Keep the faith urges Mick McCarthy

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has urged his stars to keep the faith after they suffered late Carling Cup heartbreak.

Wolves crashed out in a 3-2 defeat at Manchester United last night with Manchester City next at Molineux on Saturday, followed by a return to Old Trafford and the visit of Arsenal.

But McCarthy insisted his men do not fear the big hitters.

He said: “We’re all relishing the challenges ahead. They are really tough games but they are great games to be involved in.

“We have shown against Manchester United away and Chelsea away that we can compete against them.

“We need to scrape a result out from somewhere and there would be no better one than Manchester City on Saturday.”

Wolves are second bottom of the Premier League with just one win ahead of a testing set of games.

But McCarthy is convinced, after gutsy performances against United and in the 2-0 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday, their luck will turn.

“If you’re playing well and getting beaten you’ve got a chance but if you’re hopeless and are getting beaten you might as well pack up and go home.

“That’s not the case here and with the team spirit we’ve got and the way we are playing things are still good in the camp.

“We can’t do anything other than keep playing like that – we can’t do any more – but if we do that I believe it will turn for us.”

Bebe and Ji-Sung Park had twice fired United ahead in a frantic second-half, but Wolves fought back through Elokobi’s first goal for the club and Foley’s first of the season to leave McCarthy frustrated but proud.

He said: “Again I’m pleased with the performance but disappointed with the result.

“The lads are great, and their spirit and character has never been in question.

“We played well on Saturday but couldn’t put the ball in the net and we’ve played well tonight and scored two but conceded three.”
