Greg Halford’s race to join Pompey
Tuesday 19th October 2010, 9:30AM BST.
Wolves’ utility man Greg Halford is all set to join Championship club Portsmouth on a month’s loan – and could play at Millwall tonight.
The 25-year-old was originally due to sign last Friday after training with Pompey, but the move was held up by a delay with the club’s administrators.
However, Halford has gone back to the south coast this week to rejoin the squad, with Wolves manager Mick McCarthy happy to allow the out-of-favour player out on loan.
No deal can be rubber stamped until Pompey’s administrators give the go-ahead, but McCarthy is confident the deal will go through.
He said: “It fell through due to circumstances at Portsmouth, but he’s there now. The loan should happen. It’s for 28 days.
“It will give him some football as he’s hardly had any. He’s played some great stuff in the Championship.”
Pompey were today frantically trying to push the prospective emergency loan through so Halford can play at the New Den.
It must be registered with the Football League by the 4.45pm cut-off time, leaving just hours to seal the deal.
But manager Steve Cotterill is remaining upbeat that he will able to call on Halford tonight.
He said: “The hold-up is just about him being signed off, that’s all, but hopefully that will be done in time for tonight.
“Greg has trained with us since Friday, so hopefully he will be OK. I don’t want to elaborate.
“Obviously there are a lot of things going on at the moment in the background, so I don’t want to talk about that because it will look as if I am blaming somebody and I don’t really want to do that.
“Hopefully it will be sorted, though.”
