Mick McCarthy’s urge to stop the rot

Manager Mick McCarthy has urged Wolves to stop the rot now and warned them of another physical battle looming at Wigan.

Wolves go to the DW Stadium for another screen test on Saturday lunch-time aiming to end a run of three successive defeats, having shipped five late goals and led in two of them.

After Wigan and the visit of West Ham following the international break, Wolves face champions Chelsea, moneybags Manchester City, Manchester United twice and Arsenal in a daunting run of fixtures.

With that in mind, McCarthy insisted points are a must from their next two outings.

He said: “Having had three games without anything, we need to get some points at Wigan and against West Ham at home.

“I watched Wigan at Birmingham on Saturday and they’re a different team to last season.

“Away from home they’re a bit more solid and workmanlike and not playing as much expansive football.

“They can still play good football but they’ve got a tougher side to them and a more steely edge.”

McCarthy believes the next two matches were always going to be bigger in the battle to beat the drop because the opposition are expected to be in the ‘same pot.’

He said: “There’s enough on the game anyway having lost three on the bounce, but Wigan and West Ham are teams we need to get results against.

“We should have had some anyway in the last three games despite the quality of the opposition, but Wigan is a bigger game for us.

“They are in the mix with us and in the same pot of teams wanting to take points off each other.”

Wolves failed to cope with Wigan dangermen Hugo Rodallega and Charles N’Zogbia in the Latics’ 2-1 win at Molineux in January and McCarthy believes the pair are worth their touted £20million valuations.

He said: “Their supposed fees are probably right, because I think they are at that level.”
