Wolves back Matt Jarvis for England
Wednesday 27th October 2010, 3:00PM BST.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has joined the growing clamour calling for winger Matt Jarvis to be handed a chance with England.
The manager revealed the winger is on national boss Fabio Capello’s radar after the Italian’s assistanrt Franco Baldini confirmed their interest.
England host France at Wembley next month and in-form Jarvis could be included, after another star turn in last night’s gut-wrenching 3-2 Carling Cup defeat at Manchester United.
Visiting supporters at Old Trafford called for the 24-year-old to be called up and McCarthy knows Jarvis is in the international spotlight.
He said: “I was sat next to Fabio’s assistant Baldini at Stoke on Sunday and he spoke highly of him.
“He’s a terrific player and is really important for us. We’re all delighted with him and there can’t be too many better wingers around at the minute.
“He’s very exciting going forward for us and is a lovely lad who has just got better and better. He just soaks up information and wants to improve all the time.
“I think the fans have recognised that he is playing very well.”
But, despite the speculation, Jarvis insisted afterwards he is only focused on helping Wolves away from the Premier League drop zone.
He said: “I’m making sure I’m playing well for Wolves but if anything else happens then fantastic.”
The former Gillingham ace, who signed a new five-year deal last month, terrorised ex-England defenders Wes Brown and Gary Neville all evening as Wolves lost to a last-gasp Javier Hernandez goal.
Jarvis was replaced by Kevin Doyle with four minutes left at Old Trafford, as McCarthy eyed Saturday’s Molineux showdown with Manchester City.
The manager explained he cannot afford to lose his star man while he is in such good form.
He said: “We brought him off because he was just starting to struggle and I want him fit for Saturday.
“The last thing I need is for ‘Jarvo’ to be running on empty or have a strain.
“He was excellent on Saturday, he’s played again on Tuesday and we need to keep him right.
“I put fresh legs on to try and win the game with Marcus Bent and Kevin Doyle.”

Quality player………..Jarvo for ENGLAND!!!!
right brill performance last night lads should be really proud!!!
1. can someone tell me why stephen ward is starting ahead of george elokobi ?
2. jarvis was probs the best i have seen him play last night and yh i no u wanted to rest him for saturday mick but there was 4 minutes left ? what does 4 mins difference make fair enough gone extra time take him off but if u seen on the other wing from about the 70th minute hunt was knackerd he is only just back from injury and u blast him out full 90 mins at old trafford silly boy!
3. was it just me or did mouyokolo look a really promising center half ?

Jarvo really deserves it, he would already be in the England squad if he was playing for a London club……Up The Wolves !!

‘Try and win the game with Marcus Bent’
An oxymoron if ever there was one

Fresh legs by putting Marcus Bent on?? Mick you got it wrong yet again and lost us the game. They put on fresh legs and won the game!
Delighted to see that his main aim is to keep us up. I was initially surprised when he was substituted sa he was causing so much panic in the United ranks but, on reflection have to agree that a repeat performance on Saturday is more important than the Carling Cup. Well done Jarvo, your cap will not be long coming

One bright spark in otherwise dreary opening to season.Deserving a chance against France at wembley.Brilliant last night against 2 top class full backs, but if i have one critiszm is that he needs to be less selfish and have more cracks at goal.

Was it really a “gut-crunching” defeat? I mean, let’s not go overboard here!
Mind you, we’re going overboard on this “Jarvis for England” thing, must be something in the water.

Well there’s a nice positive article. Juts one quote at the end… I wonder what the whingers will comment on?

MICK I CAN UNDERSTAND BRINGING JARVO OFF …..BUT 4 MIN FROM FULL TIME WHY BOTHER BRING HIM OFF EARLYER IF ITS TO SAVE HIM.WHY BRING EBY OFF LET ME THINK….WAS IT SO HES FIT TO SIT ON THE BENCH ON SATURDAY.WHY WAS THERE NO WINGERS ON THE BENCH TO REPLACE JARVO OR HUNT,AND CAN ANY 1 TELL WHAT BENT IS DOING AT THIS CLUB HES A JOKE
Report abuse
About time too. but he should have finished the game last night along with seb. best player on the pitch last night, not just in black n gold.
Y not. This player seems to get better and better and it would be great for wolves to have a player in the England team. Get rid of the old and bring in the new.

I for one will be glad to see Karl Henry back to replace the ‘weak’ Mancienne, who is totally useless in the holding midfield role ”IMO” he was awful last night, far to weak in the tackle, he ‘huffs and puffs’ but does nothing, he did nothing to try and stop their 2nd goal. And my other change would be to bring Milijas in for David Jones, who gets caught in possesion far to much, and plays short balls to team mates who are either marked or have players breathing down their necks. Like i said Saturday why not give Milijas 6 games on the trot, see what he can do,he played well v Chelsea then MM drops him last night?.How will that help his confidence? UTW:
I am biased obviously but would choose Jarvis over SWP, Lennon & J.Cole anyday.
Totally agree with the comments made about Bent – never understood this one. He can’t offer anything more than Mairhoffer/Vokes/Keogh – all out on loan? I can’t reallly seeing us buy him in January. he should never come onto the pitch before SEB or Fletcher anyway.
All those that wanted MM to justify taking off Jarvis have got it now.
Strange substitutions from McCarthy….Sure if you are saving Jarvis take him off after an hour but when the momentum was with us thanks to Ebanks and Jarvis, surely another 5 minutes would have made no difference? If we get to extra time, then make the change. Ebanks won’t even play on Saturday. The guy makes mistakes, he is limited.

I find it amusing how we lose conceding goals and certain wolves fans confirm it was a “brilliant performance”.It is like these fans can’t seem to see defending as a sign of a good performance, we shed goals but the team plays well? Nobecause defending is as important as attacking – too many fans get over excited by a few passes strung together 30 yards out from goal and that stands for more than the defensive problems.
defending is a massive part of the game and a teams performance, 3 more soft goals conceded. But nevermind, Hunt hit the bar so we must be the unluckiest team on the planet – total rubbish. You don’t lose 5 out of 6 playing well.
Jarvo has been quality and deserves a chance if he was playing for Man City or even on the bench for them he would be in the England squad, you only have to look at Shaun wright Phillips whats he ever done for England in the 40+ caps he has had and on current form is he better than Jarvo.
Deserved plaudits for a guy that comtinues to improve leaps and bounds.
I sometimes think that the England calls are a bit premature, but then I think of a Stewart Downing or woefully out of form SWP on either flank and then Jarvo seems like a real contender.
does anyone else not understand how Jarvis didnt get man of the match last night by far the best player on the pitch.
Jarvo as the ingredients to be an excellent footballer,he would excel even more if he was given unconditional license to thrill, and be positive in his play at all times.
last night the performance begs the question why we dont do something similar week in week out, when we went behind we went for the jugular and elokobi scored and it seemed the whole wolves team was in the box and any number of them could have scored.
2ND half also showed that maybe it should be DOYLE who should be sub, because when he is in the team we constantly pump the ball to him with no results. Both seb and fletch looked good in the 2nd half and caused a few problems that resulted in oppurtunities.
Hennessy BALL distribution was good it was not just hoof the ball like USA as being doing, but again this maybe to do with DOYLE.
FOLEY was excellent and is a premiership player,ELOKOBI looked sharp and headed alot of balls away given time and backing he is able for the league,Hunt looks a busy player and will be a significant addition when fitter, when he got ball he looked to play forward everytime,Mouyloko looks big strong and comfortable with a few more games this boy will make the position his own,We have the players but I do still beleive mick as a syndrome “I will play my favourites!”.
Again it showed we can play so from now on it should be let the opposition worry about us,let jarvo hunt fletch seb milijias jones attack.Let foley elokobi/zubar moyokolo berra defend.send mancienne back he was poor again .for those who dont agree, look at moyokolo looked at ease and controlled and not frantic as the game went on mancienne as never looked as controlled.

8) You obviously do not go to too many games. Jarvis was top drawer last night and on Saturday and had 3 England internationals struggling – Cole, Brown and Neville. He is too quick for most full backs, as was shown with the blatant penalties – not awarded – against Newcastle and Spurs. Quite easily our stand out performer of the season.
On last nights performances, Mouyokolo and Elokobi are pushing for starting slots. Jones will be lucky to keep Milijas out. Fletcher did not do enough to justify a start on Saturday and if we are playing two up, SEB may have done enough with his second half show!
Starting XI against Citeh – Hahnemman; Foley, Stearman, Mouyoloko, Elokobi; Hunt, Milijas, Jones/Henry, Jarvis; Doyle, SEB. C’mon Mick, show a bit of invention!
I think we did well last night why because for once he picked the right players in the right positions! That team v’s man city, take Dave Jones out because I have seen shippers turn quicker, he is awful.
Watch most the goals we have conceded this season over half are down to him losing the ball in the middle of the park and the opposition midfield is running out our back four. It’s not like he even wants to play for us which is worse. Play Milijas!!
Play elokobi who is rubbish but better than ward. I don’t think we are far off then. (of course you could always play van dam in his correct position, but we no that won’t happen!)
But…………. We all no MM we will be back 2 the usual suspects picked because that put a shift in and back to 5 in midfield players out of position ect. Which is why one good showing last night does not mean everything is all of a sudden ok. MM has still got to go.
One good thing MM did do was take Jarvis off before nevile kicked him up in the air!
I’ll go for that XI too skywalker!
Jarvis is a very good player, but if he wants to play for England he needs to learn how to cross the ball – zero assists so far this season but 763 misplaced crosses. An hour a day during at least a month practising crosses.. then he might be England material, but not now.
15 Luke Skywalker I agree 100% but I think Henry is a certainty.
How come you have not put everybody’s favourite Stephen Ward in. What a difference George Elokobi made to the defence and was not afraid to go up for the Goal.
Now we have learnt how to score, can we do it again please, it was such a good feeling.
p.s. I was kidding about Stephen Ward
Report abuse
He will fit in with England well, especially if if he plays like he did in the first half.
He could only get better in the second

Jarvis is a quality player in a second rate team. If he was playing for a Man U or Chelsea he would have been in the England squad a long time ago. He is a cnfidence player and right now he is playing with a lot of confidence. Pity the rest of the players are not up to his standard.
WHAT A JOKE LOSING TO MAN U’s THIRD TEAM.
We are going to struggle this season and will be fortunate to stay up with a manager who is incompetent.
Jarvis seems to get better and better. It would certainly be interesting to see him in an England shirt against the French. However, playing at international level is not the same as playing at club level. Nevertheless, worth a chance.
Good point 15.
I was moaning to anyone who would listen on the same point this morning.
While I did think we played quite well we got beat again; Chelsea is possibly acceptable but this was against Man Utd reserves some of whom had never played in the first team.
I’m finding it difficult to take MM’s interviews seriously; if we’re a good team and don’t need more players why are we bottom of the league?
Incidently; our goals were scored by full-backs, how many shots on target did the forwards have?
Last night’s performance was good (2nd half only) against a poor Man Utd XI. However, there was enough to suggest that we’ll be alright if we pick our best team – last night’s ‘second string’ is arguably better than our first team!
What is glaringly obvious as we sit 2nd bottom after a quarter of the season played is that certain players have had their chance and not performed.
Nearly all of the supporters I speak too and who post on here agree.
1. Ward is a liability at left back and is out of form. Van Damme must be given a run out in the position he was bought for. If Mick still can’t give him longer than 45mins, then give Mancienne a go there (he played LB for Chelsea) or Elokobi – anyone but Ward!
2. Mouyokolo looks to be potentially our best CB – quick, strong, reads the game well and plays the ball out of defence. The same can’t be said for Berra who get’s dragged out of position and is achingly slow!
WE ARE THE ONLY TEAM NOT TO HAVE KEPT A CLEAN SHEET!!!
3. Midfield – we don’t look strong enough or creative enough in the middle. For me we have to play Milijas who is excellent at set pieces and will get at least 5 shots in himself during a game. Ideally we should play 3 in the middle as teams easily pass through us which leaves the defence exposed.
4. We should play 4-3-3. Now Jarvis and Hunt are back we have creativity and goals to support Doyle. Alternativley Fletcher can play alone or wide left in place of either of Doyle or Hunt. We have been sussed out playing 4-4-2 and we are not good enough to take teams head on and expect to dominate midfield. This is not the Championship. It’s no coincidence we survived last year after changing from 4-4-2 to 4-5-1.

You would pick jarvis over lennon?? LOL, agree he needs to work on his crosses a bit more before he will be considered for england, i mean honsetly what was fabio’s no.2 going to say to mick? ”No we don’t want him” he is our best player by a mile though and he will improve game by game
Report abuse
Ferguson brought Gary Neville on to try and stop Jarvis running the show and our boy immediately embarrassed him by going round the outside and crossing just like Waggy used to do. Then MM takes him off to save him for saturday. What ? with 4 minutes plus injury time left. He was quite capable of creating the winner in that 8 minutes instead little Pea Shooter did…and I disagree with taking SEB off too, it should have been Fletcher (albeit he created Foley’s goal). To crown it all those DHs at Sky gave MOM to Park. How does that work ?
Berra was magnificent and although Mouyokolo got caught out for the winner he played well . Liked the look of Hunt in the second half, he does some unorthodox things.
Dave Jones was patchy last night and maybe Milijas will figure instead on Saturday and with Henry back and Elokobi given another start at left back we may just suprise ManCity.
26-every day i would pick jarvis over lennon, beats a player more often than lennon, same level of crossing, works harder for the team than lennon , and lennons attributes are? oh yes he is a fast runner.
no coincidence that last night jarvis was a lot more dangerous on the left, the full backs dont know if he is going down the line or cut inside when he plays left.
35, though i agree jarvis is a quality player he is no where near the same level as lennon who is an england international and has already been to 2 world cups aged just 23, plays in the champions league, he is fast, has skill, ALWAYS beats his man, can score and already has lots of assists this season, chelsea, man utd and liverpool all wanted to sign him so spurs offered him a double your money contract, if jarvis is same level as lennon how come we signed him from gillingham for less than a million and no one else wanted him?? Though i agree jarvis is a quality assest to our squad i have to disagree that he is better then lennon and other players you mentioned

19 – Michael…spot on. I agree that Jarvo should have been man of the match. However, we were playing one of the top 4, so Jarvo didn’t really deserve it ‘cos he plays for Wolves. The Premier, indeed, is full of sh.t!
I doubt Jarvo will play a full game for England until he leaves Wolves and joins a ‘real’ team. That’s the way it is. However, the top teams can’t do without us fodder, can they? A bit like the SPL….!
The FA and FIFA are corrupt – they know it, and so do we! I reckon Platini has bought the rights to European football…that’s the only way he can get away with it!
As for Blatter, the man’s a has-been joke.

Jarvis was just pure class last night and I think it was great to see Gary Neville come unstuck as he was sent on to stop him.
I can’t understand why Bent came on and SEB went off, SEB was causing their defence problems, a different problem to which Jarvis was causing.
I think what we need to do in January is to buy a forward that is deadly, not 1 that can put a shift in, just the 1 that can find the net. This means WWFC would score more goals and with Jarvis providing how he is at the moment a good deadly striker would easily score plenty goals.
Would like to see SEB and Doyle link up as SEB has a few goals already this season and it was a great performance from him last night, putting his physique about and craeting.
Take performances like these last 2 into the Bolton, Blackpool games after the run of top teams we have and it’ll be 6 points and few goals scored.
C’MON YOU WOLVESSSS….

Sorry mate, I don’t respond well to the phrase “you obviously don’t do to many games”, partly because I live in London and have no choice (although I’ll be in the fancy boxes this Saturday so feel free to give me a wave) and partly because the phrase clearly demarcates most people who say it as a bit of a plank, although your other posts at least lead me to believe that assessment may be a little harsh in your case.
Jarvis is having an excellent season and the latter half of last season was excellent too, but there are way too many people in the same position ahead of him in the England set-up. This story is what is known in the press as a flyer – journalist asks leading question, manager (who can’t possibly respond, “What, Jarvo for England? You’re having a laugh, aren’t you?!”) gets led into predictable response, and hey presto, you’ve got news. Best served with a pinch of salt, those flyers…

Great 2nd half against United on Tuesday and even if they were the reserves – they had some real quality out there. Great news. From what I’ve seen of Jarvis this season he deserves a chance. I’m glad to see Midland players getting a bit of recognition for once. Hopefully Shorey and Carson can get a well deserved call up as well. But until these players are put on the squad list as their performances deserve, England will still overlook midland based stars for thier northern and southern counterparts.
