Wolves target Villa’s Curtis Davies

Wolves are weighing up moves for several targets in the January transfer window with Villa’s Curtis Davies and Middlesbrough’s David Wheater on their wish-list to strengthen their ailing defence.

Chief executive Jez Moxey admitted the level of their activity hinges on their injury crisis, while their rock bottom league position could affect their chances of signing players.

But they want a right-sided central defender regardless of whether Jody Craddock and Steven Mouyokolo are fit in a fortnight.

Manager Mick McCarthy has also targeted a left-back, combative midfielder and a striker when the window opens on Saturday after being handed the funds to strengthen his squad.

Wheater is a realistic possibility because of his age – 23 – and with his contract expiring next summer, he would be available for a knockdown £2m.

But Wolves face stiff competition to recruit a player who had a month’s loan at Molineux in McCarthy’s first season. Villa are also interested in the defender.

As for Wheater’s Boro team-mate Gary O’Neil, Wolves’ interest appears to be cooling.

Former Albion man Davies is another defender Wolves are looking at closely after he finally secured regular football on loan at Leicester.

Tottenham’s Jonathan Woodgate, who has been told by boss Harry Redknapp to go on loan, is also on the radar. “Like every club, we’re doing our homework on a lot of players at the moment,” said Moxey.

“We’re looking to strengthen the squad but we’re trying to ‘box clever’ and keeping our options open. We still have a chronic injury list and if we could get some of our players back, we might be less inclined to do some of the business we might be otherwise considering.”

Joleon Lescott’s £90,000-a-week earnings at Manchester City make it impossible for Wolves to consider loaning him.

Robbie Keane is only available on a permanent sale and his likely £6m fee is well beyond what Wolves would pay. And Wolves aren’t keen on risking a loan for Manchester City’s Michael Johnson, who last started a league game in August 2008, while they aren’t interested in Swansea’s Wolverhampton-born defender Ashley Williams.

Interesting considering we rarely play with 2 up front, someone to keep Fletcher company on the bench maybe. Sorry to sound cynical, but it sounds as if the club are in a mess. Maybe we will be allowed to transfer in some tactical nous as well !

well well well maybe me and 20,000+ non experts called fans are not wrong. Mick’s finally realised what weve known all season- we need a left back, experienced central defender, combative midfielder who can pass the ball.
I think with a minus 17 goal difference and no away wins coming into the liverpool and West Ham away games,Mick may now accept that we cant defend. We either concede silly early or late goals and stearman, mayouko, elokobi, berra, ward are simply not good enough. Berra plays better alongside Craddock
I also think we need a striker who can play on the wings to challenge Hunt and Jarvis and cover injuries as he wont play Mujanji Bia. Doyle could do this job well with SEB or Fletch upfront but Mick wont play him there

No striker required. To be honest I’d take whatever is available and split it 2 ways – a centre half who is a real leader and has some pace and a midfielder who has a good engine and can tackle. Wheater and Davis are no better than what we have, if we sign them then we will still play the second half of the season with Craddock and Berra as first choice. Of course whether we can attract players better than them is another question. Woodgate, Keane and Lescott are out of our league (not literally yet!)

Can anyone give me the answer to these questions please?

    1. Does anyone know if the company contracted to build our new stadium is owned by Steve Morgan?
If yes, then this exercise to build a new stadium is just to line Morgan’s pockets because we don’t need a 40000 seater stadium, we can’t fill a 29000 stadium.

    2. What is the real reason why McCarthy is still manager, because I haven’t heard a valid reason yet? NO OTHER MANAGER would still be in charge at ANY CLUB AT ANY LEVEL with the same record as Mick.

    3. Why do we NEVER EVER see Moxey or Morgan interviewed on TV?

    4. Why are the fans being treated so disrespectfully?

In my opinion this situation stinks of corruption. The word FIFA comes in to mind. It’s all about MONEY and always will be.

I will defiantly not be renewing mine and my son’s season ticket if Mick McCarthy is still in charge. It is so embarrassing to watch and be associated with this shambles. I can’t believe the sheer arrogance and ignorance of the hierarchy in charge. Unfortunately, whatever is written on these pages makes no difference what so ever, it’s just a means of letting off steam, which is a good thing.

I read these pages every day and it’s been the same old story for months now. I think we just need to accept that it’s all political and money motivated and we as fans have no influence at all. As long as Morgan has our money up front via a season ticket then nothing will change. It’s really sad to admit that the only way the fans can make a difference is not to purchase tickets therefore money doesn’t come in to the club. That will hit home, but we all know (including Moxey and Morgan) that this will never happen because us as fans love our club and always will no matter what.

I really hope that there are big changes soon because I want to watch Premiership football next season, but I feel it’s too late now because I can’t see where our next win is coming from if we stick with this set up.

Anyway, that it from me now, a very disheartened wolves fan

I still want muppet Mick out because of his tactics. I would not let him spend any more because the new players wont play.
Dont blame Jez because its Moxley that wont pay the wages.
Jez is told home much to spend then Mick tries to find them. It’s not easy finding premiership players for 200,000k.
Morgan is the problem, no ambition, only looking to make a quick quid out of us.
Have we spent 60 million pounds from the sky money in the last 2 years? I don’t think so!
No wonder he did not bye Liverpool. They would not sell to him because he could not take Liverpool forward ie new ground, quality players.

    Combative midfielder. Maybe?
A centre Half, now we’re getting there.
A left back. By George I think he’s got it.
Another thing, here’s a simple maths lesson.
Joleon Lescott at 90k a week is probably 60k a week more than we want to pay, now there’a about 20 weeks of the season remaining, so that equals about 1.2 million. Or we stick with what we have and get relegated to the championship which would cost us around 60 million. Lesson over!

    LOOK…..nothing will happen regarding McNumpty…..nothing

If we get any result against Morgans beloved liverpool then i’m afraid McNumpty will have
a job for life at Wolves!

I can not see McNumpty losing his job simply because Wolves have already geared up for relegation. The Morgan – Moxey partnership think our wonderful manager is the only manager who can get us promoted again! They see a title chasing championship side, with the parachute payments from the EPL, as a bigger money making operation than a relegation certainty!

We are all in for a very uncomfortable couple of seasons as our better players – Jarvis (who McNumpty only played because of injuries and prefered his son Ward previously) Jones, Millijas, Fletcher (why doesn’t he play him?)

McNumpty, Moxey and Morgan are in this for other reasons….as some of you have correctly pointed out – How many other managers in any other division would still be in a job with the shocking results that McNumpty has delivered.

Then I wake up and find Wolves are being run by McCarthy SAYS IT ALL!!!

A striker???? Whilst we are not converting all of our chances we are scoring. We have Fletcher warming the bench, rarely play 2 up front.
Is it just me and 20000 other real fans who think our priority is a central defender, followed by a left back, then a combative midfielder. Spooky, we knew this last season.
This is why I keep banging on about Mick’s inability to make proactive moves. Either during a match or throughout the season. Everything he does is reactive.
What about Richard Dunne, experienced defender who played well under Mr O’Neil. Is the Portsmouth left back from last season still around. I think he was Morrocan or Egyptian. What about the boy who was on loan from Spurs to Pompey last season. There are players out there.
