Mick McCarthy’s confidence is rock solid
Wednesday 24th November 2010, 11:30AM GMT.
Defiant Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today insisted his belief in himself and his players hasn’t been shaken by the damaging run of results.
Nine defeats in 11 games has left Wolves and McCarthy in desperate need of three points against Sunderland at Molineux this Saturday.
But 51-year-old McCarthy, who has been managing for 18 years, said he has no problems lifting himself and those around him.
“I’ve been managing for a long time,” said the boss. “Motivation? I do it myself actually — I don’t just sit and brood and fester about it. I’m alright. I get myself at it as I’ve done again this week.”
Asked whether his belief was shaken, he replied: “Not at all.
“We sat and watched the Blackpool game on Monday morning and Steve Weaver came in scratching his head as to how we didn’t win it.
“He said he’d seen we’d lost 2-1 and he was listening to Tony Cottee on Saturday who said: ‘Wolves should have won’.
“We had plenty of chances and we should. But what happened in both boxes killed us. So my belief hasn’t changed at all, no.”
McCarthy insisted he has received plenty of support, from inside the club, the wider football community and his family.
“I have loads of support,” he said. “When things don’t go particularly well, it’s easy to sit at home and think everything’s against you.
“Actually my life is brilliant, except for the fact I can’t get three points from somewhere at the minute.
“I’m the one who looks at all the positives in life, gets up, goes out and cracks on with it and tries to turn the football around because it’s me that has to. Everything else is fine, it’s great.”
McCarthy insisted only Steve Morgan could explain the significance of the chairman’s decision to sit with the fans at Bloomfield Road.
“I don’t know, you’d have to speak to Steve on that one,” he said. “It’s not for me to comment on it. If I sat upstairs you’d be saying ‘he doesn’t sit up there very often’ and you’d ask me. You wouldn’t be asking anybody else.”
And McCarthy denied his injury pile-up was worse than anywhere else, despite the loss of Karl Henry for two months.
“We’ve lost a few, particularly the midfield having lost Dave Edwards, Karl and Adlene Guedioura- that’s three really good competitive, mobile midfielders, but I don’t think it’s anything worse than elsewhere,” he said.

It’s up to every Wolves supporter to get behind the team on Saturday, let the lads know we want them to suceed in Gold and Black.
Sadly there are those amongst us that will turn up at the Molineux waiting for something to go wrong so as they can start moaning, slagging off the team and calling for Mick’s head.
My suggestion is that the ’3M’s haters’ go Christmas shopping on Saturday.
The team need support or we will all be going down together…….

MM is so confident that he has taken on trail a forward from Nice who scored 1 goal in 23 starts last season and has played all of 28 minutes of football so far this season- Quality!
The sooner he goes the better for all concerned.

The next 2 games are Crunch time for MM and his stay at Wolves !
We need a new direction !

Mick McCarthy says ”he has no problems lifting himself and those around him.”
I am sorry but he doesn’t instill any confidence in me at all.
His whole demeanour is one of negativity and it has rubbed off on the team.
He needs to go NOW before it is too late for the next manager to work a miracle.
My preference would be Martin O’Neil for the post but failing that go for some one like Shaun O’Driscoll who has little Doncaster playing good football and performing well in the championship. He is a local lad who knows what is required here at Molineux.
Something that is lacking with the present Management and for that case the board as well.

Well, what a difference 24 hours make eh..
Let’s hope we are all positive come 5pm Saturday.

I think mick is the only person that is confident!!! this clown should have gone ages ago you can see why sunderland got rid of him!
apart from doyle and jarvis the rest of the team is championship quality we have spent 40 odd million on a load of crap that just shows micks ambition like in the summer when he said im targeting the players from the relegated teams ??? the reason there relegated cause there players wasnt good enough to keep them up so why the hell would we want them!!!
In the championship you was a quality manager but at this level your very very poor if we lose saturday i think morgan and jez need to have a hard think about your position so we can get someone fresh in for january!
Its whats needed though some motivation and a fresh mind around the dressing some and a different style of football cause our football is boring at the moment we have no creativity or nothing!!
I think your time is coming to an end mick im dreading saturday with all the defenders we have out injured and now henry out for 2 months espeically when were gonna be having bent and gyan running at us going to be tough!

I see Mick you have on trial another fantastic prospect in this Bagayoko “STRIKER”from French side Nice.
Played ONLY 28 minutes this season because of INJURY and SUSPENSION in the French 1st Division. Is 31 years of age and scored ONE GOAL in 23 MATCHES last season. WHOOOOOOOOOAAAAAHHH really can’t wait to see him set the Premiership alight with that sort of “RECORD”

This article is almost bound to attract just about all the McCarthy whingers.
To some degree Wolves were a little bit unlucky on Saturday. The first goal may well be a contender for goal of the season. The second goal may on another day with another referee have been disallowed for a foul on the goalkeeper.
Nevertheless, we had far more possession and chances to win the match. Jarvis supplied more crosses (12) than any other player in the Premiership in last weekends games.
If Wolves were actually playing badly, and as a consequence losing points, then I might join the chorus to sack the manager.
However, unlike others who post comments on this site, I can’t see another suitable available manager who would come in and do any better than McCarthy.

Good man Mick, that’s really positive, none of this wringing of hands and saying ” I don’t know what we can do” You have to get on with it, and I believe you can. I might be the only one though when you see some of the blogs on here! Up the Wolves!!

I’m sick to death of all this cheap talk and throw away lines. For goodness sake we are in the mire, and all we hear is this rubbish. How about we see some results?

Still confident we can slowly climb to safety. Blackpool will go down, West Ham look in real trouble and I suspect the Baggies will struggle, so I see it as a fight between the Baggies, Fulham, Wigan and Wolves. Having seen a lot of games we are certainly no worse than any of these and I believe slightly better. Two wins and everything will look so different. Keep the faith.

11, You’re not in the minority of proper Wolves supporters, who will get behind the team AND the manager on Saturday. You might be in the minority on these pages which seem to attract idiots like 4 6 7 and 10 who only seem to rear their bitter spiteful heads when things are going badly, but who takes any notice of their clap-trap anyway? Jog on boys, and go and look up the word ‘support’

On the one hand, great to hear you remaining positive in the face of a crisis. On the other, get nothing out of the next two games and we’re descending on your castle with burning torches. How does that sound?

Can I suggest an emergency measure to face our current predicament?
This to apply to management and players, from now till the end of the season.
1. No wages for every game lost
2. Treble wages for every game won.
Worth it if we thus accumulate enough points to survive?
It may generate that tiny little bit of extra concentration and effort as well as motivation to win games. So the club pays them three times their normal wages if they win every remaining game of this season, it will be worth it and cost less than if (heaven forbid) we are relegated.

we need 3 pts anyway we can at the weekend, we are lucky we aren’t adrift at bottom yet.
if we scrape a 1-0 with a deflection that will suit me.
i worry we keep playing well, keep getting plaudits for our football. i remember the baggies under mowbray a few years back being the same.
thing is we are not scoring often enough and how many goal have we let in at start and end of games.
another thing is look at blackpool a championship squad in most peoples eyes..whats the difference between them and us.
come on the wolves!!!
everythings crossed for the win

I read lots of comments on here about certain players we have being of championship quality.
Look at Blackpool, every single player they have are Championship (or ever lower) quality. yet every week so far Ian Holloway has managed to get all the players to perform and get results. You only have to listen to Holloways after match interviews to see the passion he has.
On to Mccarthy!! his after match interviews are boring he has no passion- you can imagine him in the dressing room, no wonder the players are under performing!
Get rid Morgan now, bring someone in who can motivate these players in the same way Holloway motivates Blackpool.

Can you imagine any other manager in the relegation zones now, in the past or in the future ever saying such a flippant condescending remark when every weekend he ruins the weekends and subsequent weeks of thousands..?
How about putting an end to trying to live up to your ‘humourous’, ‘witty’, ‘straight talking’ interview style and volunteering some answers to serious football questions? (that have been written here many times so won’t repeat)

As much as I hate to see a Wolves player injured, our only 4 points in the last 11 games have come whilst Karl Henry was suspended for 3 games, after that bone idle challenge at Wigan. West Ham and Man City at Home (from which we got a draw and win), the other game was Chelsea away, where we gave a good account of ourselves. Just highlighting the facts.
We need to get 100% behind the boys on Saturday and get a much needed 3 points. We need AT LEAST 4 points from the next 2 games which I believe that we can do.
Many of you were calling for Henry to be out of the team (which I don’t agree with) but an injury has forced Mick’s hand and we now must play an attacking 4-5-1.
I think that Van Damme, Milijas and Mancienne should be the central midfield 3 with Jarvis and Hunt causing havoc on the flanks and now Doyler has broken his duck I fully expect him to go on a run.
THE WANDERERS WILL NEVER DIE, WE’RE KEEP THE GOLD FLAG FLYING HIGH.

Yes excellent.. a 31 year old has been, on trial who has 1 goal in 23 games and hasn’t played all season, great!! Mick is a muppet when it comes to signings, we had JEROME THOMAS on trial but we let him go because Mick didn’t rate him, I’d swap HUNT for THOMAS anyday!! Imagine him on 1 side and Jarvis on the other!!
Tony Cottee said ‘Wolves COULD have won IF they put away there chances’ and ‘You can’t be wasteful at this level, if you don’t put away your chances you won’t win games’
Seems like our development coach is as deluded as Mick is…

If MM fails to get a result against his old Alma Mater this weekend what will it say about his management? Answer – Sunderland have progressed under Steve Bruce whereas they went nowhere with MM and Wolves have gone backwards.
His staff are all scratching their heads as to why we lost to Blackpool. The answer is simple – they scored two goals and we scored one!!! What else do they need to know? We have the worst attack in the League – its not rocket science.

I don’t understand the use of the term “must win”. Nothing happens in the club if we lose must-win games. And the next game is again a must-win game!? Spare us, please.

I’ve always liked Mick. I like what he stands for and the ethos he instills in the team. But like the fate of all our previous managers he is doomed. Why?? Because no matter how well the team has done previously it all counts for nothing because we are now struggling. And as soon as that happens the Molineux faithful get twitchy. Mad Mick out. New blood in. Its the same with every manager. Somehow this will make everything better and the team will kick-on and motor up the league table. Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! I believe a new manager brought in at this stage of the season is football suicide.
In my opinion I think the team has lost its combative edge. After the dust settled on the whole ‘dirty wolves’ fiasco we have tried to play free flowing footy. I’d like to see us play more like how we did against Newcastle, but week in week out. Tough (but fair) tackling, pressing quickly when not in possession and breaking quicker than Cheryl Cole on a chat show.
I’d love to see us get a result at the weekend, just to reaffirm the belief that we are actually a decent side with decent players. We can do it. I belive our friendly neighbours down the road managed to a few seasons ago and they had nowhere near the quality we have in our squad.
Keep the faith my friends, the resurgence is nigh – UTW!!!

26, you can’t compare Sunderland and Wolves as simply as that.
Mick has been given money at Wolves but there’s no doubt Bruce, in terms of transfer fees & wages, is working with a far larger budget now than Mick had at Sunderland or has now with us.
You also can’t say we’ve gone backwards under McCarthy, we’re unrecognisable from the club he inherited and we’ve not even really gone backwards since last year. We struggled then & we’re struggling now…. in what is probably a more competitive league.
Maybe you should try judging progress over a bigger time frame than just 1 90 minute game. If you’re going to pick just one game, I wonder how much progress Sunderland fans thought Bruce was making when Newcastle spanked them 5-1 !

some good points made by various posters, the match is heading for a sell out,
the anti mm brigade are just waiting for sunderland to win and therefore they will get thier wish and mm will be out by sat night.
they claim to be realists and wont put up with anything less than the best for wwfc,
and in turn have suggested martin o’niel/sean o driscoll as replacements
both decent shouts but, neither will win the premier league or f.a.cup or league cup or a european trophy for the simple reason that morgan needs to give the new manager the money to buy top quality 6 or 7 international players and he will never do that as 99% of club owners never invest so much money and trust the manager and if you have any doubts about this article just ask roman abramovich and jose mourinho.
i,ve been called deluded and a happyclapper in the past, but the only thing all suporters want is for wwfc to be succesfull.
personally i would never wish for my team to lose just because i dont like this manager or that manager and hope they get the sack.
the club need all its supporters especially at this time. the time will come when morgan decides to invest heavily in new players and choose a new manager.

Dear Sir Billy, so what happens if we are still 5 points or more adrift by January. Do you continue as a ‘happy clapper’ or join the ‘negative morons’ Most posts on here are from passionate and loyal fans who are worried by our current position. It is irrelevant what people on here state or reckon that we should do, as at the end of the day Morgan and to a lesser extent Moxey will decide and it is highly likely that MM will remain in charge.
It has been a funny season as I personally have been to every league game and the only one we definitely deserved to lose was the Wigan game. Admittedly we were getting battered by Bolton and yet still could have got a point. There have been many other good away performances but at the end of the day, we must start winning now or we are a goner. Injuries are a concern but it is going to now be down to MM picking the best team available – that has not happened many times this season – defending properly, being better in midfield and putting the chances away. A massive task and things are not looking good but there is a chance we can survive but I believe a win on Saturday is a must!

Rightly so.
1. Ground development more important than Football.
2. No long term view about the Managerial Side.(Sean O’Driscoll).
3. Wolves signed Michael Mancienne for 3rd season on trot. Chelsea waiting for Wolves to cough up £4M. Why are they trying to sign Tamas from WBA in preference to recalling him.
4. Last 2 seasons SIGNATURE signings to keep the fans happy early doors. Dolye+Fletcher, surrounded by Championship Players?

Well i think every point and opinion has been raised here. I do think it’s a must win! There is a lot of people i see again shouting for O’Neil please god no, again i will say great manager in Scotland but the so was Gordon Strachan look what’s happened to him! O’Driscoll where is his Prem experience in our situation Q. is that the way forward? A. not at all! I don’t wish for any player to be injured but in light of Edwards & Henry injured a Mancienne, Jones & Milijas middle would look more attacking but it means only Doyle gets the nod i can’t help but feel for Fletcher (who is starting to look like a pointless buy when we don’t play him) I am a fan of the lad and think he would get goals given playing time. Hopefully we can get a win on Saturday but i do think McCarthy needs to change things even if he thinks the players he’s playing are performing points win prizes and when we’re not picking up points there should be changes. Everyone is intitled to there opinion & intitled to voice it but only Morgans counts hopefully he will voice one soon if changes among the squad aren’t seen!!!

We don’t have the worst attack in the Prem.
We’ve scored 14 – the same as Fulham. Wigan have scored 10, and West Ham, 11.
You’d have a better argument if you said we have the worst defence in the Prem, since we are yet to keep a clean sheet – but even that’s not strictly true. West Ham and the Baggies have conceded the same, and Blackpool two more than us.
Just as well you’re not in charge of our rockets.
29, Big Nasty
You make an interesting point. After the unfair demonisation of Wolves following the Fulham game (a metaphorical lynching which some of our own fans took part in, shamefully), we’ve lost a fair bit of bite. We might have climbed out of the Fair Play relegation zone, but I’d prefer we were out of the real relegation zone…

I understand that the Ground Development is linked to success on the pitch?
We have a manager? Sean O’Driscoll has done well at Doncaster and has Wolverhampton links but has he managed in the Prem, won promotion to the Prem or managed in the World Cup finals? When Mick goes we can all debate managerial candidates, what good does it do now?
Chelsea recognise that Mancienne is not ready for them (and may never be) but he is a Premiership quality footballer, getting better as he matures.
Jarvis a Championship player? this group of players got us promoted and stopped up last season, they are therefore Premiership Footballers. If we get relegated I bet there is a rush to sign quite a few of our squad by Prem Clubs.

So we will play two up front? This is a vote of no confidence in SEB and the £7M Man.
Surely our defence needs strengthening, so shouldn’t Manciene be playing in defence?
Guess its in the Chelsea deal that Manciene plays whatever? hence his strange positions this year again.

I despair of this silly man and his “tell it like it is” comments. Who is responsible for buying and selecting forwards who can’t put away chances and defenders who crack at crucial moments when under pressure?

Let’s not even start on the tactical deficiencies on show last Saturday and on other occasions.

If Bagayoko plays as much as Bent then it’s no big deal!
Two up front is debatable – so long as we win they can play 8-1-1 for me! but agree Fletcher and SEB both deserve a run in the team. For me Doyle is not doing enough (goals or workrate) and Fletcher may give more in the lone striker role.
As Mancienne has not played in every game its clearly not in the Chelsea deal that he plays? where he plays is down to Mick but I would like to seem him at centre half now he has added a bit more weight to his slight frame.
Demolition is for a car park, which will generate income. Moving the pitch is construction!!

If he does go there will be a queue of Championship clubs wanting to take him on,managers with a proven record of winning promotion to the Prem are like gold dust.

some positive comments on here, but like West Ham I think we are in a relegation fight for the rest of the season. I dont say it to be negative but because its true.
The reasons are clear:
1)We cant keep a clean sheet- we have not had a settled defence all season and really have missed craddock and Zubar.Stearman, foley together with ward are just not good enough together
2)We Dont score enough goals – I dont care what the stats say I mean winning goals or goals to get us a point, like against blackpool and bolton.
3)We continue to give away early or lates goals.
4) We dont have enough leaders on the pitch, and will really miss Craddock, Henry and Berra on saturday.
I dont care what Mick says about confidence, losing becomes a habit and confidence will get low. if you keep losing every week its really hard to break. The silly mistakes are signs of this.
Sunderland dont have a great away record but they can score goals and have plenty of creativity. I think they are a better team than Bolton and Blackpool.
I cant see us keeping a clean sheet with the players available, and think we should play one upfront. If its one possibly fletcher instead of Doyle.I cant see our losing run ending on saturday. I would really love to be wrong though.

Bemused – I think the point you miss (I don’t know how long you’ve been reading these pages) is that the same people were saying we wouldn’t go up 2 years ago, and then that we wouldn’t stay up last year. They are just NEGATIVE people. I don’t doubt their opinions are genuine and contain some truth, but it’s hard to take them seriously when they’ve wanted McCarthy out since the day he arrived.
The fact that people are on here questioning Mick’s passion and commitment shows how litle they understand.

33) welsh wolves…….
Kightly, Jarvis, Foley, Henry, Milijas, Zubar, Guedioura, Doyle, Ebanks-Blake (to name a few). All players signed by McCarthy’s supposedly ‘pathetic scouting system.’And all delivered on a shoestring. Even the likes of Collins and Keogh proved their worth in the Championship.
I’m not saying that McCarthy hasn’t made any poor signings, but have a look at some of Alex Ferguson’s signing over the years. Kleberson and Djemba-Djemba anyone? All managers make poor signings.
And 2 years ago we were top of the Championship after an unbeaten run of 10 games, so god knows why you were ‘saying it’ then.
I’ll be interested to see who plays midfield on Saturday – I suspect it will be Milijas, Jones and the much overrated Mancienne, but we have to go 4-5-1 from now on, we’re not good enough to play 4-4-2! I’d like to see Fletcher starting instead of Hunt, who has struggled in last couple of games.
Let’s get behind the lads and McCarthy on Saturday.
