Wolves sell Jelle van Damme to Liege
Monday 29th November 2010, 4:30PM GMT.
Wolves have confirmed the £2.5million sale of rebel left-back Jelle van Damme back to Belgium – just five months after signing him.
The 27-year-old has joined Standard Liege on a three-and-a-half year deal to end his Molineux misery.
Wolves had been negotiating with two Belgian clubs, with Liege and another team sending representatives to meet chief executive Jez Moxey in England over the last 10 days.
Moxey told the Express & Star: “I can confirm we have agreed a deal for Jelle van Damme to join Standard Liege and it should be all completed overnight.”
Both Anderlecht – who sold him to Wolves – and Brugge had shown an interest in the Belgium international.
Despite big talk from the player when he joined about being a leader and setting an example, Van Damme never settled in England and became homesick when his pregnant wife returned to Belgium.
She gave birth to a baby girl last weekend.
Van Damme, who also had an unsuccessful spell at Southampton from 2004 to 2006, made just six appearances for Wolves.
And the sale brings to an end one of the club’s biggest disasters in the transfer market in recent years.
The only triumph for Wolves was getting every penny back on the deal, which will be completed once the transfer window opens in January.
Only last month, manager Mick McCarthy angrily insisted van Damme was ‘going nowhere.’
Standard announced on their official website this afternoon that talks had been concluded and that a press conference was being arranged to unveil the 27-year old defender.
The statement added that Van Damme was undergoing a medical at the University Hospital of Liege and was due to appear at a press briefing at the club’s academy Robert Louis-Dreyfus this afternoon.
Sources in Belgium believe he will remain in Liege and train there, prior to the transfer window opening in January.

Excellent bit of business by the three M´s there. One has to wonder who did or didn´t do their homework on this one.
So our center foward of the future will keep his place at left back then. Or, dare I hope, since WE DECIDED to sell Jelle, that our Whizz management will bring in a REAL left back in January, maybe even play him at center forward?
Its a shame that player power has made contracts worthless to clubs, but at lease we got our money back and can strengthen in January.
Its also a shame that comments have closed on the ‘numptie’ page, I was going to thank all the numpties that posted on there and proved that Mick is abslolutely right about them!
Good business to get the money back, what a waste of time & effort. Looked a decent player but if he didn’t want to wear the shirt get rid….well done moxey, but lets remember we do actually need a quality left back!!!! so come January lets get a good left back in that wants to play for us! UTW ….
I think I speak on behalf of all Wolves fans when I humbly thank Jelle for all his efforts over the last five months, and state without equivocation that his massive contribution to our fight against relegation, will never be forgotten in our lifetimes. He can leave with his head held high, safe in the knowledge that he will forever enjoy a place in all of our hearts. Gone, Jelle, but never forgotten!
With his record of 2004-2006 he should never have been signed, like many more of the others we have made over the last two seasons.
Good business to get the money back.
He looked like the sort of player we needed, its better he’s gone, nice to see we get our money back for a change! Go get a good defender. well done sat.

“the sale brings to an end one of the club’s biggest disasters in the transfer market in recent years”.
You used the same words to describe when Stefan Maierhofer went out on loan.
But the biggest disaster in the clubs recent transfer market is simple Mick McCarthy!!
He buys players but won’t upset his regulars and play them!!
Why are players expected to be happy and not complain when they are signed and quite obviously told they will play and then to be stuck on the bench wondering why the hell they signed for this clown of a manager.
Look at Stephen Fletcher £7mil and can hardly get any time on the pitch.
The problem is not with the players it’s with the manager, it is happening far to often now. Get Rid.

See ya, wouldn’t wanna be ya’ Daft muppet declares his undying love for Anderlecht and then signs for one of their big rivals. Nice one! Now here’s your cards, give us your keys and clear off!!!!!!!!
Ah well, good riddence to bad rubbish!
Now use that, and get someone like Curtis Davis!
This guy wasn’t a rebel or disaster. How do I know, because he lives next door but one to me…
I think if he had been given a chance, and by chance I mean a run of games at left back or centre half and not in midfield, he would have been a great player.
Really pity, now, how about us signing some decent players now rather than some £200k bloke from nice with an appalling goal scoring record???
Bottom line….If he isn’t happy he has to go.
Why keep a player that would be disrupting the dressing room. It’s a shame as he did show some quality. Now though with that £2.5m back in the kitty it may go towards a better player in January or the summer.

May have got every penny of the transfer fee back, what about his grossly inflated wages, accomodation etc, what a waste of time and money
SACK MM NOW !!!!!!!!
Well done jez on getting our money back. Now it’s time to get on the leftback scout list and get a proven player who will wear the old gold and black with pride.
Well done to Mick and the lads, that never say die attitude and a strike of luck got us three valuable points, hope there’s more to follow. Bring on the boggies

May have got all transfer back, what about the wages, signing on fe, agents fees, accomodation etc

Haha typical. Shows the loyalty of footballers these days….
Who shall we spend the money on, then?
Decent player but never settled. Obvious everytime he went away on international duty and spoke to his national press.
Credit to Moxey for not making a loss and recouping the £2.5 million. Moxey gets a lot of undue criticism but he really is one of the best in the business in comparison to some of his peers. I really am proud of the way our Club is run, sensibly and progressively.
Hopefully that’s £2.5 million we can use in January, possibly on Ashley Williams from Swansea?
To grease the wheels of the deal, throw in Stephen Ward, free of charge.

Goodbye and thanks for your 100% commitement….NOT

i suspect the main resaon van damme has gone back to belgian is the fact his wife has stayed in Belgium, which to be fair you can see where shes coming from so if this is the case then a shame, but no doubt there will be allsorts of stories coming out from now on.
to be honest i think the club has done well to recoup the fee, plus i dont buy the want away and rebel element, he turned up to training and was in the squad so suspect no fall out with the manager. I met Jelle after the villa game and he seemed like a nice guy he was as gutted as me by the result.
dont forget the ol papers like to make stuff up, papers make stuff up never
anyway theres £2.5 mil to but someone else now
Report abuse
Stephen Ward’s seen him off then!
As long as we got our money back – good riddance!
Can’t help but think good riddance really. He was ok at best. Never going to push any of our left sided players out of the first team.
If they don’t wanna play for us, get rid otherwise we r stuck with them e.g the hoff!!!!!
well guess that was always going to be the case with him saying he wasn’t happy playing for us so lets get rid of the rest of the dead wood and players who just aren’t upto the job of playing in the premier league i.e richard stearman who does not install confidence at all and have no idea why mm play’s him or maybe he is just one of toughs so called favourite’s i keep hearing about.on another note ive recently read that mm has lost the dressing room with players on about the favourite issue and the fact that he keeps playing players out of position not to mention the system which some of them aren’t happy with.so it does not exactly install confidence and just wonder how long it takes before he totally looses the dressing room.this came from a player who was talking to someone last friday well we won the match but have not won the battle yet
Report abuse
please mr morgan use this money and more to invest in a quality left back.A good centre half aswell and were not far away from being a good side.i really hope we are still in the pack come january as this could be key to who we bring in
Report abuse
its understandable if he was home sick,
lots of people i work with have never travelled outside the midlands, i know belgium is only up the road in world terms but even so i get his view , the other main point is why keep a player who is unhappy?.
and we got back the money we paid for him and can spend that on a proper left back instead of ward. utw
Report abuse
good riddance!!!

He’s made Steve Claridge and Robert Taylor look like Wolves legends!!
Come on the 3M’s, the bargain basement don’t exist when it comes to the premier league. get the cheque book out and show some ambition!!
Dear me, what a cock up…I just cant understand these type of players, Let’s hope Wolves buy British in the future and end this kind of nonsense. Thankfully we got our money back. Wonder if he gave back his transfer fee??? Doubt it..Anyway, he’s in the past now… Jelly Van who???

Another massive addition is waving goodbye. Some of the scouts should be going with him. Mick can at least start looking for a new left-back. JtH.
You have to judge a manager on the strengh of his signings and micks summer deals for the money spent have been disasterous .
Like van damme, they all talked big when they arrived but have failed to impress or even get a regular place in the side.Fletcher being played out of position so much hasnt really helped him.
With injuries to key players now the talk is over and these and other squad players have to do the business.I
Is it me but is Mujangi bia on loan to us? If so Why doesnt he get any time on the pitch even as sub to see what he can do? If anything happens to Jarvis we have no real attacking winger apart from hunt and that worries me!!
Another point didnt MM say he saw something in Halford in close season to keep him? So why is he out on loan and not in the squad?
The only good news about van damme is we got our money back. credit to Moxley.
At least hes off the wage bill must have been a descent bit great news we have got the full cash back to us.
Glad it wasnt another camara saga????
Just hope we can utilise the transfer market and finally make a statement to others in the league……..

how much have we sold him for and now buy a good left back. i want lee wallace from hearts and also get andrew driver also from hearts because hunt has been a let down driver is like matty but faster
Report abuse
we now need a premiership standard left back but only if mick decides to keep george centre back which i hope he does!
just need the 7.5m for fletcher & the 2.5 for molyoko & we will all be happy!
Waste of a spot in our 25 man squad, instead of strengthening us he has weakend us!
Responsibility for this failure rests 100% with the “player”, in my view.
When you consider the money we have to pay individuals like this, as well as the money to set up the deals, you expect absolute professionalism. Van Damme, you are as bad as Camera..
Every deal is a risk.. The only way to ensure 100% success in the transfer market is to never buy anyone! Fair play to the management team for getting rid with minimal loss.
I don’t buy into this “sign em and you have to give em a run in the team” – THEY HAVE GOT TO EARN THEIR PLACE IN THE TEAM!!!
Otherwise it’s not fair to the rest of the squad who kept us up /got us promoted in the first place! Why should they have to give up their place to some big time charlie who ain’t doing it in training, while they are grafting?

Bye, thanks for nothing.

Agree with you , Simon, re Mujangi Bia…he has been playing well in the reserves and was impressive when he came on v Notts Co. He’s the only other player apart from Jarvis with genuine blistering pace….and he has a good shot on him and he’s an international and he has more control than dear old Steve kindon ever had !!!!

Wayne Bridge on a six-month loan deal? I’m sure moneybags City could stump up half his wages. If he wants to earn his money playing football, that is.

Didn’t Mark Davies look good for Bolton on MOTD,running at people through the middle with pace and close ball control.IF ONLY.Providing he stays fit he will be another ex Wolves player who will play for England. We virtually gave him away by not tying him down on a long term contract.

The least he can do is give us his best till he goes, thanks for getting his own way. this deal has cost wolves a few 100k in signin on fees and all that goes along with signing these over rated and paid bags of wind.

Another one of MCCarthy’s buys.
I bet MM’s wife dreads Xmas as some of the presents he has bought for her lie in a basket in the loft.
McCarthy can talk the talk to a foreigner or some lad in the lower divisions but reality for them strikes home when they see the man at work.
MM you must depart ASAP.
What is wrong with Fletcher?
He scored enough in the Prem last season for Burnley but he obviously cannot perform for MM.
Still we still have Ward.
Good bit of business getting money back. But why was he bought in the first place, did vandamme get a real chance to prove his worth, continually left out of the team by a certain s ward who we all know is the weakest left back in the premier. go and buy a decent left back.
When he signed he shot his mouth off about being a leader on the pitch.
Once he experienced the pace and quality of the Premiership he bcame homesick…..
This failure is down to the player not the club, he had played in England before so should have been aware of what’s required.
To those harping on about sacking Mick and getting a left back in, give it a rest you are very boring……
Stephen Ward – Premiership Left Back.

If Jez Moxey has really got the clubs money back, and it’s not just more spin, then he deserves congratulations for a fine piece of negotiation.

so we get the £2.5 million back for van damme where now ? elokobi or ward to fill that gap at the back and the £2.5 million back in to morgans bank account. its past a joke unless we sign a decent left back and one who wants to play for the club then its them 2 CHAMPIONSHIP players who will be our season left backs . out all the signings MM as made i.e fletcher, milijas, hunt, mouyokolo, doyle, zubar van damme,maeirhofer,guedioura,halford,.10 players nearlly a full team only 1 player out that 10 is gaurenteed first team football ? DOYLE. correct me if im wrong take these 10 out of the squad and were left with the championship squad that we had that went up ok yeah good enough for the championship not for the premier leauge . so mick im no statatician but surely that aint good enough for us the fans and US the club.

Should try and get Fabio on loan from united!
Also Jamie O’Hara from Spurs (if he is fit)… On Loan till the end of the season!

Perhaps he didnt wanna play in the championship lol

It was obvious he was finding it difficult to stay in England when his family were in Belgium.
Blame should not be pointed towards anyone at the Club other than the player himself. He had already stated in an interview when he signed that although he found it difficult when he played for Sunderland he was now fully ready and committed to playing for Wolves. We have no room for players who are not fully committed to Wolves.
Well done for getting the money back we paid for him.

Another spectacularly bad buy chalked up to our hallowed leaders. Lets hope that they do their homework before buying someone else, better still get rid of the muppet and employ someone who will get some average players. Average would be better than what we have now. One more thing, BRING BACK THE COMMENTS!!!!!!!

Hmmm, they didn’t get their money back, Standard only paid 1.5 Million. Haha, what a steal.

Well said No.8 kb.I wonder why we bought this great leader in the first place given his history at Southampton. Now we have to wait and see what mess the Muppet makes of getting a replacement mind you given his track record the advert will probably read:Wanted, one centre-forward to play at left back must not be homesick but must have leadership qualities.
For some players, they need a little more hand holding when moving to a new area. Mick’s record with foreign/non-English signings isn’t particularly good – only Guedioura has been a success. Milijas has been a tough one to crack – but it looks like it could be a success now (despite Mick’s best efforts). And to be fair, the list of foreign failures goes way back before Mick – Sami Al Jabr, Silas, Okoronkwo, Maierhoffer, Frankowski to name a few.
We can all question why JVD came here, knowing that his wife was expecting and staying in Belgium. And it can’t have been nice finding out your next door neighbour but one is RichWolf64. But we seem to have a much higher percentage of foreign failures than other teams. Is it just bad luck or has this happened to many times to be just a coincidence.
I remember when we first signed a 19-year old Carlton Cole on loan (from Chelsea). He said at the time that he arrived at Wolverhampton station and there was no-one to meet him from the club and no arrangements for accomodation had been made. He walked to the nearest hotel and checked himself in. I know footballers are a pampered species but this is just common courtesy – or in the case of signed players – protecting your investment.

Which Numptie decided to sign ths bloke?. Naughty Numpty please do your homework next time or you will be sent back to the land of cloth caps whippets and pigeons.

Probably the worse, most clueless player i have seen down the molineux in ages closely followed by darren potter. He was meant to be playing at left back or left wing in a game, but when the ball was over on the right hand side he used to sprint to the other side of the pitch and chase the ball, leaving all of the spae on the left side, absolute donkey waste of space, best thing all season since man city win and SEB goal against sunderland. Now get a proper defender in mick!!!
Dont you just love how it says ”
And the sale brings to an end one of the club’s biggest disasters in the transfer market in recent years.” Dont make me laugh since we have gone up apart from hunt doyle and milijas all the other signings have been a disaster!!!!
Seemed like a decent bloke, tried hard when on the pitch, but clearly out of position at left wing – obviously a defender but after the pre-season game at Leeds where Max Gradel gave him the run around was not played in his preferred position again.
At least we appear to have got our money back – so well done Moxey.
In the transfer window we need:-
Goalkeeper (6’4 +)- USA will be gone in the summer
Left back – Ward and Elokobi as popular as they are with MM are not upto the premier league standard.
Left footed centre back (6’3+) – Jo Lescott on loan?
Left Footed Midfielder
Striker (6’4+) – Not the guy from Nice – 31, 1 goal in 23 outings last season – if we sign him a future centre half then!
To leave in the transfer window
Carl Ikeme
Greg Halford
Michael Mancienne – Return to Chelsea
Dave Jones – if he does not want to sign a new contract – should have been sorted in the summer)
Marcus Bent – Return to Blues – signed but not given an oppportunity – heard that before?
Congratulations to the lads for the win on Saturday – its a start but we need to back this up with a result at Blackburn – expect that to be a tough game as I think the 7 Blackburn players “injured” for the trip to MUFC will remarkably be fit to face Wolves – don’t see a fine going Blackburn’s way though.

Why waste more money on another left back who won’t play ? Surely that money could be better spent on redeveloping the car park or adding more empty seats ! The reason IMV why we keep ending up with championship quality players is because we only pay championship wages . Even if citeh pay half towards the weekly pay packets of Bridge & Lescott we would STILL be paying them about 20 grand a week MORE than our highest paid players ! Will GM allow that don’t think so .

Number 42: classic comment, that has made me smile!

What a shame a champions league left back too. It’s difficult to say really he shouldn’t of come here if he knew his wife wasn’t coming when she was pregnant but i do feel for him i’d want to leave too knowing i’m behind Ward to start a game. Maybe more pitch time would of helped who knows. He was a decent defender and he’ll go on to play champions league football again. All the best to him. I just hope that when January comes we go out and get a decent left back and another midfielder (attack minded). I’d rather not see us bid for the striker from France his recored isn’t screaming quality. Plus we have goalscorers in SEB & Fletcher they just need some more pitch time. Blackburn will be a tough game especially after there drubbing the weekend. Hopefully another win and we’re moving in the right direction before it’s too late.
Now go and get Wayne Bridge to show some real commitment to the fans.

I’ve also seen a shout for Curtis Davis on here. I think that’s not a bad shout but doesn’t solve the left back problem we have. I’d love to see Jo Lescott back but i’m a realist it won’t happen if it does it would be towards the end of his career. What about Fabio on loan for the remainder? I’d like to say Gibbs but again probably unrealistic? Who would we like to see there, who is there that would join that would be comfortable in the Premier league? Tough one to call really!!!
Will be hard to get a decent left back in January, as any decent ones will want to be kept by their clubs until the end of the season. We missed a good chance to sort this out by not doing our homework on Van Damme.
Well its not a total disater, at least we got what paid for him, i think though we should have done more research on him prior to buying him? As he had the same problems at Southampton? So why would things be any different at Wolves? Anyway lets use the money on a position which is more of a priority a top class CH, and there is one going at Man City in Joelean Lescott? they are reported to be willing to sell him for less than half the £17M they paid for him. So why dont we use the JVD cash plus Sell Dave Jones /Matt Hill and any other surplus to requirements players, and use the money off their transfers to buy JL for about £6M-8M, and use the collective wages of those players to help pay his wages?? As their is no way MM will play anyone other than Stephen Ward at LB if he’s fit? Plus we’ve got George Elokobi as cover. Lescott would be a ‘TOP QUALITY’ signing and a very good CAPTAIN? UTW:
Let’s get Naylor off of Cardiff! He’s scoring for ‘em, he’s class, we know he’d be committed to the cause too…
Report abuse
Use it for Lescott’s wages for 6 Months Loan bring him in and save our season. Will save us the £60 Million + we will lose if we stick with the defence we have when we go down.
This is the best outcome from a rather sorry saga. He’s got his wish to go back to Belgium and we’ve got our money back.
I have not got much sympathy for the player as he knew what England was like when he played for Southampton.
Seemed to have some talent but not that special.
I would say this was a bad bit of scouting. He certainly has looked good in patches but I doubt very much whether he has the stamina to last 90 minutes of the Premiership on a regular basis.
We will need to recruit at left back now. Ward on Saturday was excellent going forward but he is not a proper left back and backs off too often. Elokobi looked better at centre back also. Mancienne, Foley or Zubar are not really left footers. The other option is a youngster who I think will be class, Scott Malone, but they are not going to gamble on youngsters like him, Batth, Gorman etc.
Yes! (72 Humber Wolf) The issue is NOT Van Damme’s effort (he has always tried hard, first team and reserves), it IS the scouting system. He was clearly left standing by anyone with any pace. Jelle was bought as the first choice left back, but it was very quickly found out that he was going to get skinned on a regular basis.
Now we NEED a quality left back (can we get Lescott on loan, only paying a ‘Wolves’ contribution’ to his salary?) and a quality midfielder (yes, in the Scott Parker/Mark Davies mould!) in the January window.
The other three ‘big’ Summer signings of Hunt, Fletcher and Muoyokolo WILL all be good additions. Hunt and Muoyokolo (in place of Stearman)should regularly start, with Doyle/Ebanks-Blake and Fletcher sharing the one/two places up front.
Jelle was bound to wobble

Shame we can’t get rid of some of our numpty know nothing fans as easily, the internet would be a far better place without some of them
Report abuse
There´s another story floating around about Jelle having a bust up with our managerial messiah. So, a new view from Micks commenting numpties perhaps? Seems our manager is a spiteful old center half and a half.
Seeing as Ward is such a good left back and we´ve now got 2.5 million to spend again, we could actually go out a get a player worth er 2.5 million. Shall we switch to the other story and take it from there…..?
I knew there had to be underlying reasons for him not to be playing (or want to be here for that matter), just about everyone on here is condemning him, yet I wonder how many of you, if you lived in a foreign country and your missus goes home, wouldn’t want to go home as well? Its been disappointing granted, but at least we got our money back, which hopefully will be used to get a decent left back in. More worrying for me is the form (or lack of it) of Fletcher, his goals were supposed to not only keep us up but help us finish even higher in the table. I know he’s been played out of position a lot, but true goal scorers (and this guys an international for God’s sake)get goals where ever they play.
