Wolves’ second ‘Mission Impossible’

Wolves’ second ‘Mission Impossible’

Wolves will field a much-changed line-up for the second in their series of ‘Mission Impossibles.’

But manager Mick McCarthy is adamant his players are still capable of adding to the Carling Cup surprises so far this season.

With Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester City and Chelsea removed from the competition, the quarter-final place awaiting the winners of tonight’s Old Trafford tie with Manchester United is more appealing than ever.

But the game is the latest in a sequence of five against the powerhouse clubs of English football and Wolves go into the game long-odds favourites to pull off a shock.

On a day when he received a worrying bulletin on one of his wide players, Michael Kightly, McCarthy is at least relieved to have another – Stephen Hunt – fit enough to be in contention for his first start.

Yet McCarthy insists this own changes should not be interpreted as a down-grading of the importance of this game to a Wolves team anxious to find only their second win of the season.

He said: “Everyone knows about the games we’ve got. We’ve just been beaten by Chelsea, we’ve got Man United in the cup, Manchester City in the league, United in the league then Arsenal in the league.

“So wouldn’t it be great to have a victory of any sorts amongst all of those?

“And if it’s going to be in the Carling Cup, then let’s have it.”

Wolves were genuinely buoyed by their form at Chelsea, with McCarthy insisting they won’t go anywhere to lose.

He said: “We are not expected to get anything over the next few weeks against the teams we’re playing.  But we don’t go into those games feeling that way.

“If we get something out of them – fantastic. If we don’t, it will make Bolton on November 13 at home a big game, if it wasn’t big enough already.”
