOL were poor and are an average team so are we,what we had last night was “We will win attitude”this needs to be carried and further enhanced over the coming weeks and we will be safe.
SEB was immense last night and proved given time and playing time he can do the same JOB as doyle but also be a goal threat.Micko should learn from the SEB situation and also Milijias that you dont have to keep your favourites in the team even when they are not producing.!!
Berra and Stearman were good last night but still put in the odd miss tackle and pull of shirt with pushing and shoving,Liverpool nearly scored from the quickly taken free kick, the concedeing of the free kick was completely unneccasary.
We need to be in the face and also controlled and composed do this with brains and we will survive without a doubt, and treat each game as the last one,as the WIGAN result is not forgotten and should be used as a constant reminder.Wigan took 6points off us yet are still only two points ahead, and if we had drawn the two we would be two ahead!as they are a poor side, they drew last night but Arsenal should have scored a few more.
Beat WEST HAM and they will struggle to survive leaving two other,I beleive BLUES will go down as they are very poor but dogged, leaving WOLVES,NEWCASTLE,VILLA,FULHAM,WIGAN,WEST BROM AND POSSIBLY STOKE FIGHTING FOR SURVIVAL.I beleive it will be between FULHAM,WEST BROM AND WIGAN.We are certainely capable of staying up but we have to beat teams around us!!!!!It is a must BEAT west ham and we are good as safe,we have to beat them, the players have to play for there MOTHERS!!!

Not been on here for a while but here goes –

26 – We all want progress but it does not happen over night, i think we’ll have to be patient and accept if we can stay in the EPL then next season will probably be very similiar to this regardless of who we buy. We need 3/4 years at this level before we can think about being solid mid table team.

25 – Agree Ned is vital to us now

In 2008 B’Burn were 19th Pl19 Pts 17 they went on to fin 15th Pl38 Pts 41. In 2007 Wigan were 17th had Pl19 Pts 14 they fin 14th Pl 38 Pts 40. I still beleive Wolves can stay up and 38pts like last season will probably do it.

Do not agree that Sam or O’Neill will come to Wolves. MM is one of the longest serving managers now and i think everyone would agree that usually brings a degree of success.

I’d love to see W.Bridge here on loan – that would do for me. Keane would also be good because his career is going down the pan so would have a point to prove!

3 Pts at WHU would be amazing and really would put pressure on those around us. Long way to go. Keep the faith.

Ok fair play to mick he managed to get a very decent performance from berra, stearman, elokobi and zubar but they are not consistent and will face a much sterner test at west ham.
Zubar apart I think all the other 3 are liabilites and make the same mistakes over and over again.like switching off, getting caught in possession, losing their man, givin away silly fouls and penalties.

still sack him – the happy clappers are back because they have something to be happy about. A win is a win, no matter who its against, and just because this liverpool team have been as poor as they have been for years, it doesnt mean the win is any less of an acomplishment. After all, the majority of players in that liverpool team would walk into most premier league teams, and they have 2 or 3 that could be described as the best players in the world.

Now is the time for a run of wins if there ever was one. we really need 3 points against west hame if only to keep us in the survival fight with the run against the top teams after that, But if we can get a few points i think we have as good a chance as any to survive, as our finnish to the season will be against teams around us, which means it will hopefully still be in our hands.

Just heard a nasty rumour Wolves are looking at signing Michael Brown from Portsmouth. So much for bringing in quality in January …. This stinks of being the cheap option again.

I will tell you somthing for nowt, Michael Brown is a very good player. He may not set the world on fire and has a nasty streak somtimes but he does the horrible stuff other players wont like break the play up, get stuck in.

If we could do a straight swap with Halford i would be chuffed

All the Mick lovers, relax one swallow does not make a summer, however it is nice to have the happy clappers show up on this forum every now and then,I would not begrudge a few more days of happy clappers on this forum,as most likely it will mean we have won.
Do stay real though,if Mick had gone 6 games ago,we would have atleast had another 5-6points,and if he had not been with us this season we would have never been in the bottom 3.
If we are to look at our first 8 games we should have accrued more than 4 points!!!.
Mick’s hand as been forced due to injuries,Milijias,Seb would definetely not have been in the team.
Mick needs to adapt and realise if players are not producing they have to sit it out!
I cant help but think if SEB had been given the same run of 15 games as Doyle would he have scored more than 1? I know he as in fewer games and was looking red hot against liverpool.
Final word, lets all get behind the WOLVES and see what happens.

58 could your post be more contradictory? You start by having a pop at people for supporting MM and round off with a rallying call for everyone to get behind the team! Make your mind up pal!

Perhaps the happy clappers just want to support their club, get behind the team, celebrate success and not dwell on defeat with all the doom and gloom of some ‘supporters’!

We will be just fine, we’ve had a poor start, we know we can do better and still we are hovering around the required point a game mark! Second half of the season I am confident we will kick into gear and start to move away from the bottom! Something out of tomorrow will be s nice start!

Keep your feet on the ground. Not detracting anything from our win – it reminds me of our surprise win at White Hart Lane last season – but that performance by Liverpool was awful, rating with the worst I’ve ever seen from them at Anfield. Gerrard and Torres were not even trying. Mick is not wise or crafty enough to be a Prem manager and Moxey and Morgan surely know this. Remember, Roy Keane was right – Mick’s not an International OR Prem manager. We’re wasting our hard-earned place in the Prem. Mick should have gone at the end of last season as all we’ll ever do is fight relegation.

I see the moaners took 24 hours off, but they are back again today!

60 – Roy Keane has an opinion worth listening to? he has done nothing in management, that Mick has not already done! Mick has more Premiership and International experience than Keane will ever have.

Yes Liverpool did not play well but maybe it was because Wolves out fought and out played them? so what? we still beat them and have the 3 points!!

Happy Clappers we may be, but I travelled in hope to Anfield and enjoyed the victory.

I wonder how some of our fans can enjoy a Wolves win after they have been so critical of everyone involved with the club? it must stick in their throats to cheer for this team?

Mick McCarthy brought Stephen Ward to the club and has developed him from an Irish League player into a versatile Premiership Footballer – give them both some credit.

WOLF72…I have always been behind the team and will remain so forever. In relation to MICK I am not a FAN so I would have another boss, this is not personal it’s due to him not being good enough and brave enough at this level.I resepect his passion and sincerity.
I only ever have opinions on Mick not the club,so in my view if I dont think the Manager is upto it for various justified reasons it does not mean I stop supporting my club!I will still go into battle with the team even if the general in my opinion is making more wrong decisions then correct ones.
I can desert Mick never the club,a club that I have loved dearly from the age of 6 making it over 30yrs,born and bred in the area,Wolverhampton is and will always run through my veins. My father was seriously ill in hospital during are play-off win,and I watched the game on the net as he requested, and he passed away june 4th.Yet he always wanted Wolves back in the top leagues for all those years, and never got to see them, yes it is football but it is that important that’s why I want my beloved club to stay in the prem for as long as they can and not go down, due to management errors, that does not mean if Mick can get them progressing again that I will continue to not want him as our manager.Opinions can change but they have to be changed.
I have mostly followed WOLVES in the lower leagues and will do so again without a shawdow of doubt, but I beleive with my (head)that we should not be in this position,I only want us to stay in the premiership not concerned about winning and finishing in the top6-4 or even 10.Just for us to be WOLVES and play the game with players in there positions and play to win no matter the opposition,to play controlled and composed soccer with the head, and to use the squad available not to stick with favourites etc.
Mick may even leave the club even if we wanted him to stay,as he is not WOLVES from the deepest of depths, were as for me and many others we will remain behind them till our last breath.

Well done Sir Billy Quiet (62) on travelling up to Anfield. But I think it’s loyal fans like you that should be demanding something more for your time and money. For my own part I fly back from Sydney every time I can to watch us. I’m Wolves through and through but this management regime is embarrassingly bad and is an average Championship set-up at best.
