Steve Morgan on the attack over ‘dirty’ Wolves

Wolves chairman Steve Morgan has angrily hit out at the media portrayal of his side in the wake of Adlene Guedioura’s broken leg.

Morgan used the platform of the TV cameras at the club’s annual golf day at his De Vere Carden Park complex yesterday to launch an outburst against the national tide of criticism and labelled Steve Sidwell’s tackle on the Algeria international as “vicious”.

Wolves have been accused of being ‘dirty’ after seven of Mick McCarthy’s players were booked against Newcastle and Fulham, triggering a £75,000 FA fine.

“Anyone who has watched Wolves over the years and any Mick McCarthy team knows we are competitive but we’re not a dirty team at all and it hurts me to see us labelled as one,” said Morgan.

“One of our lads had his leg broken on Sunday in what I thought was a vicious tackle and absolutely nothing has been said about it in the press.

“When the same thing happened at Fulham for what was a perfectly fair tackle by Karl Henry, he won the ball and yet Karl was absolutely pilloried for it.

“It’s really unfair the way we’ve been singled out.”

Morgan’s remarks are however at odds with manager Mick McCarthy, who refused to blame Sidwell for the challenge.

“Sidwell didn’t go to hurt Adlene,” said the boss.

“He went to get the ball but he got there late and didn’t get anything on it.

“I’m not going to bleat at other teams’ players because the game was played in a good spirit.

“There weren’t any nasty tackles.”

Ironically, the media firestorm was stirred up by Guedioura’s challenge on Everton’s Johnny Heitinga in the build-up to Wolves’ equaliser at Goodison Park in the 1-1 draw before the Newcastle game, where seven Wolves tackles on Joey Barton were replayed in a montage on ‘Match of the Day’.

What a strange two weeks it has been since our last game. I haven’t looked over my neighbour’s fence with as much interest since Pamela Anderson moved in next door and regularly used her trampoline, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.
