Kevin Doyle wants end to early goals
Tuesday 23rd November 2010, 4:00PM GMT.
Wolves striker Kevin Doyle has urged his team-mates to ‘beat the early rush’ by getting through the first 10-15 minutes without conceding to rebuild confidence.
Mick McCarthy’s side have lost four in a row but the last three – against Arsenal, Bolton and Blackpool – have come after conceding in the first three minutes.
Doyle, whose late consolation couldn’t save Wolves from their ninth defeat in 11 at Bloomfield Road, insisted his team-mates just need to get a foothold in a game to give themselves a chance.
He said: “That’s been three games on the trot that we’ve conceded an early goal and no matter what formation or players that are picked, it puts us on the back foot and we lose a bit of confidence.
“If we could just get past the 10-15 minute mark and we were doing well then it would be a different story – we would build confidence.
“But going behind like that makes it difficult.”
Doyle told of how the players are trying not to allow the lack of confidence affect them but admitted it’s proving difficult.
He said: “We try to forget about it but it’s just the way things are going for us.
“Everyone kept going on Saturday and kept trying to get on the ball to do well but it’s not easy when things are going against us.
“We’ve just got to keep fighting.”
Doyle revealed boss McCarthy tried to rally the players immediately after their latest setback.
The striker said: “He’s told us to keep our heads up and keep fighting.
“It’s going to be a difficult week because we’re joint bottom of the league and it’s not nice, but we’ve got to keep battling, do the right things and hopefully it turns for us.”
