Wolves’ Stephen Hunt hoping to kick on
Tuesday 30th November 2010, 1:44PM GMT.
Stephen Hunt today insisted his first goal for Wolves could be the spark for his elusive form – after admitting being “hopeless”.
Hunt equalised against the Sunderland on Saturday after being dropped before fellow substitute Sylvan Ebanks-Blake grabbed a dramatic late winner in the much-needed 3-2 success.
“I’ve been nowhere near my best and not playing even average so to score gave me great confidence and a real lift,” said Republic of Ireland winger Hunt.
“I’ve no complaints whatsoever — now I’ve scored we might see the old Stephen Hunt.
“As soon as the goal went in it gave me a massive lift and took a weight off my shoulders.
“I’m fed up with being hard on myself so I’ve enjoyed that goal — it was my most important one in a long time.”
Manager Mick McCarthy axed summer signing Hunt after four starts.
The 29-year-old has made eight appearances in all but has completed 90 minutes just once, in the Carling Cup defeat at Manchester United after eight months out with a serious foot injury.
Hunt, who cost £3m when he signed from Hull, said he could have no complaints about being dropped from the side.
“What can I say to the gaffer? I’ve been hopeless for the last few games,” he said.
“I haven’t come back the way I wanted to and I’ve had a mental block for the last couple of weeks so maybe the manager was right to leave me out.
“I’ve got no complaints. I haven’t been at my best since I came back.
“I’m not stupid, I know I haven’t been right.”
But the former Reading wideman is confident his form will return.
“It will come — I know it will,” he said.
“I haven’t had a bad run like this for three or four years, but I’ll get my head down and work through it.
“I think it’s more about confidence than anything.
“But luckily when I went on I was in the right place at the right time to score.
“It’s typical of me to get that type of goal and it will give me great confidence.
“I got a lift from it so I’m buzzing.
“I’m still not where I want to be in terms of fitness so I can go past people, but that will come.”
