Wolves send off Matt Murray
Monday 27th September 2010, 10:30AM BST.
Retired Wolves goalkeeper Matt Murray was given a send-off as fans and former players – including Robbie Keane – paid tribute to him at the game against Villa.
The 29-year-old, who retired last month after failing to recover from a ruptured patella tendon in his right knee, was paraded on the Molineux pitch yesterday at half-time with his daughter Taliya.
But in a surprise to the giant goalkeeper, there were guest appearances from his former Wolves team-mates Keane, Rob Edwards, Lee Naylor and Joleon Lescott.
Murray, who was applauded by Wolves and Villa fans alike, thanked the crowd for their support.
He said: “It was a massive decision for me to make, but the support I have received since the day I announced it has been superb and I thank the board, management, players and supporters.
“Wolves has been a massive part of my life for 20 years and I’m sure it will continue to be.
“Nothing will replace the buzz of playing in front of a full Molineux and I have many great memories – the play-off final at Cardiff, beating Newcastle in the FA Cup, and, of course, beating the Baggies 1-0.
“It’s been an honour to play for you for me and my family.”
