Bobby Gould slams Danny Murphy
Tuesday 12th October 2010, 11:00AM BST.
Former Wolves striker Bobby Gould today claimed Danny Murphy should ‘keep his trap shut’ over his criticism of the club.
Gould, now a hard-hitting media pundit, believes Murphy’s controversial comments on Wolves, Stoke and Blackburn being ‘so pumped up there are inevitably going to be problems’ were unfair and ill-judged.
Murphy has pulled out of a TV role at tonight’s England versus Montenegro Euro 2012 qualifier after his quotes stoked up the media firestorm on bad tackles.
And Gould, who had two prolific spells at Wolves in the 1970s, feels the Fulham captain would be better placed keeping his views to himself.
He said: “There’s a lot of bunkum being spoken by a few people at the moment and they should shut their traps and get on and do what they’re paid to do, which is play.
“If you’re the one who’s injured in a tackle, you have a right to voice an opinion. There are too many players getting blase at the moment and it’s nothing to do with them.
“They know from their own dressing room that no-one goes into game to injure another player.
“Danny Murphy is no shrinking violet either – he’s been booked 65 times in his career and been sent off three times.”
Wolves captain Karl Henry was sent off at Wigan for a reckless lunge on Jordi Gomez and Gould admitted players risk punishment if they are late.
He said: “Unfortunately if people go to ground, then they’ve got to be aware of the consequences.
“But what I hate is the rolling around – it shows the opposition you are weak.”
Gould also praised Wolves boss Mick McCarthy for refusing to respond to the criticism.
He said: “I think Mick is doing the right thing. He should just smile about it but not take it on board, which is his approach from a distance.
“I managed the club with the worst reputation in England – Wimbledon – and what you don’t do is allow it to upset you.”

At least we are in the national media news everyday even if it for all the wrong reasons!

Wow, what a surprise, the former manager of the most thugish team ever to disgrace the Premiership, and a hothead when he was playing, speaks up for the likes of Shawcross and Henry. The game will NEVER progress in this country if we follow this road. Spain won the World Cup with skill, not by breaking legs.

Shut up Riversider[NO..4].No one can condone tackles like we have seen lately. These sort of tackles unfortunately do happen occaisionally and must be erased somehow.Bobby Gould did a lot for the teams he was with years ago and does not need slating by the likes of you.How old are you?10/11.Boing Boin`s do take a lot more educating than most teams,or is it that you are now mouthy Murphy`s next door neighbour?

The day we all listen to what Bobby Gould got to say is the day football should wrap up

Get with the modern game Gouldie you are living in the 80′s!
Players coming up from the Championship into the Premiership are not of good enough quality to match the established premiership players and therefore they are late into tackles approx 75% of the time.
Danny Murphy was quite right in his statement and at no time did he say players purposely injure other professionals so get of his back and look at the big picture rather than keep your head stuck in the sand.

riversider= what a joke, no one had heard of karl henry till this season and he had been in our team 4 years, also no one called us dirty last year when we played exactly the same, just a reminder we did get a player with a broken leg against villa, or dosent that matter?? your a prat mate

This is all starting to get very tedious and undignified. Anyone want to place bets on who will leap to Danny Murphy’s defence and have a go at Bobby Gould? I’m laying a fiver on Robbie Savage.

Gould,
Who are you to pass judgement with a reputation like yours. Why should Murphy not speak up after all he plays football or haven’t you noticed. He could also be on the end of one of these assaults, that could finish his playing days. That is why you had to leave ALBION, you couldn’t manage in the way we are accustomed.
(4) Riverside, well said mate, Keep striving for skilful football. Maybe the cloggers should form a league of their own. When a manager requests his players to bring their pads to training, what are they practising, running, football skills or ball and man. I’ll leave that one for you to fathom.
Certainly managers inadvertently instil this type
of behaviour through their training methods. Frustration creeps in when the lesser skilled are out footballed. JtH.

Looked at the photograph of Jarvis, on an earlier blog. Looks like a young Ryan Giggs. Anyone agree?.

Hard hitting pundit? Don’t make me laugh. You’re a joke Gould and should go back to the dark ages where you belong. English football would get nowhere with people like you involved.

Coming from a man who is about as good as manager as Mick is, this is no surprise . Wolves are my club but I must admit we are. A Dirty side and that cus the clown in charge plays his useless favourites ie ward,Edwards ,mancieene,so cus we lack quality,Mick sends them out to be pumped up.
Such a shame cus should he play his best 11 of USA,van damme, craddock, moyokolo, zubar
Jarvis,Henry ,milijas,hunt
Fletcher (NOT ON THE WING ) Doyle
There wud be no need to be dirty.but cluless Mick can’t see what 22,000 ( sorry we are not Albion ) 28,000 other wolves fans do..
I for one will be singing for Martin oneil no matter what the result is Saturday .if you want to move this great club forward,I suggest you all follow suit.. Come wolves fans,Martin is looking for a job, let’s not let this chance pass us by.
