Mick McCarthy calls for patience

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has urged his critics to ‘judge us in December’ as fans become anxious at the club’s position.

Tomorrow’s trip to double winners Chelsea kicks off a daunting five-match spell against the current top four including Tuesday’s Carling Cup trip to Manchester United.

But McCarthy is already looking towards next month when he claims critics will be able to judge them more fairly.

He said: “People will look at these four games and have us down as getting no points from them, but I don’t subscribe to that.

“I see other teams around us in a similar situation, and if we’d had another two draws, we’d be talking about a vastly different start.

“There are plenty of games to go and at least after these four matches, they’re over and done with.

“Then we have a run of really important games – Bolton, Blackpool, Sunderland, Blackburn and Wigan.

“So let’s see how well we can do in these four and take that into those games.

“I’m of the glass half-full variety and I’ve never admitted defeat in my life. ”

McCarthy challenged his players to take on the underdog spirit tomorrow.

He said: “We’ll have to stop Chelsea,. If we do, you never know – we might nick something. Being the underdog can inspire you. If we can get an inspired performance and a slice of luck, who knows?”
Meanwhile, Stephen Hunt has a slight chance of appearing from the bench tomorrow. “I’m not ruling him out of the 18 but he’s got aches and pains — he’s not bang at it yet,” said the boss.
