Mick McCarthy insists Wolves cup glory is on
Saturday 25th September 2010, 10:51AM BST.
Ambitious Wolves manager Mick McCarthy today told his players they can win the Carling Cup.
Tuesday’s extra-time victory over Notts County took Wolves into the last 16 in a week that saw Chelsea, Liverpool, Everton, Manchester City and Tottenham all knocked out the competition.
And, with the draw potentially opening up for the Premier League’s lesser lights, McCarthy believes his side can end Wolves’ 30-year wait for a major trophy.
“Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Everton are all out, so let’s see one of us – someone like Wolves – win it,” he said.
“If we can get Man United to draw Arsenal that would kill one of those teams’ hopes off.” Wolves took their place in today’s fourth-round draw along with three West Midlands rivals after Albion, Villa and Birmingham all progressed.
Wolves were given a major scare by County before progressing thanks to substitutes Kevin Doyle and Steven Fletcher.
But McCarthy has played down his decision to make nine changes from the previous Premier League match.
“It just shows how difficult these games are – Liverpool got knocked out at home to Northampton and Everton got knocked out at Brentford,” said the Molineux boss.
“Quite clearly, these games aren’t as easy as people think.
“I might not have played my preferred Premier League starting line-up, but Richard Stearman, Steven Mouyokolo, George Elokobi, Christophe Berra, Nenad Milijas, Adlene Guedioura, Kevin Foley, Greg Halford, Marcus Bent and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake aren’t kids or teenagers, so I wasn’t disrespecting the Carling Cup.
“We ought to have played better and, although we didn’t treat the opposition with disrespect, maybe we think we’re a bit better than we are.”

What a strange two weeks it has been since our last game. I haven’t looked over my neighbour’s fence with as much interest since Pamela Anderson moved in next door and regularly used her trampoline, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.

There’s nothing like being optimistic. If Wolves are really serious about this competition, then they will have to play their strongest team.

IF We take it seriously, we might have a go. Too many didn’t and slung out second strings (Wolves included) and that is a dead certain way to go out.
