Mick McCarthy hits out at ‘numpties’
Monday 29th November 2010, 12:05PM GMT.
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has claimed the vital win against Sunderland was reward for the loyal fans as he hit out at the ‘numpties’ undermining him.
The victory came against a backdrop of criticism on radio phone-ins and internet messageboards, where some supporters have been calling for his head.
McCarthy said: “I’m delighted for everybody and in particular for the fans who stuck with us. There was some suggestion I’d had a go at them. That wasn’t right.
“I had a go at the ‘numpties’ who phone in radio stations and do blogs and things like that. Our fans who turn up here have been brilliant this season, outstanding, and I said that as well.
“On Saturday, when we needed that support, at 2-1 down, they were fabulous. They drove us on and if ever there was a never-say-die spirit it was there on Saturday.
“So thanks to them and they can enjoy the victory just as the players.”
McCarthy believes the majority of fans have remained behind the team because they can see the players giving everything.
He said: “What I do like is the fans out here who have been brilliant and have stuck with us.
“They pay their money and they shout and cheer and really get behind us. At 2-1 it would have been so easy to turn on the team but they didn’t.
“And I think they didn’t because the players have shown such good application and spirit.
“All those who come down to the training ground can see that the players are not disheartened or dispirited at all.”
McCarthy paid tribute to his players and their spirit after coming back from 2-1 down with nine minutes left.
He said: “With the run that we’ve had recently, and to go 2-1 down having taken the lead, I’m not sure too many teams in our position would have come back.
“So I’m really proud of them and the players deserve all the credit for that.
“Every time the team go out we know we’ll get every last drop out of them in terms of effort and application.
“We could perhaps do with a bit more quality at times with that final pass or that final ball.
“But to come back like we did shows the spirit of the players and the club and the camaraderie and support that everyone gives each other.
“They give me everything, so I didn’t think we were out of it at all.
“The players on Saturday mirrored my image in that we don’t give up and it’s lovely when it turns out right for you.
“The message is ‘don’t give up, keep scrapping and keep fighting’ and the players deserve all the credit.”
McCarthy also revealed he now agreed with the decision to disallow Richard Stearman’s ‘goal’ for offside on Sunderland.
It initially appeared as if England’s World Cup linesman Darren Cann had made a grave error by flagging but TV replays proved otherwise.
The Wolves boss said: “With all the bodies in there I wondered how it was offside. But I saw it again and it was offside because Stearman was behind the goalkeeper.
“It’s one of those that if things are going for you then you might get it.
“It ended up being a good decision, although I wasn’t saying that to the linesman at the time!”

Was I at the same game? At 2-1 down the place went dead, everyone felt resigned to losing again, and the vast majority of the people around me felt it was the end of the road for Mick.
Great comeback though! MM’s a very lucky boy…

The people who are calling for Mick’s head, are doing so on the grounds that Wolves have had a pitifully poor first third of the season, that he plays people out of position and makes perplexing choices of team selection, that we keep conceding goals at stupid junctures, and that he doesn’t seem able to turn it around. If you ask me, the only “numpty” in all this is the man who uses such a blooming stupid word in the first place.
All well and good Mick, but how do you expect people to enjoy a victory that merely prevents the team from being cut adrift at the bottom of the table? You should think about getting another 28 points mimimum from what remains of this season to be sure of avoiding relegation instead of crowing after beating your old side.
Even if we win next week, we will still be in the bottom three, as we have been for most of the season so far.
numpties we may be but we are also season tickets holders paying hard earned cash to pay yours and the next managers salary after you so perhaps you should keep your thoughts to yourself and get a few more wins before you start having a go at us fans.

Every fan has a right to critise as well as compliment that is part and parcel of the job.
I for one am not 100% certain about MM, Tactically I do not think he is really Prem material, however I cannot deny that the players are working 100% for MM. This is a good thing and is comendable.
I wish thye team well against Blackburn next Saturday!
To hear MM speak anybody would think we were half way up the league and doing well.He needs to explain why none of the players he bought in the summer started on Saturday.Welcome though it was we could have easily lost on Saturday and then what would he be saying? I am not reassured by this result, our defence is a shambles.A worried Season Ticket holder.

Fans are behind the team. They are an honest group. The only frustrations are with the manager who has to take responsibility. We are still 19th. We’ve still lost 9 games this season, including matches where poor tactics or poor defending have thrown away points. We need to win at least two of the next four games.
i like the way he seems to think people who post on messageboards dont go to the matches. I will always be behind the team but will rightly criticise the manager if i think its needed. 1 win does not mean he is out of the woods with blues and west brom coming up he could soon find himself at the wrong end of some very nasty comments i feel.

This guy calls people who criticize him numpties. That about sums up the respect he has for the people who pay his wages and will still be around long after he´s gone. One win (about time) doesn´t keep us up Mick. It´s your job now to show your worth, not have a go at the fans. So get down to it, or the job center, please.

If I was you, I would keep my mouth firmly Shut.
In case it’s escaped your attention, we are a long way from safety and have had a pretty attrocious start to the season, as I’m sure you would agree.
So, calling people spending nearly £1,000 of their hard earned cash numpties isn’t going to win you any friends.
Climbing up to safety might just do it though.

Mick would be wise to keep his mouth shut and concentrate on keeping the team in the Prem.
Getting all cocky after one win will not gain him any new friends in the stands. There is still a lot of hard work to be done.

Managers come and go. The supporters are the foundations of a football club.
I don’t know how many I have seen come and go in the 57 years that I have supported Wolves, and none of them, before this temporary incumbent, has ever called me a “numpty” or any other names.
Only a thick tyke pretending to be Irish would be stupid enough to do such a thing.
Managers are measured by their success on the field, not by their own over-inflated opinions of themselves.
This manager did well in getting us into the Premiership, but he is obviously out of his depth at this level and it is only a matter of time before he goes.
His attempts to transfer blame for his own failings to “numpties” says a lot for his lack of character; a real man accepts his own failings and does not try to blame others.
Well said Mick – I could not agree more!!

Mr McCarthy, at the moment you are the manager of the second worst team in the premier league.
The only thing that keeps you from being the manager of the worst team in the premiership is TWO goals.
Not a lot to shout about is it? Numpty.
Now I have seen the FA Cup draw I fear more embarrasement being forced on us.
Hopefully you will be gone before then. NUMPTY

I fully expected some booing or chanting when we went 2-1 down but there was nothing of the sort. Quite the contrary. I was in the south bank and the supporters around me were encouraging the team on.
There seems to be an inbalance of people that frequently use this website that criticise individual players and the manager, and the majority of supporters who actually support the club and whats it’s doing.
I am afraid it just sums the man up.
Sad really, he misses the point that the great majority have and will always support WW through thick and thin and there has been plenty of those times, however they have by the money they have spent a right to expect some respect from The Manager, and effort from the team.
I still think he is not the man to lead the team this season whilst he keeps making stupid decisions on team selection and tactis, I am not interested what he has done, it’s what he is going to do.
You can either have a manager who speaks his mind and tells it like it is or you can have a manager who hides behind platitudes and mundane nonsense.
If you criticise MM on a forum board, are you doing so without a right to reply?
Take MMs comments in the spirit that they are given, from a man who is fighting and rallying in difficult circumstances.
And MM is just picking out forum mongers, not the fans who go to the games anyway.
If you want hearts and flowers, go on the FA website and post on there, cos the England manager just hides behind the lingo.
Good on ya Mick. Fight the good fight. You are turning this round since you made the decision to start playing more possession football.

100% behind Mick. Well said that man.
And as for O’Neill – God help us.

Is it not possible to get behind the team at the ground and then away from the stadium express disappointment at being joint bottom of the league when expectations were raised with big investment in the Summer? I criticise the manager on job boards but also support the team when I am in the ground. Try and understand this – a wolves fan is capable of doing both. McCarthy is over sensitive because he knows the Summer recruitment has proven to be a complete disaster and he now is rightly under pressure. Please don’t call wolves fans numpties when they question your merits when the team is languishing at the bottom of the league. You are in a high profile job and you are not above criticism – who do you think you are McCarthy?!
Great support from the South Bank at 2-1 down.
Trouble is it was the Sunderland fans ! Rest of stadium was silent until Hunts goal.Constructive criticism is fine. Micks in the firing line and should be able to take it without labelling people as numpties who disagree with him. Lets hope he’s back to hero status in May.
Mick should hesitate to take the moral high ground here; a lot of us who attend regularly and support the team irrespective of results, continue to have our doubts. I agree that the manner of Saturday’s victory firmly indicate that the players remain behind McCarthy, but whilst the victory was well earned, there was undoubtedly an element of ‘last chance saloon’ with Mick’s late substitutions; the outcome and general mood could have been very different today.
Two more wins before the turn of the year are an absolute imperative, anything less than 18-20 points going into January will leave us with a hell of a lot of catching up to do.

Agree with 1-6.
I think mick is makin a rod for his own back. These comments will come back to haunt him in the next few weeks if we dont get a few more wins. I remember a previous local manager calling his fans “fickle” not so long ago and look where he is now?
Lets face facts we have been competitive and organised all season but concede too many goals particularly at the end of games and score too few to win,or get draws.
Yes our football has had to change only because the penny had dropped and Mick has finally learnt that in this league the more you have the ball the more you can control the game.
But the style is still the same lacking flair, imagination and quality.
Mick football in this league has changed and fans paying they hard earned money demand to win and be entertained at the same time.
You along with smegson are a dying breed where huff and puff count more that quality and flair. He got his marching orders last season when the numpties rebelled and look at the way bolton have progressed under an imaginative Coyle.

McCarthy moans about the “numpties” as he calls them but doesn`t have the sense to realise that they are all behind the team but not behind him.All you MM lovers look at what he`s achieved.OK he was at the helm to get us out of vthe championship but last season we only stayed in the Premiereship by the skin of our teeth. This year so far we have gone backwards and are in trouble so don`t tell me he`s doing a wonderful job.His buying is rubbish and his tactical awareness non-existent.If we don`t change manager we are back down.

Brilliant to see so many numpties on here defending their comments about MM…
It’s so easy to criticise a football manager from your seat isn’t it?
All the rubbish about not playing the players signed recently is becoming very boring. The manager picks the players he thinks will win the game on Saturday, simple.
As for playing people out of position, well sometimes you have to, every manager does it, so why get on MM’s case about it?
Still a very long way to go and plenty of points left to win or lose. Surely supporting the club AND the manager can only help the cause, doing tyhe opposite only hinder it?

To be onside there has to be TWO players playing the player on. Normally, one of these is the goalie, but in this case the goalie was infront of Stearman so he WAS offside.
In other words, there was only one player playing the player onside, not the required two, so he was offside

12 Norway Wolf. SPOT ON. My sentiments entirely. McCarthey is a fool if he thinks that win on Saturday justifies himself as a manager. It´s the nine defeats and atrocious defense he plays he should consider but he wont´t.

The majority of people on here seem to have wanted Mick out from the start. OK so some of his desicions have been odd.
But take a look at Middlesbrough, Leicester, Charlton, Norwich. All these clubs are of a similar stature to us, and have fallen a long way from being “established” premier league clubs. We should think very carefully before removing MM as we could end up with a LOT worse.

As you all know i dont attend anymore due to reasons ive given on here before. But like someone said above, in all the years ive watched Wolves, i too have NEVER been called a ‘numpty’ i think its ”outrageous” that the manager of a PL club can be allowed to talk about its supporters either if they attend games or not due to other reasons in that manner? It doesn’t mean cause people dont attend they are NOT loyal supporters, its ok if you can afford to attend matches, but in this economic climate not every person can afford to watch football live hence 25,112 it wasn’t all down to bad weather and poor performances. MM should be big enough to ignore comments about himself, but i think MM brings an awful lot on himself in the way he talks about supporters who ‘pay lots of very hard earn money to watch football’ he’s always coming out with unacceptable comments about fans/people in the E & S, he needs to remember these fans/people carry alot of weight in the long term with higher management. In as much has they help finance the ‘FOOTBALL CLUB’ without its ‘SUPPORTERS’ a FOOTBALL CLUB would be ”’NOTHING”’ UTW:

I think that MM has really got it wrong here. Football is not about just 90 minutes. Every day, every hour and every minute fooball is debated in bars, schools, at work -tell me football fans what is the first thing you talk about on Monday morning when you get to work? Part of the enjoyment of football is the chat, the opinions and the controversy. We all think we are experts and are happy to try to prove it.
The world has now changed and it is radio phone-ins and the internet that provide a more high profile outlet for our thoughts and our so-called expertise. MM should welcome such a debate and be happy that Wolves fans from around the world are using outlets like this for their views.
Does he brand the TV pundits in the same way -who spend most of their time criticising the team!
I would love to be one of those fans at the game and so get the praise from MM but distance prevents it. But that doesn’t stop us watching the games on TV/internet, the revenue from which pays his salary, and buying merchandise that pays for his car.
So please lets keep the debates going. If not then I have will have the start debating the benefits of different cars or the latest episode of Coronation Street.

It would appear that there is only one thought between the lot. This being shared by all!
Please try to remember when criticising the man and the team that he can only work with those players he has and can only buy those the club can afford. Including the wage demands of the players so many of you opt we should buy.

It is not a good idea to tar everyone with the same brush, yes there is a lot of stupid comments that come from radio phone ins and internet forums, but lots are still loyal fans.
If Mick wants to get everyone onside, he should stop being judgemental towards those that pay his wages, some are smarter than he thinks.
If the manager of a super market store called the customers fools for complaining at the poor quality, no one would bother going to that store again. Yet Mick is pushing Wolves fans loyalty to the limit. It is lucky we support the club first and foremost and not him.

OK, on Saturday I did a very stupid thing. When we conceded the second goal, my frustration got the better of me.

HOW STUPID WAS THAT.
I have been behind Mick all along but must admit to starting to have doubts.
A left back at centre back, a striker at left back, a centre back at right back, a right back on the right wing and a centre back in midfield.
BUT, you cannot deny that they gave it all and the passion they showed has made me re-instate my belief.
I believe the team and manager can do what is needed and – I am never leaving again. Mind you a said that last time but it was when John de Wolf got a penalty and Neil Emblem equalised in 1995 !!!

Although I don’t agree with everything Mick does, I just have to put this point across. Here is a bloke who, like any other manager, open to all sorts of criticism. Some of this criticism is well thought out by people with different views, but some of it is pure hatred and personal. Now he calls a few people ‘numpties’ and all hell breaks loose. Discussions are healthy, bile and vitriol are not.

This is one of the first times that I’ve agreed with Mick.
The vast majority of people who post on internet bulletin boards are fickle sheep who merely represent a coincidental indication of the clubs fortunes at any given time.
There’s no doubting that fans are passionate about the club – after all, fanatic is defined as “frenzied, mad”. In pre-internet days, these subjects would be discussed across a shop floor or in a pub. Nowadays, anyone with a computer can post what they wish, claiming vastly superior knowledge than a professional who does this for a living. Bolstered by a top 10 finish in Championship Manager, it’s proof that a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing.
The league table doesn’t lie. MM has stated that he’s learning on the job as well – as even Sir Alex does.
This wasn’t a pop at all internet fans. It was a pop at people who claim with stupid comments like FACT at the end of a sentence when its merely their opinion.
It was a pop at people who state with absolute certainty that Martin O’Neill is the answer to the problem of being second bottom.
It’s a pop at people who wish injury on our own players (whoever the latest outlet of frustration is this week)
It’s a pop at people who call him derogatory terms, from behind the anonymity of their computer screens, and without spending 40+ hours a week with players suggest changes that should be made to team/management/tactics
It’s a pop at people who feel that the chairman (of a limited company) needs to tell fans what he’s thinking because they have a right to know and he only bought it for a tenner and he’s not put money in and he let MM buy poor defenders and he’s not involved enough etc. etc.

What always amazes me! Phone ins (starts off with something like I’ve been a Wolves fan all my life – yarn) ‘e’ mails (MM is rubbish, we should get so and so, look at who they’ve got and they are doing so well). Some home truths, being a Wolves fan does not give you a right to abuse a good man and Manager. I’ve only been a Wolves fan for over 50 years so have little experience of the woes that happen to the club. It was not so long ago that the ground was terrible, we were in the 4th Division and could not beat a non league team in the FA Cup. Now we have a good ground that is going to be given more investment and a team of players that are hard working and some quite reasonable. Like everyone I get fed up with the results and the commitment of our team at times but I have a sneaky feeling that we won’t get relegated and that means keeping our Manager for another year to improve the team more. Getting rid of MM will not be good for the future. Some you should have seen the ground in the 60/70′s awful believe me. Just leave MM alone, get behind a team that is willing to try at least.

First, let’s be clear that McCarthy isn’t taking a pop at all Wolves fans. He says:
“I’m delighted… for the fans who stuck with us”, “the fans.. have been brilliant” and “On Saturday… they were fabulous”.
And I’m sure that extends to those who can’t make it to the game – but who offer their support and encouragement.
The people he calls ‘numpties’ are those who have been consistently moaning for the last 4 years (and in some cases much longer). Personally I don’t think he should descend to their level of personal abuse; but I do think it’s amusing that those who take offence at McCarthy’s insult are the very same people who call him that (and worse) and cite free speech in justification.
If you can’t take it, don’t dish it out.

50) He had little choice on Saturday due to injuries and suspensions. The only player that could have been used instead at the back would have been Van Damme.
