Jez Moxey reassures Wolves fans
Friday 26th November 2010, 12:59PM GMT.
Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey has assured fans ‘we will get it right’ ahead of the clash against Sunderland.
Manager Mick McCarthy admitted the game is a ‘must-win’ after nine defeats in the last 11 games.
Ultimately, chairman Steve Morgan will fire the bullets, but Moxey is anxious for the game not to be seen as a potential ‘tipping point’ for the manager’s future.
He said: “I believe it will turn as long as people stay together. The chairman is a quick learner, and he realises what we have got in Mick.
“It’s a really important game but no one is panicking and there’s lots of football to play.”
And the chief executive stressed a number of mitigating circumstances.
He said: “We have to remember that we’re still a relatively inexperienced team in the Premier League and we’re in the depths of an injury crisis.
“We’re missing three of our starting back four from last season in Jody Craddock, Christophe Berra and Ronald Zubar, when Ronald was one of our better players.
“Jody has been out for six games and we’ve missed him a lot more than people think.
“We’re without three midfielders in Karl Henry, Adlene Guedioura and Dave Edwards and when you think of how we play – 4-5-1 – Dave is ideal.”
“Adlene was just breaking through and was about to make a real impact when he broke his leg.
“I’ve heard Chelsea say that they’re not the same team without John Terry and Frank Lampard – well, we’re without five or six players.
“So we remain confident that when we get our players back fit we will be stronger.”

How can “we get it right” when we still don’t know our best team, and we are still stuck with the same back 4 that nearly cost us relegation last season, after what I think is about 14 defenders and midfield signings.
You are on the same planet as the blogger.
Fans are paying good money and being short changed.

I do agree that injuries will weaken a team, thats kind of obvious Jez.
Im not sure hiding behind an injury crisis is the answer though as teams like Blackpool should still not be turning us over with what we have out on the field.
I would be thinking of changing manager by now, and certainly if we lose tomorrow. But then we are in the situation already by whoever comes in may also take us down as we are always chasing. If we do go down who better than Mick to take us up??
Its a hard one but if he goes he goes with my thanks for what he has done for this club. If he stays then we may end up in the league below. Over to you Steve Morgan. I don’t envy your decisions ahead.

I think Jez has done a great job at Wolves in the commercial department – particularly the sale of the club to Steve Morgan.
And welcome his views on such things as ticketing, ground developments, corporate marketing etc etc
But why does he insist on making comment on playing matters? he only attracts more criticism and stirs up more trouble (and pressure) for Mick?
Wolves supporters have got enough to worry about without thinking that Jez Moxey has any influence on the football side.
When Steve Morgan speaks we will listen, when Jez speaks we throw our hands up in despair!
Steve Morgan owns the club, Jez is an employee, I hope he got approval from Mick and Steve Morgan before taking it upon himself to talk about football matters?
I doubt it.
Thanks Jez more pressure on Mick and the boys!

Its simple if we win he stays, if we draw or lose bye bye Mick. To be honest sunderland have a good attack so thanks for what you have done Mick and all the best.

More than enough time and money to get it right.Let’s face up to it no one at Molineux has the expertize to arrest the problem and go forward.A team that doesn’t score at one end and lets loads in at the other end can not possibly be capable of competing. The problems this year are the same as last years. The man in the dugout has had enough time to right his wrongs but has failed.
Injury crisis! this is utter nonsense. Henry and Berra have played most the games this season, Henry was suspended, not injured and Berra the same. Adlene wasn’t getting a game and the fact that he is saying we are struggling because of no Dave Edwards and Jody Craddock is utterly, utterly desperate.
Im sick of people at the club always saying get behind the team every week! We actually do!
Lets just get 100% behind the boys like never before. From 1st second to the last no matter what the score. That way they can stop telling the fans to stick together etc.
We can give it our all from the stands, and hope the players do the same

Its clearly a matter of money as to why Mick hasnt been chopped yet…Moxey & Morgan just want teh cheapest option… well when were in the chump ship next season i hope it sinks it tha ta change was need in september- and of November and hes still in charge! Money talks

Calm down there guys. I have had very little problem with Mick’s, well, anything this season. We simply have failed to concentrate at the start and end of games. If we can manage this against Sunderland we will win and so gain confidence then go on a run.
Jez knows what he’s doing and so does Mick so just get behind them. BOOING DOES NOT HELP!

I thought the job was done Jez? We weren’t going to make the same mistakes as West Brom? We were going to sign experienced Premier League players?
Well I for one am still waiting for any of these to be achieved. The latest signings have made no improvement to the team at all and in fact made it worse by trying to shoehorn Fletcher and Hunt into the team when both are Championship players at best.
Time for Morgan to clean house of Mick, Clipboard and Job Done Jez.

Stick to Hockey and counting pennies Moxey because YOUR knowledge of football could be written on the back of a postage stamp.
In fact go one better and go back to Stoke please.
At the end of this season YOU will have overseen two failed atempts to remain in the premiership and you will have sacked two managers for it. (jones and McCarthy)
Yet you as the CEO remain in place, Why?

Ive always said Jez should have been a MP, as he’s full of ‘spin’. To say we’ve got players out injured is a joke, yes Kites is a long term injury, but the names mentioned above have played in most of the games or been available to play? So all the games lost recently is down to all except for MK,and what reaally P’s me off is Jez/Mick saying the supporters need to get behind the team, what do they think 26,000+ do every home match and even better support when Away by about 2,000-5,000 fans. I wont lie im not a big MM fan, yes he did a fantastic job rebuilding this club/team after the ‘Shambles’ that useless excuse of a ‘Football Manager’ Hoddle left us in, but ”IMO” i think after giving him the chance he deserved/earned to manage us in the PL, and keeping us up, for me that was has far has he would ever take us. Lets be fair he’s no different than many players or other managers who’ve done the same thing,in getting to the PL. They’ve got us out of the Championship but when they’ve got into the PL they simply are NOT good enough to play consistently well week in-week out, which is NO fault of theirs its just the way it happens every ‘PLAYER/MANAGER’ as a LEVEL and i think MM and most of our squad are playing/managing OUT of their LEVEL. Yes you will always get maybe 4-6 players who can make the ‘HUGE’ step up , but at the same time you will always get 7-10 who cant make that step-up. Thats why most fans who write on here said we needed at least 6-8 ‘QUALITY’players the season we got promoted? Then this season we ALL said again we need at least 4 ‘TOP QAULITY’ players to take us to the next level i.e about 10th-12th in the League, but im afraid the first year we didnt buy enough Qaulity players, but with a bit of Luck and three other teams who was worse than us we just about stayed up. But this season the manager spent another £18M on players who for one reason or another haven’t made any or little impact on our team, whether its down to the players own ABILITY or the MANAGER’S fault for NOT picking them or PLAYING them in their right ‘POSITIONS’?. We needed players who’ve played in the PL with at least a minium of 3-5 seasons in the PL, but has Jez said live on radio they cost money in ‘fees/wages’ and WE wont break our wage structure for any player? Therefore Mick bought in players with only 1-2yrs PL experience which is now costing us dearly. UTW: GOOD LUCK TOMORROW LADS:

I have never heard a bigger load of drivel which Moxey is putting about. He said we wouldn`t make the mistakes the Baggies made,so when are we going to stop Moxey? McCarthy had money to spend but spent it on Championship players not Premiereship players. If Mr Morgan is a quqick learner and “realises what we have got in McCarthy”why is McCarthy still at the club? The best thing that could happen is McCarthy out and you Moxey could go with him.Lets get O`Niell in before it`s too late.

Excuses being made already? We have hardly lost any of our attacking threat by not having henry and berra avalibale…
Btw how is henry running on a medial ligament injury already? :0 saw the pictures on here, iam sure he is out for 2 months? Surely REST is a key issue in recuperation? alas our medical team

I am sorry Jez but stop telling us rubbish. We have an injury Crisis???? Van Damme, Myokolo in defence Mick brought these players and has had a lot of money to spend. When will anyone in football Managers and Boards admit mistakes!!! McCarthy has been poor this season I don’t think he is a bad person but he is not a Premiership manager to take a club forward. There are no obvious candidates out there but if we stick with Mick when we go down it will be groundhog season when we go back up. If we don’t win on Saturday he has to go and take the coaching staff with you maybe we wouldn’t have an injury crisis if we had a top physio!!!!!

Steve Morgan showed his concern by sitting with the fans at Blackpool.
He is taking the views of everyone ‘top to bottom’ of the club.
At the moment he is backing Mick and so should the supporters.
The constant sniping suggests more than a few Baggies fans are writing posts….

Some of the responses, in fact most of the responses on here are beyond belief. I spent most of yesterday laughing at Scousers for a massive over reaction to some comments Hodgson made about a young Spanish player they’ve got, thinking to myself, “there they go again”, & now I open this story and see this !
Jez hasn’t said anything out of turn. He’s offered his opinion, presumably when asked for it, and to be honest, comes across well. To those who say he knows nothing about football, well, to be fair, we as fans know nothing when compared to managers or coaches in the game. Jez isn’t a manager or a coach, he speaks as a fan, with the knowledge of a fan, nothing wrong with that.
I can’t believe anybody actually could suggest he should leave the club based on 1 relegation and the potential of another when he’s also resided over 2 promotions, once as Champions, & a season where we managed to stay up, comfortably. He is now a key figure in everything this club does in terms of grown improvements etc.
If McCarthy leaves, it’ll be sad but if things carry on, he’ll have to at some point. If Jez leaves it would be a disaster for this club unless Morgan has an exceptional business man to replace him in the CEO position.

God what a crew we´ve got running the show here. Thanks Jez, your reassurance makes me feel totally relieved. Your pearls of wisdom have brightened up my day. Really I had no idea at all that these were the reasons why we´re second to bottom of the Prem with only two wins from 14 starts.

Don’t worry everyone, Jez has given us his re assurance that we will be OK. Well thank god for that, I was beginning to worry that with only 9 points after 14 games we were in trouble but now Jez has spoken I feel fully re assured and confident that we will easily stay up.
Why do we hear everyday in the E&S someone from the club saying everything is OK, they should keep out of the press and get on with sorting it out rather than talking a good game.

“The chairman is a quick learner, and he realises what we have got in Mick”.
would suggest that Morgan didn’t fancy MM at first and needed to be bought round to the idea.
At least Morgan has the sense to take on board fans views and pray God, ignore them judging by the nonsense on these forums.
There’s no one out there at this moment better than Mick to keep us up.

Jez said: “I believe it will turn as long as people stay together. The chairman is a quick learner, and he realises what we have got in Mick. What exactly is that then Jez?
A Manager who has precided over 49 defeats in 80 premiership matches,
A manager who has spent £38 million in 2 years but does still not know his best starting 11,
A manager who plays his players anywhere other than where they should be,
A manager who recommends Ward as a future NI Left back,Foley a a future Irish midfielder,
A manager who sets his stall not to lose rather than win matches,
A manager who has no plan B when things go wrong. This last phrase obviously applies to you too Jez.
Jez if MM is good enough to maintain/Strengthen our premiership status then Great,However if he keeps performing as his last 11 matches have done urgent surgery will be required at the club.
Sensible words in my opinion. But when is Steve Morgan going to address the real problem at Wolves;the lack of football know ledge in the Boardroom.Jez I am sure is great at controlling costs, but we need someone else at Board level to make the strategic footballing decisions on player recruitment.Basically if you get football recruitment correct you are 80% on the way to having a successful football team. These days I do not believe you should leave it entirely to the manager. We are the only medium sized football club that has had the benefit of a benefactor for 20 years and yet failed to make a breakthrough. The main reason for this has been a failure to tackle to step change needed in player recruitment.

Sir Billy, the only one constantly sniping is you, and you seem to do it ever day, to every fan who doesn’t agree with you.
If you haven’t anything constructive to say then why bother just attacking the fans constantly? After all, we havent got us in this mess have we.

Open message to Messrs Moxey and Morgan: at the moment, were I you, I would simply keep your mouths shut when it comes to “reassuring the fans” and start preparing the first round of interviews for a successor to the manager. Your rhetoric isn’t really helping matters.

Sir Billy Quiet it shows what you know is very little, Morgan had planned his trip to blackpool weeks ago as he was attending the game with Bully and the promise dream directors as a bit of a day out, he even went on the Mini bus that bully attends most away days on. It was in no way an exerise to see what the fans views are even though he found that out. It was a boys day out!
Mad Mick has done a good job but unfortunatly has proved that he can not take us to the next level which we need for the development of our club, with McCarthy in charge we are going down.

The reason we stayed up last season was that doyle, henry, craddock, jarvis, hannerman played nearly every game and played really well, Zubar too.
Sorry Jez but results show we dont have a good enough squad to cover injuries or poor form. You and Mick have not brought a single player in the summer who can hold down a regular place in the side and who has made any impact.
Dont worry Chelsea will win games without lampard, alex, terry and co . I dont know how they lost to Brum with the chances they had.
I hear that Sunderland will be without their main central defenders tommorow, so they are in the same boat as we are.
With this in mind I think MM should start with 2 upfront. Fletcher and doyle for me, mancienne comes in for henry and miljas must play. Zubar on the bench. Moayoko must start and prove himself.

sounds like all the same moaners on here who moaned at a similar stage last season, wake up this is the prem league and were not going walk it regardless of whos in charge, get behind the team. but i bet most of you will boo even if we draw instead of a win ( if you go at all !!
32, you are an inspiration and a hero to us all.
9 points after 14 games, or indeed 10 after 15, doesn’t inspire moaning, it inspires a simple realistic assessment that things aren’t working the way they are and that we’re sliding backwards. Still, at least we’d get eight extra games next season…

26 Supporters that wish to do nothing but put out negative bile need to be challenged on their moronic views. Something ‘constructive’ is supporting your team not slagging it off….
28 Thanks for adding detail to my comment that Steve Morgan sat amongst the fans on Saturday – by sitting amongst the fans he knew only too well that he would get direct feedback.
As I’ve said before give Mick until after the Baggies game, after which if we have not improved our points total (in line with safety) then he will walk.
Glad that I am starting to ‘get under the skin’ of those that pretend to support this club but spend far too much time slagging it off…
Report abuse
Stupid excuse when you think we’ve spent about £50M in the last 3 windows. That sort of money should assemble 25 players who can cope with 7 being out (Craddock, Zubar, Guedioura, Kightly, Edwards, Henry & Berra). That leaves 18 players. We only need 11!
What do some of you expect Jez to say – “We’re all doomed”? Well done to him for not over-reacting. At least we are not headlining the next match as a “Save our Season” game, as are West Ham. No pressure there. Recently some on here were complaining that Jez hadn’t been heard from in the Press. Now he has, the same ones are probably complaining that he has! The Sunderland game matters immensely but if we do lose it- and I hope we don’t – do we give up? Of course not.
Kentish Wolf, you say in your letter that Jez speaks as a fan.A fan is someone who supports one team through thick and thin,Moxey supported Stoke when he worked there,he now supports Wolves and wherever his next job is he will support them, therefore he is only a fan of that club whilst they are paying his wages.
Well, we better “get it right”.
Wigan are away at bottom club West Ham. If Wigan win…
And if Fulham win at home to Birmingham…
…we could potentially be seven points adrift of the pack.
The need to get it right is phenomenal. Because if we are seven points adrift (or more) come Christmas, there’s nobody – just nobody – who’ll come in and “put a shift in” at a club with the odds so stacked against their Premier League survival.

33, agree its not working at the mo , but booing and calling for the gaffers head isnt going to sort anything. no i dont like the position were in but i can only give my support same as the rest of us, at a time like this we need to unite not lash out at the owner and manager.
O’neil wont come even if we ask him, plus do we really want a gaffer who throws his dummy out if he doesnt get his way.
and the Doncastor manger, no way, not managed above fizzy pop league massive step backwards.

I don’t want to keep harping on about last seasons game at Old trafford, but after it Jez Moxey came to McCarthys defence saying that the players selected were good enough to play in the premiership, now after spending another 18 million on 5 new players he has come to his defence again saying injuries are hampering Micks plans.I don,t know about everyone else but don’t you think Jez is saying that our playing squad is going backwards.
Northbanker – I did mean really he speaks as a general football fan with the footballing knowledge of a fan, rather than specifically him being a Wolves fan, having said that, I don’t for one second doubt his commitment to our club.
Whilst I’m here, Colin Peppiatt, of the players you listed, it could be argued 5 of those would be regular first teamers if fit & the other 2 regulars on the bench. I doubt many teams would fair all that well losing 3 of the first choice back 4 regardless of how much is spent.
McCarthy hasn’t spent drastically more than other clubs either. We’re one of the few clubs living within it’s means. Bolton maybe doing Ok at the moment, but they run at massive losses, West Ham run at massive losses, as do Wigan, as do Fulham, as do Birmingham & Sunderland must be too with some of the wages they hand out. If McCarthy was afforded the luxury of going £35million over budget in a single season, as Coyle has at Bolton, I’m sure we’d be a lot higher up the table.
Need to start looking at the bigger picture people.
& please don’t anybody try and suggest, that we’re running at around breakeven. shows a lack of ambition from Morgan !

Whatever happens ‘Players and Managers’ will come and go? But supporters will always be here. When you first come into football i.e with your dad/mother,brother/s sister/s, it either doesn’t appeal to you, or it grabs you for life? Which the latter happened in my case. But there’s one thing i can be ‘very proud ‘ of is ive NEVER booed any Wolves player off the pitch, yes ive come away from the ground/s mumbling and moaning saying im not coming again lol. But i was always there come the next match giving 100% support, be it home or away. But one thing i really hate is being taken for a mug, or being told to support the team? MY TEAM, by some prat who’s main concern is £££££££££££’s,or back this manager or that manager or player/s, ive ALWAYS given nothing but 100% support like 1,000′s of other very LOYAL SUPPORTERS. If we lose tomorrow, I will stand up and BOO the loudest I possibly can. I hope another 20,000 or so join me to. Clearly, it’s the only way to get the muppets running this club to understand that the vast majority of us are completely fed up with the direction this club is heading.
After all, if we lose, I suspect we will be bottom as I expect West Ham to get a result.
However, if we win, I will cheer!!

Out of interest Richwolf64, who would you have in to replace McCarthy if he went after tomorrow & 20,000 boos ?
I don’t mean that at all sarcastically, it’s a genuine question. For me, the hardest part of all this, and a massive reason why I’m not convinced getting shot of Mick would help, is I can’t for the life of me think who could come in & do better at this moment ! I’m not saying that nobody could, just that nobody really inspires me to believe they could.
I can’t think of anybody other than O’Neil that would make me confident he could turn it round, and I don’t think he would even entertain the thought of joining us, and if we were going to go for an up & coming football league manager, I can’t help but think, as painful as it might be, just sitting tight, taking a relegation on the chin & giving the new manager a strong squad in the championship to settle in with might be a better long term option. Bringing in an inexperienced manager straight into a relegation dog fight could destroy their confidence and tarnish their name with relegation before he’s even had a chance to do a good job.
To be honest, I’m kind of pleased it’s not me that has to make this choice…………. hopefully Morgan won’t have to either

Berra suspended, Mouyokolo struggling with a back injury, Craddock recovering and Stearmans indifferent form. What a great opportunity this could have been for Danny Batth. Interesting articles today. “Dave Jones is ready to go for the kill”. Personally I wish he’d just go full stop. He didn’t want to sign a contract, he’s clearly looking for a move in January and he couldn’t hit a cow’s backside with a banjo judging on his woeful performance against Blackpool. And that was on top of a number of previous poor performers. However stretched our midfield gets lets not pick this wantaway. In fact let’s not pick any wantaway-I thought Van Damme was a hard man, but now I know why they call him “Jelly”. I still think we can do this, but only if we pick the players who want to play for the Wolves-Doyler and Milijas and the rest of the true Wulfs. Come on me babbies!

Come on Jez in those at least 6 of those defeats in the last 11 Karl Henry played so thats a nonsense. Also Edwards, Craddock & few others also had some involvement in the games either side of the Man City win & our only other win so far this season in the opener against Stoke City – Short memeories fellas. Get a grip, keep all the players & those who talk drivel out of the papers. Do things that most clubs do & that is practice shhoting outside of the box – who knows we score a couple of wonder goals like the ones we keep conceding – stop serving up what we get every week, change things around & that does not mean dropping Nenad because he won’t run around like a headless chicken every game.

As a Baggie I’m sure you and others will tell mme to mind my own business. But speaking for myself I hate the sound of our own fans booing at the end of a game unless it’s because the players haven’t tried, it’s one of the worse sounds in the world.
It also inevitably comes over that you are booing the players. Last week some of our fans booed the ref off but it was reported that they were booing the performance which wasn’t the case.
I wouldn’t presume to try to tell you and others whether your views on your own club are right or wrong but think long and hard about the effect that booing will have on the players morale.

I have just read an article where Mr McCarthy is calling people like me and all the others on this site MUPPETS. He also defines the people who call radio stations as MUPPETS. Mr McCarthy are you too simple minded to understand that us MUPPETS contribute to your salary?
You are also blaming the present predicament on injuries. Sorry, but if you continue to sign players that are INJURED, Hunt, Mouycolo et al are they not adding to the injury list???
Lose today MUPPET and you deserve nothing less than the SACK together with your ally Moxey.

Well, I’m just being honest about booing.
If Micks team selections weren’t so bizarre and if he didn’t insist on playing his favourites until invariably, we are in a mess, then I would have more sympathy.
I’m not one of these people who has a romantic vision of Mad Mick saving this club from the championship.. not least the fact I think he’s taking us back there… So, to be fair, if that did happen, then we haven’t made any progress whatsoever under him.
The problem I have is, I don’t think Mick is good enough at this level to keep us up. I like the chap, and yes, it was one of the best days of my life being promoted but I just don’t believe there is room for sentimentally in football.
Who would I like, mm Im not sure. I’ve only started seriously thinking about it this week to be honest… I would like to see Ince in some sort of coaching role, but manager.. Paul Lambert maybe… I’ll give it some serious thought and let you know :)

Greasy,
I don’t think wolves will lose today as Sunderland are without their first choice central-defenders. JtH.
