Wolves target Villa’s Curtis Davies
Tuesday 28th December 2010, 11:02AM GMT.
Wolves are weighing up moves for several targets in the January transfer window with Villa’s Curtis Davies and Middlesbrough’s David Wheater on their wish-list to strengthen their ailing defence.
Chief executive Jez Moxey admitted the level of their activity hinges on their injury crisis, while their rock bottom league position could affect their chances of signing players.
But they want a right-sided central defender regardless of whether Jody Craddock and Steven Mouyokolo are fit in a fortnight.
Manager Mick McCarthy has also targeted a left-back, combative midfielder and a striker when the window opens on Saturday after being handed the funds to strengthen his squad.
Wheater is a realistic possibility because of his age – 23 – and with his contract expiring next summer, he would be available for a knockdown £2m.
But Wolves face stiff competition to recruit a player who had a month’s loan at Molineux in McCarthy’s first season. Villa are also interested in the defender.
As for Wheater’s Boro team-mate Gary O’Neil, Wolves’ interest appears to be cooling.
Former Albion man Davies is another defender Wolves are looking at closely after he finally secured regular football on loan at Leicester.
Tottenham’s Jonathan Woodgate, who has been told by boss Harry Redknapp to go on loan, is also on the radar. “Like every club, we’re doing our homework on a lot of players at the moment,” said Moxey.
“We’re looking to strengthen the squad but we’re trying to ‘box clever’ and keeping our options open. We still have a chronic injury list and if we could get some of our players back, we might be less inclined to do some of the business we might be otherwise considering.”
Joleon Lescott’s £90,000-a-week earnings at Manchester City make it impossible for Wolves to consider loaning him.
Robbie Keane is only available on a permanent sale and his likely £6m fee is well beyond what Wolves would pay. And Wolves aren’t keen on risking a loan for Manchester City’s Michael Johnson, who last started a league game in August 2008, while they aren’t interested in Swansea’s Wolverhampton-born defender Ashley Williams.

Another striker !
Interesting considering we rarely play with 2 up front, someone to keep Fletcher company on the bench maybe. Sorry to sound cynical, but it sounds as if the club are in a mess. Maybe we will be allowed to transfer in some tactical nous as well !

More ‘Bench warmers’on the way.

if we dont spend some money on the defence we are doomed .. simples . and keane for 6 million does nt sound too bad to me

So Mick pays 7mil for Fletcher who he uses as a bench player…… Jeans is 6 million and now we can’t afford him. I despair.

Keane I meant lol
Report abuse
well well well maybe me and 20,000+ non experts called fans are not wrong. Mick’s finally realised what weve known all season- we need a left back, experienced central defender, combative midfielder who can pass the ball.
I think with a minus 17 goal difference and no away wins coming into the liverpool and West Ham away games,Mick may now accept that we cant defend. We either concede silly early or late goals and stearman, mayouko, elokobi, berra, ward are simply not good enough. Berra plays better alongside Craddock
I also think we need a striker who can play on the wings to challenge Hunt and Jarvis and cover injuries as he wont play Mujanji Bia. Doyle could do this job well with SEB or Fletch upfront but Mick wont play him there

£2-2.5m is the maximum 3Ms will pay for any player bought in January as THEY prepare for relegation.
Little knowledge of the Premiership.
Little ambition in the Premiership.
Little care for the Premiership.
All 3 should leave our club asap, they are as bad as each other.

Have now chandged my mind I don’t want MM to “get it right or get out”
I would like him out now having read this I wouldn’t give him another penny to waste on players to sit on our bench give the money to somebdy who can and will make a huge difference to our disillusioned players.
No striker required. To be honest I’d take whatever is available and split it 2 ways – a centre half who is a real leader and has some pace and a midfielder who has a good engine and can tackle. Wheater and Davis are no better than what we have, if we sign them then we will still play the second half of the season with Craddock and Berra as first choice. Of course whether we can attract players better than them is another question. Woodgate, Keane and Lescott are out of our league (not literally yet!)
What is the point of signing any new players because they will just join the long list of new players who are hardly ever played!
MM will just stick to his failed favorites!

Let’s be real here, which decent player is going to come here and risk ending up in the Championship next season….more speculative talk from the press…bahhhh!!!

Wolves don’t need another striker. Fletcher Blake and Doyle are good enough.
Premier league defenders are what they need.
Not championship players. Mick needs to bring in better quality than we already have, not players of the same or less ability.

Same old Wolves trawling the bargain basement for players no matter what the quality is.Wheater is next to useless check out what Middlesborough fans think of him,we are doomed to watch Championship football at prem prices because of an unrealistic wage cap.If we cant afford the longterm wages we should ship in quality prem loan players no matter the cost the alternative is the championship.I cant understand our lack of ambition look at West Ham who are about to take Wayne Bridge on loan or Bham that are talking to keane. We dont seem to value our Prem Status ,if we go down we will lose our best players and it could be years before we return. The owner seems transfixed on building this new 35,000 stadium but what use is that when you are pulling in 19000 crowds stuck in the Championship.

Can anyone give me the answer to these questions please?
1. Does anyone know if the company contracted to build our new stadium is owned by Steve Morgan?
If yes, then this exercise to build a new stadium is just to line Morgan’s pockets because we don’t need a 40000 seater stadium, we can’t fill a 29000 stadium.
2. What is the real reason why McCarthy is still manager, because I haven’t heard a valid reason yet? NO OTHER MANAGER would still be in charge at ANY CLUB AT ANY LEVEL with the same record as Mick.
3. Why do we NEVER EVER see Moxey or Morgan interviewed on TV?
4. Why are the fans being treated so disrespectfully?
In my opinion this situation stinks of corruption. The word FIFA comes in to mind. It’s all about MONEY and always will be.
I will defiantly not be renewing mine and my son’s season ticket if Mick McCarthy is still in charge. It is so embarrassing to watch and be associated with this shambles. I can’t believe the sheer arrogance and ignorance of the hierarchy in charge. Unfortunately, whatever is written on these pages makes no difference what so ever, it’s just a means of letting off steam, which is a good thing.
I read these pages every day and it’s been the same old story for months now. I think we just need to accept that it’s all political and money motivated and we as fans have no influence at all. As long as Morgan has our money up front via a season ticket then nothing will change. It’s really sad to admit that the only way the fans can make a difference is not to purchase tickets therefore money doesn’t come in to the club. That will hit home, but we all know (including Moxey and Morgan) that this will never happen because us as fans love our club and always will no matter what.
I really hope that there are big changes soon because I want to watch Premiership football next season, but I feel it’s too late now because I can’t see where our next win is coming from if we stick with this set up.
Anyway, that it from me now, a very disheartened wolves fan

dont think we need another striker, fletcher has played 5 games if u count his prem minutes on the pitch and scored 4 ,
i think an experienced defende in the short term is needed such as dunn we have young center halves who are panicking when under pressure.
hunt hasnt lived up to expectations and him on the left takes a lot away from jarvos game , so move jarvo back on the left and sign a right sided player not move edwards or foley there, and we all know we have wanted a left back for 3 seasons now so thats nothin new, there must be specualist players out there who can do a better job than playing people out of position

Deals have been done:
Wheater in talks
C Davis done a month ago
Dunne from Villa done
Johnson MCFC was coming will now go to Bolton
SEB being bidded on from Fulham
Doyle swap deal for Keane already done
Matty Jarvis will go to everton Anicibe coming the other way to replace SEB?

We need Woodgate on loan, we need Bridge on loan, we need Robbie Kean on loan and we need a decent midfielder on loan. Why all loans? 1. Because no one would want to come here if they thought for one minute they’d be in the Championship next season and 2. We can’t afford the asking costs and wages that these players would demand.
I dont understand, We’ve got wardy… He’s that good he can play for 70 mins as a striker and then 20 as a left back? What’s the problem.. I reckon he’d make a great centre half..
why dont we just recall Keogh and Halford and save our money. This club doesnt have the ambition to sign anyone who will make a difference so let’s all face it, we are going down and mick will be there next year.
amazing how quiet the lunatics are.. eh sir billy, brummie rob et al.

Firstly a change of manager wont change a thing. Morgan wont pay the wages of better players.
I still want muppet Mick out because of his tactics. I would not let him spend any more because the new players wont play.
Dont blame Jez because its Moxley that wont pay the wages.
Jez is told home much to spend then Mick tries to find them. It’s not easy finding premiership players for 200,000k.
Morgan is the problem, no ambition, only looking to make a quick quid out of us.
Have we spent 60 million pounds from the sky money in the last 2 years? I don’t think so!
No wonder he did not bye Liverpool. They would not sell to him because he could not take Liverpool forward ie new ground, quality players.
As part of our world cup bid Liverpool were getting a new ground built payed for by the fa.
Morgan out now please!
I have been saying all season that we are trying to play premiership football with championship defenders, we need people like woodgate to steady the defence and a joey barton TYPE of midfielder no problem with the forwards as long as Mick changes the pecking order with Doyle as third choice

Why cannot Moxey just say,”we know that our fans are crying out for us to sign a number of quality footballers and we will do our best to sign some”. No more garbage about boxing clever please, was signing Maierhofer instead of Carroll boxing clever? As I have said on here many times,Moxey is great at buying pies.Let us have some footballers please.Surely those in the Bordroom could see that Wigan had quality players with pace, power and skill. Is it too much to ask for us to have some, after all it is not even there own money, they should still be spending Sir Jack’s.
Sorry typo, should be Boardroom ,the bored people were in the stands. And wrong there, should be “their”. Now I have tried to correct my mistakes, how about the Board doing the same.
A striker? Isn’t our bench full of strikers (unless Doyle’s off).
Combative midfielder. Maybe?
A centre Half, now we’re getting there.
A left back. By George I think he’s got it.
Another thing, here’s a simple maths lesson.
Joleon Lescott at 90k a week is probably 60k a week more than we want to pay, now there’a about 20 weeks of the season remaining, so that equals about 1.2 million. Or we stick with what we have and get relegated to the championship which would cost us around 60 million. Lesson over!
For those of you not clever enough to understand, The Hawthorns is in West Bromwich.
A left back- I bet Ward is shaking in his boots, didnt Wolves sign one early in the season- what happened to him. This is desperate times folks.
no 36 we are bottom of the league with minus 17 goal difference. We are managed by a manager who used to be a central defender but we cant Defend as a team and he wouldnt know a good central defender if he saw one.I have a good memory Remember Collins, Ward, breen and now we have stearman, mayokolo, elokobi, ward and Berra The names change but they all have something in common. They are not premiership defenders
We have conceded late and early goals all but one of the 18 or so games we played. We havent won any away games and you call it bad luck.
how many games did the “highly rated” van damme start and finish?
How many games did guediora start before he got injured?
Our “combative captain’ missed 3 games of his own accord when he lost his marbles and lost us the game to wigan.
Now if Mick and Jez can get to sign a real defender like woodgate, dunne or lescott we have a chance. He could have signed Scharner who is an experienced prem defender on a free but chose to waste 2 million on Mayoukolo. Now who would you say made the better choice Matteo or Mick?
Just managed to dodge the flight cancellations and get back from Oz in time to see the Wigan debacle. Problem is we have too many players who fool us with the odd Premiership performance and then get together to produce a Championship embarrassment lke that.
Richard Stearman being star of the show with Zubar, Milijas and Foley playing supporting roles. Unless we can get some consistency from the like, and some meaningful signings in the window we will slip further behind over the next few weeks.
Or we could do what England cricketers have done, show some resolve and no mean talent, and come back from that dire showing at Perth.
I know a lot of you blame MM, but, how can he cater for Stearman going walkabout and giving two goals away like that ? …… and he almost got a hat trick !
Bangkok Wolf. What right have you to refer to McCarthy as ‘muppet Mick’ after he took a deadbeat team and did what no other manager has done since th seventies. Get us into the top flight and keep us there. The man deserves more respect than that whether it’s the end of the road for him at Molineux or not.
How can we give any credence to a so called fan like you who calls for our chairman’s head , a chairman who has so far acted sensibly in this crazy Premiership we are part of.
You certainly need to get a grasp of the problems that Liverpool have faced over the last few seasons.
So you reckon Morgan wasn’t allowed to buy Liverpool because he couldn’t afford a new ground and quality players ?( I presume you mean buy, not bye, thicko) So where exactly did the infamous American Chuckle Brothers, who were forced out and lost a fortune, fit into this ambitious little story of yours ?
The problems are beginning to dawn on a number of other Premiership clubs who have spent way, way beyond their means, but, brainless fans like you couldn’t care less whether it’s Pol Pot or Mother Theresa who keeps ploughing money in.
Why don’t we get Andy Keogh back? I know most of you don’t like him but he puts in a shift every match
We need a centre half who is quick and reads the game
We need to change tactic to actually get the ball out wide to Hunty and Jarvo, get rid of Bent or play him!! Get Fletch on from the start with Doyle and lets try attacking teams, sign Lescott whatever it takes
Report abuse
LOOK…..nothing will happen regarding McNumpty…..nothing
If we get any result against Morgans beloved liverpool then i’m afraid McNumpty will have
a job for life at Wolves!
I can not see McNumpty losing his job simply because Wolves have already geared up for relegation. The Morgan – Moxey partnership think our wonderful manager is the only manager who can get us promoted again! They see a title chasing championship side, with the parachute payments from the EPL, as a bigger money making operation than a relegation certainty!
We are all in for a very uncomfortable couple of seasons as our better players – Jarvis (who McNumpty only played because of injuries and prefered his son Ward previously) Jones, Millijas, Fletcher (why doesn’t he play him?)
McNumpty, Moxey and Morgan are in this for other reasons….as some of you have correctly pointed out – How many other managers in any other division would still be in a job with the shocking results that McNumpty has delivered.
We need a big broom to sweep the corridors of Molineux from top to bottom and allow us to have a fresh start in 2011 – wishful thinking from me
