Wolves boss Mick McCarthy refuses to panic
Wednesday 29th September 2010, 11:30AM BST.
Confident Mick McCarthy today told Wolves fans there’s no panic at Molineux, despite their poor run.
Wolves go to Wigan on Saturday aiming to end a run of three successive defeats in the Premier League.
But having suffered bad luck in recent games, McCarthy is convinced his team’s fortunes will change soon.
“There’s no need to panic,” said the boss.
“We got to this situation last season when we lost to Birmingham and there was a real panic about it.
“If we’d been murdered in the games and been bashed and outplayed then there could justifiably be some concerns. But there isn’t any need based on the performances we’ve put in.
“We’ve got to get results and I understand that more than anybody.
“But we’ve played very well.”
McCarthy’s confidence stems from the reassurance he’s been given by his side’s performances.
“What reassures me is we got outplayed at Everton but Marcus Hahnemann only made one save and in the second half we got on top,” he said.
“Villa were better than us in the first half but certainly not as much as we outplayed them in the second half.
“If we can react like that having been outplayed, it shows we’ve got a great group of lads — but perhaps some luck wouldn’t go amiss.”
McCarthy is aware just how fickle fate can be, however.
“After 87 minutes on Sunday everybody was thrilled and we were a good side,” he said. “After 95 minutes some fans thought we’re going down.
“That sort of thing happens and I understand it, but it’s not the case.”
Having sat through the DVD of the Villa defeat, McCarthy is hoping to have found the answers to stop Emile Heskey’s winner.
“I picked the bones out with the lads on Monday about what I think we could have done better to stop it,” he said.
“I don’t take any pleasure out of it but it really was a magnificent header.”

What a strange two weeks it has been since our last game. I haven’t looked over my neighbour’s fence with as much interest since Pamela Anderson moved in next door and regularly used her trampoline, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.

Berra won practically every header against Hesky until the 87th minute, but, watching the replays Elokobi left Hesky a clear run at Warnock’s cross and should have alive to the situation and done a lot better. I would imagine MM has picked up on that.
Also, Foley wasn’t having the best of games, but, would he have done better with the match winning Villa attack than Stearman did ? Probably yes.
Van Damme situation is not what we need. He needs to bring his family over.
We need morale boosting points from the next two games to take us into our most difficult run of fixtures this side of Christmas.

Yes Mick I agree with you were not good first half. Second half we played alot better and managed to get the equaliser from Matty.
I cannot understand why fans are panicking so early on in the season, but I do think that something has to be done about these last minute goals that we are having against us and I am 100% sure that you Mick will do something about.
Good Luck on Saturday I am sure we can get a result

Lets just hope we gets some much needed points from our next two games as weve got, chelsea, man city, man utd, and arsenal as the 4 games after that, and we will struggle for points then. Saying that after those 4 games, we have got a run of 7 games that we could easily get wins from.

We need to put a side out that is balanced – square pegs in round holes do not work as in Ward and his tackles at left back. If you look at which side he pushes the winger to close him down he shows him the door to cross the ball!
Get the side settled down – where is Zubar? Dave Edwards is not a right sided midfielder! why have we not got Miljash working down the wide right to try him and pusg Jarvo over to the right?
An observation and one I would try – Miljash can unlock defences and we have got to be more creative at some point.

Lived for 5 years in France and had to come home cos of wife being homesick. I know what he must be going through and now is the time for the club to put its arm round him and give the support he needs always remember it was us that asked him to come and play for our great team so help him now.

If we don’t get six points against Wigan and West Ham, or 4 at the very least, then we need to panic, because the four games after that don’t look like a points harvest…

What concerns me is that we havn’t played well all season and we are now dropping points against the teams that we picked up points from last season.
First half on Saturday was dire from an attacking point, so slow and ponderous, were we hoping Villa would just get bored into submission?
Lets be honest we have been poor all season, time MM started playing some of his signings and asap, the current starting 11 whilst certainly put in the effort are simply not good enough at this level.
On present form I would drop Hahnemann, Berra, Foley, Ward, Jones, Edwards and Henry.
Its all very good the players coming out with the same drivel every week such as ” we will learn from our mistakes, its time to kick on, we have played well etc ” but when are we going to see some real desire to win games?
Come on MM stand up and start playing some of our recent signings before its too late.

when will mm start playing players in the right positions, we have needed a decent left back for ages and when we finally have one he doesn’t play him there. losing faith with mm, next two games are huge!!!!

5. Agreed.
We need to go to Wigan with an attacking 4-5-1 and drop some our Championship players and bring in our better players.
After the West Ham game we need to play a stubborn 4-5-1 with two holding midfielders and Milijas as the out-let and on the flanks.
V Wigan:
Hahnemann
Zubar
Craddock
Mouyokolo
Van Damme
Henry
Fletcher
Milijas
Mancienne
Jarvis
Doyler

Played very well?
Not putting 2 passes together is playing well is it?
We are playing championship players in the Premier League.
Have all the new signings been sent to Butlins for the season?
You reap what you sow.

Only two points:
1: There is never a need to panic. Its a pretty dumb thing to say. As Panic is defined as “a sudden overwhelming fear, with or without cause, that produces hysterical or irrational behavior, and that often spreads quickly through a group of persons or animals.”.
there can not be a need for hysterical or irrational behaviour.
2: The E&S missed the best headline of the week. Surely, Its Par for the Course – would be so much better than, Its Part of the COurse!!! On the golfing trip article

Having gone to all the league games so far this season (home and away) I would tend to agree with McCarthy’s view.
I don’t think there is too much wrong with the players that are being selected. However in my opinion, the system should revert back to earlier this year (i.e. 4-5-1).
We need Mancienne to play just in front of the back four and Fletcher to play wide right.

How can we not worry when he picks players who are not premiership quality. He bought in players and non of them play. He stated that we had problems last season starting at B’ham, how appropriate because WARD who he states is a good player was responsible for the 2 goals they scored.
The last 5 mins have been crucial and guess what they have all come down the left wing afterhe sub FOLEY or moved him into mid-field.
PS don’t forget WARD was responsible for 2 of the last minute goals.

Well Mick as you know playing pretty football
doesn’t put points on the board we need to get back to the same mentality as the first two games we need to get stuck in and tell them what were about, we need two wins before we play the big four and lets hope afew teams around us have off days. utw

SO, for Wigan it´ll be the same team as last week then will it? And we are to believe that after watching the game on DVD Wardy, Edwards and the usual championship players will have found the key to their failings and all will be well? Even if we beat Wigan isn´t it about time we set our sights a little higher. These teams should be par for the course wins, it´s the top ten sides we should be aiming to emulate.

9 Laughing, apart from Zubes being injured (so Foley has to play), your team is spot on.
But you and I both know Mick will play:-
George (who played well against Vile) for JVD
Berra for Mouyo
Jones for Mili
At the moment…..
Because soon he’ll be forced to play make those changes when, indeed he does start to panic.
(BTW by no need to panic, Mick really means “I aint going to make changes”)

Morgan is right to have a go at the press, the last thing we need is for their approach to us have an effect on the way we play..i Am sorry. Wenger MU, Arsenull, and all the other rich boys, but we don’t have Arshavin, Drogba, and the rest..so your players are going to get tackled hard if they turn and run faster than ours…Looking at what happened to Blackpool during last weekend and their punishments, the tag of plucky tangerines will soon disappear to be replaced with one that has a go..if your face don’t fit…thats the message from the FA…then FO back to the championship…

Mr Morgan, stop moaning and get a manager in who can play proper football and get the team up the league. at least its in your hands.

Panic?Mick we have taken 5 points from a possible 18 and you wonder why fans are unhappy. You are picking your championship mates and hoping that they will adjust to the premiereship.Mick they won`t.You are playing players out of position and hope they will come good.Mick ,they won`t.Van Damme, either get his family over here or send him back to Belgium. If he can`t settle he won`t do any good although he is supposed to be a proffessional and with his experience should have known what he was letting himself in for when he signed.McCarthy is holding out hoping for kites and Hunt to return and he thinks everything will be ok.Cuckoo land here we come.mr.Morgan,I keep saying this but Martin O`Niell is out of work,do I need to say more?
What is that McCarthy can’t see that the supporters, the pundits and even gods dog can see? It is painfully obvious that whilst good championship players they might be, premier league they ain’t and I include the likes of the Yank in goal, Fletcher, Berra, Mancienne in fact apart from Doyle (and he had a stinker on Saturday)and up to a point Jarvis. No one fits the bill really.

we wont panic if you learn to pick the team on merit and not your favorites learn about tactics and how to make a substitution to affect the game in a positive manner, not a centre half for a right back

No need to panic hey Mick? Our best left back jvd want to go home probably cus your playing a 2 division striker in his place at left back .
You loan a player in maniceene who is a centre back and you play in him midfield where he is USELESS .
You play the most natural goalscorer we have in fletcher on the wing.
You play Dave Edwards a 2nd division player again, right wing. Our best midfield who couldnt get. Game is out for 6 months .
No matter how bad ward, jones and Berra play, you pick them next match.
You sign Marcus bent (yet let big Chris go )
We have 5 points and lose the last 3 games
We can’t defend after 70 mins.
And good old Mick says don’t worry
Ok Mick we won’t,least there more Saturday game in the.championship to look forward to hey Mick ..
Steveo get you money out pal and get a proper manager in Martin oneil on NOW

RE Van Damme, Wolves are to foreign signings are what the Titanic is to an iceberg.Three million Euros, yet more ‘smart money’ Mr Moxey. You would have thought, before we signed him ,somebody might have asked could such a bulky man who is slow on the turn make it as a full back in the Prem.Never mind missing his mussels.
Its fine for MM saying not to panic but having spent the best part of 18mill in the transfer window and rapidly heading towards the bottom of the table we are still playing more or less a Championship side due to his riduculous favouritism. If I was Morgan having spent that kind of money I would be kicking McCarthys door down.

MM sacked by the time the tinsles out of the box!!!NOT A CLUE IN THIS LEAUGE!!!

4 points needed at least from the next two as have 4 massive games therafter!!!!!

The trouble is if the opposition stop Jarvis theres no one else to create a killer pass for the front two.we haven’t got any good attacking full backs.and Sunday we didn’t ave one player on the bench to come on and create something. Pls sort it out mm

Mick McCarthy, I’d be panicking if I were you, the smart monies on you out by mid-November and O’Neil in by the Blackpool game, a source at Redrow has hinted meetings have been arranged ( a PA ), I got the nod yesterday and placed a bet of £100 @ 40-1; The fact is he needs to be on at least 25 points after 19 games, the thinking is lose at Wigan and then no wins in the next 4 and it’s curtains; Should have gone with a £1m payoff in the summer, too much tat brought and no football brain, huff, puff and kick aint good enough for the second season!!!!

mick get it wrong next 2 games think your number will be up dont think he goodenough for us spent 18 to 19 million this season and we worse than last season !!!

11 – if you read these message boards on Sunday you would know that they fitted your definition of panic well – certainly scored highly on the irrational scale.
I am not a big Berra fan, but were any of you calling for Mouyokolo at the League Cup game? He looked well off the pace to me that night.
BTW I have kept an eye on the blame game and can report that there is one player left from Sunday who no ‘fan’ has called to be dropped. Well done Matt Jarvis!

at this time my thoughts go out to guedioura he was just getting his game together but as for the villa game the ref bottled it when it came to a second booking for warnocks tackle from behind on doyle that changed the game i thought a foul like warranted a booking so much for premiership refs

29 p knowles, well if you came back that would solve the problem. If only.

31wolf 3069,do not forget Mick McCarthy has earned our football club at least £110million REPEAT ONE HUNDRED AND TEN MILLION QUID,by getting us to the Prem and keeping us there for at least 2 seasons.£30million plus last season.minimum £33million this season and even if we go down £48million in parachute money.Footballers needed not bricks.

We really need to draw a line under this bad patch and on Saturday as usual we will right behind the boys and get our first away win.
I love Big Mick for what he has done but changes are needed after 3 straight defeats. Milijas, Mancienne, Van Damme in, shame Zubar is still out.
WE ARE WOLVES.

I think there are a posts on here without facing the facts.
Zubar – not fit or he would be in the squad
Miljas- not match fit- he struggled in the notts county game and needs more time.
Van damme- not match fit, has had to come on or off as sub
Mayouko – not match fit
Mijanji Bia – not ready for a first team start.
The only puzzle for me is why edwards has got a start ahead of guedoura who had been quite playing well before his injury.
My team would be 442 as i think MM will stick with it
USA
foley- no one else fit- NOT Stearman
berra
craddock
elokobi
henry
jones or mancienne
jarvis
doyle or fletch

There is no doubt, McCarthy’s purchasing qualities are abysmal. Think of the dummies he has brought in over the years.
Castillo, Surman, Halford, The Hoff and others. All that money spent on garbage with nothing to show for it.
Let me stir up a hornet’s nest with another observation. While we are all talking about McCarthy’s favourites, what about the fan’s favourite – Doyle? This wondrous hitman cost £6.5 million and over 30 league games later is yet to get his goal tally into double figures.
The Hoff made a shrewed observation when he remarked that his goal tally wasn’t exactly awe- inspiring for the money he cost. Other fans have also commented on this.
The last three games have shown up the team as error prone bordering on the incompetent. While the Tesco Rangers can put three past one of the top Premiership team on their own pitch, we are losing three times on the run in the last 10 minutes of the game. I hope they don’t come to Molineux and do what they did to Arsenal.
At this level, if things don’t improve rapidly, there is only one way our team is going.
