Wolves 3 Sunderland 2

Super-sub Sylvan Ebanks-Blake gave Wolves a vital lifeline to end their run of four defeats.

Ebanks-Blake rifled home his fourth goal of the season in the 88th minute – and he may never score a more vital one.

Fellow sub Stephen Hunt made it 2-2 with nine minutes to go after Sunderland hit back through Darren Bent and Danny Welbeck following Kevin Foley’s 50th minute opener.

Watched by Molineux’s lowest Premier League crowd – 25,112 – there was plenty of action to warm the fans on a freezing day.

Kieran Richardson hit the inside of the post in the first-half, after Richard Stearman appeared to have a perfectly legitimate effort ruled out for offside after 22 minutes.

And Wolves were good value for their much-needed victory after dominating most of the game and seeing chances from Matt Jarvis and Kevin Doyle go to waste.

Wolves again couldn’t keep a clean sheet, but their second win in 15 games kept them off the bottom and narrowed the gap to safety to three points, after Fulham drew 1-1 with Birmingham and West Ham beat Wigan 3-1.

Manager Mick McCarthy made four changes to the side beaten 2-1 at Blackpool last week.

Back came goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey for his first Premier League appearance in a year, while Ronald Zubar, Stephen Ward and Nenad Milijas were recalled.

They came at the expense of Marcus Hahnemann, the suspended Christophe Berra, the injured Karl Henry and Stephen Hunt.

Hahnemann and Hunt dropped to the bench, while Kevin Foley, passed fit to play but with a heavy strapping on his injured knee, was captain for the first time in a Premier League game.

But for all the changes, it was Sunderland who broke first with two good chances in the first 10 minutes.

Darren Bent was put clean through by new England cap Jordan Henderson and, although he got away from George Elokobi, he could only drill a low shot straight at Hennessey.

Boudewijn Zenden was next to try his luck, curling inches wide as Ward failed to get close enough to him inside the box.

But Wolves quickly came into the game and Richard Stearman was fractionally away from connecting with a Matt Jarvis corner missed by goalkeeper Craig Gordon.

Two controversial decisions by the officials then cost Wolves.

First referee Mike Jones failed to spot Lee Cattermole pulling Milijas to the ground when challenging for Ward’s cross, Kevin Doyle lashing over from the rebound.

Then, in the 22nd minute, World Cup linesman Darren Cann disallowed Stearman’s effort after he stabbed home, as Cattermole slid in with Gordon at first playing him on, after Elokobi turned and fired goalwards when Jarvis’ corner was partly cleared.

The decision looked an awful one at first and only after seeing the replay several times did Cann’s flag seem justified – even then, the margins were so tight that the official got lucky.

But Wolves had a scare on the half hour when Kieran Richardson smacked a curling free kick against the inside of the post, from the right hand edge of the area after Elokobi was booked for deliberate handball.

Wolves put the frustrations of the first-half behind them to attack from the restart.

After Zubar saw a rising left-footed whistle just past the post from the edge of the area, McCarthy’s side took a deserved lead in the 50th minute.

Foley grabbed his third in seven games to finish off a flowing move he started himself, with a sweeping pass out to the unmarked Jarvis on the left.

Jarvis’ shot was parried by Gordon at full stretch and Foley drove home confidently first time with his left foot from 15 yards.

Sunderland made a double substitution in the 56th minute when they brought on Steed Malbranque and Asamoah Gyan, for Jordan Henderson and Zenden.

But it was Wolves, who introduced Hunt for David Jones on 63, who looked the more likely scorers with Jarvis firing over after a superb pass from Milijas.

However, Sunderland equalised out of the blue four minutes later.

It was an awful mistake from Stearman, who failed to react when Gyan’s headed flick landed at his feet, allowed Bent to gallop clear and slide the ball across Hennessey and into the opposite corner of the net.

Bent almost gave the Black Cats an unlikely lead moments later when he lashed into the side-netting, after more sloppy play from Stearman.

And the visitors continued to probe, with Malbranque seeing an ambitious curling shot tipped over by Hennessey.

It got worse for Wolves though, when McCarthy’s summer target Welbeck climbed above Elokobi to glance home Phil Bardsley’s cross on 77.

But Wolves hauled themselves back into it when Hunt tapped home from almost on the line, after Elokobi’s powerful header had been parried by Gordon from Jarvis’ cross, which followed Milijas’ blocked piledriver.

Then came Ebanks-Blake’s – almost divine – intervention.

At 2-1 down I feared for McCarthy’s future. It’s fair to question his position because of results but no way should he be sacked if we lost today. When Wellbeck dropped that header in I was going through my head who would stay if we were to go down.

But the lads deserved that, they deserved more than a point they deserved to have a beer bought for them after that result because despite not winning we’re playing some fantastic football. Zubar looked unbeatable, as did Elokobi as Centre Back, infact he commanded the side so well. Milijas was wild. When he sprayed a pass 40 yards to the feet of Jarvis our whole was in awe, he a class act.

But for King Sylvan has done again. He is writing himself into Wolves folklore the way he’s going.

I have posted on this board previously that I am not MM’s greatest fan and I remain to be convinced that he has what is necessary at this level to take the club forward.

I would be delighted if he proved me wrong however.

That said no matter how good the result today, this must only been seen as the start if we are to turn this season around. It is absolutely imperative that we get something points wise from the Blackburn game….and without wishing to be too greedy a clean sheet would be nice too!

At some point you feel the players feel the duress and criticism the gaffer is taking to shield them, and there is a payback to be rendered. Today’s teamsheet had players, as with the bench, who were utterly aware of this and they proved it, with “payback” in spades! Well done Wolves, from top to bottom! Whether another 3,000 supporters drop off from attending or traveling to our next match, inclement weather or not, who cares, because it’s all about the state of affairs in the change-room. Our changing room, from all I hear behind the scenes, is solid and tight, easily better and more equipped to weather some storms, like the current one we are navigating (to safety!), than many others above us, who, we all know, will take their turn at some point soon enough, to replace us and others as League whipping boys! Credit where credit is due to McCarthy today. I was worried when I heard Elokobi was lining up at centre-half but he was superb (that block in the 2nd half alone was immense), along with Zubar, who despite tiring in the 2nd half seems to lift those around him with his enthusiasm. Despite Stearman’s mad 20 minutes in the 2nd half, I thought what was an inexperienced back line played well together. Ward was solid and his distribution is getting better – Jarvis performs much better with Ward behind him.

Good (and brave) decision to reinstate Hennessey – great fingertip save in the 2nd half and it’s nice to have a goalkeeper happy to throw the ball out rather than launch it down the middle all the time for Doyle to fight for scraps.

Foley and Jarvis supporting Doyle was the system that worked so well for us last season, so I hope we stay with this next week. Great finish from Foley on his weaker foot.

I was disappointed with Mancienne again, just doesn’t seem to have the appetite for it in the heart of the midfield. Positionally he can’t be faulted and he gets around the pitch, but too many times today he’d lose 50:50′s or turn his back on the ball.

Hopefully this will give us some confidence going to Ewood next week and then 2 HUGE derbies afterwards.

My message went before i finished, but what i wanted to add was, i hope SM spends a few million on 2-3 ‘TOP QAULITY PLAYERS’ in January, rather than ‘PRESS THE BUTTON’ (Att 25,112 )? As we need those players more than we need a ‘NEW GROUND’ lets look to bring Lescott in like i said before with a Henri Camara type deal with Man City paying the bulk of his wages? we are DESPERATE’ for a ‘TOP CH’ and JL comes into that category. As although today’s win was welcome and a very good win, its still going to be a very hard slog, and we need TOP QAULITY PLAYERS even just 1 or 2 could be the difference in ‘STAYING UP or GOING DOWN’? We’ve been playing far better than our positing in the table sugggests and I hope this is the change in fortunes that we actually deserve.
Not matter what, Mick does deserve our support for the job he has done in his whole career at Wolves. Dave Jones got more support and did no where near as much for us as Mick. Yes, we do scratch our heads at team selections, subs and formations chosen at times, but even, dare I say it, if we go down this season, then I think that Mick should still stay and be allowed to give it another shot. He has at least earned that right since building us from a team that seemed to be doomed to fade away to hold up the lower leagues when he first took over.

What a pulsating match we had to endure. Although we saw it as a film after it finished it still excited us. But at last the boys in Gold and Black made up for some last minute defeats by getting all the points by a last minute winner.
Apart from mistakes that led to both goals conceded on the whole the team played well where Nilijas was again great, Jones played his socks off until being subbed for freaher legs, Jarvis was brilliant as was Doyle with his hold-ons up front and the brilliant pass he gave to Ebanks-Blake for the sweet winner.
Zubar and Ward played their hearts out while Elokobi was a column of strength in the centre of defence.
Foley played a captains part and his goal was an example to all. Hennessey had a good outing after being out for so long. Stearman and Mancienne are faulted for the two goals but Stearman could have had a goal at the othee end as apart from the one disallowed he also hit the post with a header from a corner.
All we want now is for this win to be followed by other three-pointers and this is not an impossible task as the players showed against the big guns against whom a draw apiece was there for the taking.

At last a welcoming win to keep our hopes alive in our battle to keep our place in the Premiership. We know quite well that we are not ready to be like the Wolves of the 50′s and 60′s. We must know also that having spent £18m this season are not going to guarantee us safety because we need time to build a team capable to play like a mid-table team. At the moment we must admit we are still learning our trade as most of our players are still inexperienced.

Another thing I would like to point here is that we need to have at least three academy players to make the breakthrough and I hope the manager will have the gut to introduce them in the near future. I firmly believe that we can do like Aston Villa and other teams who have constantly introduced their youngsters. But here at Wolves we are well behind in this department. Let’s hope we shall have the pleasure to see some of our youngsters getting the chance to show what they can do.

Also I would like to say to all those fans who don’t want to see the extension of our stadium, they are wrong because we do need a great capacity if we are to be on the same level of the teams that are above us. In Steve Morgan we have a man of great vision and wants to go forward with Wolves. Hope that with the return of Craddock and Berra as well as Zubar making his return permanent we should be able to start getting points regularly to ensure our safety.

Great win to come back after going 2-1 down they could easily have dropped their heads when Sunderland scored their second but it says a lot about our team that they never gave up.
Still very worried about our defence giving away soft goals through silly mistakes and not closing down the opposition giving them space and time to get in their shots at goal and pinpoint crosses.
We definitely need two more very experienced central defenders in the transfer window this will give us more stability at the back and enable us to attack teams more as we did today and get those vital wins to keep us in the Premiership.

Great result today, and I like most didnt think we would pull it back after going 2-1 down,…but we did and it was great to see some fighting spirit, but one result shouldnt paper over the dire results and bad tactics we seen recently.
Zubar staying fit could now be the key,…my only concern is that if Zubar takes Foley’s right back place,..MM will inevitably shoehorn him into midfield and we all know it will be at the expense of Milijas as soon as he has an off game, Milijas’s quality and control on the ball is what we have been missing in midfield,..and even though I havnt rated him this season I think Mancienne does the holding midfield role better than Henry as his distribution is better and he does look for a forward pass!.

Yesterday MM did did most things correctly and it worked out, however, come next Saturday he will start his tinkering again. Players in wrong positions, wrong formations, no plan B and substitutions.

MM is a self-fulfilling prophecy, as he always was in his previous roles. Put some money on it, it can’t fail.

Describing Hunt as a ‘Super Sub’ belies the fact that only MM would seek to change a team that was winning, by replacing a terrier in midfield with a winger who proceeded to contribute to Sunderland’s equaliser. We need a manager who can handle quality players with flare rather than sticking to Championship players who will ‘put in the required shift’

I agree that Zubar was the catalyst yesterday, he was magnificent. Essential to keep him fit and playing, similarly Milijas who is one of the best passers of a football I’ve seen in 43 years of supporting Wolves. As for the rest of the “Championship” standard players I keep having to read about, surely McCarthy should be massively congratulated for overseeing the improvements necessary for them to be competing at this level. Foley, Stearman, Ward, Elokobi, Henry, Edwards, Jarvis are still young men learning and as such will be inconsistent. But what a team we will have soon, as they develop even further. McCarthy MUST be allowed to continue the fantastic work he has put in for our club over the last 4 years.

Greatly needed 3 point inspite of NOT because of the tactical genius.

Terrible substitutuion and position swapping at a vital point in the game nearly cost us dear and only once we were behind his hand was forced to throw on one of our 2 top goalscorers.

How long will it take MM to realise that goals win games yet totally refuses to play either or both of the best goalscorers at the club ?
We have scored 4 out of the last 5 goals at home whilst playing with two strikers.
I know MM and some on here think 442 is a bit gung-ho…but we NEED wins and as we are not good enough at the back to keep clean sheets and sneak 1-0 ‘s we NEED to outscore the opposition……we will not do this playing one up front.
We beat Stoke playing 442 and won the game yeaterday after converting to 442, thats 2 of our 3 wins thanks to 442.
Sure, we may concede a few but I am convinced we will win more (win 2 lose 3 is better than win 1, draw 2 lose 2!)… trouble is MM would rather lose narrowly and bemoan his bad luck rather than have a go and risk the odd battering.
This season SEB and Fletch’s goals per minutes played beats or at least matches most srikers in the Prem…..and not to play them is criminal…..or STUPID !!!

Lack of concentration and poor defending by Stearman, his young so hopefully will learn from it. Remember he nearly gave us the lead in the first half.

    fantastic result.
plus points was the team spirit and determination after going 2-1 down, we havnt always shown this fight in other games.
Also we did this without Craddock, henry, berra.
Zubar- what a fantastic return, he really made the difference.MOM for me.
Foley-last season had a nosebleed in front of goal. After scoring at Man utd games, look at his confidence grow and he scored a fantastic goal.
Miljas- his passing quality is beyond any of the players in the whole squad, and he showed it on saturday. He can play in a top 6 team make no mistake.
Doyle- great performance, works so hard to hold the ball up,runs on the wings caused so many problems for mensah he looked happy to go off in the end. Set up the winner
Fantastic finish by SEB.but 65 Matt- SEB cant do what doyle does thats why hes on the bench.

It was the right decision to drop USA, especially after the blackpool game.
I’m really pleased for MM and TConnor. Glad MM recognised the fans played a big part in this win.
    Cons
Still cant keep a clean sheet.
stearman and elokobi did ok but we cant defend for 90 mins without getting caught out 2-3 times and very naive at times. On another day would have lost the game.

Other than that well played boys, may be worth keeping the same team for next week with the exception of Stearman out for Berra and a change up front. Stearman isnt a bad player, he is young, but at the moment he is no where near good enough for this league.

A great result. We need another 3 wins this side of christmas though.

elokobi knockers – George was my outstanding defender as he was at left back a week ago. I cant understand you people that still knock him.

Stearman hopeless. Too many mistakes I’m afraid undo his good work. We cant afford these mistakes.

Personally, I’d like to see Zubes and Big George as centre halfs.

Milijas – Unbelievable passing , why he didn’t start months ago is still beyond me. I have never swallowed this rubbish about him being not ready. He was always ready.

Finally, why people knock Doyle again is beyond me. His workrate and ability to hold up the ball and lay it off is outstanding. He cant score, I’m not denying that but I believe that will come. He just needs that confidence in front of goal.

We are deep in trouble but if we continue playing like that and with belief we will get out of this mess.

Wolves have played bteter than last they did last Saturday and lost, Sunderland had the chances but failed to take them. What Wolves actually accmplished on Saturday, was to score more goals than the opposition. Whether 4-5-1 0r 4-4-2 does not matter, at the end of the day, it is about each player having the ability to be able to interchange positions and use open spaces. no one does that better than Milijas. Doyle may run his heart out but he must start scoring goals as he is in that forward position, Berbatrov plays a similar game but he gets more goals that Doyle Well done Seb, the way you allowed that ball to slide across your body on the half turn and then score the goal was classical play. I am back!!Just for you UNTRUEWOLVES!
15 games and three wins,3 games that you have been able to HAPPYCLAP!.
I will maintain that MICK is not a hero but ZERO.I say this as I dont close my eye’s during games! We have played well at times this season,we also have some good players that given backing and support from the manager can become a driving force in this league. One reason MICK as to go is because he as favourites at the club and does not treat every player in the way that he treats DOYLE,WARD AND STEARMEN,if the likes of ELOKOBI,SEB,FLETCHER,MILIJIAS were given the same treatment we would benefit hughly.
DOYLE is a good player, but our problem which can not be denied is SCORING,yet mick persists in playing DOYLE!.Ask yourselves if SEB had played 13 games and scored one, would MICK have kept him in the side?NO.SEB scores and does not get in the side.SEB may not have the workrate of DOYLE but he can score!Other than MILIJAS no one else would have scored the goal that SEB scored to win the game.
To come on and remain saw cool and collected when given the oppurtunity is a clear indicator that this boy as no fear.SEB had ten minutes and he saved MICK’S job and done more than DOYLE as been able to do in 13games,by putting us back in the picture for survival.WARD looked suspect as usual yet remains in the team,ELOKOBI is starting to find form in the odd games he plays in!Given a run he can nurture into a very capable player.
MICK as to start showing bottle and guts and get his team to go and win games,we played so well and then went one up and what happens we retreat in numbers!!When we were behind and needing to score at times we had 7players in the box! There as to be a happy medium not all about defence, yet it is in defence that we make costly MISTAKES,If some of the wolves players were gi the liecence to be attack minded we would score goals and win more than we lose.
I will always love the wolves no matter, but it does hurt when you know that we should be doing better than we are,and this is mainly down to the manager. If MICK can change his ways and look at it just through MANAGERS eyes he can rectify the areas of concerns, like ward, not scoring goals etc.MICK needs to be become more fairer and give equal amount of support to all his players,if not then get rid of the one’s he does not trust in and get players he will trust in.
Otherwise whether or not I say it he will be “HISTORY”.One win does not change views just like one loss, but MICK as managed 91 games in the league and won a MERE 14!The way the season is going with most of the teams picking up results likes of blackpool, newcastle, west brom we will most likely need 40-41points,meaning another 9 wins or so out of 23 games. That means a serious improvement in MICKS in ratio, can he do it ?YES but he as to take away the favourites unless they are producing the goods, play players in there positions, and play strikers who score, and get the defenders to be more on the money, every team concedes goals, but some of the things we do are bordering on laughable things that can be sorted. My honest beleif is we can SURVIVE without much bother,to do this we need to concentrate right through the team, and cut out or limit the mistakes greatly, this is the managers job,to prepare his team warrior like fashion and give them the beleif that we are better than the position we find ourselves in.
Mick should take a leaf out of HUNT’S actions he scored to level the game, and immediately got the ball and started to run waving everyone, saying come on lets not dilly dally we have a few minutes to win the game so lets go and do it the celebrate.Mick would have been happy to settle for a draw!

When I saw Untruewolves post, I just knew there´d be a quick response. Good one Wanderer in Eire. Good points. I mean seriously, come in 86, if you think what we have seen thus far this season is praiseworthy work from our manager, is it good enough? How can it be? The man has to changes his approach If he does change, why does he wait so long to do it?
I think Doyle has class but ploughs a lonely old furrow far more often than not. Seb is getting a fraction of the playing time as well as scoring goals. Shock horror, is he not our top scorer? I, like the 25000 others at the <Mol on Saturday saw wor Toyler blow his best chance when he ballooned his shot over the bar from about twelve yards out. The way Seb took his goal was pure class. A great goal to grace any stadium in the country. Will he start against Blackburn or will Mick rest him & go for a draw?
Draws are too risky, we don´t have a defense to withstand concerted attack from the opposition. Notch up a two goal lead and hold your nerve, that´s a far better way to win games than to take off your striker at 1-0 and try to hold on. Tactic like that win you points and respect. Mick might not think so but as W-I-E pointed out, his premiership stats speak for themselves. He needs to learn from his mistakes and he´s got to do it fast.

My biggest worry is Stearman who is the most error prone defender I have ever seen! Hopefully, he will be replaced by Berra in the next game.

Apart from that I think that we should keep the team relatively the same. Okay, Foley isn’t a natural winger but he did the job and if it gives our leaky defence a bit more protection playing the likes of Mancienne and Foley, I guess its worth it. After all, it worked last year!!

So sorry that my post does not meet with your approval. I shall therefore accept the personal abuse that you aim at me and ….off as you suggest, afterall, as a season ticket holder for over 30 consecutive years who am I to offer an opinion ?

p.s. Yes, MM’s subs did have an effect….within 14 minutes of his first ‘tactical’ substitutuion, we went from 1-0 up to 2-1 down !!!! GENIUS !
