Win a turning point for Wolves boss
Monday 29th November 2010, 3:00PM GMT.
Relieved Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has claimed Saturday’s much-needed victory over Sunderland is a turning point in their season.
And McCarthy denied his own position had been in danger.
Wolves came back from 2-1 down with nine minutes left to beat the Black Cats 3-2 to end a run of four defeats and nine losses in 11.
Their third victory of the season lifted Wolves to within three points of safety.
McCarthy is convinced the win could change the complexion of the campaign for his players, who go to a Blackburn side reeling from Saturday’s 7-1 humiliation at Manchester United.
He said: “It is a turning point. We’ve got three points which hasn’t happened very often this season.
“Goodness only knows what it will do for the rest of our season, but it’s a turning point because we’re on 12 points and not nine.
“People will look at us and think they can beat us but maybe they’ll view us differently after this. If we’d been beaten it would have been a dreadful day for us.
“The only way you can find that turning point is a win and we’ve got that but we’ve got some tough games coming up.
“The players have taken so much from it because when you’re playing well and getting beat, it doesn’t wash well with anyone – me, the players or the fans.
“We have to win games and we’ve won one. It was three deserved points.
“And if my future was in any doubt it was news to me.”
McCarthy brought his players back down to earth by claiming Wolves will have to defend better to get anything from Blackburn.
He said: “It’s on to the next game now. We’ll have to play as well as we’ve played in recent games and probably defend better, because it will be another tough game.
“But do you know what? At the minute I’m not really bothered. I’ve enjoyed this because I haven’t had chance to savour a win for a long time.
“My missus saw a smiling kipper on Saturday night instead of that poker face!”
