Mick McCarthy hits out at referee

Monday 27th September 2010, 11:30AM BST.

Angry Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has condemned the decision not to send Stephen Warnock off in the derby defeat to Villa.

Left-back Warnock crossed for Emile Heskey’s late winner at Molineux but only after his 48th minute lunge on Kevin Doyle went unpunished when he had already been booked by referee Mark Halsey, as Wolves crashed to their third successive Premier League defeat.

McCarthy said: “I’m not convinced the lad who crossed it should have been on the pitch.

“We were on the break and Doyle was away with Steven Fletcher on the outside of him. It was a real attacking opportunity for us.

“The fourth official said it was different to Jody Craddock’s tackle on the halfway line a bit later which he was booked for but I think if it was a foul, it should have been a booking.

“Had Warnock not been booked already I think he would have been.

“I feel aggrieved because I remember how soft Christophe Berra’s two bookings were at Fulham and that’s why it sticks in the craw that he crossed it for the winner.”

Wolves have already collected 18 bookings this season and McCarthy believes the handling of Halsey – who was at Molineux for the first time since being treated for cancer – was the latest harsh treatment his team have been dealt in 2010-11.

The manager said: “I think we’ve been punished harshly for some of our tackles this season.

“I didn’t speak to the referee about the Warnock incident. I welcomed him back – it’s good to see him back in the game – but I didn’t talk to him about it.”

But Doyle, clattered by Warnock’s challenge, refused to condemn Halsey or the Villa player.

The Wolves striker said: “I didn’t know at the time he’d already been booked. I don’t go to the referees looking to get someone booked.

“I’m not going to blame that for losing the game.”
