Wolves boss not scared of the drop

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has insisted his side will not get dragged into a relegation dogfight.

The team currently sit second from bottom in the Premier League after Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Chelsea made it eight games without a win.

Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Blackburn yesterday left them three points from safety with almost a quarter of the season gone.

McCarthy’s men don’t look like finding it any easier with three of the current top four to come in the next four games.

Eleven months ago, McCarthy declared Wolves were in a fight for survival after a 4-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

But, despite the current slump, the manager has no such fears this time around.

He said: “We went to Chelsea last year and I said afterwards that we were in a relegation dogfight.

“We really got our bellies tickled last year. We were poor – we didn’t make a tackle for 73 minutes.

“That wasn’t the case on Saturday. And I don’t think we’ll be in the bottom three come the end of the season.

“We’ve got to stay with it. We will weather any storm that comes, like we did last year, and pick up points where we can.”

McCarthy has seen Albion pick up 15 points from the same number of games – nine more than Wolves.

But the manager remains unconcerned at the current better form of their rivals.

He said: “It doesn’t really matter. You hear everybody crowing at the minute, and we had it last year.

“We stayed up and some other teams who had good starts didn’t.

“So we’ve got to maintain belief and pick the points up where we can.”

Despite the result, Wolves produced one of the best performances of the season on Saturday.

And McCarthy believes it’s vital his players keep the belief over the next four games against Manchester United in the Carling Cup tomorrow, Manchester City, Arsenal then United away again in the league.

He said: “It’s a challenge but it’s better than Scunthorpe, Doncaster, Barnsley and Derby. It’s better this way.

“We’ll get whatever we can out of these games and then we start on Bolton, Blackpool, Sunderland and Wigan.

“We’ve got to maintain our performances and the belief we can play like we did on Saturday.”

Mick may not be concerned, but I am certain there are 26,000 people who watch every other week who are very very concerned over the square peg, put a shift in attitude that comes from the Manager.
In four games time it may be too late to get out of the dog fight.

Sorry to break this to you Mick, but we are in a relegation dogfight. An easy start to the season yielded nowhere near the amount of points we needed. Now we’re clinging onto some well worn platitudes about performing well against a big club. So what? We lost!
At least against Scunthorpe, Doncaster and Derby we’d actually try and WIN instead of shutting-up shop against a terrible West Ham side in the hope of getting a draw.
Why should we expect anything agaisnt Bolton and the like when we literally refuse to go out and try to win?
How about a reporter asks McCarthy something like: “So Mick, with 9 games gone and £20 million spent in the summer, did you expect you’d be bottom of the league, trying to protect a point against a feeble West Ham (AT HOME!!!) with barely any of your summer signings featuring?”

Noble words and all that, but in order for us to be not involved in a relegation dogfight, there will need to be several teams below us, the obvious names being Blackpool (who have beaten Liverpool at Anfield), West Brom (who are in the Champions League places), Wigan (who have beaten us), Newcastle (drew with us at our place) and West Ham, who seem to be realistically the only team we can definitely expect to be above come May, and yet who still came within one dodgy handball decision of beating us last week.

We are in a relegation dogfight, Mick, like it or not.

I agree with Hindmarch, why doesn’t someone ask him about the 30 million pounds he has spent in the last 15 months yet we have Berra, Edwards and Ward still playing? He simply isn’t able to take us on. Milijas did well on Saturday but the fact is he was pretty much bombed out until he had no choice but to play him. McCarthy is so limited. How he could not improve that defence in the Summer is staggering – we were playing 2 defenders and 1 up front to protect them for most the season!

I am not a fan of McCarthy but I respect and acknowledge what he has achieved at Wolves – remember the side he inherited from Hoddle. However Saturday again proved that both McCarthy and Connor lack what it takes to make the necessary changes at times when games can be changed. Second half Wolves were causing Chelsea problems – so McCarthy and Connor send the subs out to warm up. 20 minutes later they are still warming up, then E-Blake is told to get ready to come on. A further 10 mins elapse and Wolves still make no changes. Therefore it was not surprising to see MM and TC look like spare parts standing on the pitch side when Chelsea scored the second goal and made any substitutions by Wolves meaningless. MM has taken Wolves as far as his abilities can – Morgan will hopefully thank MM & TC with a generous golden handshake and then start planning to take Wolves to the next stage of gaining a stable footing in the Prem.

I am also pretty certain he’s not happy about Mick spending over £30 Million since we got promoted yet only 1 player (Doyle) actually gets regular first team action at the moment.

Morgan may be quiet at the moment but no matter how much Mick has done for this team it really has started to fall apart and many fans have lost faith.

What a load of rubbish, come the end of these four games we will still have many more games to pick up points and if saturdays performance is anything to go by, we will pick up points. I think I prefered last season’s ‘we will be happy with 4th from bottom’ mentality. Expectations were realistic and every point was greeted with celebration. We certainly are in a relegation fight and I’m sure Mick knows that really. He also knows we have more quality and experience than last year and teams like Blackpool with thin squads will struggle as the season goes on. West Ham might struggle, but as for one more I’m not sure.

BTW one more bid for all the ‘square peg’ muppets to actually justify their argument. Who played out of position on Saturday? Maybe van Damme on the left side of midfield is a defensive approach (it was Chelsea away!) otherwise every player was in his natural position (unless you think Ward is a striker?)

A promising performance with the team actually doing a few things right. Well done C Berra for not carrying out any arm wrestling. By playing the ball and not the man, you are beginning to look the part, but there is still a way to go.

Milijas showed that there are open spaces to be found on the field of play; his problem was that his shooting was a bit off. This was be expected after weeks of inactivity. but you did show other players that open spaces exist on the pitch.

Doyle baffles us all. Looks the part, appears to be very fit but on Saturday when the Chelsea defence looked a bit dodgy, he failed to get in amongst the Chelsea defence. Did he get in a shot in that would worry a junior school goalkeeper.

The full backs or whatever else we call them these days did look vunerable again. O.K Foley looked the part at times but on the left, the Chelsea full back who came back after a long time out showed the frailty of that side with his runs from deep in his own half.Shall we say, we got away with it.

Never thought Chelsea were in any danger of losing. and the Chelsea team had a gentle excercise afternoon, harsh words, no. Did anyone see Chelsea break into a sweat? Did you see their goalkeeper have any diificult saves make?

Final note. Ignor the statistics which gives Jones the most number of passes by a player in the in the Premier League last Saturday.
Did any pass open up the defence,? How many passes went astray? It is not how many but of what quality? There is a lot of work to do at the Molinuex

Admittedly, you pick ‘em and they give of their best but where is your experience, your planning and tactical intelligence. You have had long enough in the game to know fully that the team you are putting out lacks the technical ability to compete in the PL, not to mention your pathetic coaching and naive tactics, you are of no help to them whatsoever. Those of us who went Saturday – not the armchair supporters – can clearly say that if Wolves continue to play like that points will be accrued very quickly. One thing it did show is that we do not always need a defensive midfielder like Henry or Mancienne playing. Jones and Milijas were class and rarely gave the ball away. Although Edwards is limited he has an engine and gets up and down to support but possibly should have done better with his chance. With Jarvis and Hunt either side, there is certainly quality and creativeness in the middle of the park. The problem is that in some of the home games we will need to accomodate either Fletcher or SEB.
We also need Zubar and Mouyokolo back and challenging for places but Foley and Stearman put in very good performances.

The reason for moans are simple.

    M.M is only the manager
Mr Moxley is there to administer

    Mr Morgan bought the club.

Each one have a financial stake of sorts, just like any other business .

The suppoters. The most important people at the club. In most cases, they are born as supporters, their destiny has been planned long before they were born. They are there for life. It is their club and in moral terms they own the club. The three Ms’ are just simply care takers. Without the supporters, there is no club.

The first match proper football match I watched was in 1942 and I have been hooked ever since. This is the same for every football supporter in the country.I love watching teams of the class and skill of the Arsenal. Chelsea and Man Unt/ CitI loved watching Tom Finney, Raich Carter, Puskas, Broadbent and Clamp along with Slater and wright , Flowers and Swinbourne. but my club is Wolves and I do not want to see them back in the dumps playing Accrington Stanley or Torquay.

If the 3M’s are simply caretakers then you must agree that they are doing a pretty good job?

In the Premiership, financially sound and with ambitious plans to move the club forward?

Longivity of support (and I have been watching since mid 60′s) does not qualify any supporter (not you but others on this site) to make uneducated vindictive comments about players that are giving 100%

Why are so called supporters on this site so determined to undermine the progress made since Mick took over 3 years ago by sacking him?

Why are so called supporters so determined to drive out Moxey, the man that has stabilised the club and put us on a sound financial footing?

Why are so called supporters taking a swipe at Steve Morgan, the man that has underwritten the expenditure on players and is now prepared to underwrite the development of the ground?

The 3M’s are the best thing to happen at Wolves since Graham Turner signed Bully and if we push them out now we will return to the dark ages.

Rich – glad to amuse you. Maybe you could say something positive one day to even us up. I agree that not all our players would get into many other premiership squads, but Ward is in ours as a left back – so to labour the point (in the hope you might eventually understand it) good enough or not, he is not playing out of position.

richwolf64 – get a grip! Steven Ward has played left back in both the Championship and Premiership.

Now whether you like it or not that makes him a left back.

He played as a forward early in his career in Ireland (and a few times for Wolves) but his Wolves career has been predominantly as a left back.

At Wolves we have a tradition of slagging off Left Backs (ask Lee Naylor).

Ward has held his own despite the lack of support from fans like you.

57 – Sir Billy Quiet, what are you doing on these boards ? You can’t come on here with a degree of context, with an understanding of our clubs ethos that goes beyond singling out indivduals like Stephen Ward, or with an understanding of a long term strategy that flys in the face of the mistakes made by the club in our past that put us in the very hole that McCarthy dug us out of.

No Sir, this board is for venting anger, looking for a scapegoat in todays blame culture premier league pantomime, and believing that we would somehow be better off without the people that put us in with a chance of trying to stay in this league.

We may be relegated, Im not disputing that, but like Cornish Wolf says above, we all heard this last year and it got turned around.

I have, however, been swayed by Chris Hoggards points re the stadium. Whilst I applaud the club for the admirable positve approach, can we really be distracted by a new ground when we are clearly in for a long hard winter / season ? All available hands to the pump on keeping us up I say, and lets hopefully come back to the ground when / if its a more realistic target. Didn’t we build a wonderful ground 20 years ago that we consistantly failed to put a good team in until McCarthy turned up ?

Sir Billy Quiet, Your intentions are spot on and it is difficult to disagree with the thrust of your comments. If our owner will underwrite the cost of the ground redevelopment AND still allow a decent transfer budget that is fine. But I have not read anywhere that Steve Morgan has given such guarantees. As for Jez I think we all appreciate he runs a tight ship,it is just that he is too tight on the transfer front and we have missed out on some gems over the years. As for supporting Mick and the players I agree with you entirely.

Not posted for a year or so cause the posts on here are utterly miserable and depressing but on Saturday I got to see the game, a rarity, and I was proud to be a Wolves fan. Chelsea are by a country mile the best side in Europe, we were away and we gave a very good account of ourselves. I would rest Doyle for a couple of games as he looks tired, give Fletcher his chance, as for the rest we looked solid for what we are, a lower end of the table team who are doing their best. Will we stay up? No idea but I cannot see any reason why not, we just need a win or two and everything will look different. Just so good to see my club healthy and playing the big boys.

No they weren’t. They had only 12pts after 10 games.

I wish some of you would stop comparing the Boggies with Hull and Burnley, you’re making us sound bitter and jealous. Let’s be honest, Albion have been up and down for years and know the Prem better than both of the latter teams. They also have a bigger squad than both Hull and Burnley (as has been proven with Dorrans unable to get in the team, Odemwingie being injured, Thomas being injured etc) so injuries and suspensions won’t hit them as hard as they did the others. They have played the traditional big 4 away already and have been beating the teams who many thought would be around them. Let’s congratulate them and hope and pray that we too go on a run like them and all the Midlands teams stay up.

OK Dingles, look at the table – look at the top then look at the bottom – you are only 9 points off the top part of the table. Three decent wins and the others get three losses and the table is reversed.

No need to panic just yet. I agree that MM has a few strange ideas about management and he’s not playing all your players in the right position BUT build on the good performance on Saturday and build up some confidence.

I believe the Baggies are playing the same kind of football they did when they were last in the prem – the difference this time being a better manager who can change things around when they need to be changed and more confidence from the players. When you get a manager saying he doesn’t fear the drop you have to question his ability to motivate players!

But don’t panic yet – there’s a long way even to Christmas!

To be honest, I’m sick of reading and hearing the nonsense that Mick spouts week in, week out. It’s like listening to a politician. The reason we are in the position we are, is down to him and him alone. Buy a Porsche and drive a Mini – it will drive like a mini. He keeps picking Championship players (even playing them out of position), if he doesn’t want to play the signings he’s made then that tells you all you need to know regarding his judgement in the transfer market. “Having our bellies tickled, putting a shift in”. I’m sick of it, it’s like a broken record. Thanks for what you’ve done Mick , but you’ve exceded your sell by date. It’s time to move on.

As for us, it’s simple maths… we need say 38 points to stay up…agree? We will lose all 10 games against the “big 5″… not get much from all of the local derbies…Blues, Villa, West Brom and Stoke… so pleas etell me where we are to get another 32 points from… thats say 8 wins and 8 draws… from the remaining fixtures

Spot on 63. Doyle is becoming a £6.5 mill embarrassment. Virtually bottom, couldn’t score a goal if the opposition left the pitch and here is a typical muppet multimillion pound purchase who has not only failed to score this season (hence our lamentable position)but hasn’t even managed double figures in nearly 40 appearences.

The Reading management must be laughing up their armpits. Muppet has spent approximately £30 mill to have it either sitting on a bench or at home.

Where is “Job Done” Moxey and “Mission Accomplished” Morgan in all this? Meanwhile we are being humiliated by Tesco Rangers looking down on us from the Grand Circle while we are in the basement spitters.

Thanks Muppet and Clipboard – or as you say “Job Done”

I appreciate that it’s all a bit of a guessing game but to say we won’t get much from the local derbies to illustrate your point is a bit unfair (although I appreciate you’ve got recent history on your side).

For the 38 points, if you assume nothing from the big 6 (which included Liverpool and Tottenham), then that means 38 points from 26 games. Simply put, targetting an average of 2pts per home game against everyone else and 1 point from away games – and you’ve got 39 points. Anything from the big 6 is a bonus.

As of the weekend, this sees the league excluding the big 6 looking like this:

    West Brom 7
    Sunderland 5
    Blackpool 3
    Everton 2
    Bolton 2
    Villa 1
    Stoke 1
    Newcastle 0
    Blackburn 0
    Fulham 0
    Wigan 0
    Birmingham -1
    West Ham -3
    Wolves -5

Depressing reading really – so forget about the 3 points to 4th bottom as it stands at present. Only 3 teams are behind target, we’re the worst and, as it stands at the moment, 38 points (or what Brum are on target for) would actually get you relegated.

So obviously you believe that you are of a higher level of intelligence than the rest of us and we do not understand football.?
Yes Mcarthy dug us out of a hole, however he seems hell bent with his selection policy of putting us right back in it.
How did we get in such a big mess in the first place let me see know Building a new stand and not signing quality players, err what is Mr Morgan doing?.
Should not stability in the prem come before a new stadium.
Having followed the club since 1962 seeing many yoyo years throughout the sixties and seventies then yes i do understand the needs of stability however this needs to be attained by building a settled side first, bricks and mortar can follow.
As regards MM nobody does not thank him for granting us our dream of premiership football, but if he is not capable of sustaining it(and his record suggests otherwise)them in my opinion Mr Morgan has to protect this clubs interests and the financial implecations relegation brings with it.

Morning Malta my old friend. Lovely sunny day today? You seem to be picking an argument with the Butler by agreeing with him! If one penny that could be spent in the January window is saved for ground development then we are kidding oursleves about our current standing. Molineux is currently big enough at the (ridiculous) prices charged. I don’t believe there is any fan who wants to watch Championship football in a posh new ground. So perhaps we have found one thng we all agree on.

So, as pointed out by Noisy, it appears we agree on the stadium – Good stuff.

Re your points on McCarthy – I would, as per my above post and by Cornish Wolf earlier, state that we were in a very similar position last season and the man turned it around. Mouyokolo, Hunt, Van Damme have all been / are injured through nothing but bad luck – something we’ve had a healthy serving of this year.

I completely understand your desire for your club to be protected, but McCarthy got us up, and kept us up – so why should this bad run we’re in be the end for him ? We’ve had this same argument for the last 3 seasons running, and in each case McCarthy has come through – Im not saying he will this time, but if you sacked a manager every time you hit a bad patch……..

Nice to see that sometimes agreements can be reached on these sites. As you are a staunch supporter of MM i respect your views. As you so rightly point out we have good players returning from injury but will he play them?
The next two months will in my opinion determine as to whet MM should stay or go.
Miljas and Jones played well together on saturday, will he keep them in the team or bring Henry/Mancienne straight back?
Myolouko by all accounts has been ready for the last four games as we are currently conceding at virtually 2 goals per game will he shore up the defence or stick with his favourites. At the end of the day this site is for fans to air their feelings vent their anger etc,but come tonight/Saturday afternoon we will all have ONE COMMOM desire a Wolves victory.

Away at Leicester we made 11 changes, and still won 4-1. Competition for places is fierce, and I think we have exelent cover in most, if not all positions. Myhill, Ibanez, Cech, Dorrans, Reid, Barnes, Cox, Tchoyi, Miller to name a few. That, I think is the difference from Hull and Barnsley. Also the ability to get points from games, where we found our self going a goal or two down early on. ( 6 times ) Bad luck to you guys y´day.
