Matt Jarvis backs Wolves’ luck to turn
Monday 25th October 2010, 10:35AM BST.
Winger Matt Jarvis has insisted Wolves’ luck will turn if they repeat their performance at Chelsea.
Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge extended Wolves’ miserable run to eight league games without a win and left them marooned second bottom, three points from safety after Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Blackburn yesterday.
Wolves produced arguably their best performance of the season against the double winners.
In-form winger Jarvis sees plenty to be optimistic about, despite facing the teams in second, third and fourth in the next four games, starting with tomorrow’s Carling Cup trip to Manchester United.
He said: “We can take some confidence from it into the next few games. After Saturday’s performance people can see we’re not afraid of anyone.
“We played really well at Stamford Bridge and if we can keep playing like that in the next run of games I’m sure we’ll get something.
“No one gave us a hope beforehand and people looking at the result might think it was an easy win for Chelsea.
“Anyone who saw the match knew it wasn’t like that because we played really well and maybe deserved something out of it.
“We played really well, kept the ball well and created a lot of chances.”
Jarvis believes Wolves need to sharpen their cutting edge to stop the run of defeats.
He said: “Unfortunately for us we didn’t take any of our chances. We pressed them and kept possession, but just couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net.
“You make your own luck, but we did really well and maybe just needed something for a goal to go in and kick-start us.
“It was a good performance and we’re really disappointed we didn’t get anything from the game.
“But Chelsea are such a good team – they’re able to soak up pressure and then punish you at the other end.”
Jarvis was involved in the most intriguing battle of the match against England left-back Ashley Cole.
He said: “It was a good battle for me. He runs for fun – he keeps bombing on so I had to keep staying with him and try to make sure he went back the other way as well.”
