David Edwards ready to fill his boots
Thursday 30th September 2010, 5:00PM BST.
Wolves midfielder David Edwards has been tipped to fill the gap left by the injured Adlene Guedioura.
Guedioura is out for up to six months with a broken leg sustained against Villa.
The Algeria international had replaced Edwards in the game, as the Welsh midfielder tired on his first start of the season last weekend.
Both are hard-running and are similar in style, so boss Mick McCarthy believes Edwards offers the same threat as the former Charleroi powerhouse.
The manager said: “Both he and ‘Addy’ have got a goal in them.
“Dave has that happy knack of arriving in the box which helped get our goal. I think he was given it at the time – it wasn’t his but we’ll give him the assist.
“But I thought Dave did really well and had a good game. He’s better when he plays through the middle, but unfortunately we’ve had a few injury problems and he had to play wide.
“He gives us plenty of drive, legs and athleticism. He’s been terrific for us. He’s been injured and even up until last week he came back out training and rocked his ankle and missed three days. So it’s good to have him fit again.
“He was a bit stiff on Monday morning but he’ll be fine.”
Edwards is again expected to occupy a wide right role at Wigan on Saturday to help Kevin Foley shackle the threat of Charles N’Zogbia, Wigan’s chief threat, along with striker Hugo Rodellaga.
But, whatever danger they face, McCarthy is convinced Wolves’ fortunes will turn soon given the strength of the squad and recent performances.
He said: “If we’d been murdered in the games and been bashed and outplayed then there could justifiably be some concerns.
“But there isn’t any need based on the performances we’ve put in. We’ve played very well.
“We’ve got to get results and I understand that more than anybody. What reassures me is we got on top at Everton and we outplayed Villa in the second-half.
“If we can react like that having been outplayed ourselves, it shows we’ve got a great group of lads – but perhaps some luck wouldn’t go amiss.”
