Wolves set date for Michael Kightly

Wolves’ injury-hit winger Michael Kightly must prove his fitness by the end of January to play any part this season.

Kightly, sidelined for almost a year, is recovering from another operation on his injured knee and is hoping to be added to Wolves’ plans for the second half of the season.

McCarthy can make changes to his 25-man Premier League squad during the January transfer window.

But the Molineux boss has hinted strongly that he will not add Kightly to the group unless he is fit by the end of the window, even if there is hope of him recovering later in the season.

McCarthy said: “Kights has had his operation and is very positive about it.

“It was on one of his knees and he goes back to see the surgeon in six weeks time.

“He’s only had keyhole surgery, which is not as intrusive. He’s not out for the season, not at all, but he’ll have to be fit for January 31 to get into the squad for us.

“There’s always the opportunity to go on loan somewhere else after that but I want him playing for me because he’s a very good player.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy welcomes Karl Henry back into his plans today admitting the “dangerous play” row had harmed his team’s Premier League campaign. Wolves captain and McCarthy lieutenant Henry has completed a three-match ban for the red card challenge on Wigan’s Jordi Gomez earlier this month.

That brought to a head the row about dangerous play which pitched Wolves as one of the prime culprits in a debate focusing on over-physical tackling.

The issue has since begun to fade from the game’s agenda of hot topics — although not before Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey took a fresh blast at Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger this week — and McCarthy admits he is relieved.

Favours

But he hinted the damage may already have been done as he said: “I’m delighted Karl is available for selection again. He’s an important player for us.

“I think the whole issue has died down in the media, although I’ve got to say that it has had an effect.

“I go to games now and the crowd are roaring for a foul or booking at every challenge. It’s changing the way the game is played.

“And I’ve got to say it did us no favours. It’s hard enough winning games in the Premier League without being scrutinised by everyone about everything.

“It doesn’t help when that critical spotlight is being put on the team.”

Wolves have not won in the Premier League since the opening day of the season and McCarthy feels his still comparatively inexperienced squad were both unsettled and distracted by the media-fuelled debate.

He added: “I’m not going to say the bookings were all unfair — some were, not all.

“But we also played some really good football.”

That’s all very interesting, but I’m off to the Newhampton for a pork bap and a Rioja and there’s nothing you can do to stop me.

    JACK the HAT.

Kightly will be back for the Championship.

    Mick,
If it cuts out dirty play, then it changes the game for the good, and will save so many broken legs. You state wolves haven’t won since the beginning of the season, does’t that tell you fitness and skill needs improvement?. Adjust those and place players in their rightful positions and you will be on the right track. JtH.

I suspect McCarthy will slip back into his bad ways today.. henry back.. He cant pass and we’ve the worst tackling success rate in the premiership which says it all about his abilitites.

I’ve enjoyed our passing game these last 2 weeks, and Im afraid this is way out of Henry’s league. Worse still, I suspect Ward will be back at left back today.

    I live in hope though.

Must say i think kight’s is out for the season for us, but i hope he will go out on loan in the new year and be fighting fit for next season.

glad to see kh back today, lets hope he doesn’t change the way he play’s! been reading and listening to all the rubish regarding the wolves bad tackles but no one has talked about the injustice we have suffered from the ref’s that have cost us points so far! hope fans get behind the lads today, 3 points would be great would settle for a point

I still have my doubts that Kites will play again for Wolves this season? I hope and pray im ‘wrong’, but its got to be a ‘big’ doubt. He seems to be ‘suffering a crisis of confidence’ within himself, as much as the injury is causing him physically?. Im still concerned ”IMO” that he may never play at the ‘TOP LEVEL’ ever again, i DO hope he proves ME wrong. Im glad Karl Henry is back today, but i hope he plays Milijas instead of Jones?, UTW: GOOD LUCK TODAY LADS:

Surely the team should be the same as last week. They played well enough to be given another chance to get a run going.Let Henry wait for his chance McCarthy and don`t keep changing the side unless you drop your son.

We’ve missed kightly badly. we’ve missed him as much as we missed lescott in the 03/04 premier league season. if not more!! he was easily one of our best players in the promotion season and he could have been great in the prem for us (still could be). i just fear that this injury is gonna kill all that massive potential he had 2 years ago. we will never know how good he would have been now if he didnt get injured which is a real shame. if he gets fully fit by january or even if he goes out on loan and comes back to us for the start of next season. he could still be a massive player for us. please lets see henry on the bench today. we’ve been better without him and if he is to come back into the side he needs to earn it again! couple of substitute appearances and see if he can prove his worth. UTW!!!!

maybe if muppet mick who said 2 days before the birmingham game that he would not play kits because he was not fit, and then after 30
min put him on and as not played since.a
championship manager who only picks championship players and sadly unless he goes
    that where we will be.
