A broken leg for Adlene Guedioura
Monday 27th September 2010, 12:00PM BST.
Wolves were today reeling from a major blow after midfielder Adlene Guedioura broke his leg.
The Algeria international was stretchered off after Steve Sidwell’s ugly tackle in the 2-1 defeat against Villa yesterday.
X-Rays revealed a fractured tibia which will keep the midfielder out for between four and six months.
Manager Mick McCarthy said: “It’s desperately disappointing news both for Adlene and the club.
“Everyone wishes him all the best in his recovery.”
Guedioura underwent further assessment earlier today when the injury was confirmed.
Steve Kemp, head of Wolves’ medical department, said: “It’s going to be a lengthy absence but on the plus side the consultant has told us it’s an uncomplicated fracture. In these situations that’s as good as it gets.
“Adlene will be in a full leg non-weight bearing cast for four weeks before progressing to a partial weight bearing-cast after that.”
Guedioura, who became a £2million permanent signing in the summer, has impressed since arriving on loan from RSC Charleroi in January.
The 24-year-old has started both Carling Cup victories while coming off the bench in four of the six Premier League fixtures played so far, in a total of 20 senior appearances for Wolves since joining.
He’s also become a fans’ favourite for his long-range shooting, which resulted in goals in the wins against Burnley away and Sunderland at home last season.
Sidwell was booked for the late challenge, which was condemned by McCarthy.
The manager said: “It was a poor tackle.”
McCarthy also reflected on another harsh outcome for his team, who slumped to their third successive defeat despite being the better side in the second-half.
He said: “It was a terrific second-half performance up until they got a really good goal.
“They battered us in the first-half and were all over us. We were dire.
“I elected to go 4-4-2 as we were at home and wanted to take the game to them but they were better than us.
“We changed it in the second-half and we were far better.”

and WE are the “dirty” team of the midlands, yeah right. was at the game yesterday, Warnock was more than lucky to stay on the pitch and if our Karl Henry had made THAT tackle, that Sidwell made on Guedioura then it would have been straight red. Totally biased refereeing. Also Ashley Young- a player that I used to like, until he has picked up this bad attitude that he carried round all day y’day, nothing but constant dissent all afternoon but yet no card!?! HE went to the ground as often as the wind changed, simulation of foul play is WORSE than foul play IMO. RANT OVER. UTW. lets get a result against wigan next week!!!!
This is a huge blow to the squad. :(
Report abuse
At least this has given MM a good reason not to play him now, hope that doesn’t mean we’re stuck with edwards
Report abuse
This is sad news news for both Gudioura and the Wolves. Effectively his season is over.
The referee had a poor game allround. Both Warnock and Sidwell should have been sent off.
This is a real shame as he should have been playing from the start – it leaves us very lightweight in the middle of the park with Edwards having a shocker and Mancienne being a midfielder.
Championship defence and midfield yesterday – simply not good enough based upon the money spent. Ward was shocking, Foley caught asleep for the first goal, Berra nowhere near Heskey for the second.
Manager has to go for me – a relatively easy start and below a point a game already.
Bob wolf, we could do without negative fans like you, why dont you get behind your team instead of slag them off all the time.
Agree with No1.
it was a shocking challenge and far worse than any tackle our so called hatchet men have done all season.
also i agree that Ashley Young was a disgrace, his constant bleating to the ref all game really wound me up, then he would go to ground with teh slightest touch. also he was constantly backing into our players. i used to like Young as a player but that went out of teh window in those 90 minutes.
He is just a cheat, my villa mate said he was being “clever” in his play. i called in down right cheating.
agree with the fletchers left foot – imagine if any of our players had made that tackle, nothing we can do bout it now but warnock shouldnt even been still on the pitch to put the cross in for heskeys goal….GRRRRRR
need 6 points from next 6 now!
Such bad luck, Adlene….you were playing well and always seem to be an inspiration to the team. Wolves….and the fans….will miss you over the next months…..hope the recovery is speedy. Remember, you’ve got the fans’ support !
I feel so sorry for the lad. Not utilised by Mick and now out for 6 months. One of the only players we have who wants to get forward and can pass the ball. So where were the dozen repeats of Sidwell’s tackle on match of the day? Rubbish refereeing.
Our tackles have been tame since all the fuss apart from George who gets stuck in. Mick you need to have a major think about why we are hoofing the ball all the time. Can’t you see we haven’t got forwards who play like that. It just comes straight back. Berra can’t play a short ball to save his life.
Somebody please tell us when any of our new signings and Zubar are going to get on the pitch.
Very sad news, i hope everything goes well with your rehab AG. Berra got sent of for 2 yellow cards both for simply ‘pulling a shirt’. Yet Warnock and Sidwell stay on the pitch, for dangerous tackles, its the inconsitency of Ref’s that wind managers, players, and fans up alike, how did neither player get a RED card?. But ive said on here before its ‘ALWAYS’ our good players who get long term injuries, never the likes of the Ward’s,Halford’s is it?. Players who we wouldn’t miss, who in fact would strengthen the team in their absence?. UTW
Report abuse
Gutted. Get well soon Adlene…
Bet the tackle won’t get mentioned on Football Focus, dirty Wolves? You’re having a laugh.
This is bad news. Guediora looked a much better player than Edwards when he came on. Hope he is back to full fitness soon.
to comment on the first post on this article, I have to agree, and MM picked up on this as well in his post-match interview. Warnock was rightly booked for his first challenge (that could so easily have been red). He then committed a further 4 fouls (one of them should have been a yellow) without further sanction. He shouldn’t have been on the pitch to deliver the cross that Heskey scored from (although we should have defended better anyway!).
Another Villa player committed a cynical foul (holding back)of a Wolves player and conceded a free kick in the same area of the pitch Berra was penalised (and received his first yellow card) against Fulham. The Villa player was not cautioned.
Where is the consistency in refereeing? We seem to be unfairly penalised week in, week out. Are the match of they day pundits going to highlight this unfair treatment? I doubt it!
Agreed, if henry would have made that tackle they’d be going mad about it on every radio station in the land. This league makes me sick

Very bad news for the lad and for the Wolves. I’m sure I speak for most baggies fans when I wish him a speedy recovery and a quick return to action.

Big blow for the wolves and more importantly the lad.
hope he has a speedy recovery and gets back playing soon

Maybe, just maybe, the bookies who had us down for one of the favourites for relegation at the start of the season won’t be far wrong………..

9, Cullis Dome… Iam not sure who your speaking to but Adlene is not reading this, all you needed with that comment was a violin and a few tears, he would have never got picked for the 1st 11 with mick in charge anyway so just gives him an excuse not to play him now

Our best midfielder.
Strong in a tackle, keen to shoot, makes things happen.

Let’s get things straight here. Guedioura didn’t break his leg…that animal Steve Sidwell broke Guediouras leg. The tackle was horrendous – and where’s all the media clamour about dirty Villa ? had that been the other way round we would have been crucified in the press and on telly. The tackle deserved a straight red and it showed up how much inconsistency there is in refereeing. There was Sidwells’ tackle – a straight red and then Warnock’s two tackles for which he only picked up one yellow. Berra commits two relatively minor offences against Fulham and gets his marching orders. Where is the justice ?
Very disappointed for the lad. The tackle was really poor. Adlene does seem to show great promise as he brings energy and drive to the midfield but gets very limited playing time. MM does not seem to want to give Milijas any real time in a game that matters and, having endured some pretty average play by Jones, Edwards and Henry on Saturday, one wonders where and when we will see any creativity in the midfield?
Not looking good for the Wolves at the moment. Hard graft and work rate only get you so far in this division that much is clear.
What a shame after beeing on the field for 10 minutes, he should have been on from the start.
Danny Batth should be given a chance, he’s a good strong defender, something we need right now.
This is a major blow.
Both to the lad & the team.
The tackle wasn’t the best but there was no malice in it & it wasn’t a red card.
Another concern was the below par performances yesterday of so many of our players, for me there was only Hanneman, Craddock, Henry & Doyle who were up to level we have come to expect.
The rest were average at best, with the slight exception of Jarvis who was starved of the ball for too long, especially in the first half.
We played our best football for a 20 min period prior to us scoring, we then get the goal & for some reason, instead of kicking on & winning the game, we stopped playing & seem ed to be happy to settle for a draw, not good!!!
Also what does a player have to do to get sent off against us, Warnock should have gone no question!!!
The refferee’s in this poncy league are doing my head in, that’s now one certain sending off & 2 absolute nailed on penalties in 6 games that we have been denied.
And people have the nerve to moan about us????
I was suffering with Manflu so couldnt make the game, but watched on Sky.
3 Points to make – (may take the team Christmas, but i will do here)
1: You heard the leg crack in real time when the tackle was made.
Says alot about our physio team that i tried to get him to run it off. Who is that clown?
2: I left the flask at home, nobody else take one?
3: I hope MIck is hinting at a change back to our much preferred formation of 4-5-1. And htose that say it is boring, look at the table.

Did anyone else notice the Villa players deliberatley smacking the ball into the crowd before kick off when they were having shots? Disgraceful!! If one of those balls had hit a young child they would have been seriously hurt.

Saw the game on the box yesterday and could not believe the terrible passing from Elokobi, he gave it to villa players 3 times in a row in the second half. And if Fletcher plays any more games like yesterdays (particularly when we are at home) then bring back SEB is all I can say. Shame about the lads broken leg, and yes Sidwell and Warnock should have both been sent off. If it was against the Arsenals, Chelsea’s and Man U’s I,m sure they would have gone. I’ve also noticed that despite a good 3 or 4 shouts for penalties this season the refs have not awarded us a single one!!

Whats all this sack the physio rubbish, the crowd close to the tackle may of heard the crack but the physio was the other side of the pitch. he just went through normal procedure.

I blame McCarthy for bringing him on too late instead of early so could ease himself in the game. It’s too much for him to do and should have been on from the start. Ward should never play for Wolves again too, stop playing your favourites Mick as will be your downfall and ours..
Good luck son your our bes player..

Gudioura,
Sorry about your misfortune. Sidwell should be find and suspended for as long as you are unable to play through this injury. These over the top tackles have no place in football, nor actions that are likely to cause them. Speedy recovery From a Baggy.

Well said Bob Wolf totally agree. As for MM well at least he wil now have a genuine reason for not selecting him. Unfortunately, unless he changes tactics and particularly the defence I am afraid we will continue to lose, simple! At the moment we look like an ordinary championship side at the most. Hoping things will turn around soon, but looking doubtful to put it mildy.

Reluctantly congratulating us for being 3-0 up at the time.
Pretty sure if I’d have been watching a match I wouldn’t be texting anyone.
Just my thoughts on your query.
Unfortunately I did try and check it out but couldn’t go back far enough.
Anyway all the best for the rest of the season, except for two games obviously.

Villa fan in peace. A cracking game of footie and you were unlucky not to get a point. I too am sorry about the Sidwell tackle but I don’t believe it was malicious, he’s just not very good. Remember he gave away the penalty at your place last year for yet another mis-timed challenge. And I also agree with the comments about Ashley Young. He has tremendous skill and pace but unfortunately a mouth to match – he will get sent off one day for dissent. A super goal to win the match though.
Good luck for the rest of the season, want to see all the West Midlands team in the top half of the league.

A shame for Guedioura, poor guy. At least (thanks to MM), he’s not an essential figure in the team. Not that big of a loss. If Doyle or Jarvis break a leg…!!
I have to agree with Crazy Bob : Edwards, Ward and Foley are terrible. And I have zero confidence in Berra.

Very Sad news indeed as he was our main threat in the centre of Midfield!!
I see the Micks been moaning about the refereeing but come on Mick Villa were there for the taking yesterday, and your creativity to win the game yesterday showed with your replacement of Foley!!!!!!!!
Villa were poor yesterday with only Downing and Young look any threat and we looked as uncreative as ever.
I cant believe some of the comments on here about Fletcher!! the only time our forward get a ball ahead of them is when it comes from Jarvis, all the other time they have to come searching and inevitably get it with their backs to goal.
Does anyone know the current status on:-
Hunt
Zubar
Mylouko
Van Dam
Perhaps its time for Mick to put his trust in miljas and accept the fact that he makes play and doesnt break it down. Anyone who saw Molby spread out the ball in his later years would understand what I mean.
I believe that there are again worse teams than us in this league and we can easily survive. That depends on whether Mick is brave enough to play the best creative 11 that we have.
I believe we can beat both Wigan and West Ham but if we dont theres a Manager out of work about 15 miles away that Morgan you would do well to have a chat with.

I must get to specksavers,I was in the North bank yesterday, come home and watched the full recording on Sky,and sorry Mick I cant see where Villa battered us,I saw Downing come from behind Foley and score a good goal, and I saw Heskey leap four foot in the air and score a brilliant goal, while Berra tried to grab hold of him,I saw two of our lads go off injured, one with a broken leg,and never got a mention on the box,and we all know iff those tackles had been by Wolves players, the papers would have been full of it this morning..And I saw Ashley Young for ninety minuets, arms up backing into our players, falling over at the slightest touch, and kissing the reffs bottom..No Mick we didnt get battered yesterday, but we got beat again and got nothing from the game,,during training this week just try letting players play in their propper positions,,and let them all do extra shooting practice, tell them they can shoot from twenty or thirty yards, they dont have to be scared or try to walk the ball in.

hunt will be fit to play on the 16th against west ham.
as for this tackle it was totally disgusting and if sidwell was a foot taller would still have got nowhere near the ball. as a footballer you know if you can get the ball or not and that was a 100% not getting it.
mark halsey bottled the red card on warnock.young should have been booked for simulation as he was doing it whenever he could.
i feel the difference between this season and last season is a simple fact of pressing and closing down. last season we wouldn’t allow teams to play footy and this season we’re letting them play their game and attack us. we need to close down and put our foot in more.
as for villa, i think there worried that they will soon become the lower placed local team as WOLVES and (hate to say it but..) baggies are going to overtake them.
UP THE WOLVES…

Im not normally a critic of MM but after walking away with nothing but effort again i am starting to get a little fed up with playing the same team as we was two years ago in the championship with one exception, when will we start to believe in keeping faith with players who were purchased solely to attack these teams .Loads of money spent only to see them sit on the bench and god knows why he didnt play Bent against his rivals im sure he would have wanted to proove a point or two .I think the majority of people want to see these signings play on a regular basis so mick take notice the warning signs are there for you to see.

dont suppose there will radio phone in and national press coverage of our player getting his leg broke by a “clumsy” tackle can you imagine the fuss there would of been had it been a tackle by our player? and i have no doubt if the two tackles by warnock were by a wolves player he would of been sent off, after one and a bit seasons i totally p—-d off with the premier league and its blatant favouritism, just look at the decisions we are getting or not as the case may be its a joke.seem to be leaving every game now angry at not getting a fair crack from refs, where are the assessors? isnt it time now refs are paid a lot of money that they can be interviwed after a match and made to explain decisions.

Foley,Craddock,Berra and Ward are the worst back four to ever play in the Premier League. Act now or get ready for Championship football.

The one thing that will work in our favour again this season is that there are at least three teams worse than us in terms of quality. I dont believe we will go down. The late goals we are conceding lately are frustrating but we will turn the corner at some point.
We really need Zubar, Van Damme and Hunt match fit. We’ve missed Zubar at the back this season, and sadly, Stephen Ward isn’t good enough at this level.
Keep positive and good things will happen.

Hope you recover and carry on with your career son – poor tackle and poor decision – no malice but poorly timed and executed – still a red card.

Let’s all calm down and see what comes after Saturdays game at Wigan.
It’s pretty clear to everyone that with the players we’ve got the best formation is 4-5-1, however, i’d like to see SEB play along side Fletcher with Doyle sitting just behind the front 2. SEB is a goal scorer and Fletcher is a target man and add Doyles work rate to the pot it’s got to work!
Like MM ALOT, but love my team more. If we lose to the Baggies i don’t think i could forgive him.
Show some creative flair the weekend against Wigan, it’s got be twice as boring to play this system as it is to watch.

this is bad news. i really think he should have been starting so i wish him a fast recovery.
i think we shouldnt get too down about the result on sunday. i was at the game and we were terrible in the first half. in the second half we were easily the better side and we only lost due to a brilliantly take goal by heskey.
i think expectations have risen this season and maybe rightly so be we arent playing badly. I really think that we will cause wigan and west ham problems.
does anyone else think we should still be playing 4-5-1? we looked so much better yesterday when we changed the formation and absolutely out ran their midfield. even edwards started to play alot better when he was playing a more central role. I thought he was shocking first half but he isn’t a right winger.
i dont think we have to believe that 4-4-2 is the only way to play attacking football. their arent even that many teams who play 4-4-2 at the top.
with 2 attacking players on the wing, like with fletcher and jarvis on sunday, i think we look a lot better team and much stronger in the midfield. it was only a negative formation last season because we were playing with a right back on the right wing all year.
does anyone else think it might work better with doyle out wide and fletcher through the middle as well? fletcher seems to be a good finisher and obviously has more of an aerial presence than doyle. I think doyle could make things happen more for the team if he was playing wider and facing the goal more.

I’ve been going to Molineux for 32 yrs & a season ticket holder for the last 20 yrs.
Sorry Ive watched the tackle a few times yes it was a booking and yes it was a poor tackle, but he didn’t go in to do him just like Henry didn’t on Zamora.
I’ve been sick to death of all the stick we have had coming our way over the last few weeks & refuse to jump on the bandwagon when it happens the other.

We have got sent off for far less than that.
I agree with No.1 and No.7. We have to beat Wigan on Sat. We have to stop these last minute goals unless it us that is scoring them.
Bob Wolf you are entitled to your opinion and so am I but think on, would we be where we are if it was not for MM no probably be back in the fourth division.

Jack The Hat,
Your sentiments are much appreciated. And although I was stunned at Arsenal’s inability to turn up on Saturday, your lot deserve more credit that the media have given you for the result. I may be Wolves lifelong, but you can’t knock a result like that.
Did Ward go off injured, or did he just have twisted blood? Virtually every threat came down his side of the pitch, and has done in every game so far this season. Chelsea and Arsenal will totally roast him. He was nowhere near Albrighton for the first goal pass, and Foley was just ball-watching. Before we spend another £6m on a striker, we need two Premier-class full-backs. But would they get picked though? Just where are our new signings? You can get away with putting out a committed, hard-working Championship team every week in the Prem for only so long. Jarvis must dream of playing in front of a rock-steady left-back, he’d see more of the ball then. Every time Capello’s at a Wolves game (not that hed pick him anyway), he gets nothing but scraps because Stephen Ward is just hopeless. And for God’s sake – when we’ve got a free kick and the opposition have 6ft 4 monsters as centre-backs, don’t keep swinging it onto their heads!

67. Grace..I normally respect and agree with most things you say and you are perfectly entitled to your opinion and I won’t belittle you for it. Unfortunately though, in this case I cannot agree with you. The tackle happened directly in front of me and although he may have not meant anything malicious – Adlene was not going to get past him. You don’t have to go in with the intention of “doing anybody” to get sent off -it can be a badly timed tackle – nothing more nothing less. Now I’m not saying that Sidwell was deliberately trying to cause injury but he certainly wanted to make sure his man didn’t get past him. It was totally different from the Zamora tackle. Henry got the ball and it was an extremely unfortunate accident the way that he fell. This one was ball and man with the intention of ensuring that Guedioura didn’t get past him. As I’ve already said it was a straight red – nothing more nothing less.
No offence meant.

I also think we should try putting doyle out wide and fletcher up front. I think fletch would score more goals and doyle could be just as influential out wide. I dont think fletch offers much defending wise and leaves us wide open when were defending a counter attack. I feel for SEB though, he must be gutted and deserves more time on the pitch, especially at home.
I am completely gutted about the guedioura injury, i cant see where the creativity is going to come from, jones and edwards for me just simply aren’t good enough. I know miljas is lacking fitness but we need to give him a chance, we cant keep relying on jarvis to do everything. Another winger and a top drawer centre midfielder required in january please MM, thats only if kightly doesnt get fit.
Trying to be positive one result can change everything and if we get one at wigan i am sure we will all be able to relax a little, its to early to start saying games are must wins but i would say we need a minimum 4 points from wigan west ham. Just got to keep the faith and overcome this spell, were more than capable and with van damme, hunt, zubar and hopefully kightly to come back weve got the players to do it.

Another frustrating game to watch and a 170 mile return journey to ponder what might have been. Three time on the trot, yet so close……
I have a rule of thumb at work, once is unique, twice a coincidence and three times a trend.
Poor selection, poor passing, poor defending and poor finishing. Turned up on Sunday and was pleased with Jones and Henry in the middle, a bit bemused why Edwardes started wide left and why MM doesn’t pick AG. He still makes changes as a reaction not as pre-emptive move.
We didn’t tackle on Sunday and our first shot took 35 minutes. I know it is early but I fear for this season. A starting 11 of Hennessey, Zubar, Berra, Craddock, Van Damme, Jones, Henry, Jarvis, Hunt, Doyle and Fletcher should be good enough to stay up. Keeping them all fit and selecting them is another matter. I looked at the subs bench on Sunday and it summed the situation up.
It is going to be a long season. The joy of being a Wolves fan.

MACARTHY GOT TO GO! WARD FOLEY BERRA EDWARDS ELOKOBI All Championship players not good enough technically nor physically for this league.3 defeats on the bounce.Wigan and West Ham must win games now with big four coming up or MM will be sacked by the time the tinstle comes out of the box!!!!

Bad news on AG, the only TRUE midfielder we had. I doubt we will see him again until we are in the Championship next season.30million spent and no further forward, lose at Wigan and we are in the bottom 3, and could be there for a very long time… mind you..West Brom won at Arsenal, and we are a better side than them…isn’t that right happy clappers?

None taken mate.
I too respect your views, I think we just have a different view on this one.
Perhaps I’m just being mindful of all the flack that has been coming our way over the last few weeks & going easy on the lad.

i love the way the ‘experts’on motd etc would pass off a paul scholes tackle as ‘ahh typical scholes, clumsy tackle…’but when most of the other players do it all of a sudden its a blight on the game. i dont think sidwell meant to hurt Adlene but it was a bad tackle, same as several every wkend – i also hope sad sack shearer gets a managers job or sumat so i dont have to look at him on motd any longer!

Villa are NOT a good footballing side. They are one of the dirtiest and most unattractive footballing sides in the Midlands.

ware are all the super/super mick mccarthy or
where they only on day release? the man a joke
i said when he came he may get us up but that
it we will never move forward with him here, does not like any body that want to play football.
maybe if he had started guedioura he would not
have trying so hard to get his chance. we now
have very litte in midfield along with a poor
defence looking to be a very long season.

78. Grace… Nowt wrong with having different views !! It just annoys me how the press and media all had a real go at us for playing so physical – they must have been short of something to turn into ‘Shock Horror’ headlines that day.
Saw the tackle again on Sky last night in slow mo and Sidwells lead leg was way above the ball with his trailing leg coming in from behind at heel level. Just imagine what would have happened if that had been Henry on Young !! So no sympathy from me for Sidwell. I noticed as well that not one Villa player went to Adlene as he was carried off.
Have a good day my friend.

Just to add my best wishes to AG for a quick recovery. Wolves fans i know all say he is a clever playmaker which wolves need…. hope he has a full recovery.

Respect to the kid and very sorry, bad tackle.
You gave us a game 2nd half but ultimately your defence aint coping in this league.
It was suggested earlier you should have got Shorey. Nonesense we should have kept him, he`s class as he`s proving now and will soon be back in the england squad. O`neils stubborness cost us there.

Best wishes to Adlene Guedioura and hope you have a painless & speedy recovery. Jack The Hat, for once I have to agree with a baggie. That would be a useful law to introduce, and while they are under susoension NO PAY EITHER!!

Mick got it wrong on Sunday by bringing on Stearman who not only lost his man but seemed to think he was playing centre back.
He just left his man on the wing for the goal and for some reason headed for the middle, actually doing nothing at all in the end. Rubbish. Mick had already lost Ward at the back so to make another sub at the back is suicide. He should have made a sub further up the field if at all not finish with two subs in defence. Game plan or not Mick? And please leave STEARMAN off the field in future he is not good enough as seen over the last two games especially. Spurs was embarrassing.
Hope you get well soon Adlene, now we are doomed to have Edwards play for the next few games……….. God help us, he looked rubbish against Southend!!!
I wouldnt go as far as some of you idiots calling for Micks head though…….. What are you on!?

Agree with 88….Stearman not good enough…but what about Mancienne, Berra, Fletcher, Milijas,Jones,Ward, Edwards, Halford … I think they sit in the same mould as “not good enough”… and , we all know who to blame for that eh?
Wasted millions, and no further forward..in fact …backwards…
